“Consider yourself - one of us!”
Participating in the production of "Oliver!" has been a transformative journey for our cast and crew, teaching invaluable life skills that extend beyond the stage. Creativity flourished as they delved into the rich characters and dynamic scenes, pushing their imaginations to new heights. Whether it was through getting unique costumes, acting scenes or perfecting vocal performances, every element required a spark of innovation and artistic flair
Time management emerged as a crucial skill as they balanced rehearsals, school, and personal commitments. The dedication and discipline shown by each member of the team was remarkable, ensuring that every aspect of the production came together seamlessly. The ability to prioritise and manage time effectively will undoubtedly serve them well in all future endeavours.
Teamwork was at the heart of their success. From the lead actors to the backstage crew, every role was integral, and they learned to rely on and support one another. The camaraderie built through countless hours of collaboration fostered a sense of unity and mutual respect, reminding them that great achievements are rarely accomplished alone.
They also learned that mistakes are part of the process. Every missed line or misplaced prop taught them resilience and adaptability. These moments of imperfection were opportunities for growth, encouraging them to embrace challenges and learn from them.
As the final curtain falls, we hope the memories and lessons from "Oliver!" will remain with the cast forever. This experience has been more than a performance; it has been a journey of personal growth and unforgettable friendships. We are so proud of you all!
Many thanks to all of you for coming tonight and celebrating the talents of the youngsters in our Secondary School. These amazing young students have taken on a challenging and mature work, showing an ability to play complex and iconic characters with great aplomb. They have worked at lunchtimes, after school and have given many hours to rehearsing moves and learning lines.
It has been a delight to see them all grow in confidence and I know like me, you will be hugely entertained by all of their efforts I want to also thank the amazing colleagues I work with who have helped build the set, designed props and costume or marketed the show. They have gone the extra mile to make this show a success.
So now, settle in and let us take you back to the 1840s, to the grimy, dirty streets of London and to where poor children had to fend for themselves and where the system did almost nothing to help them So relax, laugh cheer and cry as we take you on Oliver's roller coaster ride through Victorian London. It will all be over in two hours but fear not for we will Be Back Soon.
Oliver! is a stage musical based upon the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist, published in 1838. It tells the story of a young, orphan named Oliver who lives in Victorian England.
“Please sir, I want some more.”
The play begins in the workhouse, where the poorest people of Victorian society lived and worked. Life in the workhouses was incredibly bleak, with long working hours, very little food and unsanitary living conditions. Oliver manages to escape the workhouse and meets a group of petty thieves and pickpockets, led by the charismatic Fagin. Oliver is both intrigued and frightened by this new world of petty crime.
“You’ve got to pick a pocket or two.”
Meanwhile, a kind-hearted bookshop owner, Mr Brownlow, takes an interest in Oliver and offers him a chance at a better life. This brief moment of happiness is interrupted by a young woman named Nancy, who is associated with Fagin and his gang, as she becomes concerned with Oliver’s safety. Nancy tries to help Oliver, despite the disapproval of her abusive partner, Bill Sikes.
“I’d do anything for your dear - anything.”
As Oliver learns more about his past and tries to escape the clutches of Fagin and Sikes, he faces danger and uncertainty. Ultimately, Oliver’s innocence and goodness prevail, leading to a dramatic climax where secrets are revealed, loyalties are tested, and justice is served.
