IN TODAY’S ENVIRONMENT, EDUCATORS ARE COMMITTED TO RAISING GLOBAL CITIZENS WHO WILL RECOGNISE THE POSITIVE IMPACT THEY CAN HAVE ON THE WORLD. IT IS IMPORTANT FOR OUR GIRLS TO BE PREPARED FOR THE ROLE THEY WILL PLAY IN SHAPING THE FUTURE OF AUSTRALIA. Already, our graduates have moved around the world, extending their network far and wide as ambassadors of both Korowa and our nation. Our graduates have shown their strength and capability in countless industries.

Our graduates have become innovators, experts and leaders and it is my pleasure to introduce several of our Korovians to you in the pages of this magazine.

This edition of the Korovian has an ‘international’ theme, acknowledging our diverse and active community. Members of our community come from nearly 30 different countries and our Korovians are spread around the world. It has become more important than ever for our graduates to embrace diversity, to practise tolerance and to feel empowered.

A great deal of work has been taking place to ensure Korowa remains a leading force in girls’ education. We conducted a cultural audit with our community, seeking feedback which has strongly informed the direction of Korowa’s future growth towards 2025.

I am pleased to present the Master Plan for Korowa in the following pages. This Master Plan has as its central purpose, the development of Korowa as a hub for our community and its needs.

As I approach the end of my first year at Korowa, I would like to record my thanks for the opportunity to lead Korowa. I am conscious of my privilege and responsibility as I walk in the footsteps of great leaders who have gone before me. Our founding Principal Henrietta Akehurst seized the opportunity to create an outstanding educational experience for girls, which we continue today.

It has been a privilege to work with such a talented cohort of students and staff and we have a lot to celebrate as we reflect on the year.

OVER THE PAST YEAR, THE SCHOOL HAS BEEN DEVELOPING A MASTER PLAN, WHICH WILL SHAPE THE FUTURE OF KOROWA. THE MASTER PLAN OPENS UP THE CAMPUS, CREATING AN INVITING AND COLLABORATIVE OUTDOOR SPACE AND HUB FOR THE CAMPUS.

Korowa will commit each year to innovative learning and capital works projects in line with this plan and our strategic vision.

Next year we will resource new programs in STEAM ensuring that Korowa remains at the forefront of specialised girls’ education.

This Master Plan is not about buildings. It is designed around our community and their use of the spaces to learn, excel and feel connected at Korowa. At the heart of this plan sits our strategic goal to develop confident, capable and self-aware young women who understand their responsibility and capacity to influence the world in a positive way. Let’s celebrate as we embark on exciting times of growth and optimism in the next chapter of Korowa’s proud history.

This extensive plan will be rolled out in stages, delivering our vision for the future in a sustainable and purposeful way.

Thanks to the generous support of The Cripps Foundation, we have received a donation of $17.75 million to build a new Performing Arts Centre in Phase 1 of our building program.

The Centre will include seating for over 800, an underground car park and will support all forms of theatrical and musical performance with state of the art technology.

THE WRITE STUFF

Rebecca Matthews (Year 12) was awarded the Pierre De Coubertin Award this year, one of the most prestigious forms of recognition for senior school sportsmen and women.

Korowa’s new writers’ club released its first magazine this year, called Wednesday Whispers. Traversing hope, love, loss and the future, the 28-page magazine features stories and poems written by students. One of the magazine’s most distinctive features is the accompanying collages on each page, which reflect the creativity of the young writers. The group continues to meet each Wednesday and has released their second magazine this year. Copies of the magazine are available to read on korowa.vic.edu.au

Congratulations to Rebecca, who has proudly represented Korowa in a number of sports and demonstrated time and again good sportsmanship on and off the field.

MINI MOGULS IN THE MAKING The rainy skies did not keep the crowds away from Korowa’s first ever Year 5 Kidpreneur Market Day - and what a success it was!

Most groups sold out during the market, with many Korowa families coming to support. The overall net profit was just over $2,600, which was donated to Guide Dogs Victoria. The Year 5 girls loved making their own businesses, but now know how much work goes on behind the scenes.

PITCH PERFECT The Annual Concert is always a moving evening and this year was no different, with stunning performances from many of the School’s musical groups. Traditional songs were intertwined with more modern pieces from groups including the Korovian Choir, Koristers, Stage Band and Wind Symphony. The Annual Concert is always a rewarding experience for our students and an opportunity for the girls to perform in front of a large audience.

SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS There were many congratulations shared with Grace Richardson (Year 9) when she was to be awarded a ‘Swannie Award’ as the best public speaker in the Hawthorn D Grade region.

At the presentation ceremony, after she received her Swannie for the Hawthorn region, she was then presented with a gold plaque for being the best D grade speaker in the entire competition. Out of the 10,000 students who debated across all 19 regions, only five students received this award.

Big Day In this year featured a jungle theme and raised funds for our school in Bangladesh which is run by the CO-ID organisation.

IN SVALBARD! WHEN EMMA BLAND (‘07) BECAME A ‘TREKKER’ IN YEAR 9 AT KOROWA ANGLICAN GIRLS’ SCHOOL, SHE NEVER EXPECTED IT TO BECOME ONE OF HER FAVOURITE MEMORIES OF HER TIME AT SCHOOL.

‘I WAS A ‘TREKKER’ BACK IN 2004, AND IT IS STILL ONE OF THE BEST THINGS I HAVE EVER DONE.’ EVERY YEAR, YEAR 9 GIRLS MAKE THE TREK FROM MANSFIELD AT THE BASE OF THE VICTORIAN ALPS TO NINETY-MILE BEACH BY FOOT, BIKE AND RAFT. THE MONTH-LONG WILDERNESS ADVENTURE HAS BECOME A MUCHANTICIPATED TRADITION, WHICH CHALLENGES GIRLS TO LIVE AND WORK TOGETHER IN A SMALL COMMUNITY FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME.

