SCHOOLS HAVE AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN FOSTERING GOOD MENTAL WELLBEING AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE, SO THEY CAN FULFIL THEIR POTENTIAL AT SCHOOL AND ARE WELL PREPARED FOR ADULT LIFE. AT KOROWA WE RECOGNISE THE EQUAL IMPORTANCE OF A RIGOROUS AND STRETCHING ACADEMIC EDUCATION, AND OUTSTANDING WIDER PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT. ALL ASPECTS OF WHAT WE DO AT KOROWA CONTRIBUTES TO FORMING WELL-EDUCATED AND ROUNDED YOUNG ADULTS, READY TO TAKE THEIR PLACE IN THE WORLD.

Belonging to, and actively participating in a school community, is not only a protective factor for young people, but a deeply formative experience that helps students develop, amongst other things, their character. In a broad sense, character education permeates all subjects, wider school activities and a general school ethos; it cultivates the virtues of character associated with common morality and develops students’ understanding of what is excellent in diverse spheres of human endeavour.

Character education is not a new concept. Schools have always used a wide variety of curricular and extra-curricular activities to provide character education. These include assemblies, subject lessons, dedicated character education lessons, sports, performance arts, camps, experiential learning, interest and subject learning clubs and so much more. These opportunities help young people to explore and express their character and build the skills they need for resilience, empathy and employability. Character education teaches the acquisition and strengthening of virtues, the traits that sustain a well-rounded life and a thriving society. We want to develop young adults who are confident and compassionate, students who are effective contributors to society, successful learners and responsible citizens. Character development involves caring for and respecting others as well as caring for and respecting oneself. We want our community to be one that has a commitment to serving others, which is an essential manifestation of good character in action.

We can teach young people about character. We can plan and implement experiences that provide opportunity for student voice and agency, which will see them taking action and making a difference.

A sense of purpose through commitment to the greater good, is the key to a flourishing life along with a school culture that enables students to satisfy their needs for positive relationships, competence and self-determination.

Our emphasis on service and character education is not new at Korowa and we are proud of our Korovians, who continue to make outstanding contributions to society. In this edition of the Korovian you will read about Korovian Jayce Symes (Hargreaves) Class of 1949, who was awarded an OAM in the General Division in the Australia Day Honours for service to community history and Sue Hedley, Class of 1972, who was awarded an OAM in the Australia Day Honours in 2019 for outstanding service to animal welfare. Last year I was fortunate to join Sue Lachal (Petty) Class of 1979, in Cambodia with Teachers Across Borders, where she was the Executive Director for eight years. Susie has also established two schools in Cambodia and been instrumental in the Well Water Project, aiming to increase sanitation in schools in Cambodian schools in rural areas. These are fine representatives of the women who have shaped Korowa, and they serve as exemplary role models to the generations of young women who will follow.

This edition of the Korovian highlights the commitment and action of our current students and demonstrates the ways in which we are actively promoting and teaching young people about the virtues, qualities and values that will sustain a good life, and effectively contribute to society.

As we celebrate 130 years of excellent education at Korowa, the time is right to reaffirm our commitment to the values of courage, respect, integrity and service. 2020 will be a celebration of all that is great about Korowa, and we will harness the energy and spirit of our community to realise the vision of who we can become to ensure our long and successful future. I hope to see you at our celebration events and invite you be involved and participate in the full life of our school.

INTRODUCING OUR SCHOOL COUNCIL

My motivation to serve on the School Council stems from purpose and passion.

As a Nurse my purpose in life is to be of service to others; this was cultivated as a child growing up in Papua New Guinea and was nourished further during my 6 years of Senior School at Korowa. After 20 years living away from Melbourne, I was looking for a way to reconnect with the School and in a way coming home to Melbourne also meant coming home to Korowa. Serving on School Council has been a great opportunity to action this.

Working in a female dominated profession and as a mother and stepmother of 4 daughters, I am passionate about creating a world that enables girls and women to thrive, so in joining the Council I feel I am contributing in some part, to that world. I am excited and energised to be supporting an organisation that educates our girls holistically and approaches this with an innovative, future focused mindset.

Korowa has provided an environment whereby both of my girls have flourished and they’ve had the confidence to participate in numerous activities outside the traditional classroom. This appealed to me.

My initial involvement with the school was through Friends of Rowing and I enjoyed being an active parent both on the banks of the river and behind the scenes. I realised very quickly the importance of parents being involved with the School and the impact they could have; this prompted me to look for further opportunities. School Council assists in setting the “tone” and I’m excited to be involved with an organisation that strives to stand out and emphasise the importance of Girls Education.

I joined the Korowa Council in 2013, after already serving on the KPA for many years.

I saw serving on the School Council as an opportunity to give back to a community that has given so much to our daughters and our family as a whole. I also saw it as an opportunity to contribute to Korowa’s ability to provide diverse and innovative educational opportunities for girls well into the future; honouring those in the past whose generosity had afforded the same opportunities for my own daughters. It is both a pleasure and a privilege to work with such a capable group of people, all passionate about the continued advancement of Korowa and girls education in general.

Being closely involved with the School has allowed me to be actively involved with all of my girls’ pursuits, in particular their sporting activities, which is a real passion of mine.

Karrie Long MPH,Grad Dip Critical Care, BN, RN As a Korovian, I look back very fondly on the 14 years I spent at Korowa. I joined the School Council as I wanted to give back to the School that gave me so much – a nurturing and stimulating learning environment, opportunities to challenge myself – in and outside the classroom, the belief that girls can do anything, life-long friendships and a thirst for learning (which continues today as I undertake my second set of post-graduate studies). I feel very privileged to serve with a dedicated group of Directors who are focused on overseeing the strategy that will see Korowa continue to be a leading independent girls’ school that offers a world of opportunities to its students – now and in the future.

I’ve been fortunate throughout my career to be surrounded by brilliant people that gave their time freely to help me develop and achieve.

My wife Yasmin (class of 1993) is a passionate Korovian and volunteer at the school which together inspired me to step forward to help make a difference in the lives of the girls, staff, parents and alumni of Korowa.

