"Once a new technology rolls over you, if you're not part of the steamroller, you're part of the road." Stewart Brand, Writer Many firms view technology as the Holy Grail as the answer to all issues. It is unquestionably true that technology helps some companies produce outstanding results. But the primary users of the technology are the Managers of any business firm. If the managers could understand and learn the technology well, they can use it to its extreme benefit, else surviving in the business environment is very tough.

Technological advancements help managers in many possible ways. Let's reveal the importance of technological advances in different organizational departments.

Financial department/ Organization Traditionally, managers used to maintain the records in the form of books, and eventually, they started updating to the technologies and using MS Excel for basic calculations. In this decade, with the help of the ERP system, with FI & CO modules (Finance Module and Control Modules), financial managers can quickly enter financial transactions and easily prepare built-in and ad-hoc reports. CO module of the ERP system will take care of all economic conditions, credit checks, etc., without human intervention. With the latest version of Tally, financial managers and accountants in business organizations post the transactions in appropriate accounts and get all the

financial statements without difficulty. With advanced Apps, even investment in different funds and bands become very easy.

Human resource department In most organizations, human resource (HR) departments use technological advancements more skilfully. The HR department uses biometric sensors and Face recognition to capture employee attendance. With advanced software, the HR department automates many crucial activities like monthly pay bill generation, sending the details to the bank, transmitting the details to the Income tax department, automatic tax deduction and payment to the Income Tax department, Employee PF deduction, and payment, etc. without much human involvement. Apart from that, the HR department uses AI to recruit new employees with expected talents and skills.

Operations Department Operations/Production department uses technology to start with demand forecasting till the delivery of Goods with optimized logistics with lesser operational time and minimal cost. Using technology in business operations enables you to provide the safest environments for the employees. Human mistakes cause several industrial accidents and problems with quality control.

The technology uses practicalities rather than emotions to make decisions and solve problems.

Technology operations can offer numerous chances for corporate innovation. Using technology to automate tedious activities will give your staff more time to think of original ideas and interact with customers. Social media is a fantastic technology tool for promoting best practices in corporate innovation. Businesses can utilize business analytics to see where they can enhance their services or products based on input from customers and clients. There are numerous locations across a supply chain where employees squander time on activities easily automatable by computers.

Project and supply chain management can reduce business labour expenses while freeing up fulltime employees' time. Also, the effect of technology can enhance problem-solving and decisionmaking. Employees may concentrate on business innovation and growing clientele when not forced to perform tedious, repetitive jobs. It also creates ample opportunities for employees who are in need.

Sales & Marketing Technology has helped the sales & marketing department professionals, especially in advertising and promotions. Technology makes sales executives/ marketing professionals quickly identify and approach the target audience. Approaching target customers directly (without mass communication) will increase the number of positive pitches with less cost and time. appropriate consumers is easy. This will lead to huge sales and more profit with less time and advertisement costs.

Advanced data analytics using recent programming languages like R and Python is also crucial.

Programming skills are also needed to make ad-hoc and in-need reports and data preparation before analysing data. By utilizing advanced data analysis techniques, many businesses can get insight into the numerous facets of consumer behaviour. Companies offer these solutions that evaluate data from repositories that are structured (information traditionally stored in orderly databases) and unstructured (information generated via emails and social media platforms like Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and others).

So Managers need to be prepared for emerging technologies and their uses. With preparedness, sustaining the position and growth in the future business world will be easier.

What is Kanban?

Kanban is a just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing inventory control technique. Toyota industrial engineer Taiichi Ohno introduces this technique. It gets its name from the colourful cards used to track production and place orders for fresh deliveries of components or materials as they get depleted. The Kanban system uses visual cues to prompt the action required to keep a process moving. Kanban is a Japanese word that means a "visual card" where one can visualize.

Understanding the Kanban system One way to conceptualize the Kanban system is as a signal and response system. A visible indication will indicate how much quantity to order from the supplier when an item runs short at an operational station. The user orders the amount specified by Kanban, and the provider fulfils the charge exactly as asked.

For instance, a Kanban could be positioned in the stack above the final ten bags of a product being bagged by a worker on a conveyor belt. The worker hands the floor runner the card to carry additional bags when he reaches the card. The Kanban may be positioned at 15 packs at a station farther from the supply room and five loads at a station closer to it. Adjustments are made to the flow of bags and the positioning of cards to ensure that no station goes without a backpack while the belt is running. The Kanban system is simple to use in a factory but may also be used to buy merchandise from outside vendors. Very high visibility is produced by the Kanban system for suppliers and customers. One of its principal goals is limiting excess inventory to any extent on the production line. Whenever a stock is exceeded, it will address the inefficiency that must be rectified.