THE LAST FRONTIER. Now a scientific researcher at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), Emma lives and works in a small community on one of the world’s northernmost inhabited areas. In summer, temperatures range from 5-10°C and they enjoy 24 hour daylight. In winter, the temperatures can plummet to -10°C or even -20°C. ‘Svalbard is the archipelago about 1000km north of the Norwegian mainland, way up in the high Arctic,’ Emma explains. ‘The town of Longyearbyen – where I live – is completely surrounded by mountains and overlooks a small fjord. There are no trees here, so it’s difficult to tell whether it’s windy until you step outside!’

Emma adds that, ‘on Svalbard we talk a lot about ‘type 2 fun’ – activities which are awful in the moment, but legendary in hindsight!

Trek is full of these ‘type 2’ experiences, with many physical and social challenges during the adventure. Of course there were plenty of ‘type 1’, in-the-moment fun experiences as well, but it was the more challenging parts which I think made Trek so memorable and worthwhile.’

Everybody who lives in Longyearbyen shares her great love of the outdoors and while adjusting to the extreme temperatures can be difficult, she has the opportunity to spend her weekends hiking in the mountains or photographing the local wildlife.

While the local wildlife includes polar bears, she and other residents try to avoid them.

‘One considerable danger on Svalbard is the presence of polar bears. Although polar bears generally hunt for seals out on the sea ice, they are known to approach humans out of curiosity, or when they are desperate for food. We place a lot of emphasis on avoiding Image caption confrontations with polar bears; ideally we want to leave them be.’

Emma will spend the next three years living on Svalbard, studying ‘space science’ and the effects high-energy particles from space have on the Earth’s atmosphere. The high-energy particles may cause changes to the composition and temperature of the atmosphere in the polar regions, including depletion of the ozone layer or cause damage to spacecraft and electrical grids. But they are also the reason for the spectacular aurora displays such as the Northern Lights.

After graduating from Korowa Anglican Girls’ School, Emma studied at the University of Melbourne where she was awarded a Bachelor of Science and a Diploma in Mathematical Sciences. She then completed a PhD in space physics at La Trobe University, which focused on observing plasma waves in the Earth’s magnetic field using high frequency radar.

‘My undergraduate physics course had a female enrolment of about 20%, and during my PhD I was the only woman in my research group,’ Emma says. ‘I’m not intimidated by the gender imbalance in my field, but it is important to be assertive so that people don’t underestimate your abilities.’

75% of the fastest-growing careers require STEM skills, but women are underrepresented in STEM industries, especially at the higher management levels.

With schools aiming to address the gender imbalance in STEM careers, Emma is truly a science role model to look up to.

‘The best thing you can have in science is a good mentor, so go out and find one!’ she advises. ‘Avoid taking advice from people who say you must work 80-hour weeks to have any chance of success in STEM – they are trying to intimidate you, and they are almost certainly exaggerating.’

And with perks like living in one of the most beautiful places in the world, why wouldn’t you want a career in science?

MRS DIANNE TAMBURRO, KOROWA ANGLICAN GIRLS’ SCHOOL’S HEAD OF LANGUAGES, HAS BEEN TO GERMANY MORE THAN 30 TIMES, BUT AUSTRALIA IS STILL HER HOME. WHILE SHE LOVES THE HISTORY, FOOD, TRADITIONS AND A WHITE GERMAN CHRISTMAS, THE GREATER ATTRACTION FOR DIANNE IS THE LANGUAGE. ‘KNOWING A LANGUAGE UNLOCKS COUNTLESS SOCIAL AND BUSINESS INTERACTIONS, WHICH WOULD BE OTHERWISE LOST,’ SAYS DIANNE.

Korowa’s first German exchange to the Veit-Höser-Gymnasium in Bavaria was held in 1999 and we now offer exchanges to France, China and Japan as well as welcoming the host sisters back to Korowa.

Having an intimate knowledge of a language means that girls can also better understand the subtle nuances of a culture. ‘Learning a language breaks down clichés and stereotypes, and promotes understanding,’ Dianne explains. ‘By understanding the language, a greater depth of cultural appreciation and sensitivity can be achieved since many cultural concepts are closely tied with the language.’

Dianne first came to Korowa to set up the Junior School languages program, then moved between the Junior and Senior Schools as a German Teacher and Head of Languages. At Korowa, and then at University, she majored in French and German. Dianne also studied Italian as a mature age student and dismisses the idea that it is too difficult for adults to learn a language. She encourages everyone to learn multiple languages.

Dianne first fell in love with languages as a Korowa student in the 1970s. ‘I loved learning languages at Korowa. It had a very strong languages program even in the 70s and the teachers were great role models. I had Mrs Suzanne Painter, who was a wonderful German teacher and an inspiration to me.’

‘More and more Australians are travelling and conducting business overseas, which makes learning a language even more important,’ she adds.

‘Winning a scholarship in Year 11 to study in Germany was a turning point for me. I fell in love with Germany and its way of life, and it greatly enhanced my fluency. It was a big trip for me, I’d never been overseas before, I was living with a host family and I was away from home for five months. In those days, you couldn’t email, skype or text your parents and friends; you were there on your own’.

On Christmas Day in 1973, she eagerly awaited a phone call from her parents. ‘We hadn’t had been in contact for several weeks.

It was a big thing, and we only spoke for a minute or so because it cost so much money.

You were really on your own, but it made me more resilient and a bit tougher because there wasn’t that instant communication and support from home. And whilst I had always loved languages, it was on this exchange that I realised I wanted to teach languages.’

Dianne says that these days ‘technology has radically opened up language learning possibilities. Communication is so much easier now with numerous new channels for interacting.’

Girls are able to listen to the German news online, catch up with their exchange host sisters over Skype and remain globally connected through the internet whenever they choose to do so.