It “takes a Village to raise a child” and it is with this wonderful group of directors and broader Korowa community that I’m excited to work with to guide the future of the School.

When my daughter started at Korowa it was like she had found school heaven. We love the growth mindset which permeates the school, daring girls to try. Growing my own business and now working with entrepreneurs, I realise that many of the skills required for success in a rapidly changing, globally competitive world don’t fit neatly within subject boxes.

I believe that Korowa’s focus on learning from experience, building resilience and defining excellence beyond a single number, is the perfect preparation for a world of work we struggle to envisage.

The opportunity to be a small part of creating the environment at Korowa that empowers students to become leaders who shape a more sustainable, diverse and inclusive future is a genuine privilege. I hope to help more families find this slice of educational heaven!

Catherine Robson

As a father of two daughters, it was important for my family to find a school that could provide them with a safe, welcoming and stimulating learning environment. As our family became more engaged with the School, I wanted to understand more about the direction of the School and be able to use my professional skills to assist wherever possible. With the news of the capital works projects planned for the campus, I initially joined the Building Committee before being accepted into the School Council. Being involved in the new Wellbeing Centre is a small way I can give back to the School, and help support future students.

The opportunities that Korowa has provided to my daughters can be attributed to the works and strategic foresight of previous leadership, and I feel privileged to support the School moving into the future.

I am an advocate for educational institutions that provide opportunities for young women, and have previous experience as a director of independent School Councils. I am proud to be a director of Korowa, a leader, and an innovator in the education of young women.

As a member of the School Council, I am privileged to work with committed council members, who contribute to the discussion and exchange of ideas in addressing the challenges of providing strategic guidance, overseeing and reviewing Korowa’s management to ensure Korowa is pre-eminent, now and into the future, in the holistic education of young women. Young women who understand their responsibility and capacity to influence the world in a positive way.

Kathryn Kings

I have had over 16 year’s association with Korowa having first walked through the school’s gates in 2003 in search of the ‘right’ school for my then 3-year old daughter. Both our girls started their Korowa experience as part of the ELC program, with our eldest daughter, Emily, successfully completing Year 12 last year. Our younger daughter, Sarah, is commencing Year 11 in 2020. As a family we have been very impressed by the School not only in terms of it academic success, but because it provides numerous opportunities for parents to become involved, whether it be as a class representative, Parent Ambassador, cheering on the Korowa rowing crews on the banks of the Barwon River or as part of the various ‘Friends of’ groups. Such activities create a true sense of community as well as the opportunity to get to know the teachers, staff and other Korowa families. As a past Treasurer of the KPA, it was a great privilege to be asked to join the School Council this year. I am passionate about girls’ education as it provides the foundation that will enable our daughters to make the most of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead of them. Being on the Council gives me the opportunity to give back to the School that has played such an integral part in the lives of our daughters and family over the past 16 years.

Our girls leave knowing that we are proud of all they have achieved, including their participation in the many extra-curricular, service and leadership activities undertaken during their time at Korowa.

They have given so much to Korowa.

In addition to their commitment to academic studies, the Class of 2019 are creative artists, musicians, actors, committed rowers, sports women and athletes. They perform on stage, sing, dance and debate They volunteer, raise awareness of contemporary needs and issues, travel the world, appreciate diversity and so much more. They are compassionate young women who want to make a difference to society and they will go on to create a future that is full of opportunity and promise. They are an outstanding group of girls.

By K ate Tanner / Head of Cripps Kellie Lyneham / Deputy Principal Student Wellbeing There is much discussion in the world of education and the community more broadly regarding the best way in which schools and educational institutions can look beyond the inevitable end of Year 12 score, to ensure that we are preparing our students to be both academically capable, but perhaps more importantly, young people of good character. The Victorian government’s Amplify Report, encourages all schools to consider ways in which student voice, agency and leadership can be activated so that students have positive school experiences and can act as partners in school improvement.

Whilst arguably, Korowa girls for the most part, have experienced positive school outcomes for decades, Valerie Hannon, co-founder of the Innovation Unit, and author of a number of books including, Thrive: Schools Reinvented for the Real Challenges We Face, suggests that schools have the opportunity to act as ‘webs of civil society institutions powerful enough to enable humanity to address the problems which both threaten it and offer spectacular opportunities’. She argues that schools such as ours must innovate in order to help learners not ‘just pass tests or even get a job – but to thrive’.

Hannon’s challenge to consider our girls as more than their capacity to perform well academically, alongside the Amplify Report’s key goal to ensure that all students experience positive achievement, engagement and wellbeing, resonates with our KOROVI A N

School’s purpose, which is of course to develop self-aware, confident and capable young women who understand their responsibility and capacity to influence the world in a positive way.

In 2020, the Cripps staff and girls took up the challenge to look for authentic ways in which leadership and learning experiences can be reimagined to allow our girls to consider some of the challenges that they and their community are facing, but more importantly, consider ways in which they might address these challenges.

The starting point for this work was the Korowa Leadership Framework, which prioritises equally the components of Character and Competence.

KOROWA LEADERSHIP FRAMEWORK

With this framework in mind, we trialed a new approach to leadership in the Cripps Program, with one student from each Advisory Group being elected by their peers and teaching staff to act as a representative on the Cripps Advisory Team. These girls act as ambassadors for their year levels at School events; and help to build a student advocacy, sense of belonging and community within the Cripps community and beyond. Throughout the year these nine students modelled respect and inclusive behaviour amongst their peers; held meetings with staff to discuss curriculum and wellbeing; and, promoted expected norms in terms of connectedness, positive relationships and open communication.

The Cripps Leaders also helped the Heads of Year 7 and 8 to introduce the Expeditionary Learning structure in Term 4 of this year. This structure was put in place in response to the girls’ desire to address a variety of challenges that they perceived to be impacting the Korowa and the broader community. Together we developed the Cripps Citizenship Project. This Project was focused around the four different areas: Community Service, Wellbeing, Environment, and Technology, with the girls being split into smaller groups to decide on the area in which they wished to make a difference.

Through this Project, the girls engaged in an authentic project driven solely by their own sense of morality and need.

