There are moments in life you can’t control and when they happen you can feel lost. Lost as in unbalanced. The moment that happened to me was the passing of my aunt in October 2021. The impact was something I never experienced before. This resulted in me cutting myself off from my loved ones. As a consequence, there was getting some friction with the people around me. Actions have consequences, some you maybe can’t predict. Finding a way to translate the experience in an art piece was the result of dealing with hard moments in life. As an artist/designer I am looking to relatable moments in my life that I can translate so others can experience these moments. Not like the way I did but let them open for their own interpretation.

What do you think when you hear this phrase: “I am losing my balance.” Balance is a human topic, there are multiple ways to answer this question. Balance has more than one meaning, balance in nature or balance in life. Using these two variations of balance to combine and create a translation of a personal experience.
An experience that made Koos aware that our actions can influence or even have consequences for our surroundings. Therefore, Koos started research to the meaning of balance within life and nature. The translation came within a physics-based system that is a combination of these two variations.
The installation is suggesting how small actions can create consequences that one can’t realize. The way one interacts with the installation how someone experiences the installation. The system is open and organized, changing and fragile.

What is balance? This Was the first question to answer. How do you create the best translation of balance in life? Balance is open and organized, as well as changing and fragile. Seeking these aspects within a system to start the process towards translating balance. This resulted in a physics-based system that is open, organized and fragile. First tests with the system. Finding out what the system can bring.
- G E T T I N G - C O N T R O L Balance is a changing force within. Losing balance can feel like a marble that rolls towards the end of the table or a towel that almost slides off. To get back in control you sometimes need to let go. The system provides a translation of this aspect of balance, by using the natural forces to get a tension change within the, line if one lift the weight. Suggesting one need to use your own weight to come down and stop in time. Tests of getting control of the system. How can this interaction create an effect of influence?

-CONSEQUENTIAL-INTERACTIONConsequences are a part of life. Choices and actions can create a moment you never expected. Influencing your surroundings with your own interaction by implementing light that is creating a contrast within the environment. One small interaction that let you come down, to get back up. Tests of how to implement light to combine the interaction with a change in the room.

Sometimes it can feel hard to get back up after losing balance. Investing in yourselves is part of life and is translated in the installation by implementing a second interaction. The interaction in another moving part within the work to get one curious about what will happen. The object that provides the movement is a mechanical system. This system is designed with a gear transition because this is a stronger and reliable way of transferring forces. Combining all the aspects into a big installation to let one become aware of their actions.

Translating a personal experience brings a lot of ideas, Losing My Balance is a start of a project that has a lot of potential. The way the system can be scaled offers options to create bigger pieces for public areas, museums, entrances. But the piece is a translation of a personal experience that can relate to others so when the work is smaller, people can have a personal connection with the piece to enjoy it within their homes.
The system is a start for other variations and collaborations. Combining other materials, effects and extremer ways one can experience balance. As a designer I am always looking for new ways to let one interact. The interaction can trigger curiosity which is connected to eureka moments. These moments of discovery are the most fascinating of designing interactive work. Letting one become part of the installation to let them experience what they experience.
We all see the same, but we experience something different.
