Our girls now have more opportunities than ever before to take their learning beyond the Korowa gates. This year some of our Year 9 and 10 girls travelled to Shanghai for the Science and Technology Stars of Tomorrow Invitational Tournament at the 7th Shanghai International Youth Science & Technology Expo 2018. Our teams won first place with an app to enhance social skills and we were awarded third place in the transportable education design section.

Our service learning journey to Cambodia is well established, as are the popular NASA tour and trips to Northern Territory, Queensland and Tasmania. A record 49 students participated in the iconic Korowa Trek this year.

This year, we introduced the Mitre Extension program for gifted and talented students in Years 5 - 8 with opportunities in Philosophy, Mathematics and STEAM. We introduced many more learning support sessions within a structured framework based on early identification of students in need and we have increased the number of specialist teachers in this area. Our girls in Years 5 – 8 have thoroughly enjoyed the new Dance subject and in 2019, due to student interest, we will introduce a Dance elective subject at Year 9.

Success beyond school is the sum of all the experiences, relationships and learning that enables an individual to become herself. Korowa has a long tradition of developing the intellectual, emotional, social and physical self. Our commitment to a flourishing life will be supported by our new Sports and Wellbeing Centre. This edition of the magazine provides a glimpse into the future of this extraordinary facility.

2018 HAS BEEN AN OUTSTANDING YEAR FOR KOROWA. OUR HARD WORK AND FOCUS SAW KOROWA AWARDED THE AUSTRALIAN NON-GOVERNMENT SECONDARY SCHOOL OF THE YEAR AT THE RECENT AUSTRALIAN EDUCATOR AWARDS. THIS IS A CREDIT TO OUR RELENTLESS PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE, DEFINED BY OUR PERSONAL BEST IN ALL WE DO. WE ARE INCREDIBLY PROUD OF THIS ACHIEVEMENT.

the growing demand in this popular curriculum area. The introduction of new STEAM subjects expanded the range of practical subjects offered and a new Media Studio will allow us to offer Media Studies courses.

Work has commenced on a major upgrade of the VCE facilities. This will add a new quiet study area, views of the oval, and include a much-needed new kitchen, ensuring our senior girls have the best available space and resources to succeed.

At the same time, we’re renovating the Junior School to include a welcoming new reception area, purpose designed library and learning commons facility and the necessary internal changes to accommodate Year 6 students in the Junior School in 2019.

Facilities are essential in providing opportunities now but most importantly they secure the future not only of our girls but for Korowa as a school. Nevertheless, it is the people of Korowa who give life and soul to our school through their relationships, support and service.

We thank John Harker, Chair of School Council, who retires form this role in 2018. John has given 18 years of service to Korowa and we thank him for his dedication and commitment. We also recognise the work of Sally Gluyas (Deputy Chair of School Council, Class of 1980), Mark Burgess and Kumar Padisetti who also complete their terms. We welcome Stuart Major as Chair of Council and Julie Catanach (Deputy Chair) and Karrie Long (Class of 1989) and Megan Pepper (Class of 1997) to the School Council.

In this edition of the magazine, you will see the faces of Korowa and be inspired by the achievements of our Korovians, staff, students and parents.

You will meet some of our talented teachers and follow the progress and lives of our alumni.

INNOVATIVE IDEAS

By Sally Giam / Marketing and Communications Officer STEVE JOBS REPORTEDLY CAME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR THE iPHONE AFTER BEING SPURRED ON BY A RIVALRY WITH A MICROSOFT EMPLOYEE. BUT IT WAS NOT ONLY STEVE’S EGO WHICH CREATED THE iPHONE, IT WAS HIS PASSION FOR TRYING NEW THINGS AND THE ENVIRONMENT OF INNOVATION WHICH HE CREATED AT APPLE. Innovation creates new opportunities and drives growth. So how do you create an environment for innovation at work?

Business Victoria suggests that you need to show that you value innovation, creating an environment where you lead by example and encourage your employees to be honest and open and share ideas and initiatives. A process for employees to assess and understand each new idea can also facilitate a culture shift. Hiring ‘diverse’ employees who understand your vision can mean alternate sets of ideas and problemsolving approaches.