Through these projects, the girls demonstrated their ability to work in teams, problem-solve, think critically and develop proficiency and deeper understanding on global issues. The Cripps girls created high quality, authentic work that was driven purely by their sense of empathy to contribute to a better world.

In 2020, we will continue to engage in conversations with our girls about how through their actions and words, they can impact their community positively. We will be sharing with them the simple message that at Korowa we believe in the power of kindness and the values of courage, respect, integrity and service, and therefore, we expect our girls to be brave, respectful, honest, generous, and above all, kind. We will continue to seek out opportunities for our girls to demonstrate their self-efficacy through a range of different initiatives including a revised Advisory Group Leadership structure in the Senior Years; the introduction of a Learning Attributes Framework designed to encourage students and staff to monitor student learning disposition; opportunities to engage in Expeditionary style learning in Years 7-10; opportunities to improve their understanding of the way targeted and thoughtful communication can influence others; increased opportunities to engage with external experts and organisations, especially in the area of Service; and, through our wellbeing curriculum and structures across the School, helping our girls to understand the power of meaningful and true relationships in both learning and in life.

STUDENT VOICE IN THE JUNIOR SCHOOL

Within the ELC to Year 6 classes, developing student agency and voice is a vital part of their learning.

Allowing each student to share their diverse understanding of the world around them is enabling them to develop critical thinking skills, the ability to reflect as well as respect and acknowledge our differences in the world. Through curriculum programs such as social studies, students are inquiring into cultures around the world, historical events that have affected our society and their own cultural backgrounds. Incorporating advisory time, to facilitate our wellbeing program allows the students to share their thoughts and feelings in a safe environment, which has developed a sense of trust and community within the classrooms.

Through our leadership and buddy programs, the students have been able to further develop their skills in the following areas: communication, decision-making, organisation and action planning. In their portfolios, the mentors and Captains have worked closely with the committee members to enable all Year 6 girls to develop these skills and have the opportunity to develop the self-confidence and capacity to lead a group.

Students are thinking locally, nationally and globally to develop an understanding of the world around them.

During International Women’s Day, the Social Justice Captains, Emily Bell and Nevani Pillay, led the committee at Assembly and encouraged all the students from ELC 3 to Year 6 to decorate a paper person based on what the girls strive to be when they grow up. The jobs ranged from mums, teachers, astronauts, scientist to doctors and lawyers. It is evident that our girls have great confidence that they can move in a diverse range of careers.

Similarly, for International Day of the Girl and Children’s Week, the Junior School was exploring the rights of girls, women and all children. The right to life, education, health, speech and protection was explored and discussed. Nevani Pillay’s powerful article “We are finding our voice, but who is listening?” in The Age is an outstanding example of how our girls view the world and want to take action.

Following her trip to Cambodia, Year 2 student Odette Lyneham was inspired by the work of the Junior Leadership students’ Cambodia Children’s Fund. She read books to the Kindergarten children and noticed that they did not have as many books as we had in our school library and wanted to help. Odette prepared a proposal for me and with the support of senior students, Junior School leaders and staff she led a book drive in our Junior School Children’s Week. To raise funds for our book drive, the ELC to Year 6 students came to school in their pyjamas, donating a gold coin.

This event raised $600 on the day, as well as another $600 of book donations

These are just two examples of how girls are taking action, thinking globally and wanting to make our world a better place. Many of our students are participating in activities and events within the school community as well as in the local environment. As the future leaders of our society it is essential that we guide and nurture their voices as well as their ability to question and challenge the world around them.

GIRLS ARE FINDING THEIR VOICE – BUT IS ANYONE LISTENING?

THIS YEAR, I’VE SEEN LOTS OF GIRLS LIKE ME TAKE A STAND AND SPEAK OUT. EMMA GONZALEZ IN AMERICA IS SPEAKING OUT ON GUN VIOLENCE AFTER HER CLASSMATES WERE ATTACKED. SHE AND HER FRIENDS SWORE THAT THEY WOULD MAKE SURE THAT IT NEVER HAPPENED TO ANYONE ELSE. Leah Namugerwa, who is only 15, saw how some people were affected by climate change and decided to take action. I was amazed at how she sat down with the Director of Water Academy in Switzerland to discuss climate solutions. I also thought it was inspiring that she planted trees on her birthday.

I see Greta Thunberg using her voice to lead a global movement on climate change. But I also see some world leaders and the media criticise her for being too emotional and causing anxiety in young people.

Is the problem that our world leaders are men and that the media is mostly run by men? Maybe this is why they don’t like what girls have to say. Almost a quarter of our population are girls. If we put it into perspective, does that mean a quarter of the world is being ignored?

I am worried that even though we’ve seen a few girls doing important work this year, that too many other girls do not have a voice to express their own thoughts and opinions.

Malala Yousafzai, another girl who almost died because she had an opinion, has talked about this. She said “I raise up my voice, not so I can shout but so that those without a voice can be heard... we cannot succeed when half of us are held back.”

Though it’s true there are lots of men who have helped girls and women move forward, like my dad. He is the cofounder of Culturally Diverse Women.

He is creating equal opportunities for women of colour, and this will benefit my sister and me. My dad is encouraging and wants me to achieve my dreams.

But I still wonder that by the time I enter the workforce in 10 years (2029) will things be equal and fair for me? Change is not happening fast enough. By 2029, inequality will still exist, especially for girls of colour.

That’s why my wish on International Day of the Girl is that people will truly listen to the girls and women taking action and speaking out and not try to make them be quiet. Their voices mean something.

I AM A GIRL. I AM PART OF THE NEXT GENERATION WHO WILL ONE DAY LEAD. AND I’M TELLING YOU THAT WHAT WE NEED MOST IS FOR OUR CURRENT LEADERS TO NOT ONLY PAUSE AND LISTEN TO GIRLS ABOUT WHAT THEY NEED TO DO TO PROGRESS, BUT ALSO TAKE ACTION TO MAKE CHANGE ALONGSIDE THEM, SO THAT FOR MY FUTURE AND ALL GIRLS’ FUTURES, EQUALITY WILL BE A REALITY AND NOT JUST A DREAM.