Kanban Core practices • Visualize workflows: Kanban's core requirement is that the process be represented visually. The procedure must be demonstrated step-by-step using visual clues that make each task identifiable, whether using actual, tangible cards or via technology and software. The goal is to make it obvious what each stage entails, what is expected, and who will be responsible for what. Old-fashioned techniques included writing Kanban chores on sticky notes, which are still used today. Different colours could be used on each sticky note to represent various categories of work things. To make the project more organized, these jobs would be arranged into swim lanes, clearly defined sections that group related work. The Kanban process is often driven by inventory management software.

• Limit work in progress: Kanban strives to reduce the quantity of work in progress because it is based on efficiency. Before starting a new task, teams are encouraged to finish the one they have already started. This makes it possible to begin future dependencies earlier and prevents resources, like staff, from inefficiently waiting to start their duty while relying on others. While using the Kanban method, a business must determine how much Work In Progress inventory is suitable. This is frequently related to how many people are involved at each stage of the process; as the number of workers assigned to a project declines, so does the permitted volume of things being worked on. This restriction likewise informs other teams or departments that they must be considerate of other teams' requests, as each group of people may be subject to an operational constraint.

• Manage workflows: A business can spot strengths and shortcomings when a process is carried out along the workflow.

Sometimes, restrictions are not followed, or objectives are not completed; in these situations, it is up to the team to control the workflow and better comprehend the shortcomings that must be fixed.

A key component of Kanban is to spot bottlenecks early on and remove them. Forecasting production and resource use is part of this. A business will discover that when a process gets more predictable, it is simpler to commit to consumers or increase process efficiency by ultimately scaling back unnecessary resources.

• Define Policies:

Processes are frequently well-defined when workflows are visually represented. The expectations imposed on teams by departments are often simple to comprehend, and Kanban cards allocated to specific people make it easy to determine who is responsible for each task. Employees will know what is expected of them, what checklist requirements must be satisfied before completion, and what happens during the transition between steps if policies are well defined.

• Implement Feedback Loops: By utilizing the Kanban approach, businesses frequently gather data, assess how the process operates, and implement modifications to enhance the process further. Employees may continuously improve thanks to this feedback loop and make gradual, manageable changes that are simpler to adopt. Feedback could be either favourable or unfavourable. The Kanban technique aims to identify failures early in the process and experience them immediately. This enables the business to change its course before the inefficiencies cause more severe problems.

• Improving collaborations: People often have to rely on one another while utilizing the Kanban method because tasks are divided into small Kanban cards. People on separate teams must frequently cooperate and debate changes in swim lanes, while others must band together to identify and address problems rapidly.

Changes to the process under Kanban must be widely conveyed because modifications made in one area may significantly impact another.

Electronic Kanban system Electronic Kanban systems are widely used to facilitate real-time demand signalling across the supply chain. Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems can incorporate these e-Kanban systems.

These systems use digital Kanban boards, lists, and cards to share process status information between departments. Several manufacturers, including Toyota, Ford Motor Company, and Bombardier Aerospace, employ e-Kanban systems. Even while these electronic systems can automate specific processes, such as moving objects through a plant or filling out purchase orders, they still offer visual indications.

The Use of Kanban in the practical World Kanban aims to save businesses time, money, and other resources by minimizing downtime between activities. Kanban also seeks to address bottlenecks before they arise, enabling proactive action rather than having work in progress wait impassively while issues are resolved.

Kanban Board The Kanban process uses Kanban boards, which are organizational frameworks that explicitly define a process's constituent parts. Boards, lists, and cards are the three standard components of a Kanban board. Kanban boards represent the complete workflow organization process in its entirety.

For instance, a business might choose different Kanban boards for its organizational departments, like finance, marketing, etc. Using the Kanban board allows for the consolidation of appropriate procedures into a single workspace. The tasks inside each board are listed on Kanban boards.

Because Kanban lists frequently represent many stages of production within a single industry, a manufacturer might, for instance, have a list item for each manufacturing stage. The flow of activities will be in a sequence. Once the task is completed, the other task will be piled up without delay.

Lastly, Kanban cards exist within lists and stand in for the most minute, specific actions required to finish the list. To complete the list, one must address the specific items on these cards in the correct order. As an illustration, a producer must contact the supplier, confirm raw material availability, place the order, get the inventory items, and commence production. Further refinement of these phases can produce more precise Kanban cards for mini-projects.