Invest resources in training, collaboration spaces and give employees support.

Google’s famous ‘20% time’ allows employees to spend time working on side projects which may eventually become Google projects.

As we move towards more innovative environments, what can our children eventually bring to these workplaces?

Young workers will rely more on their interpersonal skills, problem solving and critical and creative thinking as many repetitive tasks become automated. In contemporary schools, rows of desks are making way for collaborative group tables, interactive whiteboards for both students and teachers, and technology and digital literacy are interwoven into all subjects.

Korowa encourages students to be innovators. The classroom environment allows students to speak up, to share ideas and to test assumptions, fail challenges and learn from mistakes. They must learn to code and develop a new kind of literacy and creative expression; they are challenged with new projects which address real-world issues; and they have chances to be designers, inventers and creative thinkers in new after-school STEAM workshops and in their daily curriculum.

One of the ideas Korowa’s new Mitre extension program (named after the Bishop’s Mitre which features in Korowa’s school crest) teaches children is to flip your assumptions. Students are presented with ethical quandaries and given the space to debate and sound out their own ideas. “Students often begin by seeing things in black and white, but hearing other students’ opinions, they can flip their assumptions.”

Korowa’s partnership with the University of Melbourne’s Network of Schools (UMNOS) likewise encourages teachers to be always curious and encourages collective efficacy and problemsolving to maximise growth in students.

In an environment where innovation is valued and encouraged, great ideas can spring forth.

UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT: CAROLINE PITCHER

40 YEARS OF ROWING IN 2019

CEO OF FILM VICTORIA, CAROLINE PITCHER (CLASS OF 1991), SPOKE AT OUR YEAR 12 FATHER DAUGHTER BREAKFAST THIS YEAR, REFLECTING ON A CAREER WHICH HAS TAKEN HER ACROSS THE GLOBE TO PROMOTE AUSTRALIA AS A FILM DESTINATION. Girls were thrilled to hear that through her work, Caroline has been able to assist in an operation on a polar bear and shared a cab with Chris and Liam Hemsworth in Los Angeles. She has also shown a tenacity and ambition which have served her well across ten different jobs, three career changes and two side steps. Here, we share an edited extract of Caroline’s speech:

You are all setting out on a road that is unpredictable, a road that might on occasion take you around in circles, but hang on tight because you are about to start the ride of your LIFE! And with a good dose of planning, resilience, patience, hard work and good humour you are going to love it.

I’ve worked hard, and I have achieved my place in my career by staying true to my own unique talents, my own way of learning and developing, being tenacious, focussed and competitive, knowing my weaknesses and seeking support whenever and wherever I have needed it.

Time and diverse work experiences have been key contributors to my career success. But mostly I am ambitious, I wanted a career, and I wanted to be successful in my career and I followed what I was naturally good at whilst challenging myself to build on my weaker skills.

My own dad was my number one fan. Since entering the workforce, I have successfully and deliberately built a career fan base of either more successful, talented, smarter or more experienced individuals who can I learn from and aspire to be. These professional relationships have helped smooth the path for me as I built my career. These

FROM JUST TWO BOATS TO A FLEET OF 16, ROWING AT KOROWA HAS GROWN IN POPULARITY AND INFLUENCE. KOROWA GIRLS TOOK TO THE WATER IN 1978, WITH THEIR FIRST EVER CREW RACE IN 1979.

IN 2019, WE WILL CELEBRATE 40 YEARS OF ROWING. Since the 1990s, the program has grown steadily both in participation and the number of boats. Currently, rowing is one of the School’s most popular sports with more than 70 students involved. Every student has the chance to try rowing at Year 7 and the competitive program commences in Year 8.

In recent years, the School and its supporters have invested in upgraded equipment, four new boats, a large boat trailer and coaches including Olympians and past Korowa rowers. Rowing is the ultimate team sport and we are proud to support our girls and their passions.

mentors or coaches should not be individuals that are like you or people who make you feel safe and comfortable.

They are more diverse, connected differently, should challenge you and likely be much older than you. Don’t be shy, find them, use them, for they will often be your guiding lights and may if fact help get you your next job.

