By Helen Carmody / Principal YOU WILL NOTICE ON THE COVER OF THIS EDITION OF THE KOROVIAN THAT KOROWA HAS ONCE AGAIN BEEN NOMINATED AS A FINALIST IN THE AUSTRALIAN EDUCATION AWARDS. LAST YEAR WE WON THE CATEGORY OF NON-GOVERNMENT SECONDARY SCHOOL OF THE YEAR, AND THIS YEAR WE ARE AGAIN SHORTLISTED IN THAT CATEGORY AND ALSO FOR NON-GOVERNMENT PRIMARY SCHOOL OF THE YEAR. Our application for the award in 2019 is based on our two key focus areas of excellence and world impact. Our view of excellence is that all our students should enjoy school, achieve academic success and most importantly thrive mentally and physically in a changing world. Over recent years we have partnered with a range of experts, working together on Korowa-based research in areas such as mental toughness, and the impact of mood, engagement and motivation on learning achievement. We commenced research into resilience in the workplace and we have also developed our own framework for teaching critical thinking.

Our academic programs provide skills progression designed to create a generation of thinkers, designers and entrepreneurs. In 2018, we were the first school to participate in the #Shehacks program as part of our work experience for Year 10. Our Year 8 students showcased technology and enterprise on That Startup Show and the Channel 10 Scope Science Show. In 2018, two Year 9 and 10 teams attained third and first place for their app to support students with dyslexia at the Shanghai International Youth Science and Technology Expo. We were a case-study school for the Department of Education Digital Grant program and recognized for our leadership in the area of digital literacy. We have drawn the link between social enterprise, innovation and design thinking in our new Project Empathy Year 9 program, with girls developing prototype solutions for homeless youth and pitching their products to community not for profits.

In this edition of the Korovian, you will see the way in which facilities such as our new Food Studies centre provide opportunity for hands on learning. Food Studies introduces girls to world issues such as food and resource sustainability and the science of food, whilst also providing practical and transferrable skills.

We also feature the celebration of 20 Years of the Korowa German Exchange experience. Experiential learning in the form of exchange, not only enhances cultural awareness and language proficiency, but more importantly allows girls to experience other societies and communities in order to broaden their world perspective.

We recognise that an excellent education is more than just strong academic results. It is the sum total of the Korowa experience that enables girls to thrive and achieve success beyond school.

GIRLS THRIVE IN CONTEMPORARY LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

THE 2018/2019 SUMMER BREAK SAW AREAS IN THE JUNIOR AND SENIOR SCHOOL TRANSFORMED INTO NEW MULTIPURPOSE LEARNING AND STUDY ENVIRONMENTS.

“Korowa’s VCE Centre takes up three quarters of an entire floor, providing both social, study and teacher consultation areas,” Deputy Principal, Liana Gooch, said. “We had the opportunity to renovate the space during the summer break, in consultation with its key stakeholders, our girls. We looked towards inspirational modern work spaces when reimagining our VCE Centre, and the research of David Thornburg, an authority on classroom design.”

“The VCE Centre is a multipurpose area, and the challenge was creating a space which catered to the many different study preferences of our students.

We created study pods, a series of small study tables in the corridor closest to the windows. This made effective use of a beautiful space which was previously only used as a thoroughfare. The central space with larger tables provides options for collaborative work.”

“Natural light was an important consideration.”

Ms Gooch continued. “Students spend a great deal of time in front of screens and under artificial lights, and our students expressed to us that they enjoy being able to see nature and reflect in their private study time. ” With the planned construction of a new Sports and Wellbeing Centre, the focus at Korowa is on the health and wellbeing of the students. New staff appointments included wellbeing leaders and the Head of Senior Years and Head of Cripps, charged with supporting the girls in Years 7 to 12.

The former Tuckshop was converted into a new Food Studies kitchen under the direction of Jo Nanfra, Head of Food Studies. A new School Café is run by Executive Chef Dan Kranjcic (Cecconi’s, Fifteen) and his catering company Pinwheel & Co. These renovations represent a commitment to wellbeing which has been a focus at Korowa for several years.

“The delighted faces of our students, upon seeing all the new spaces built just for them, has been the best reward,” Ms Liana Gooch concluded.

OUT OF AFRICA MALINDA (MINDY) ROBERTS CLASS OF 1996

FROM THE BANKS OF THE YARRA TO THE ZAMBIAN DESERT PLAINS, KOROWA’S FIRST ROWING CAPTAIN, MINDY ROBERTS, HAS TRAVERSED THE GLOBE.

