Our Recommendations – FOR YOUR WInE, DInE & GOLF ExPERIEnCES

There are just so many wonderful wine and golf regions in Australia, but two of our favorites are the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria and the Hunter Valley in New South Wales. Both areas present a seductive lifestyle confluence of food, wine and spas with the added benefit of some of the finest golf in a country that has over 1,500 courses. morninGton PeninsulA Mornington Peninsula is about an hours drive from Melbourne and this compact area is much appreciated and visited by discerning local and international travellers. it is renowned for its cool-climate wines and fantastic winery restaurants. Almost half of the some 200 vineyards are in pinot noir but because of the wide variety of terroir, the area is also home to pinot gris, chardonnay, shiraz, riesling, tempranillo and barbera. Wine the small area of redhill has some of the best wineries, many with their own restaurants; Paringa estate (producing perhaps the best Pinot noir in Australia), red Hill estate, ten Minutes by tractor and Port Phillip estate – all open daily. Most winery cellar doors are open weekends and those open daily include Crittenden, Main ridge, eldridge, Merrick, Montalto, stonier, the Cups, Darling Park and Willow Creek. there are a number of showcase weekends and festivals held throughout the year. Dine ten Minutes by tractor – tractor restaurant & Wine Bar – One of only six Victorian regional one star restaurants, Australia Gourmet traveller said “a wide ranging wine list, combining their own output with benchmark wines of the world, is part of the attraction as is efficient service. But it is stuart Bell’s cooking that really draws the crowd... and makes this a great place, in a gorgeous setting.”

Austr AliA

Wine, Dine & GOlf

Paringa estate restaurant – small and intimate with beautiful views, chef steffen Jensen produces classic french food such as the signature roquefort soufflé. you will just love this food paired with some truly great wine. Port Phillip estate – An architectural masterpiece made of limestone rammed-earth. Mediterranean inspired food from simon West showcases seafood and truly great coffee. Hot tip: Have a casual lunch at t’Gallant Winemakers. their thin crust pizza’s are mouth watering. Golf the rugged coastal area of the peninsula provides perfect conditions for the 13 golf courses located here. Moonah links – Consists of two world class layouts; the Open (rated #26) and the legends (rated #13). Moonah hosts the Australian Open every third year and includes an integrated Peppers resort hotel complex. the Dunes Golf links – set on 300 acres of gently rolling hills and dunes, this 27-hole course is Australia’s premier public access course and rated at #27. Portsea Golf Club – A superb course rated at #38 in Australia.

hunter vAlleY Hunter Valley is about two hours drive north west of sydney and is the weekend playground for sydneysiders (much as the napa Valley is to san franciscans). the 120 wineries produce a wide variety of grapes but are most well known for semillon and shiraz. international stars feature in vineyard concerts throughout the summer and tyrrells host the popular Jazz in the Vines every October. Wine the Pokolbin area has many of the wineries that have been around for generations – tulloch, Drayton, tyrrells, McGuigan and lindemans. We also like the smaller personable wineries such as Margan, Petersons family Wines, tamburlaine and saddlers Creek. Most are open daily and many have restaurants or cafés serving meals using local produce. Dine Margan restaurant at Broke – the impressive sandstone building complements the Mediterranean inspired cuisine. A bonus while dining is the cellar door prices for wine – $18 a bottle for their impressive estate semillon. lazzarini’s – A great atmosphere and tuscan food make this an outstanding fine dining experience. Mojo’s on Wilderness – located in the lovedale area, this friendly secluded restaurant serves generous portions of very good food.

rock restaurant – Very contemporary and probably the trendiest place to dine in the Hunter Valley. the degustation menu is memorable.

17

Hot tip: Do not miss the Hunter Olive Centre on McDonald road! A showcase of 400 locally made gourmet food products including jams, preserves, olives, oils, chutneys and dukkah – most available to taste. And for food with a difference try Oishi at tempus two – authentic and delicious Japanese and thai cuisine. the best coffee in the valley can be had at Bliss Coffee roasters, Hunter Valley Gardens Village. Golf there are four courses in the Pokolbin area and as the locals say “play the greens and taste the reds.” Cypress lakes Golf Club – With inspiring views over the valley and designed by American steve smyers in 1992, the first nine inland link holes meander through the vineyards, while the back nine parkland holes present a greater challenge. there are over 60 bunkers but it is quite forgiving to play and has Australia’s longest par 5, the 16th at 660 yards. the Vintage Golf Club – Greg norman designed and current home of the new south Wales Masters tournament. it is rated #44 in Australia, while the new luxury 5-star resort, Chateau elan lies within the precinct. note: All golf course rankings, courtesy of 2010 Australian Golf Digest.

the Ghan is a living legend in Australian history. Originally the Afghan express, the name ‘the Ghan’ was inspired by the pioneering Afghan cameleers who blazed a permanent trail into the red Centre of Australia over 150 years ago. When the Ghan first departed Adelaide for Alice springs in 1929, it was always intended that it would one day travel through to Darwin. More than 70 years on, in 2004, that dream became a reality. Boarding the Ghan in Adelaide or Darwin, you’ll experience one of the most fascinating great train journeys of the world. Marvel at the spectacular Australian landscapes; from the rusty reds of the MacDonnell ranges surrounding a town called Alice, gateway to Ayers rock and the red Centre, then north to tennant Creek, Katherine and the tropical splendor of Darwin. Guests can choose to travel in Platinum service, Gold service or red service. Platinum service is a new luxury level of train travel, like no other Australian train accommodation. Platinum Cabins are approximately twice the size of the standard Gold twin Cabins with each room offering deluxe accommodation including double beds, spacious ensuite and 24-hour room service. they have all the modern comforts, in a classic style, with a distinct Australian character. Or, for the ultimate great train experience aboard the Ghan, travel in one of our stylish, self contained private carriages. there are four private carriages available; the historic Prince of Wales or Governors lounge Carriages, the modern sir John forrest Carriage, or the pride of Great southern rail’s fleet, the Chairman’s Carriage. the Ghan operates a twice weekly return service between Adelaide and Darwin in the high-season and a once weekly return service in the low season.

Celebrating 10 years of expedition cruising, the Great escape Charter Company is one of the original, luxury operators exploring two of the most isolated yet truly awesome destinations in Australia: the Kimberley Coast and the rowley shoals. referred to as a once in a lifetime escape, and with a variety of cruise and dive itineraries, guests experience firsthand this extraordinary wilderness; the towering gorges, thunderous waterfalls, ancient rock art, and fishing for prized barramundi. the six-person crew will guide you through the nature-based adventures and there are few who know its seductive secrets like Captain Chris tucker. Having explored the region for over 20 years, his extensive knowledge is legendary for accessing the coastal treasures and secret fishing holes. the on-board chef complements the cruise experience with contemporary Australian cuisine of fresh ingredients sourced from the region and even caught by the guests. the underwater jewel of the region is the rowley shoals. As one of Australia’s largely-unknown dive sites, the rowley shoals never ceases to amaze even the most experienced divers and snorkelers as they explore these three atolls in crystal tropical waters amongst coral gardens, giant clams, potato cod, and shy hammerheads. Custom-built and equipped with three excursion tenders, MV Great escape offers a privileged 14 guests the opportunity to cruise the Kimberley in unparalleled stability and air-conditioned luxury. the small groups and vessel design lend itself perfectly to exclusive charters and experiences. MV Great escape features queen staterooms with ensuites, a foredeck spa, on-board helicopter, wireless internet, and sprawling back deck that allows guests to explore this remote area in personalized luxury.