After leading so many exchanges to Germany, Dianne still enjoys the opportunity to return.

She loves the rich history behind every city in Germany, the beautiful scenery and stately castles in Bavaria and the romance of the wine regions. In the four weeks leading up to Christmas, every town has its own Christmas market too. And whilst Dianne is also a frequent traveller to Italy, Germany remains close to her heart.

I

Of the sixteen exchange trips Dianne has led to Germany, mistakes made in translation are often the funniest (even if embarrassing at the time!) and can become fantastic ice breakers with new host families.

It seems Dianne’s love of languages is infectious; happily, both of her children are fluent in foreign languages, and she has countless stories of past students who have gone on her exchanges and fallen in love with Germany.

Some examples include Hannah Matthews (‘13), who is studying engineering in Frankfurt, and whose sisters, Lucy (‘14) and Bec (‘16), also participated in the Exchange program; the three Read sisters, Georgia (‘08), Jess (‘11) and Lucy (‘13), whose parents recently reunited with their three host families; and actress Bella Heathcote (‘05), who will soon appear in a TV series in a German-speaking role.

Languages have become an important bridge for Dianne, forming many close friendships over time. In May this year, she attended a friend’s 90th birthday celebration in Germany (someone whom she first met in 1984) and visits many friends every year or two. She still writes to her French pen friend, who lives in a small village near Toulouse, after first corresponding with each other at the age of 14.

Dianne concludes by saying that her early love of Germany has been enriched and deepened by the many wonderful experiences teaching German and accompanying some 340 Korowa students over 16 years of exchanges. The Korowa girls in Germany have provided many fun and unforgettable memories as they journeyed through snow, new friendships, cultural challenges and the surprising delights of a beautiful foreign country. ‘In my mind’, says Dianne, ‘Germany and Korowa have become intertwined and I am very grateful for this’.

Dianne will lead her 17th exchange to Germany in late November this year.

ANNIE STERCK. ANNIE STERCK, ONE OF OUR LONGEST-SERVING MEMBERS OF STAFF AT KOROWA, WILL RETIRE AT THE END OF THE YEAR AFTER MORE THAN 30 YEARS AT KOROWA. Annie’s office opens up onto the second floor of the Cripps Centre, right in the heart of the building, and for many students Annie and the Cripps Centre are intrinsically linked. She has been the Director or Head of Middle School since the Cripps Centre opened in 2002, and a member of the School’s Executive team since 2004. She has been a Drama Teacher at Korowa since 1984.

Annie’s legacy is a rich and diverse one.

She has shaped the Middle School with significant initiatives including the Sense Cycles, Learning for Leadership and iFutures programs. She has also been a driving force behind Middle School fundraising initiatives such as the Big Day In. From early in her career at Korowa, when she oversaw the Years 10 to 12 Drama Society, Annie has been an inspiring leader. She has made important contributions to many of Korowa’s major events, including the introduction of the House Arts Competition, and the annual production.

She has produced, directed, stage managed and brought to life more than 21 different productions at the School and in the past two years has been greeting audiences from the front of house.

Her commitment to the importance of Drama has inspired many students, including performer Marney McQueen (’96), who was MC at our 125 Years Celebration Concert. As Head of Drama she introduced Drama as an Elective in Year 9, taking the subject through to Year 12 in the first Year of the VCE and later introduced and also taught Theatre Studies successfully at that level.

As she mentioned in her 1986 Palm Leaf interview (see box), she tries to create a classroom where students feel free to express themselves. One of the biggest things Annie has learned from teaching is that ‘no two students are ever alike in terms of their

learning and who they are. This should inform the approach we take with each of them every day.’

‘Clearly the thing that I will miss the most is the girls and watching them mature and develop into confident, articulate women who go out into the world to make a difference,’ Annie said.

As Annie heads off in a new direction, Korowa is a richer place for having her knowledge, kindness and influence for more than three decades. She will be sorely missed and we wish her all the best.

JANE LANG. OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS, MRS JANE LANG HAS BEEN EVERYTHING FROM A WIZARD TO A PRINCESS, WINNIE THE POOH AND A COLLINGWOOD FOOTBALL PLAYER – ANYTHING TO PUT A SMILE ON THE FACES OF OUR YOUNG STUDENTS. Jane has worked in education for just over 40 years as a Teacher, Librarian and for the last three, as Head of Junior School at Korowa.

Jane made the decision this year to continue to grow her diverse portfolio and seek out new adventures. We use this opportunity to reflect on Jane’s journey, inspiring young people through education.

Jane remembers her first day as a teacher very well. “I was terrified and felt mightily unprepared. I was sent to teach at a primary school in Seaford and was given a Year 5/6 composite class with 32 children in a portable classroom.

‘While I knew what it was I was supposed to teach, I had very little idea about classroom management strategies. I laugh now when I look back at that young woman and how she stumbled along.’

‘My children were beautiful and so supportive of their brand new teacher. I learned very quickly that children want authenticity in their teachers and love when their teacher shows a genuine interest in them and their learning.’

Literature has always been one of Jane’s passions and she was inspired to pursue a career as a Librarian after one of her mentors showed her the impact she could have if she taught right across the school in a subject area she Ioved.

‘I was hooked after that and, while I have taught in classrooms since, my most treasured teaching moments have been in school libraries.’

However, Jane is no old-school ‘book worm’. While she thinks there will always be a place for the special tactile experience of reading hard copy books, she is passionate about using technology to augment the students’ learning experience. Jane has been instrumental in the introduction of STEAM in the Junior School which includes Robotics, Coding and 3D Printing. This initiative has been met with fever-pitch from the girls - you really have to see it to believe how enthusiastic and excited they are about their STEAM lessons.

After Jane hangs up her costumes at the end of the school day, she likes being outdoors, training and travelling, or riding her motorbike with her husband by her side.