As the newly appointed Director of Rowing, I intend to continue the tradition of excellence and good sportsmanship first established on the banks in 1979. As I write, we are early in the 2018/2019 season, but with some significant successes already, the signs are there for a great season..

I work for Film Victoria. It is a State Government agency that supports the film, television and digital games industries here in this state. I help fund screen businesses, productions and talent. Every day I get to play in the world of screened entertainment – it is ever changing and challenging but it is awesome fun, I love it and I care about it.

Having been involved in rowing since 2001, I have seen how the close friendships developed between teammates can last a lifetime. We look forward to celebrating the past four decades of rowing, and our bright future together, with our community next year.

I feel tremendously privileged to have received a Korowa education. The school gave me the confidence to believe in myself, to have high expectations where (as a woman) I could embrace any career possibility.

You have been working so hard and the next few months will be extraordinarily challenging. Dedicate this time to studying as effectively as you can the world WILL wait for you.

And then when it comes to your ‘SEIZE THE DAY. graduation and ‘as you journey MAKE YOUR LIVES beyond these walls’…remember what Robin Williams said in 1989 EXTRAORDINARY’ in the film Dead Poets Society.

AMANDA DERHAM (CLASS OF 2000)

Director of the Early Learning Centre

Kate joined Korowa this year as a Dance Teacher. She has been dancing since she was three years old and since leaving High School has had a career as a Choreographer and Dance Teacher.

Since completing her Masters in Early Childhood in 2015, Amanda has worked as an Early Childhood Educator. Amanda has a passion for children’s learning and development with a specific interest in the philosophy of Reggio Emilia.

Amanda is a Korowa graduate.

Favourite Moment: All the Cripps students performing an Indigenous Australian dance piece as part of our national Dance Day celebrations this year.

Highlights: My favourite moments this year have included meeting and getting to know the children in the ELC and a Science experiment cultivating microbes and learning about germs.

Best Meal: I love Japanese food, particularly sushi trains!

You Didn’t Know: I once performed in a commercial for a major whitegoods chain. I won’t tell you which one though!!

Leader You Most Admire: I really admire the French ballerina Sylvie Guillem who is 53 years old and still performing. She is still considered the best dancer in the world.

Best Meal: My Mum’s roast.

Fun Fact: I love horse riding and gardening in my vegie patch.

Since joining Korowa in 2012, Alicia has become a much-loved Teacher for our middle years’ girls.

Leader You Most Admire: Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel in 1926, and she did it wearing motorcycle goggles. She taught me about true grit. She knew it could be done, it had to be done, and she did it.

Highlights: It’s hard to pick a favourite moment from my time here, but my highlights this year include teaching my Philosophy classes and watching the first class I taught at Korowa graduate as Year 12s.

Best Meal: A Thai restaurant in Castlemaine took me by complete surprise, if you are ever visiting the area, you need to go to Naam Pla Thai.

It is so fresh and tasty, I go every time we visit my extended family.

You Might Not Know: I am a mad Hawthorn supporter and decorate my house whenever the Hawks make the Finals. Once a Channel 7 News crew even came to film me in my house!

What did you most love about attending Korowa as a student?

The sense of community that surrounds this school. Teachers that cared about each individual student and encouraged them to be the best that they could.

Highlight this year: Attending the Microsoft Ignite Conference in Orlando, USA, as a professional development opportunity. It was one of the biggest IT technical conferences I have ever attended with 36,000 delegates.

Favourite Food: Russian dumplings (pelmeni). The whole family gets together to make them and we talk about the past, present and future, and of course share a tasty meal together.

You Might Not Know: I used to spend lots of time in my school’s Physics Lab dreaming of being a Physics Teacher one day.

Leader You Most Admire: Stephen Hawking – the Physicist who proved that Determination and Positive Thinking can triumph over even the most severe limitations. I admire him for his humour and his humble nature.

Leader You Most Admire: Malala Yousafzai. She has overcome such adversity, demonstrated so much courage at such a young age and she continues to advocate for gender equality and women’s education.