Girls’ voices are loud, but I fear that sometimes people in power don’t really hear us. I think that sometimes they are afraid to give up their roles and their positions in the world.

2020 SCHOOL CAPTAINS KELLY CHEN I am an international student.

My journey of becoming School Captain started with a call.

It was a call from one of my friends, asking me whether I’m going for School Captain. Shocked as anyone could be in that situation, for a whole night, I had been thinking about the position and what it means to me.

I finally came to the conclusion that to me, School Captain is a position mostly behind the scenes. Students see previous School Captains during events and assemblies, but what they don’t see is how much effort they put into organising events behind the scenes.

But what I really admire is these School Captain’s courage to stand on the stage, present a speech normally and being such good friends with all year levels. That’s what I want to be like next year. As an international student, I want to show the whole School the possibilities and capacities in students, just like what the school motto says, “No reward without effort.” I simply wish that whenever students face challenges and are not sure about what to do, they can be influenced by my actions to give it a go. Just do it. It’s that easy.

Ashamed to say, I barely knew anyone from the younger year levels who smile and wave to me every time they see me approaching. Therefore, I’d like to connect more with the younger year levels next year starting by remembering their names.

My experience at Korowa has taught me the importance of courage, respect and inclusion. Multi-culture has always been a proud element at Korowa and I want to get more international students like me to be involved and participate in School activities and events.

It’s been a great honour for me to be elected as School Captain for 2020. I feel extremely excited and am looking forward to working with the Leadership team. Hopefully, our combined efforts can have a positive impact not only on the students, but also the wider School community.

SOPHIE CARNE The sense of community at Korowa makes it a very special place for all who spend time within the School. Having the unique opportunity to form connections not just within but across year levels is incredibly exciting and something I believe enriches our student culture.

During the recent school holidays, I embarked on a spontaneous journey to the Australian alpine region to learn how to ski, something I have always wanted to do. During this experience, I became very closely acquainted with the beginner ski runs. Whilst the majority of people around me were having lessons, there were a couple of younger kids who were very good! One in particular caught my eye, not just because she skied so well, but because she was there supporting a friend who was still learning, giving her a hand when she fell over.

At the end of the trip I was waiting outside the lodge with my school bag when I heard someone say; “I go to Korowa too!”. Jazzy was in Year 4 and was there practicing for the P-12 Korowa Snowsports trials. I later found out from one of her peers that she was not only an excellent skier, but also a compassionate one, who was always there to help her friends, which reminded me of the two girls I had seen skiing down Burke Street.

This interaction made me reflect upon the importance of each girl’s unique contribution to the Korowa community – through her role in school life and her relationships with those around her. It made me reflect upon the level of drive and support I see every day, evident in girls as young as Jazzy and reaching as far from Korowa as the ski slopes. This stuck with me and clarified my vision for 2020.

I strive for a sense of belonging for everyone by building enduring relationships to support our vision for Korowa. As School Captain, my aim is to create an environment where members of the community know they are valued for their unique contribution, can express their ideas and have taken action to make their School experience the best it can possibly be.

Being closely involved in Korowa’s co-curricular life, I aim to reflect the values of girls across the School and support their goals, whether in leadership or other areas. Looking out across the hall during whole School assemblies, it is amazing to see a room full of so many familiar faces belonging to people I know and many I have yet to meet. I look forward to working with these students and staff members, and eagerly anticipate the experiences 2020 will bring.

I stand for acting with integrity and having as positive an impact as I can on our community, through all my interactions and decisions.

Next year, I look forward to working with Kelly alongside the 2020 Leadership team and students, to explore opportunities to engage in service and experiential learning, as well as to uphold long-lasting Korowa traditions, in order to further Korowa’s positive impact on the wider community.

Korowa has given me many opportunities to grow and in my last year of school, I very much look forward to giving back and serving the community through this role by supporting each member of the community throughout 2020.

FOR KOROWA’S STUDENTS OF GERMAN

By Dianne Tamburro / Head of Languages Three Year 10 Korowa students were recent winners of the Goethe-Institute’s Enterprise German initiative, a competition in which schools across Australia work together with German companies to create new ideas or products.

Meghna Nagarajan, Mitha Mallichetty and Tian Jin developed a concept called ‘Fridge-Kühlschrank’, a software program that connects to your home fridge and provides people with personalised recipes, updates on food levels and even lockable sections of the fridge for storing occasional treats.

We also congratulate Arynn Chow, Sarah Coombs and Charlotte Li whose team was a Finalist in the top ten.

The students worked with the Australian branch of SAP, which is Germany’s biggest company and provides software solutions to businesses around the world. The key point of contact was Sebastian Kress, Head of Business Development at SAP Melbourne. Sebastian attended the Veit-Höser Gymnasium in Bogen (the host school for our exchange students).

Korowa’s winning entry was up against 96 competitors from around Australia. The judges were particularly impressed with the creativity of the idea and the accompanying stop motion video used to market the product.

Our students recently collected their prize at a ceremony in Sydney, but the journey is not over yet.

The next step is the international competition in the Asia-Pacific region, in which Korowa will represent Australia against a diverse group of entries from New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia. You can vote for Korowa’s entry at the Goethe Institute website.

The competition highlights Korowa’s successful participation in international events and the diverse talents and interests of our students who are studying German vocabulary and grammar, and also creating new business ideas.

Moreover, the competition demonstrates how language skills can be put to use in the real world.

As Sebastian stated, SAP’s day-to-day work involves developing new products that can be successfully marketed to customers. Students, like our Korowa team, with German language skills and an innovative mindset are well-placed to grasp opportunities at companies like SAP in the future.

Congratulations to Meghna, Mitha and Tian and good luck for the next stage of the competition!