She leaves us with one of her favourite memories of her life in disguise: ‘I was introduced to my classes as a guest storyteller and ran several sessions with them dressed as Mother Bear. None of my students knew that it was me. When I decided to reveal my true identity at the end of the program, I took off my ‘head’ and said ‘ta-da’. A number of my students screamed and ran from the room – I was not too sure what to make of that,’ she laughs.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Jane for her tireless work in progressing the Junior School during her time, and for the joy she has brought to our students and staff with her wit, laughter and warmth.

TREASURED TEACHING MOMENTS

HAVE BEEN IN SCHOOL LIBRARIES”

CHRIS ELLISON. MR CHRIS ELLISON JOINED KOROWA ANGLICAN GIRLS’ SCHOOL IN TERM 2 THIS YEAR AFTER MORE THAN 25 YEARS TEACHING MAINLY IN BOYS’ EDUCATION. WHILE THE GIRLS ARE A BIT QUIETER AND HAVE MUCH NEATER HANDWRITING, CHRIS SAYS THAT TEACHING GIRLS REALLY ISN’T THAT DIFFERENT TO TEACHING BOYS. ‘Boys and girls are very discerning,’ he says, ‘they can tell when you are not really passionate about your job. But equally when they see that you are genuinely enthusiastic about your subject, that’s when they’ll engage with you. That’s when it becomes really rewarding.’

He adds that students often ‘learn teachers’ before they learn their subjects and that he partly modelled his own teaching style on his Year 10 English Teacher.

Chris loves teaching English and the fact that it has direct and indirect connections with so many other subjects. ‘Clear and effective communication is incredibly important, not just in the written form but the spoken word too. Kids are quite tough on themselves and often don’t know how to critique their work without saying “I don’t know whether it’s good or not.” Once you teach them some of the skills and vocabulary to critique their work and assess whether it is a genuinely good piece of writing, then you see “that light go on”. You see them start to become more confident in their own ability and then the sky’s the limit.

And not just in English, a whole range of other subject areas too.’

In 2012, Chris took a year off from teaching and lived in Palermo, Sicily. A keen equestrian, he spent some time instructing dressage, but he mainly spent time living like a local and exploring the city. Chris recalls fondly the laidback chaos of this ancient Italian city and its incredible architecture. Growing up in a large and close-knit Italian community in Myrtleford, in Victoria’s High Country, Sicily seemed like the logical place to take time off.

The year off really strengthened Chris’ passion for teaching, giving him time to recharge. ‘I feel very lucky that at this stage in my career, I’m loving teaching just as much, if not more than when I first started.’

‘I have learned a lot in teaching,’ he says.

‘Teaching’s up there with one of the best professions in the world. I think there is still a genuine nobility about it. You’re constantly learning as a teacher. Sometimes when you’ve taught a text several years in a row, you’ll be surprised by a student who puts their hand up and has another take on the text. It makes me pause and kids love it when they can learn with you, or when they can teach a teacher something. They love the two-way process.’

When he has time, Chris loves to read and enjoys all of the classics on his Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 reading lists. ‘I really love Shakespeare; Camus and Steinbeck are favourites too. I love that they still study many of the classics here. It’s wonderful to speak with parents who have studied the same texts when they were at school and this often provides an opportunity for discussions about texts between parents and their kids at home as well.’

Chris adds that ‘schools have to be discerning about what they pick for their reading lists.

One of the things I’ve loved about teaching here is that Korowa girls aren’t too precious; they’re quite robust even a bit ‘edgy’ and we’ve been able to select books that are quite gutsy in content. Next year in VCE we will revisit the likes of Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible and Geraldine Brooks’ novel Year of Wonders.

After all those years teaching at boys’ schools, such as CBC St Kilda, St Kevin’s College and Melbourne Grammar School, he says he was initially ‘a little daunted about teaching all girls... but in all truth, I’ve absolutely loved it.’

KOROVIANS ON THE WORLD STAGE. ONCE EVERY FOUR YEARS THE WORLD COMES TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE THE FITTEST, THE FASTEST AND THE BEST AT THE OLYMPICS GAMES. THIS YEAR, KOROWA FAMILIES WERE WATCHING OUR ALUMNI, ROWIE WEBSTER (‘05) AND KOTI NGAWATI (‘11), BATTLE IT OUT IN THE SWIMMING POOL AT THE RIO OLYMPIC GAMES. After taking home bronze at the London Olympics in 2012, this year Rowie took on the world again at the Rio Olympic Games, this time as the Vice Captain of Australia’s Stingers women’s water polo team. She is known as one of Australia’s strongest defenders in the pool and certainly showed her skill at the Games, with early convincing wins. The Stingers were defeated in a tough penalty shoot out against Hungary, but still earned a respectable sixth place in the world.

Elsewhere in the pool, young swimmer Koti Ngawati was making her Olympic debut in the 200m individual medley. To swim in the Olympic Games has been a longtime dream for Koti. After training five hours a day, nine times a week, she narrowly missed out on selection for the 2012 Olympic team by 0.2 of a second. Four years later, she was in the pool again for the when she cut her foot on a broken pool tile for the 2016 qualifiers. Not to be set back, she eventually swam a personal best time, securing her place in the Australian Olympic team.

Against tough competition from the world’s best, Koti swam 2:13.05 to place sixth in her heat. While she didn’t progress further into the Games, she can be proud to have achieved her childhood dream.

Following her own determined path, up-and-coming Year 10 star swimmer Molly Batchelor has been tearing up the pool all season. Molly was selected for the Commonwealth Games junior squad this year.

She recently returned from the Junior Pan Pacific Games in Hawaii, where she was one of the youngest swimmers.

Out of the pool, our Korovians have been shooting for the skies – literally. Anna Shedrina (‘99) recently won the 2016 Ladies World Championship title in the sport of clay target shooting, with a perfect 25/25 final round and a personal best overall score. Anna has competed around the world, has qualified for the Universal Trench Australia team and won her first National Title just nine months after first seriously focusing on the sport in 2007.

