“A Taste of Koresh” In the Middle East, Mezze means a taste, a flavor, a selection of small dishes to share and relish.

In this platter of short repertory works, Israeli Artistic Director Roni Koresh choreographs like he eats, offering audiences a sampling of distinct dishes from the sweet to the savory.

Here, the signature Koresh blend of Graham technique, Luigi jazz, ballet, hip hop, and Israeli folk movement is deconstructed into a meal of many styles, tastes, and emotions. With a bitter tang of human weakness, a dash of salty strength, and hints of nutty humor, Mezze is sure to please the palate.

“Are we not the same?”

Roni Koresh’s evening-length work evolution premiered in 2009 and has been reimagined for a new cast in 2014. Gritty and timeless, the piece explores dance as an eternal language that predates spoken language: as a visceral, universal form of physical expression.

Earthy and rhythmic, evolution begins with the clawing and clambering of passionate bodies under dim, prehistoric light. Dancers in open suit jackets grow firm and angular, developing social codes and civilized distance with their bouncing feet and angled elbows.

In the end, Koresh’s intense and intricate choreography demands whether human nature has changed, or whether our need for communication remains essential and powerful across time.

Touring Program 2016-17

Koresh Dance Company’s artistic endeavors have grown and blossomed over the 23 years since Artistic Director Ronen Koresh founded the company in 1991. In 2014, KDC purchased a 4-studio home in the center of Philadelphia. With national and international touring engagements to over 20 destinations every year, a successful, independently produced dance festival, and two Philadelphia home seasons annually, Koresh brings audiences to their feet and keeps the dance community on its toes.

25th Anniversary Collaboration

For Koresh Dance Company’s 25th year, Koresh will unveil several new partnerships, including a collaboration with experimental musician DJ Spooky, aka Paul Miller, to produce 23: Deconstructing Mozart. In this twist on the classical, Miller disarticulates and rebuilds portions of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23, while Koresh combines the industrial and the lyrical to produce a potent remix of his precise, athletic style.

DJ Spooky aka Paul D. Miller is the executive editor of ORIGIN Magazine and is a composer, multimedia artist, editor and author. His DJ MIXER iPad app has seen more than 12 million downloads in the last year. In 2012-2013 he is the first artistin-residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC starting this fall. He's produced and composed work for Yoko Ono, Thurston Moore, and scores of artists and award-winning films. Miller's work as a media artist has appeared in the Whitney Biennial; The Venice Biennial for Architecture, the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, Germany; Kunsthalle, Vienna; The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and many other museums and galleries. His book Sound Unbound, an anthology of writings on electronic music and digital media is a best-selling title for MIT Press. He has been featured everywhere from Elle to CNN to SyFy. Miller's deep interest in reggae and dub has resulted in a series of compilations, remixes and collections of material from the vaults of the legendary Jamaican label, Trojan Records.