LIFE AFTER KOROWA STEPHANIE GLEESON CLASS OF 2011 What tertiary study pathway have you taken since finishing Year 12 in 2011 and why did you take this pathway? After completing Year 12 in 2011, I studied a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Melbourne and majored in Marketing and Accounting as I saw myself forging a career in the corporate sector. After graduating, I knew I wanted to complete further studies but decided to get some professional experience first before deciding what I wanted to study. I moved to London when I was 21 and lived and worked there for a couple of years. I am so glad I took a break before continuing with postgraduate study, as when I returned, I had a real clarity and focus of the direction that I wanted to take my career, and it was completely different from what I had originally anticipated. I realised that if I was going to be working 40 hours a week, I wanted to do something with my time that was purposeful and is a positive impact on society. I knew I wanted to get work in the not-forprofit space, so went back to study in 2017 and am currently half way through completing a Master of International Development at RMIT University part-time, whilst working full-time. Development studies looks at how we can improve individuals’ and communities’ livelihoods, through a vast range of areas including sustainability, poverty reduction, gender equality, health and economic empowerment.

You currently work at CareerTrackers Indigenous Internship Program as an Advisor. What attracted you to this role? Can you share a little about what you do? Around the same time I started my Masters, I landed a role at CareerTrackers as an Advisor. CareerTrackers is a not-for-profit social enterprise that aims to address the lack of diversity and inclusion in corporate and professional Australia, particularly for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. As an organisation, we work with an 800 strong cohort of Indigenous university and high school students and support them to excel academically and professionally by linking them with professional internship opportunities and mentoring support. Just under half of Indigenous students who commence a university degree go on to graduate and this is something that needs to be addressed. I’m really passionate about changing the narrative of Indigenous Australians to one of excellence. I currently work closely with about 30 students on a one to one basis. A typical day for me includes mentoring sessions with students, facilitating workshops for students on work readiness and meeting with corporate companies who are looking to create a more inclusive and culturally safe workplace.

GERMAN EXCHANGE, 2011 I still work in a corporate setting as I initially envisioned, but in a role that is far more fulfilling than I could have imagined. I feel very privileged to work for a company that is actively driving social change. My role has really made me unlearn and relearn a lot of what I knew about Indigenous culture and I think every Australian has the responsibility to educate themselves on Australia’s 60,000+ year old history, as well as the challenges and injustices that persist today for Indigenous communities and how we can work collectively towards reconciliation.

How have your Korowa experiences shaped who you are today and how do you see your place in the world? Reflecting back on my school years, Korowa definitely helped foster many of my passions and skills that remain an important aspect of my life today. History was always my favourite subject, I had two incredible teachers, Mrs. Mullins and Ms. Phillips who both inspired in me a curiosity for understanding different cultures, ideas and histories, as well as recognising the importance of considering different perspectives and ways of knowing. Thanks to Frau T, learning German has also greatly impacted my sense of self. Speaking another language forces you to get comfortable with the uncomfortable, you will make grammatical errors and grapple with being misunderstood but I think it also really helps you develop empathy and patience for better understanding others. I have a huge amount of respect for the many people living in Australia with English being their second or even fifth language. German exchange was definitely out of my comfort zone at the time but I am still close friends with my exchange sister and we’ve caught up a few times over the years. Another special thing about Korowa to me is that personally, I always felt comfortable to just be myself and through that I met some amazing likeminded school friends that I am still great mates with today. Even though we have all gone in different directions in our careers and lives now, we have maintained such a solid relationship because of our unwavering support for one another that was built during our time at Korowa.

PROJECT EMPATHY AND SOCIAL ACTION

By Liana Gooch / Deputy Principal How often have you heard the phrase ‘to stand in someone else’s shoes’? What does this really mean?

For our Year 9 students in 2019, their service work has centred around the understanding of empathy and compassion as key elements of what make us human. The introduction of Project Empathy in 2019 sought to assist them to better understand these emotional actions and translate them into authentic service.

Using the challenge of homelessness in Melbourne as their focus, our students initially experienced the process of standing in someone else’s shoes helping to break down stereotypes and misconceptions in a variety of ways. Firstly, virtual reality allowed them to follow the journey of someone who became homeless and observe their experiences and their disconnection from the community. Decision making as part of an online simulation helped them realise how easily people could find themselves being homeless. The reality of homelessness became evident for our students from a talk delivered from a young woman who became homeless in Year 8. This young woman provided a real face and story for our students and highlighted the many forms of homelessness and how it affects people from all walks of life.

This year, our students incorporated design thinking into their week-long City Cite experience by developing an innovative service or product to assist the homeless. Students also visited a variety of providers or venues such as Urban Seed, Front Yard, the Magistrates Court, and the Big Issue to learn about homelessness from different perspectives. Presentations from St Kilda Mums and Boomerang Bags allowed students to understand different approaches towards service with a sustainability aspect as both organisations focus on ways to reuse goods or refashion them into new forms.

The variety of experiences at City Cite allowed our students to engage in the first phase of design thinking which is to empathise and genuinely understand the reality of problems that may affect the homeless in order to consider some potential solutions. Working collaboratively in teams, students develop an array of pitches for innovative products or services that could assist the homeless.

Students contacted existing organisations to answer questions related to their potential projects.

Examples included a business collective that supports homeless people to further develop and apply their skills to create small businesses in a pop-up space. One group developed a service KOROVI A N

concept around a dispenser allowing homeless people to access free sanitary products in public spaces. ‘Chop for Change’ enabled hair salon patrons to fund roaming hairdressers who were located in city spaces to provide haircuts for the homeless. Another group developed a project about an interactive touch screen around the city which would provide details of services that could assist homeless people.

Our students have demonstrated a real affinity with sustainability and service. Some of the activities included students preparing meals for people in need for the Father Bob program. Working with Yarra Gatekeeper, students learned about sustainability and waste reduction along the Yarra River and were also involved in a clean up activity.

Working at the Brotherhood of St Laurence Social Enterprise Warehouse, students worked to sort, clean and price donated books. One group also volunteered with the organisation’s Breakfast Club program for children. A discussion with the 2020 Social Service and Environment captains, who are working together to pursue some common goals decided to work with additional service organisations during the Year 9 Urban Challenge.