We are also pleased to welcome brothersister duo Jennifer and Tim Cleary onto our rowing team as coaches. Jennifer also made her Olympic debut at Rio this year, in the Quadruple Sculls.

Korowa offers a range of sports for girls to try, including swimming, water polo and rowing.

INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL SERVICE. LOCATED 70 MILES INLAND FROM THE COASTAL TOWN OF BAUCAU AND SET HIGH ON THE SLOPES OF THE SECOND HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN TIMOR, BAGUIA IS A SUBDISTRICT COMPRISING SOME TEN VILLAGES WITH EXTENDED FARMING COMMUNITIES. IT HAS ONE STREET – WHICH IS THE ONLY ROAD LINKING THE NORTH AND SOUTH COASTS OF THE REGION. MOST PEOPLE LIVE IN BAMBOO HOUSES AND EXIST IN EXTREME POVERTY.

This year, the letters were hand-delivered by the parents of Meagan Lowe (Social Service Captain 2008), on their recent visit to Timor Leste. Meagan has herself made three trips to Baguia since leaving school. She first made the challenging trip to meet her pen pal, accompanied by her mother, in her first year of university. Traversing the tough terrain in the back of a goods truck (the only daily transport in and out of the mountains), mother and daughter arrived in style to a warm celebratory welcome from the villagers and students at St Joseph’s.

Since 2004, the exceptional partnership between Korowa and Leopoldina Guterres, the Principal of St Joseph’s, has deepened.

Leo has visited Melbourne twice thanks to the sponsorship of Friends of Baguia in Melbourne, and was able to visit classes at Korowa. Two of East Timor’s top high school achievers, Lely and Elsa, were sponsored to visit Melbourne and connect with their pen pals (Eleanor Crute and Lynette Dong) in 2012.

Since 2005 Korowa has funded scholarships for girls in Baguia to attend school annually.

Bella Drimer (Social Service Captain 2016 ) continued this tradition, raising the money for the 35 Baguia Scholarships ($3,500) amongst staff and students, small groups and families across the Korowa community.

Over the past twelve years, Korowa students have given the gift of English text and pastoral motivation to the Timorese students.

In response, the Baguia students have excelled at English, achieving the highest scores in Timor’s national testing. This has facilitated much educational advantage and opportunity. It is particularly outstanding that Lely is currently undertaking a Medical Degree in Manila and Elsa has just finished a Primary Teaching Degree in Dili. Investing in girls’ education in Baguia is a very powerful mechanism to facilitate higher living standards, empowering young women to overcome poverty and gender inequity, in fulfilling their potential.

Every year, Korowa students exchange hundreds of letters with their Timorese pen pals. The first package of Korowa Christmas letters and cards was couriered to Timor via diplomatic channels in the mail bag of the Consul General H.E. Abel Guterres in 2004, as part of a pen pal program established by Mrs Marianne Hale, Head of RE and Social Service.

When I first came to Australia in 2012, I could not speak English at all. It was hard for me for the first few years because of the different culture and people around me. I also missed my parents and friends from Moscow. But I think I have adapted very well since then. And I made many new friends too.

I first came up with the idea of going aboard when I was in the third year of middle school in China. The education system in China made me feel so stressful and tired. My mum recognised that and she agreed that I could go abroad to find a better study environment.

My uncle, aunt and cousins had been living in Melbourne for many years. I often visited them on school holidays. I always wondered what it was like to study in an Australian school and asked my parents to send me to study here.

My favourite thing about living in Australia is being given the wonderful chance to live and study here and to speak more than one language. I can meet people from different countries and get to know them well. I like Melbourne’s beaches, parks, the great education system, the supportive teachers, the best universities in the world and the many opportunities available for my future career.

I love Australian people, I find them friendly and welcoming all the time. People here are more likely to smile to the strangers in the parks or shops. And I also smile at them back.

After the high school entrance examination, I came to Melbourne in 2014 and spent three months studying in a language school. Then I joined Korowa in February the following year as a Year 10 student (Eva is currently in Year 11).

The scenery in Australia is always beautiful and the air is fresh and clean compared to that in China. The brunch and beaches in Australia are awesome too!

I like Melbourne and enjoy this city very much.

Of course, it was a bit challenging when I first came here. I had to do everything by myself and I couldn’t meet with my parents very often, but I received a lot of help from different people and got used to living in this city gradually.

Australian people are very friendly and helpful.

Even if you’re walking on the street, people will smile to you and if you need any help they are always willing to help you.

THE LONG HAUL. AT THE END OF THIS YEAR, ONE OF KOROWA’S MOST-LOVED TEACHERS, MRS SHIRLEY WEINER, WILL RETIRE AFTER 40 YEARS OF TEACHING. WE WISH HER ALL THE VERY BEST. Some teachers make such an impact on your life that you remember them forever.

For Shirley Weiner, a teacher of more than 40 years, there are a special few. She recalls fondly her Year 11 Economics Teacher, Alan Gregory, who opened her eyes to the possibilities of learning and the world at large.

‘He was an amazing teacher, the best I had at school,’ Shirley says. Alan was knowledgeable, engaging, full of enlightening stories on a wide range of topics and he had the capacity to make even the most uninteresting, dull economics definitions somewhat fascinating.

Inspired to follow a teaching career, Shirley’s two teaching methods were Economics and Mathematics. One of the schools that Shirley trained at was Methodist Ladies’ College, and it was here that she realised that her true passion was teaching Mathematics. ‘An important goal in teaching is to develop in students a thirst for learning whilst ensuring skills and processes are clearly conveyed and that students fully comprehend the content.’

In the early days of her career Shirley taught Maths at a boys’ technical school. This was followed by a position to teach Statistics at RMIT while she raised her family. In 1982, she returned to full-time work for one term as a replacement teacher at Mentone Girls’ Grammar, but remained there for more than 20 years.