Korowa’s first Captain of Rowing graduated from the University of Melbourne, majoring in International Finance and Marketing.

After five years with the Australian Government in Canberra, where she trained under an organisational psychologist, she gained a promotion as the youngest Assistant Director at the time, creating an award-winning graduate management program. She moved to London where she continued to consult on graduate assessment and development for FTSE 100 companies across Europe, from the United Kingdom to Russia.

After ten years in the corporate world, Mindy took on a career change and a new challenge. In 2009, she moved to Zambia to work for Norman Carr Safaris, and later, Time + Tide. She aimed to combine her interests in outdoor living, sustainable wildlife conservation, working with different cultures and her commercial drive. Over the past nine years she has worked alongside the shareholders to develop new products, rebrand the company and drive sales and marketing to broaden source market channels, increase yields, and create sustainable long-term profitability and growth.

As her photographs show, she leads an exciting life in an environment that is very different to Wheelers Hill where she grew up. Mindy returns to Melbourne a couple of times a year to catch up with family and her Korovian friends.

THE CHALLENGE TO LEARN

OUR STUDENTS HAVE MANY DIFFERENT LEARNING STYLES AND NEEDS. KOROWA EQUIPS ALL STUDENTS WITH THE SKILLS TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL. The ‘Mitre’ Gifted and Talented Program was established last year. It identifies highly able students in Years 5 to 8 and provides them with a stimulating learning environment. Korowa’s Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator, Alicia Mein, has a multi-faceted role and uses assessment data and school records, observations from other teachers, parent interviews or formal psychoeducational assessments to identify potential Mitre students.

She may then work with or observe individuals in the classroom before an invitation is made.

Recently, two teams from Korowa competed in the Interschool Academic da Vinci Decathlon, with both teams qualifying for the State Finals. Our Year 7 team finished second in the State and our Year 8 team finished in the top 20.

Alicia designs the Mitre Program in collaboration with other teachers, developing activities that extend and enrich students in the areas of Maths, Philosophy/English and STEAM for Years 5 and 6, and Philosophy, Ethics and Problem Solving for Years 7 and 8.

Some programs also seek to accelerate students to a higher level.

STEAM Co-ordinator Sam Watkins recently organised an excursion for our Year 5 and 6 Mitre students to the Melbourne Zoo. There, the students engaged in a design thinking project with zoo experts, addressing the question of caring for animals in captivity. The students are now working on an innovative design for a toy or habitat modification to present to Melbourne Zoo. Later in the year, students will participate in ‘Write a Book in a Day’ and a book launch. The upcoming Big Ideas Breakfast will provide a wonderful forum for Mitre students to listen to key ethical dilemmas and engage in robust debate. As the program gains momentum, we are proud to provide the ‘challenge to learn’ for all our students, including the highly able ones.

Freya Coker (Class of 2008) was engaged on Tuesday 5 March 2019 in Palm Cove to Ryan French.

Milly Stockdale (Class of 2005) married Rorey James on Friday 5 April 2019. Korovians in attendance included Jess Rollo, Kylie Yapp, Stef Bruce, Lauren Wilson (Jackson) and Hannah Macdougall.

Ariella Gordon (Class of 2013) will compete in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moots in Hong Kong and Vienna. This year, she will attend Cambridge University to complete her Master of Laws.

Diana Murray (Cox 1964) received her PhD from Monash University last year, aged in her early 70s.

“Further education is never wasted,” Diana says. “It still has many benefits for critical thinking and community interrelationships.” She hopes to encourage others to undertake further education.

Look out for novels by Helen Ellis (McLauchlan 1953) on Amazon. She has 14! She has travelled through Greece many times, and it features in her books.

Petah Creighton (van Hemert 1960) has retired to the Mornington Peninsula.

Over a long career teaching and lecturing in English and Literature, she is most proud of having taught in the Papunya Aboriginal Community and in Jiangyen in China.

Barbara Diane Maclean (Anderson 1948) is back in Mansfield! She first moved there from Melbourne, then onto a farm at Howqua, back to Melbourne and then to Mansfield again. Barbara has had a long career in marriage education and moved back to Mansfield after marrying her second husband, who sadly passed away in 2016.

Peggy Gray (Cousins 1949) has moved into a retirement village in Page, to be closer to her two sons.

She says that she has fond memories of Korowa and her friends, and in particular two teachers – Miss Cerutty (Geography and History) and Miss Gooding (Sport).