After presentations about St Kilda Mums and Boomerang Bags at City Cite, students worked to clean, sort and bundle items that could be provided to families in need. At school, several staff sewed while students cut patterns and material for Boomerang Bags. Material is sourced from recycled linens and clothing. The intention is that the bags can be taken to supermarkets and market locations where people can use and return them instead of using plastic bags.

As part of our Urban Challenge program, groups of Year 9 Korowa students participated in the Yarra Riverkeeper program, and were tasked to sort and tally the collected trash from the Yarra. The day began with a tour of the reed beds on the banks of the Yarra. The amount of micro plastics strewn across the reeds were astounding - it was almost as if it had snowed, with the lining of garish white styrofoam beads amongst the healthy brown reeds. However, the surprises didn’t end there.

Our next assignment was to sort and audit the waste gathered from the Yarra. The waste had been placed in approximately 20 full industrialsized bags; the amount accumulated was blatant proof that this problem had persisted for far too long. What struck me most was the sheer amount - because you’d never see this amount of waste floating in the Yarra. It just goes to show the immense work of others who maintain the Yarra. In the end, working hard as a group for the better part of the morning and afternoon, we managed to sort four big bags of waste. Plastics seemed to make up the bulk of waste - my friend and I counted over 1100 pieces. Furthermore, the breadth of variety in the trash we’d found was, frankly, baffling. We’d even discovered a fully-intact vacuum cleaner! As I reflect on the week, giving back to the community, and to the Yarra which had sustained us for so many years was a heart-warming experience. It opened many eyes in my group to the importance of maintaining our waterways and the vital role we can continue to have as community members.

Project Empathy continues to evolve. Next year, our focus will be ‘What is the story of homelessness in Melbourne in 2020?’ Korowa has developed a relationship with the City of Melbourne and some of its associated organisations that support the homeless. Our students will be learning more about the work of the City of Melbourne and partner organisations which will culminate in an innovative exhibition to coincide with Homelessness Week during the 3 – 9 August next year. Students will acquire an array of valuable technical communication skills in conjunction with this project which can be applied beyond Project Empathy. We are very excited about this project and look forward to sharing more details in 2020.

As Director of Enrolments at Korowa, I have the privilege of meeting each and every family who join our school community. Being a migrant to Australia myself, I appreciate the value of connection and the sense of belonging that a community such as ours offers.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the South African Anglican cleric and theologian, known for his work as an anti-apartheid and human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, referred to the people of South Africa as the Rainbow Nation. A nation that had its first democratic election in 1994. A nation of 11 official languages. I have always thought that if Archbishop Tutu was still alive he might consider loaning that title to Melbourne on occasion too.

With 72% of our students being born in Australia, and our total student population representing more than 22 different countries, cultural groups and languages, I believe we have so much to learn from one another.

As with most first-time visitors to Melbourne, Maya Gregory (Year 11) found the weather somewhat confusing. Being born in Malaysia and having also lived in Brisbane, Dubai and Qatar, Maya brings a global approach to her Year 11 class and is confident to share her opinion and experiences with her peers. Maya’s school experiences have been particularly academic in her previous schools, but what Maya really appreciates here is the positive mindset towards student wellbeing and the added focus we place on educating our students about what teenage girls face in today’s modern world – something that was not easily discussed in the Middle East.

Anna-Nikol Vladimirova (Year 10) was born in Pleven, a little country town in Bulgaria. Anna has

called Melbourne home since 2009, but has also lived in Spain! Did you know that in Bulgaria, it is considered polite to bring your own slippers when you visit someone else’s house? Anna believes that cultural diversity is the idea of a multitude of cultures and traditions interacting in a positive and harmonious manner.

Lily Doan (Year 8) has enjoyed learning about Australian culture and language since joining us this year. Having grown up in Vietnam, Lily enjoys sharing meals with her family and helping her Mum cook. In the Vietnamese culture, “no meal is complete without rice”. Lily says that despite the cultural differences, teenage girls are the same in Vietnam and face the same challenges as most Australian girls.

Incoming International School Captain (2020) Nancy Tang and future School Captain (2020) Kelly Chen, were both born in China. Both students were highly animated in their explanation of the “festivals” celebrated in Melbourne which included this thing called “footy” and “horseracing”. Kelly is really happy to see all students embrace our celebration of Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival. She would like to encourage more students to ask questions about the reasons for these festivals and to know that they mean more than just very excellent dumplings! When Nancy joined Korowa in Year 9 she was surprised by how much time was spent outside the academic classroom, learning more about themselves as young women, rather than focusing on textbook learning – something very foreign to her previous school in China. Kelly believes that through knowing each other’s culture we can understand our values more, which in turn teaches us to accept and understand our differences and similarities.

Our Chinese community at Korowa represents families from a vast number of provinces across China and our Parent English Group that meets weekly, has found not only a new vocabulary and local Australian knowledge, but also friendship and kindness. We encourage all parents who are interested in joining this community group to come along to excursions or weekly meetings.

Apart from our Language teachers at Korowa, our staff body comprises people from all over the world: France, Japan, Germany, England, South Africa, Russia, Ukraine and Malaysia to name a few.

In our ever-changing world, it’s important to know and understand that diversity enriches our lives, both professionally and personally. It brings our different perspectives and backgrounds together

and it creates a synergy that may not have been present before. This ultimately results in greater creativity and better ideas in all that we do.

We teach our students that diversity means understanding that each individual is unique, and that we can honour and recognise these differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, ethnicity, political beliefs or other ideologies.

On a more personal note, I have always been aware of the people and cultural groups who have shaped my life, and the amazing stories they have shared, and I encourage you to find someone new with whom to share your story. We truly have so much to learn from each other.

HELEN TOPE (CLASS OF 1980) ATTENDED KOROWA FROM 1968 AND SHE SERVED AS HOUSE CAPTAIN OF JAMIESON AND AS SPORTS CAPTAIN. HER SENIOR SCHOOL STUDIES FOCUSSED ON THE MATHS AND SCIENCES. Helen has been a committee member of the Korovian Club since 2014, is a member of the Korovian Choir and is, along with her husband, an Associate Fellow of the Korowa Foundation. Helen was elected as the President of the Korovian Club in 2019.