Shirley joined Korowa as a Mathematics Teacher 13 years ago. She has also loved the responsibility of being the Wilkinson House Coordinator and says that pastoral care is one of the most important aspects of her teaching role. Shirley stated, ‘I was always confident that the teaching profession was right for me and I wanted to work with young people!’

KOROVIAN

She looks forward to her retirement with a mixture of trepidation and excitement. ‘It’s important for me to be busy and I will still get up at the crack of dawn,’ she said. Retirement will give Shirley the opportunity to walk and swim more regularly, and provide time to give back to the community through voluntary work particularly at the Holocaust Centre alongside a former Korowa colleague who was Head of History, Lisa Phillips.

Shirley’s three daughters are spread over three continents, hence retirement will permit greater flexibility to visit the seven of her nine grandchildren who live overseas. Over the last ten years, she and her husband have managed to make regular visits but ‘Once a year is simply not enough to see them all. I would love to develop closer connections and share more readily in their lives,’ she says. ‘I want my grandchildren to know me better.’

Shirley grew up in Melbourne’s Bayside, in the quiet suburb of Elwood. She was the only girl in her family of four siblings and says that growing up with brothers made her more understanding, tolerant and resilient!

‘My brothers were very naughty, so I don’t object to kids who test the boundaries. I just want them to be up front. I try to encourage young people to take responsibility for their actions and move forward.’

Shirley will miss the staff at Korowa, many of whom she has worked with over several years. Her enduring friendship with some past students and former colleagues has been an enriching legacy of her career.

And if there’s one thing Shirley wants her students to remember about her, it is that she throws her energy into everything she does and hopes they will do the same to guarantee their own success.

A PLACE IN THE WORLD.

KOROVIAN

KOROVIAN LOUISA BUJOR (2015 SCHOOL CAPTAIN) IS FASCINATED WITH MYTHOLOGY AND FAIRYTALES. SHE IS INTERESTED IN THE MYTHS THAT HUMANS BELIEVE AND THE MORALS THAT FAIRYTALES INSTIL. AS LOUISA EXPLAINS, WE SEE FAIRYTALES AS A DEVICE TO BUILD CHARACTER IN YOUR CHILDREN, BUT UNTIL A FEW HUNDRED YEARS AGO THEY WERE WRITTEN FOR ADULTS AS WELL. The Grimm Brothers – whose fairytales inspired Disney movies including Snow White, Cinderella and The Little Mermaid – wrote versions of many different fairytales, which were designed to have strong moral endings.

Villains met gruesome ends, but so did some of the heroes who displayed selfishness or ignorance. The violent endings have been diluted over time, but the essential morals remain the same: don’t trust strangers, family is important and you get what you deserve.

In Year 11, she was given a dense book about the stereotypes in fairytales which she read over the summer holidays. It inspired her exploration in Year 12 Art of the gender narratives in fairytales and her series of charcoal drawings which feature female heroes instead of the traditional prince in shining armour.

The large-scale drawings were selected as an example of the best work from around the state and exhibited at the National Gallery of Victoria in the StArt Up: Top Arts showcase earlier this year. When she found out she was going to be part of the exhibition, she couldn’t believe it and is still very modest about her achievements.

Voted School Captain in her final year at School, Louisa took to the role with nervousness and anticipation. She has been a part of the Korowa community since Junior School and has seen many fine School Captains before her.

KOROVIAN PROFILE

I

AND THEY ALL LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER. As a School Captain, Louisa noticed how younger students would look up to her.

She realised how much praise mattered in encouraging other people and developed a strong sense of responsibility. She still has a sense that you have to do what’s right and feels everyday that she is constantly learning.

After graduating from Korowa, Louisa was accepted into art school at Monash University.

In an effort to stretch herself, Louisa has tried to avoid going back to mythology as a theme, but finds herself continually pulled in by it and what humans will believe. She will sometimes find herself reading up about Celtic folklore only to suddenly think ‘so this is my “thing” then’.

Art school has been very different to what Louisa expected, but she has enjoyed being introduced to the art world. She has met some very passionate mentors and tutors, including contemporary artist Kathy Temin. Each assignment is different and heavily conceptual and Louisa has had to try different mediums, which have tested her abilities.

Louisa’s favourite class is one where the students get to sit and draw cadavers in the medical wing of the university. While she never seriously considered a career in science, she believes science is in her blood.

Her parents work in the medical field and her sister is a physiotherapist. Louisa’s mum was the one always taking her to art galleries.

When we discuss the necessity of art, Louisa comes alive, certain that it has a place in the world. People need and crave the experiences that art can bring, and the feeling that it opens your eyes to the true nature of the world.

As we place the cups in the dishwasher and leave the empty staff room, Louisa reflects that people want the satisfaction that comes with endings. Fairytales have definite endings, and the whole idea of fate in fairytales fascinates her.

She’s not sure where life will take her, but it seems Louisa is learning as much from her life experiences as she is from fairytales. We wish her a very happy ever after!

There is something dizzyingly beautiful about those last few seconds right before you fly. With the ground trembling beneath me and the plane poised like a bird, ready to soar at any moment into the open sky, I feel an odd sense of calm wash over my body.

This is where I’m meant to be.

I have practically sat in the same seat, next to the same window, far too many times in life. Having grown up with parents who move countries more often than a Feng Shui master moves their furniture, this bittersweet taste of change, of departure, and of arrival has become more familiar to me than consistency.

The plane rumbles to life now, its wheels spinning slowly at first, then picking up speed.

I press my temple to the smooth panes of glass, watching the burgeoning greenery rush by. I wonder how many families remain behind at the airport, goodbyes lodged in the back of their throats like hard candy. I imagine their hands raised in farewell as they scan this endless horizon, all hoping to catch a final glimpse of this plane before it whisks their loved ones away.