Penny Holloway (Class of 1967) retired from full time employment last year and now works as a Consultant in NSW. She was previously the CEO of the Lord Howe Island Board from 2013 to 2018.

We are thrilled to report that Amanda Weeks (Class of 1995) has received her new wheelchair and thanks all those in the community who contributed and the students who fundraised for her. “It’s so much easier to control, my feet have a special foot plate that is one of a kind and hand carved for me and I can get into nearly every room in the house. I don’t know how I could ever express to you all just how much this means to me.”

Congratulations Anna Shedrina (Class of 1999), the current Australian Ladies record holder in Universal Trench clay target shooting.

Anna has recently been working in the industry as General Manager of Bronze Wing Australia.

Suzanne Margaret Batt (1950) on 5/12/2018.

Adrienne Beames (1958) 27/12/2018 - Adrienne was a pioneer in women’s marathon running. She was the first woman to break three hours in a marathon. She was a leading runner in the 1970s and raced often in the US. Her father was VFL great, Percy Beames who was a sports writer for The Age. Sarah Cullen (Warren, 1994) in March 2019. Lisa Voight (Warren, 1987) is Sarah’s sister.

Jennifer Dann (Jack, 1950) on 14/9/2018 – Jennifer’s daughters Jillian (1973) and Elizabeth (1975) both attended Korowa.

She remembered Miss Guyett with much fondness, finding a generous heart behind the formidable exterior.

Jenny served on the Korowa Parents’ Association Committee from November 1964 until the end of 1968, also serving for a period as Secretary.

Margot Frances Gibson (Perdriau) 1930-2019 The School was saddened to hear of the passing of Margot, a much loved Korovian (Class of 1947).

Margot was a loyal and generous supporter of the School being a past President of the Korowa Parents’ Association, a former Director of the Korowa Foundation of which she was a Fellow, a long serving member of the School Council from 1989 to 2012 and a member of the Jessie Patrick Bequest Society.

Margot was also a dedicated member of the Korovian Club which she served with distinction. She was a Committee member for more than 50 years and, in her time, served as President on two occasions, 1971 to 1973 and in Korowa’s Centenary Year 1990 to 1992. She also served as Secretary of the Club and provided great support to the Archives.

In recognition of her service to the School a room was named in her honour in the Cripps Centre.

Margot was a person of strong opinions, and her keen intelligence, wise counsel and mentoring of so many over the years will be sadly missed.

We acknowledge with gratitude a life well lived and her lifelong commitment to the School.

We extend our sympathy to her children and grandchildren, in particular her daughters Belinda (Class of 1978) and Sandra (Class of 1980).

40 YEARS Celebrations OF ROWING

IN 1978, YEAR 11 STUDENT SUE PETTY, WAS KEEN TO ROW. SO SHE GATHERED TOGETHER HER FRIENDS, AND COX AND COACH RICHARD COULTER, AND BORROWED A BOAT FROM LAURISTON. On Sue’s own initiative, they entered a regatta.

Unfortunately, on the way to the competition, the boat was damaged and it seemed disaster had struck. A crack formed in the boat and dashed any hopes of racing that day. But Sue was not swayed.

She wanted to see if she could really make rowing a sport at Korowa. In the true spirit of our school motto, no reward without effort, she pressed ahead.

By the following year, in 1979, in conjunction with the YWCA Rowing Club, the very first Korowa crew took to the water. Rowing had begun at Korowa.

“It was just the result of a group of girls wanting to try a new sport,” Sue says, with a fair degree of humility. The School named a new Quad in honour of Sue’s contribution and it was christened at a 40 Year celebration in March.

20 YEARS OF GERMAN EXCHANGES

Since 1999, Korowa has sent students on Exchange to visit host sisters in the Veit-HöserGymnasium in Bogen, Germany, and vice versa!

Exchange experiences are some of the most memorable ones.

At the celebration event, the School acknowledged the contribution of our students and Frau Dianne Tamburro, Head of Languages, to the Exchange Program.

