3-Part Spatial Inventory Interpretive Piece

Senses experienced: Basketball bouncing, people shouting, shoes screeching, ping pong game, music playing at comfortable level from above heads, smell of coffee, views out the corner window into Kassab Mall of UDM, few conversations in background, people walking outside.

Interpretive Piece Photocollage

“Make visible how the world touches us.

- Pallasmaa

We see the world. The colors that create the world. We hear the sounds of the Earth. We smell the air of the Earth. We read constantly in order to become one with one another.

Interpretive Piece Through the Looking Glass: Lasered Acrylic

“Make visible how the world touches us.

- Pallasmaa

Layered acrylic sheets that were constructed from the photoshop collage to be shown over a light source to show the layers of perception that we use to gather informaition about the world around us in order to associate a name to these physical objects.

Interpretive Piece Photocollage

“My perception is (therefore) the sum of visual, tactile, and audible givens: I perceive in a total way with my whole being. - Merleau-Ponty

Through using your five sense. you perceive the world through light, shadow, contrast, colors, etc. The vision of blurriness as a newborn experiences the world until the perception is made clearer.

Interpretive Piece Photocollage

“My perception is (therefore) the sum of visual, tactile, and audible givens: I perceive in a total way with my whole being.” - Merleau-Ponty

After receiving your perception of the world through exploration of shadows and figures of nameless objects, the world become blurs of colors, surrounds sounds, multiple smells, and a collage of materials through the physical environment that you’ve gained with your whole being.

Interpretive Piece Through the Looking Glass: Colored Shadows

“Plan the building as a pure mass of shadow then afterwards to put in light as if you were hollowing out the darkness, as if the light were a new mass seeping in. - Zumthor

The organization of this form was constructed from working inside out to reflect light onto the shadows allowing them to embrace color and become a mass. The spiral motion of assembly allowed for each shadow to have its own individuality.

Verbox Through the Looking Glass: Whole Body Perception

“My perception is (therefore) the sum of visual, tactile, and audible givens: I perceive in a total way with my whole being. - Merleau-Ponty

Three interpretive quote photocollages and a spatial inventory collage were combined into one collage in a three-dimensional form. This Verbox project uses three verbs, three adjectives, and three materials that describe those to create a sensorial experience.

Verbs: to bounce/light; to cut; and of reflection Adjectives: luminous; sinister; familiar Materials: broken colored glass; broken mirror pieces; blue/clear marbles

Sensorial Installation Kaleidoscope Installation By: Emma Jeffrey and Korzell Coe

“The increasing use of reflective glass in architecture reinforces the dream-like sense of unreality and alienation. - Pallasmaa

Kaleidoscope was a 360 exterior and interior sensorial installation. The interior dreamlike sensation from white sheer curtains that reflected colors of light from the central glass sculptures. The exterior experience differed by allowing the colored shadows to seep thru layers of curtains and trace paper.

Precedent Study Les Cols Pavilions RCR Arquitectes Girona, Spain 2005

“To find oneself alone, facing the night and the emptiness, finding refuge between the warm walls and where the opaque and the glass reflections mix in a play of light and water, to fill aspects of nature considered forgotten - Archdaily

The Pavilions accomplishes the human engagement of the visual sense by creating intimate spaces surrounded by reflective glass. The human form descends on many paths on the site where the views of the night sky ascend. The effect of light and shadow reflections encompasses the human form.

LIGHT ON THE BLOCK The Apothecary of Memory

Final Project By: Emma Jeffrey and Korzell Coe

“The increasing use of reflective glass in architecture reinforces the dream-like sense of unreality and alienation.” - Pallasmaa

Light on the Block is a mixed-use urban infill building located near the corner of West McNichols and San Juan Drive. The project was heavily inspired by our Kaleidoscope Installation Project. Light on the Block offers a colorful sensorial experience through the Kaleidoscope: Interactive Gallery, cafe, outdoor seating, three residential lofts, and rooftop.