Sound presses against sound. In one sudden, unexpected burst of movement, we are thrust into the air. The plane cabin is filled with noise as children gurgle and gasp in delight. Perhaps this is their first time travelling, I muse. I can recall that same flutter of excitement in my stomach as a child, so eagerly awaiting the spectacular change in scenery to unfold outside the window.

We ascend until we float just below the clouds. Like swimming through a silvery sea, I watch in fascination the pale wisps of smoke and nacreous light which graze against these tilted wings.

Down below, the landscape morphs to form valleys of mountains, encircled by rivers which dip and curve and bend like ribbons around their snowy peaks, everything a magnificent blur of blue and grey and green.

I notice houses upon houses resting along hillsides, and I cannot help but wonder about the people living down below. Would their lives bear any semblance to our own? How often would they travel as we do, leaving behind the comfort of home to walk straight into the great unknown?

That is what I love about plane rides, I realize. It is not merely the strange and magical opportunity to be granted wings, to soar past places where the moon goes to sleep, to touch the invisible sheets wrapped around our pale blue planet… No, it is the idea of being connected to all these strangers by a single destination. It is the thought that every individual- each coming from different backgrounds, cultures and countries far and wide- were brought together by the same journey at some point in their lives.

A few hours later, my little sister stirs and wakes from her sleep. “Where are we now?” she asks groggily, a thin blanket stretched out around her tummy.

“Somewhere above the ocean.”

“Oh.” She thinks about this for a moment, then says, “Will we be reaching Australia soon?”

“Soon,” I promise. “Very soon.”

I know my Australian-born sister easily refers to Melbourne as home, but I have always struggled to decide which country I truly come from. Perhaps the answer is as simple as this- I belong in the present, suspended above this vast body of water which bridges my Australian and Chinese identity. I can exist at last in two places at once, without any need to worry about the contrast between my upbringing and my ethnicity, my values and my beliefs.

The flight ends too quickly. As we gather our luggage and stuff crumpled plane tickets into back pockets, an elderly woman smiles at my sister and asks where we’re going.

“Travelling,” I answer for her, the same time another voice in my head replies, “We’re going home.”

The School Council focused on rebuilding a strong community commitment to Korowa, re-engaging with all of our stakeholders and improving rates of student retention.

We also welcomed Mark Burgess as the Foundation representative on School Council and Julian Smith. I recognise the work of all members of School Council who give generously of their time to provide strategic oversight of Korowa. These are exciting times of growth and optimism as we focus on a new future for Korowa.

FOUNDATION NEWS. THIS YEAR HAS BEEN A VERY EXCITING YEAR TO BE CHAIR OF THE KOROWA FOUNDATION. I have had the pleasure of getting to know and working with our new Principal, Helen Carmody, and fostering a closer collaboration with the Korowa Council under the leadership of the new Chair, John Harker.

As a Board, the Korowa Foundation comes together multiple times per year to discuss and plan the various ways we can leverage our community to support and resource the School. We aim to encourage a strong and ongoing spirit of philanthropy across the whole community.

This year, we honour the contributions of retiring Foundation Director, Margaret Brumby, whose ongoing involvement in the School has been of great value. We are thrilled that Margaret will be continuing on as President of the Jessie Patrick Bequest Society. Year 7 parent, Kent Sutherland, will be stepping up to fill the role of Director and we warmly welcome Kent to this position. His experience and enthusiasm will be a great asset to our team.

IT IS HEART-WARMING TO READ THE STORIES OF KOROVIANS SUCCEEDING OVERSEAS, SUPPORTED BY THE VALUES THEY LEARNED IN SCHOOL, AND CONNECTION THEY MAINTAIN WITH THEIR SCHOOL FRIENDS, WHO HAVE BECOME FRIENDS FOR LIFE. IT IS THIS CONNECTION THAT WE, THE KOROVIAN CLUB, WISH TO EXPLORE IN 2017, OUR 100TH ANNIVERSARY. During this very special year, The Korovian Club will provide many opportunities for our vast array of Korovians to engage with each other. This theme of ‘engagement’ was one we explored in October, when The Korovian Club hosted the Combined Old Girls’ Association (COGA) Annual General Meeting. A variety of like schools, who had much in common with our own, identified the importance of providing a forum to foster those existing relationships amongst their alumni as well as ‘friendraise’ and network.

While reunions are a wonderful place to catch up with old friends, once every five years often feels too long.

Throughout the course of 2017, The Korovian Club wishes to invite all Korovians to three flagship events. Our first will be a homage to the past, with a classic addition to our Twilight Fair. With a special emphasis on the inclusion of Korovians and old-fashioned (but still very much in style) games for all ages, this promises to be a fun, family event. In September, the Club will host a Centenary Dinner at Kooyong Tennis Club, a night where we will celebrate the past, look forward to the future, and possibly even dance the night away. The year will round out with a special Trivia Evening in November that we hope all competitive Korovians will join us for. Some other highlights will include, a Korovian item in 2017 House Chorals in March, Korovians vs.

Current Students Netball match in May and reunions like you’ve never seen them before.

With such a busy year ahead, it’s easy to think short-term about the goals and future accomplishments of our Club. While we keep our strong foundations, values and traditions, like all organisations, we are adapting and growing with a rapidly changing society. While you will only receive one Kovovian Magazine per year, next year, we will introduce a digital magazine multiple times a year to keep you abreast of the movements of the Club, but, more importantly, Korovians themselves. In addition, the Korovian Club will be working more closely with the Korowa Foundation to increase our philanthropic efforts and ensure the sustainability of our great school.

I thank you, all Korovians, for a fantastic year of engagement, laughter, success and the many stories you have shared with me. If for no other reason, I love being able to facilitate events that bring Korovians together just so I can hear all of the hilarious or wicked stories from your school days. I wish to thank the Korovian Club Committee for their tireless efforts this year, the next promises to be even bigger. I look forward to seeing you all in 2017 and celebrating the centenary of an amazing group of women.