THE MOMENT MY PRINCIPAL BELIEVED IN ME

By Elizabeth Jaques / Class of 1969 BEATRICE K. GUYETT WAS HEADMISTRESS OF KOROWA FROM 1950 TO 1969 AT A TIME OF GREAT POST-WAR SOCIAL CHANGE. IT WAS A PERIOD THAT WAS PARTICULARLY CHARACTERISED BY CHALLENGES TO AUTHORITY AND EXISTING SOCIAL MORES AND SAW THE RISE OF FEMINISM. MISS GUYETT IS REMEMBERED BY KOROVIANS AS A HEADMISTRESS WHO SET HIGH STANDARDS IN NOT ONLY THE PURSUIT OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE, BUT ALSO IN BEHAVIOUR AND DRESS. SHE IS REMEMBERED AS A SOMEWHAT AUSTERE FIGURE. HOWEVER, THE FOLLOWING STORY FROM A PAST STUDENT SHOWS QUITE A DIFFERENT ASPECT OF HER PERSONALITY AND LEADERSHIP: I was recently talking to a friend from Korowa who reminded me it was fifty years since we had finished school. In a conversation with Ian Robertson, the Alumni Manager at Korowa, I revealed a story which I had never really shared in the past: Life at Korowa began for me in 1957 at the age of five. When I first met Miss Guyett, I was a little scared of her. I never really knew her as she was more of a remote figurehead.

How she kept up with us all was amazing.

In the middle of 1969 I was called to Miss Guyett’s office. I felt slightly uneasy as I had no idea why she wanted to see me. I was coasting along, as I only had to complete Matriculation to get into Teachers’ College.

She proceeded to discuss the reason she had called me: Why had I not applied to university or for a scholarship? Wasn’t I limiting my options?

I informed her that I had a teaching bursary and was planning on attending Teachers’ College. My father didn’t think University was necessary for girls as they would just get married and have children. She suggested to me that I should still apply, and give myself the choice and the opportunity to change my mind. She told me I had potential and it was up to me.

In January 1970, our results were published in the newspaper and I had exceeded my wildest dreams. The choice was now mine. I was given a place at the University of Melbourne, and a scholarship, and I thought about my conversation with Miss Guyett. I gladly accepted.

University became the best five years of my life. It opened up all kinds of possibilities, beyond anything I had ever imagined. I adored it all.

Miss Guyett had given me so much by taking the trouble to explain my options and encouraged me to be the best I could at a turning point in my life. Thanks to her, I worked harder and began to believe in myself. For a Headmistress of a large school to do this for a student was far beyond what was expected of her role. I only wish I had told her what she had done for me and how indebted I was for her kindness.

I never discussed this meeting with other students. I presume she did the same for us all but she was a remarkable woman and a dedicated Headmistress.

Even after I left school she sent a handwritten note when I became engaged. How she kept up with us all was amazing. I was so thrilled to receive a call from her on the day I was getting married and was really touched for her to reach out years later. Such an extraordinary woman who made her students her life.

I did become a teacher and tried to extend her legacy to my students, to encourage and inspire them to be the best they could be and reach for the stars. My own children also benefited as I gave them the same advice. Two are Pharmacists, one a Physiotherapist and another a Lawyer and two are still studying, one for a PHD and the other for a Masters’ Degree in Business Administration.

My years at Korowa gave me the building blocks and the confidence to believe in myself and to live an amazing life. Thank you Beatrice, and Korowa.

The future at Korowa looks even brighter after the purchase of property on Malvern Rd, within walking distance of the main campus in Ranfurlie Crescent.

New facilities will be built in future years across these adjoining properties.

Thank you to everyone for helping with our fundraising efforts for the Cambodian Children’s Fund last year. You have helped to refurbish the Library at Prek Toil school in Cambodia and it looks amazing!

Every year, a group of Year 10 girls visit Cambodia on the Cambodia Service Learning Journey, carrying out their own fundraising initiatives in the lead up. This year’s group will be updating us via @korowa_cambo on Instagram and have raised more than $8,000 to date.

Jessica Carson Paramedicine is one of the more unusual careers our Class of 2018 have chosen to pursue, but for Jessica it made perfect sense. “It was a course I was always really drawn to. Those experiences taught her the importance of hard work and developing resilience, which she knows will be crucial as a paramedic.

Nicole Jobson In Year 9, Nicole discovered the Australian Army offer a post-school Officer training program. Three years later, she applied for the program and was successful in their intensive interview process. “It was a bit of a shock, coming from a small girls’ school to the Army, but the Army is really trying to encourage women. Sometimes it can feel like you need to try a bit harder [as a woman], but once you show what you can do, everyone respects you.”

Once she completes the leadership program, she plans to enter the Army Reserves and return to Melbourne to study criminology and cyber security, having already completed a TAFE Certificate in IT while at Korowa.