Helen studied science at Monash University, completing a Bachelor of Science (Hons.) in 1984, and a PhD in Chemistry in 1992.

Following her studies, Helen has built more than 25 years’ experience in environmental policy development, including more than 15 years with the Environment Protection Authority of Victoria.

She has worked on ozone layer protection, climate change, air quality management, chemical and hazardous wastes management, and as an emergency responder to environmental incidents alongside Victoria’s emergency services.

Since 1995, under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme, she has been co-chair of one of the Montreal Protocol’s expert technical committees. She is also a member of its Technology and Economic Assessment Panel, where she provides leadership and expert technical advice on medical and chemical uses of ozonedepleting substances to the Montreal Protocol, the international treaty for protection of the ozone layer.

Helen’s work has been acknowledged by the Australian Government and she has won numerous international awards, with particular recognition from the United Nations.

Helen is now an environmental consultant with her own business, Planet Futures, providing services to government, industry and other organizations on climate change, ozone-depleting substances, and related issues.

She continues in her leadership roles within the Montreal Protocol and regularly travels overseas presenting at conferences and chairing meetings regarding ozone layer protection and climate change. True to her convictions, Helen has recently become the proud owner of a Tesla!

KOROVIAN NEWS THE FIRST GROUP OF TREKKERS AND STAFF 1994 Korowa celebrated the 25th anniversary of its iconic Year 9 outdoor education experience Trek on Friday 14 June. It was a night of fond memories and much laughter. The School welcomed both past and present Korowa students and staff and past and present staff from our much valued partner over the last 25 years, Outdoor Education Group (OEG). It was particularly memorable to welcome back those who went on the first Trek in 1994. Korowa’s 7th Principal, Dr Ros Otzen, spoke about the early beginnings of Trek and the School paid tribute to her, along with past staff members, Dotty Dhaeze and Barbara Stowe who were both instrumental in the success of the program in the early years.

All present were so pleased that 25 years later Trek remains an integral part of the Korowa experience. The total number of Trek graduates over the last 25 years has grown to an incredible 925 Korovians.

KOROVIAN CLUB – GENEROUS SUPPORTERS OF THE SCHOOL The Korovian Club has continued its active support of the School.

The School was delighted to accept the generous donation of two altar frontals to the John Wilson Memorial Chapel, one for use during Advent and the other for Lent.

The frontals were commissioned from Dream Stitches, a community-based sewing program established by the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne, in partnership with the Anglican Parish of Box Hill. The program sees volunteer skilled women, work oneon-one with refugee women to teach them skills to make clothes for themselves and their families, and also to supplement their income. The Korovian Club were keen to support this program as it directly benefits refugee women.

As part of the School’s 130th birthday celebrations in 2020, the Korovian Club have generously commissioned a bronze statue of Jessie Patrick, Korowa’s first student. It will stand near the School’s historic entrance gates in Ranfurlie Crescent and will be a very welcome addition to our landscape.

The Korovian Club also co-hosted an afternoon tea for the Class of 2019 and their parents at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club following a farewell Chapel service. This occasion acted as a formal introduction to the Alumni Association. The Club presented each student with a candle and a key ring as symbols of their new life beyond the School.

At the recent Annual Art Exhibition, the Korovian Club also funded the Robyn Price Art Acquisition Award that was awarded to Year 12 students, Millie Marchant and Sophie Usatoff. Their work will now become part of the School’s collection.

OAM AWARDS FOR SERVICE

SUE HEDLEY OAM (CLASS OF 1972) ANIMAL RESCUE CAMPAIGNER

Sue was awarded an OAM in the Australia Day Honours in 2019 for outstanding service to animal welfare. Sue is the founder of Saving Animals from Euthanasia Inc (SAFE), which she started in Karratha in 2003. Under Sue’s leadership, it has grown to 12 branches stretching across Western Australia.

SAFE is a registered charity that rescues animals and cares for them humanely, using foster care. As Sue states “in foster care, animals can relax and live in a loving home while waiting to be adopted. This use of foster care instead of shelters also lets us get to know the animals’ personalities which helps us make better matches - helping people find companionship with the pets who suit them”.

As distances are vast in Western Australia and many of SAFE’s branches are located in remote areas, with small populations, the prospect of rehoming in these areas can be limited. Therefore, SAFE regularly fly animals to their adoptive or foster homes to areas where there is a larger population. Sue is ably supported by hundreds of volunteers who carry out a variety of roles such as fostering, fundraising and transport.

Sue’s dedication has previously been recognised when she was awarded Excellence in Volunteer Management at the WA Volunteer of the Year Awards in 2013 and in 2018, SAFE was the national winner in the Jetpets Companion Animal Rescue Awards for Outstanding Rescue Group.

Since its inception, SAFE has rescued, de-sexed and rehomed more than 26,000 animals.

The School salutes not only Sue’s well-deserved national recognition, but also her passion and commitment to animal welfare. We were delighted to welcome Sue back to Korowa when she visited Melbourne in May this year.

Jacye has made a significant contribution to the communities of Yarrawonga, Mulwala, Wilby, Lake Rowan and Almonds and districts during her lifetime. She has particularly contributed to the Yarrawonga Mulwala Historical Society, St Cuthbert’s Anglican Church, Yarrawonga, St Bede’s Church of England, Lake Rowan, Yarrawonga and District Hospital and the Almonds Tennis Club.

A DIVERSE CAREER AND A COMMITMENT TO SOCIAL JUSTICE Sue Lachal (Petty Class of 1979) was honoured earlier this year, at our celebration of 40 Years of Rowing, for her pivotal role that saw Korowa take to the water for the first time in a rowing regatta in 1979. At school, Sue loved sport and so upon graduating from Korowa, it was a natural progression to go on to study Physical Education at university.

Sue subsequently commenced her teaching career at Caulfield Grammar before moving on to Ruyton as Director of Sport, where she established Ruyton’s highly successful rowing program and was, for some years Director of Rowing. Sue also served on the Head of Schoolgirls’ Committee for many years.

Sue married Leon Lachal, who was also a rower and they went on to have three children, Amelia, Lily and Gus - you guessed it - all of whom went on to be rowers!