2018: YEAR OF THE VOLUNTEER

Physical Education Teacher and 2019 Head of Year 9 Favourite Moment So Far: I had tears in my eyes as I watched our Prep-Year 2 girls singing on stage at Speech Night. Remarkable for their age.

Best Meal: Hard to beat the pasta at the iconic Pellegrini’s in Melbourne.

Something We Don’t Know About You: I played AFLW for the Western Bulldogs in the first season of the competition’s existence. Since then, I have worked in different AFL clubs as a player/coach/ consultant in different spaces and am now an AFLW Assistant Coach for North Melbourne. Outside of footy – golf with team mates!

Leader You Most Admire and Why?: I admire many leaders, particularly female ones. I love the way Serena Williams breaks down barriers. I love that she won’t just be known as ‘one of the best females in tennis’, but more importantly as ‘one of the world’s best tennis players’. She has so much going against her, but she is always challenging the way the media and the public think.

That’s something I would love to see our girls do – challenge the thinking!

Moira’s tasks were many and varied and included helping to organise Miss Taylor’s bridal shower, picking up her wedding dress from Valentino, assisting in organizing the wedding at Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch, maintaining Miss Taylor’s vast wardrobe and helping to oversee her amazing jewellery collection. Yes, she even got to try on the famous Krupp (Burton) diamond ring!

After graduating from Korowa in 1959, Jan returned to the School in 1960 initially as a student teacher of Art and Craft, becoming fully qualified in 1967 and remaining as a much loved teacher until 1972. She subsequently moved around country Victoria and then overseas, and upon her return settled in Glen Waverley to raise her family. Throughout the years, Jan has maintained a strong interest in the School and its welfare. She remains an active member of the Korovian Club and has for many years been its Treasurer.

She truly exemplifies the Korovian school spirit.

Moira remembers Elizabeth not only for her great beauty, talent and legendary violet eyes, but also as a warm, compassionate employer who had a generosity of spirit. Having enjoyed the delights of Beverly Hills, Moira equally enjoys her life here in the tranquil setting of Ranfurlie Crescent.

MOIRA FERGUSON-WREN Walking in Liz Taylor’s Shoes!

Moira may be a familiar face to many of you, as she has been the School Receptionist since 2007. Her interesting and varied career has included working as a Qantas Flight Attendant, a Court Reporter in Alice Springs, and after a chance encounter with Elizabeth Taylor’s personal assistant in a Los Angeles gym, Moira became a ‘go to girl’ for one of the cultural icons of the 20th century.

Jan is also a donor through Annual Giving and is a member of the Jessie Patrick Bequest Society. In addition, on most Tuesdays throughout the school year, Jan can be found in Archives assisting Sandra Turner or helping in the Alumni Office, mailing out invitations to various events and birthday cards from the School to Korovians. This year, we celebrated 20 years of Jan volunteering at the School.

All institutions need keepers of the corporate knowledge and Jan is one of those keepers - her memory for people, their interrelationships and knowledge of past events is extraordinary and is a much valued attribute by those of us who have the privilege of knowing and working with Jan. We salute you Jan for your amazing loyalty and spirit of giving.

FRIENDSHIP!

Kay Kirkwood (Harkness) and Marjorie Sinclair (Woodfull) were joint Head Prefects in 1948 and have, quite literally, been lifelong friends. They met in Year 3 at Korowa back in 1938, and even though their life beyond school took them in different career directions, their bond of friendship has remained firm and steadfast. Earlier this year, they attended a reunion luncheon and were shown this photograph taken of them in 1948 accepting the trophy on behalf of Korowa for winning the Combined Sports Athletics. This was one of many subsequent wins for Korowa!

KOROVIAN NEWS Leah Jing McIntosh (2009) has been nominated for Young Australian of the Year.

Kay Oke (Rossiter 1963) received an OAM in June 2017 for her contributions to fertility counselling and to the general community.

Giorgia Scott (2012) appeared on stage in The Dance of Death at the Belvoir State Theatre in Sydney in a performance directed

by Judy Davis and alongside Pamela Rabe, Colin Friels and Toby Schmitz.

Emma Anvari (2017, Music Captain) has been accepted into the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus as a soprano 2/ mezzo-soprano.