KOROVIAN CLUB NEWS. Molly Owen (Evans ‘38), who celebrated her 95th birthday in February, is campaigning to have a women’s heritage museum established at the State Library of Victoria and elsewhere in Australia. Molly said, ‘Please make every effort to see that any records of work done by women which you have are lodged there so future researchers will be aware of the enormous contributions made by so many women most of us have never heard of’.

Jenny Dann (Jack ‘49) has recently moved from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast to be closer to family. Three great-grandchildren have arrived in the last eighteen months which has been an exciting time!

In honour of her 85th birthday, Stephanie Johnston’s (Dean ‘49) son, Andrew, has recently commissioned a work by Gordon Kerry to be performed by the Australian String Quartet. Sharon Draper (‘00) is the Quartet’s cellist and will be joined by guest cellist, Pieter Wispelwey, for the world premiere of Kerry’s 2nd String Quintet at the Dunkeld and Margaret River Festivals in 2017. Korovians are just everywhere! Andrew also very kindly provided a number of tickets for students and their families to attend the Quartet’s Melbourne performance in October. Ann Mitchell (Jubb ‘73) is living near Seaspray in Gippsland. She recently visited the Meeniyan Art Gallery, managed by Meg Viney (Crawley ’61). Two complete strangers had an immediate bond as soon as Ann mentioned Korowa. It was lovely to reminisce over old times. They enjoyed reminiscing even though there are many years between them: they both knew Beatrice Guyatt and some other names and agreed that they were very fortunate to have been given such an excellent education and been part of the Korowa school environment.

Jodie Lister (Cavanagh ‘91) and Kristen Adnams (Faure ‘91) have teamed together to launch their professional organising business, ‘Springtime Services’. At Springtime, Kristen and Jodie provide decluttering services and practical support for seniors who are downsizing or moving into residential care. They offer professional, compassionate support to their clients and their clients’ families, and they love what they do!

It wasn’t until Annaliese Allen (Akehurst ‘96) had children that she started looking into sun protection and learned that the average white cotton T-shirt has a UPF of only five. She was shocked to learn that following the Cancer Council’s Slip Slop Slap message is not as simple as slipping on any type of clothing.

Recognising that sun protective clothing is only helpful if you wear it, Annaliese decided to design a fashionable alternative to the rash vest. As well as providing the highest possible level of sun protection, the end result is a long way from the regular surf branded rashie!

Rosemary Davidson (Thomas ‘48) passed away on 21 November 2015.

Jo Clyne (‘98) received the first Diana Millar Award for Humanities at Korowa’s Speech Night in 1998, a prize endowed by former Head of History, Diana Millar.

Valerie Davis OAM (Ternes ‘50) passed away on 21 March 2016. Val was a volunteer for a wide variety of organisations, including several Anglican churches, the Melbourne School of Nursing Past Trainees Association and the Liberal Party. She was awarded her OAM in 1994, in recognition of her 21 years of voluntary management of Programme Two, which provided health and personal care to young mothers and their children in St Kilda and Prahran.

Barbara McCarthy (Newstead ‘66) passed away on 20 March 2016.

Anne Allardice (Wyatt ‘70) passed away on 5 August 2016 after a long battle with a brain tumour.

Jo is now the Manager of Education and Consultancy Services at the History Teachers’ Association of Victoria. Jo was appointed editor of the Years 7 & 8 History textbooks for Macmillan Publishing, in which she had to edit four of Mrs Millar’s chapters – a nice revenge for correction by Mrs Millar of Jo’s work at Korowa!

Jane Kavanaugh (Mackenzie ‘75) passed away on 20 January 2016 at her home in Carlton, Minnesota, due to complications from multiple myeloma. Jane is survived by her husband Edward, sons James and Sam and their spouses Kate Kavanaugh and Kate Dorwart, her grand- daughter Annette, mother Audrey, sisters Marilyn (Mackenzie ‘69) and Gayle Robertson (Mackenzie ‘71) and many nephews and nieces.

Sally Hornsby (‘77) passed away on 24 October 2016. Two of her younger sisters, Libby Shaw (Hornsby ‘81) and Belinda Hartung (Hornsby ‘90) also attended Korowa, as did several of Sally’s nieces, and a nephew in ELC.

DEATHS Noel Roberts (Morey ‘42) passed away on 2 January 2016. A life-long Korovian, Noel celebrated her 90th birthday in December with friends and family including school friend Helen Harvey (Banks ‘42) and daughters Anne Glynn (Roberts ‘68) and Judi Meese (Roberts ‘71). Noel will be sadly missed by all.

GIFT OF DISPLAY CASE TO KOROWA

We are delighted to be able to hang a framed portrait of Miss Margaret McPherson (Principal 1970-1990) in the foyer of the Margaret McPherson Centre for Music, which is named in her honour. It is the gift of the family of Mrs Jean Knight, beloved sister of Margaret McPherson and was painted at the same time as the official portrait in our Assembly Hall.

Thank you to Sally Cranstoun (Hargrave ‘74) and Lucy Cranstoun (‘09) for their gift to the school of a beautiful glass and timber display case.

Items donated include photo snapshots, student work books from the 1940s, uniforms, programs and school reports.

Marianne Van De Poll (Brunsting ’57) was enrolled at Korowa in 1946 while her father was in the Dutch Navy. She and her mother were brought to Perth at the end of World War 2 having been held prisoners, with many other women and children. She spent two happy years at Korowa before her family was transferred back to The Netherlands. This framed photograph of our Junior School taken in 1946/7 has travelled the world several times and Marianne arranged for the framed photo to be returned to its Korowa ‘home’.

The Korovian is moving to an annual magazine format and we are delighted to announce the introduction of a new digital publication from The Korovian Club.