The bottom line in the Kanban technique: A system known as the Kanban approach seeks to reduce waste, downtime, inefficiencies, and bottlenecks throughout a process. Boards, lists, and cards that display several departments' duties are used to represent projects visually. Kanban can save manufacturing costs, use personnel better, enhance customer service, and shorten delivery times when used correctly.

Linear programming in Operations Management

Linear programming is a mathematical technique that helps managers to optimize decisions based on specific constraints and variables. This technique can be used in operations so managers can perform effectively and efficiently. In this mathematical approach, there are two crucial objectives, namely, the objective function and the second one is restraint function. These two functions are interconnected as one function's output is used as another function's input. The restraint function generates constraints, whereas the objective function uses variables to solve these constraints.

Nonlinear programming A nonlinear programming (NLP) method solves issues with nonlinear constraints and goals. You can use NLP to determine the optimum solution, for instance, to reduce the distance between a group of points and a curve or locate the ideal shape of a construction. Different approaches, including the gradient, Newton, and penalty methods, can be used to tackle NLP problems.

Numerous other disciplines, including machine learning, statistics, physics, and biology, also employ NLP. To speed up the business processes in any organization, managers use this mathematical application and perform tasks. For instance, considering the manufacturing industry, this application is used to arrange the existing resources according to the standards of the desired optimization level.

Managers use linear programming to determine the break-even workload, yielding maximum profitability. Firms transform raw materials into finished goods and intend to generate maximum revenue. as possible. This linear programming allows the managers to manufacture the goods in a précised quantity. Regarding constraints, it is essential to consider the time spent on manufacturing each product. If the manager identifies any bottlenecks in the manufacturing process, they should be identified and removed immediately.

The history behind linear programming In 1939, soviet mathematician and economist Leonid Kantorovich developed a general linear programming model. This technique was implemented in World War 2 to plan expenditures and returns to minimize military costs and enhance losses imposed on the enemy. Frank Lauren Hitchcock developed the transportation problem as linear programs and provided solutions like the simplex method. From 1946 to 1947, George B. Dantzig designed linear programming to implement planning problems in the US Air Force. Dantzig's original example aimed to determine how to distribute 70 persons among 70 positions optimally. The number of alternative configurations surpasses the number of particles in the observable universe. Therefore, it takes significant processing power to test all the permutations and choose the optimum assignment.

However, by framing the issue as a linear program and using the simplex technique, the best answer can be found in seconds. The number of potential solutions that must be examined is significantly reduced by the theory underlying linear programming.

Types of linear programming problems In business, various problems can be solved using linear programming. I want to describe the most used linear issues in this article.

Manufacturing problem: As the name suggests, manufacturing firms use it. By using this technique, firms try to maximize the profit and eventually minimize the cost by taking the constraints such as labour, output, machine runtime, and other related factors.

Diet Problem: this problem optimizes the adequate nutrients required for the body by utilizing them cost-efficiently.

Transportation problem: linear programming is also used to find the best possible routes with the lowest cost.

Resource allocation problem: this is concerned with the efficiency of the projects that the managers take. The manager's main objective is to complete the maximum tasks using optimum resources, assigning the right jobs to the right employees, and getting the best output.

Proficiency of Dam System: linear programming is also helped to determine water variations that generate power to maximize the energy from the entire system.

Agricultural Applications: These applications deal with choosing an air weapon system to take out gorillas while consuming the least amount of aviation fuel possible.

Physical distribution: in physical distribution, linear programming is used to identify the cost– effective to locate warehouses, distribution centres, and industrial plants.

Challenges with the linear programming Every mathematical technique has pros and cons, as linear programming does. The main challenge of the linear program is that it assumes that the constraints and objectives are linear, which only applies to some scenarios. Few such cases are economies of scale, exponential growth, and diminishing returns. These are nonlinear. Hence linear programming doesn't seem applicable in these scenarios. Another challenge associated with linear programming is that it is expensive and difficult to solve if the problem has many constraints.

Challenges to overcome the linear programming Utilizing models and techniques suitable for the topic will help overcome the difficulties associated with LP and NLP. If the issue contains nonlinear characteristics, for instance, you can try to convert it into a linear or convex form, or you can apply a nonlinear method that can manage them. If the issue involves multiple optima, you can use a local optimization approach with an effective heuristic or a randomization strategy or a global optimization method that can search the whole search space. Using software tools and packages that can effectively and consistently tackle the problems presented by LP and NLP is another way to overcome these obstacles. For instance, use MATLAB, Excel, Python, or R to create and resolve LP.