Daughters of Jodi Russell (1989), Amélie-Rose and Chloë-Madeleine Jessop, were christened on 30 September 2018 at the John Wilson Memorial Chapel by Reverend Fiona Raike, the School Chaplain. The girls are in Year 3 and 5 at Korowa.

Louise Page (1980) recently coauthored a new developmental model ‘The Nine Degrees of Autism’ with other experts in the field of Autism.

Wendy Suiter (1971) graduated with a PhD in Philosophy of Music from ANU in December 2017.

Diana Sawyer (Camm, 1959) recently published Queenscliff: The Harbour Story.

Los Angeles-based actress Bella Heathcote (2005) is back in Melbourne filming the psychological horror movie Relic, alongside Emily Mortimer and Robyn Nevin.

Eleanor Downie (2008) recently presented at the Swinburne Design Factory Gala on a product that she and her team designed which monitors the movements of a person with MS and uses the data to provide information about their condition. This is part of her Master’s Degree in Design Strategy.

Jeanne Chang and Sarah Yang (both Class of 2017) received well-deserved scholarships to study Engineering at Monash University.

Olympian and Captain of the Australian Women’s Water Polo Team, Rowie Webster (Class of 2005), has been nominated for the Sarah Tait Spirit Award by the Victorian Institute of Sport.

A STRONG FOUNDATION

THE KOROWA FOUNDATION WILL THIS YEAR PROVIDE FUNDING TO CREATE THREE NEW SEMINAR ROOMS IN THE LEARNING COMMONS FOR TUTORIALS AND STAFF/STUDENT CONSULTATION. OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS, THE FOUNDATION HAS GENEROUSLY CONTRIBUTED MORE THAN $300,000 TO THE LEARNING COMMONS AND PROVIDED FUNDS FOR AIR CONDITIONING IN THE MUSIC SCHOOL AND VCE CENTRE.

The Foundation’s mission is to support girls’ education and all distributions must directly benefit the students and staff in their academic, sporting or cultural endeavours. The Foundation is Chaired by Mrs Sandra Ivory (Clarke, Class of 1967) who, like all Foundation Directors both past and present, is a generous benefactor and passionate about the advancement of the School.

THE SUNDIAL NEAR THE MUSIC SCHOOL IS JUST ONE OF THE FRUITS OF THE KOROVIAN CLUB’S GENEROSITY. The Korovian Club celebrated its centenary in 2017 and has grown to nearly 7,000 alumni – a long way from its humble beginnings back in 1917 with 50 members. Since its foundation, the Korovian Club has been a passionate supporter of the School. The first recorded gift to the School was a clock in 1926 (now located in Archives), but since that time numerous gifts have been made to the School in what constitutes more than 90 years of giving.

The Korowa Foundation was established in 1990 with the purpose of raising funds to establish a corpus for the School that would allow for investment income to be generated with some of this being reinvested and some being distributed towards building projects in the School.

It also allows for the provision of Foundation Scholarships and Bursaries that enables students who otherwise would not be able to attend the School, the opportunity to receive the benefits of all that an education at Korowa has to offer. The Building Fund, Scholarship Fund, Library Fund and Endowment Fund all come under the auspices of the Foundation as does the Jessie Patrick Bequest Society and the Annual Giving Appeal.

More than $120,000 was given to the School’s Building Fund to assist in the construction of the Early Learning Centre in 1994 and the Cripps Centre in the 2000s.

This year the Korovian Club not only presented a new Processional Cross to the School, but also paid for the full restoration of the iconic sundial, originally erected by the students and staff of the School in 1938 in memory of a much loved former student and staff member, Amy Paterson, who died suddenly in 1937.

This year, the Korovian Club introduced the inaugural Robyn Price Art Acquisition Award, honouring the outstanding contribution by Robyn in her 27 years of teaching the Visual Arts at Korowa.

This new Award is given to a Year 12 student and means that, over time, the School will build up a representative collection of student art work that will not only aesthetically enhance the School, but also encourage students to continue their pursuit of creative excellence.

