Application for MOME I’ve made many designs for the application and I’ve made prototypes of most of them. I’ve designed a foldable trash bin for festivals, a carrier for plants, a picnic backpack that can be opened into a blanket and many others. The given task for the application was to design the ideal city for ourselves. My town was placed in a Skandinavian region with mountains and snow, where the main transport is cable cars. This way there is no traffic jam and there are less accidents. The floors of the homes can be turned at the staircase to follow the sun, so the sunshine can be enjoyed at 100% in the short time of the days.

Rube Goldberg Machine The first class of freshmen was called “Design Rafting”. The task was to make a working Rube Goldberg machine in two days, in mixed teams. We have built a coffe machine which was started by a coin. It boiled water, put instant coffee in a cup and then poured the hot water on top. In the end it made a signal when the coffee was ready. Our team placed first in the competition, and as a prize we could sign the golden boat pedal trophy.

Rolling salt dispenser
First semester design for personas Teams had to create personalities for design personas by their faces and objects. In 6 weeks each team had to come up with a collection that gives solves their persona’s problems. Our personas were a married couple in their 30s. Their different values created tension that we tried to help with a collection that makes their time together more liberated and playful. My object is a rolling salt dispenser. The two hemispheres are held together and positioned by magnets so the compartment can be opened and closed by turning one half. I learned a lot by this task, this was the first time when I used a lathe.

Dad-again
Bauhaus 100th anniversary The task was to design time measuring devices in the style of Bauhaus. My product was made for children with divorced parents. In my research I found that most of these children spend the weekdays at their mother’s, and the weekends at their father’s place. The product measures five days – the time from Monday to Friday – with the smaller figure reaching the larger figure on its spiral path. This way the child can follow the passage of time and see how much is left to see his father. After a week has passed, the small figure returns to it’s starting position along the path and restarts its course.

Calmly
2020 Toyota Logistic Design Competition I applied to the competition where luggage handling was the topic. I designed a container that is more user friendly: during the wait in the terminals the redesigned carrier can be extended so it’s almost twice as large, and our beloved ones can feel more comfortable. The extendable part of the container is transparent so the pets can have more connection to their surroundings. I chose calming colors for the body and made a flexible hole where we can reach the pet without opening the case. I believe that my concept is an appropriate solution to handle our pets as living things and to make their journey as bearable as possible. My design was chosen between the top 14 in the semi-finals and I made a redesign to fit in the Toyota brand more.

Fold to take
Sottsass inspired design for waiting Our task was to design a simple object for waiting in the style of Ettore Sottsass. I designed a drink coaster for pubs that has a function to show if a table is reserved. You can fold the top layer to show how much space you reserve at the table. It is easy to notice, cheap and simple. I used a pattern and a table from Sottsass for inspiration.

Workshop projects
Sculpting tools and Fretsaw Our first workshop project was to create two sculpting tools. We started with machines and finished with hand tools. We boiled the finished tools in linseed oil. In the second semester everyone created a fretsaw for themselves. We used the lathe for the handle and cut the small parts with handheld saws. We bent the frame from iron tubes and we brazed on nuts for the screws. The screws are the only parts which we didn’t make ourselves.

Clay and paper sculpting The first task was to make an organic form transform into a geometrical form in 10 to 20 steps. Then we made a GIF which shows the transformation. I chose to create an ear which turns into a globe. The second task was to create an animal head with geometrical shapes from paper. I chose an elephant, it was a great challenge to make the trunk movable mut I could solve it in the end.