I am sure Sue never realised just what an important part rowing was going to play in her life from those early beginnings at Korowa.

But, there is so much more to Sue than just her involvement in rowing!

Realising how powerful education is in transforming lives and with a deep commitment to social justice and an awareness of the privileges she had been given, Sue had a ‘career’ change and has, for the last 14 years, volunteered in Cambodia with

Teachers Across Borders of which she was the Executive Director for 8 years.

Sue visits Cambodia twice a year to run professional development workshops for Cambodian teachers, giving these teachers the necessary skills to help transform young lives.

Not content with this, Sue has also established two schools in Cambodia, the first funded by her husband Leon’s company and the second by the company’s co–workers, combined with the help of Camberwell Rotary and friends.

More recently, Sue has worked on the Well Water Project that aims to increase sanitation in schools in Cambodia and Sue is proud of the fact that this now totals 18 schools.

Sue is currently working on her PhD at RMIT University where the subject of her research and thesis is investigating socially engaged practice in terms of gifting in Cambodia. The School is proud of Sue’s passion for education and commitment to social justice.

She truly personifies Korowa’s motto - ‘No reward without effort’ so ably demonstrated in her life journey since leaving school.

Sue is a second generation Korovian as her mother and aunt attended Korowa -Phillippa Petty (Beauchamp Class of 1952) and Virginia Beauchamp (Class of 1952).

Jennifer Carra (Bell Class of 1953) on 21 June 2019. Jennifer was member of the Jessie Patrick Bequest Society. Jennifer’s three granddaughters all graduated from Korowa - Hayley (Class of 2010), Laura (Class of 2013) and Georgia (Class of 2017) Gillian Clifford (Farley Class of 1947) on 18 June 2019 Margaret Lawrey (McIntyre Class of 1952) on 16 August 2019. Margaret’s daughters attended Korowa – Jennifer Allen (Lawrey Class of 1976), Deborah Kershaw (Lawrey Class of 1978) and Phillipa Allen (Lawrey Class of 1981). Her sister also attended Korowa – Sue Caddaye (McIntyre Class of 1953) who died last year.

Celeste De Highden (Young Class of 1989) and Elle Slawinski (Young Class of 1993). Her sister also attended Korowa Sharon Goldsmith (Jones Class of 1961) Julie Taylor (McCulloch Class of 1990) who attended Korowa from 1977 to 1990 died on 19th October 2019. Julie’s sisters Sally Morris (McCulloch Class of 1985) and Caroline Wessley (McCulloch Class of 1986) also attended Korowa. We also extend our sympathy to her husband, Brad, her children, Maddie and Jay, and her parents Ian and Pam McCulloch.

Vivian Treloar (Class of 1960) passed away on 5/12/2019. Vivian was a Prefect in her final year. Her sister, Margaret (Joy) Oliver (Treloar, Class of 1954) also attended Korowa as did Vivian’s daughter, Natasha (Class of 1990).

Norma Lawry passed away on 4/12/2019. Norma started at Korowa in 1968 in the Knox House office under Miss Guyett and left in 1972 due to her husband’s work transfer overseas. She subsequently returned to Korowa in 1976 and became Miss Margaret McPherson’s secretary for the next 17 years retiring at the end of 1991 after Dr Ros Otzen’s first year as Principal. She was a much-valued member of staff. Norma was made an Honorary member of the Korovian Club in recognition of her years of dedicated service to the School.

Sarah Cullen We are sharing with the Korowa community the passing of Sarah Cullen (Warren Class of of 1994). Sarah bravely fought breast cancer for four years embracing every treatment and wellness option available. She passed peacefully at home earlier this year surrounded by her loving husband Christian, her son Oliver and several close family members. In the words of her daughter Matilda: “Mummy has now gone to princess heaven where she can ride ponies of every colour.”

Korowa held lots of special memories for Sarah, helping her develop her love for organisational skills and creativity. She was an organiser who loved lists and projects.

After studying Arts and Commerce at the University of Melbourne, she qualified as a Chartered Accountant working at several leading multinationals. She found her calling working for Origin where she moved from finance roles to leadership in sustainability.

She was passionate about the environment and committed to supporting Origin achieve a range of sustainability targets.

The other side of Sarah was creative.

From sewing projects, to kid’s birthday extravaganzas, to interior design and fine arts. She always had projects on the go.

Being creative was her soul food. Her projects were bright, fun, spontaneous and often not finished. It was her place to let structure go and just be.

Sarah’s approach to everything she did during her life was done with courage and humility and always in the service of others.

Even when very unwell she once said: “I know the cancer is not my fault but I am sorry for it causing you pain.” She embodied the Korovian values.

Sarah is the younger sister of Lisa Warren (1988) and cousin of Kate Bocskay (nee Sellars)(1996).

FOUNDATION NEWS JESSIE PATRICK BEQUEST SOCIETY Named after Korowa’s first student, the Jessie Patrick Bequest Society provides an opportunity for the School to honour and thank those Korovians and friends who name the School as a beneficiary in their Will.

We acknowledge with gratitude, the recently received Margot Gibson Bequest, that has been directed to the Foundation’s Scholarship Fund.

Margot was a distinguished Korovian who had a lifetime interest in and involvement with the School.

Our Year 7 girls, in particular, have already found this digital resource invaluable as they worked on a STEAM History Makers project as part of their Technology and Enterprise curriculum. They researched an area of the School to create a prototype film clip to contribute to the creation of a Heritage Walk.

This will highlight the historical significance of our School site and its development over the years to inform our School community, our Korovians and our wider community and be ready next year as we celebrate the School’s 130th birthday.

In 2019 we completed a major project, digitising every School Magazine edition since it was first published in 1912. Initially named Korowa as a small booklet with a maroon cover it was renamed The Palm Leaf in June 1919 ….. “We hope that our readers will approve of the new title for our magazine. It is at least distinctive and as, in times gone by, the Palm Leaf was used as a symbol for victory, we thought it, in view of the bell-pealing and flag-waving times we are now passing through, distinctly appropriate”.