Known as Everton when built in 1886 the mansion was named Ranfurlie by the Knox family after their family title. Korowa’s second Principal, Miss Ethel Akehurst purchased Ranfurlie in late 1913 from the estate of the Hon. William Knox, who was elected as the first member for the seat of Kooyong in the inaugural election for the Federal Parliament in 1901.

The school relocated to Ranfurlie in 1914 and it was affectionately called ‘The House’ and from the 1960s Knox House, occupying the site near the Cripps Centre.

It was demolished in 1974 much to the dismay of generations of Korovians, (particularly the boarders whose home it had been until the 1960s) to make way for a substantial new wing of classrooms, a large Library, Art and Home Economics facilities and administration.

Since the early 1960s Wendy has lived in London, and recently enjoyed a tour of the School and understandably noticed many changes after more than six decades. However, she was delighted to see that the iconic gates in both Ranfurlie Crescent and Dorrington Avenue were still there, as are some of the magnificent trees that form part of the original Knox House landscape. The oval evoked many happy memories of sport and leisurely lunchtimes spent with friends. Wendy was particularly pleased to see the sundial in its restored glory and stood in front of the lectern that was originally located in the Assembly Hall and now resides in the Chapel. She commented that she had last stood behind it in 1956 when, as Head Prefect, she read the School Lesson! Wendy also saw her name on the Head Prefect’s Honour Board.

Wendy is the latest member of the Jessie Patrick Bequest Society and this is what prompted her visit to the School. Wendy’s mother died from tuberculosis when she was very young and, as a result, she was sent to live with her grandmother in the country. When she was in Grade 5 she returned to Melbourne to live with her father.

Wendy’s mother had the foresight to leave a bequest in her will for the purpose of her only child’s education.

Wendy’s father subsequently chose Korowa and Wendy has been forever grateful to her mother for the value she placed on her future education.

Wendy said Korowa was the turning point in her life and she spent many happy and fulfilling years at the School. In 1956 she was the recipient of a Korovian Scholarship and also won a Commonwealth Scholarship for University entrance.

As a result of her experiences and after spending many years involved in education in the United Kingdom, Wendy is leaving part of her estate to the Foundation Scholarship Fund so that others may enjoy the benefits of all that a Korowa education has to offer and in recognition of the transformative effect this education can have on young women. The Foundation and the School are so grateful for her spirit of generosity.

Thanks to the foresight of the legendary Miss Betty Johnson (who joined the staff in 1935 and had a lifetime association with the School until her death in 2008) some of the stained glass windows were saved and are currently held by the School.

In addition, a past parent, Mr William Harrison (father of Dale Shumack (Harrison, Class of 1951), happened to be driving along Ranfurlie Crescent one Saturday morning and saw the demolition in progress and had the good sense to purchase from the wreckers the impressive capitals that sat above the architraves in the entrance hall. As an engineer, Mr Harrison decided to give them to his daughter for her Victorian home in Camberwell where they were subsequently re-erected.

It is comforting to think that these graceful features now reside in the home of a dedicated Korovian where they are much admired and loved. Dale’s three daughters attended Korowa and she currently has three granddaughters attending the School.

Items donated include photos, Korowa crested tea sets, past exam papers, uniform, magazines, memoirs, prize books and a very precious 1920s navy blazer that we are delighted to have in our archival collection.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS AND NEWS Korowa became well-known for our Junior chess players this year with a great season of wins.

Three Class of 2018 students have been shortlisted for the prestigious Top Arts exhibition at NGV: Patricia Agus, Crystal Li and Lien Zheng.

Patricia Agus, Class of 2018, has been selected to work with the City of Melbourne’s youth curators at Signal.

Shireen Parasamanesh (above right), our 2019 School Co-Captain, placed third in the world at the Kake International Japanese Speech Contest in Japan.

She is the first Australian student to achieve this and only started learning Japanese in Year 7.

Lucy Johnston presented the first virtual reality artwork to be shown at the Monash University Museum of Art, alongside work by all of our Unit 1 & 2 VCE Studio Art students. Throughout the year, students stepped outside the Art Studios and into the STEAM Lab, experimenting with technology to enhance their artworks.

Korowa has had one of our best debating seasons yet, with two teams finishing among the top teams in the State. Our Year 11 team are the State Champions for DAV B Grade debating, becoming the first independent girls’ school to win since 2004. Grace Richardson, was awarded a ‘Swannie’ as the top-scoring debater in our region.

Ellen Moffatt, Head of Year 9, was recognised for her outstanding and innovative approach to education at Korowa in The Educator’s National Hot List for 2018.

During her time at Korowa, first as a student and now as a Teacher, Ellen has had significant impact on the Year 9 program.

Three Class of 2017 students received Premier’s VCE Awards: Karla Murphy was recognised as the 2017 Top All-Round VCE High Achiever and received an additional Award for German; Ann Liang received an Award for History: Revolutions; and Ella Markov (above), received an Award for Drama and was selected to perform in the best-of-the-best Top Acts.

Several Year 8 students featured on Channel 10’s SCOPE TV program as technology experts and appeared on ‘That Startup Show’ to showcase business prototypes that reduce plastic waste in the oceans.

The Library was transformed into a Harry Potter themed common room in celebration of the literary character’s birthday. We’re so fortunate to have staff and students with such creative spirit.

Sophie Hemingway, Class of 2018, was awarded the Pierre de Coubertin Award, for exemplifying the Olympic values in Sport.

Esther and Amy Roh and Annie Ma performed in their Piano Trio together live on 3MBS Radio.

Our Koristers performed in the Victorian Schools Music Festival and won a rare Platinum Award.

Several Year 7 students competed in the interschools da Vinci Decathlon, as part of our Mitre Gifted and Talented Program. The Decathlon, which featured ten different disciplines, was challenging but the girls each worked to their own strengths. The team won first place in the Creative Producers discipline and third in English.

Several Year 9 and 10 girls visited Shanghai for the first time to present their STEAM design projects at the Science & Technology Stars of Tomorrow International Tournament.

Did you know? Elizabeth Feltscheer (Drake 1963) completed her PhD more than 50 years after finishing school. A lifelong learner!

2019 COMMUNITY EVENTS

By Sandra Turner / School Archivist A RECENT DONATION TO KOROWA’S ARCHIVES IS A BLAZER WORN BY MARY COOK, A STUDENT FROM 1916-1926. IT WAS DONATED TO THE SCHOOL THIS YEAR AT A NEW OCCASION COMMEMORATING OUR SCHOOL FOUNDERS.

In May we celebrated our inaugural Founders’ Day in recognition of the extraordinary achievement of our founding Principal Mrs Henrietta Akehurst and her daughter Miss Ethel Akehurst, who succeeded her mother and carried on the Akehurst legacy for another 21 years. It was a great privilege to have the Akehurst family present at the service and Mr Jeff Akehurst, Henrietta‘s great grandson presented the School with his Aunt’s blazer for our archival collection. Mary Cook (Akehurst 1928) attended Korowa from 1916 until 1926 along with her siblings Elizabeth and John and the navy woollen blazer is now our oldest original piece of formal school uniform. The crest on the pocket is embroidered in metallic thread and the Roman numerals represent the sports teams Mary played in: VII (7) for Basketball, VIII (8) for Tennis and IX (9) for Baseball. Jeff’s daughters Annaliese Allen (1996) and Alexandra Flex (2000) carried on the Akehurst tradition at Korowa and Clementine Allen joined us in Junior School this year.

Principal from 1899-1905, Henrietta opened her School for girls in Pine Grove in Malvern initially called ‘Corowa’ and then changed to ‘Korowa’ and moved to Wattletree Road. She was committed to the higher education of girls, encouraging girls to be well educated and financially independent and was herself a resourceful, intelligent and resilient person.

Ethel was the Head Teacher and assisted her mother with the management and life of the School, before formally becoming Principal in 1906. She gave the School its intellectual and academic rigour and with unobtrusive drive and energy arranged to purchase the ‘Ranfurlie’ house and grounds and moved Korowa to our current site in 1914. She encouraged her girls to look to the future and aspire to high levels of achievement. She oversaw the development of the School Motto Palma Non Sine Pulvere and the introduction of the House System.
