Medicine/Physiology WHO? Yoshinori Ohsumi (Japan)

WHAT FOR? Discovered the mechanisms of autophagy in cells. He worked out what genes, proteins and steps are taken to break down and recycle old cell components first in yeast cells then in human cells. Here’s how he discovered it to work: WHY IS THEIR WORK IMPORTANT? 4 // KT-What?

Problems associated with these mechanisms not working include cancer, Parkinson’s disease, type 2 diabetes and aging. Yoshinori’s work is now being used as the basis for finding new medicine.

Chemistry WHO?

Aug/Sept 2016

Jean-Pierre Sauvage (France), Sir J. Fraser Stoddart (USA) and Bernard L. Feringa (Netherlands) WHAT FOR? Designing and producing molecular machines – super tiny motors! 1. Sauvage managed to make chain of linked molecular rings called a Catenane. This type of bond was called a mechanical bond 2. Stoddart put a molecular ring on a thin molecular axel (basically a ring on a stick) so that it could rotate and move up and down – a Rotaxane 3. Feringa turned all this into a molecular motor WHY IS THEIR WORK IMPORTANT? It is thought that many practical uses will develop from this machinery including new materials, sensors and energy stores.

Physics

WHO? David J. Thouless (USA), F. Duncan M. Haldane (USA), J. Michael Kosterlitz (USA)

WHAT FOR? Studies of strange states of matter using topology (an advanced type of maths) – beyond the typical solid/ liquid/gas! In the 1970s Kosterlitz and Thouless proved that superconductors could be in extremely thin layers and looked at how different temperatures and phase transitions affect conductivity. In the 1980s, Haldane used similar concepts to understand how chains of tiny magnets worked. WHY IS THEIR WORK IMPORTANT? Their work has sparked an increase in research into matter physics, with the aim of someday using all these materials in very tiny electronics and quantum computers.

Economics

WHO? Oliver Hart (USA) and Bengt Hölstrom (USA) WHAT FOR? The development of contract theory. Hölstrom, in KT-What?! // 5

the 1970s, came up with an informativeness principle to analyze how a contract maker can optimize the incentives and risks for themselves and agent with whom the contract is made. Then in 1980, Hart worked on a new branch – incomplete contracts and with whom the decision on unanswered conditions in differentscenarios lie. WHY IS THEIR WORK IMPORTANT? Research in this field has since bloomed, including exploration of the theory’s application in fields such as politics and law.

WHO? Bob Dylan (USA)

incorporating an array of political, social, philosophical and literary inspirations in his lyrics. He has been described as "master poet, caustic social critic and intrepid, guiding spirit of the counterculture generation".

WHAT FOR? "For having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition". Bob Dylan has had an immense influence on popular music and culture. From folk music, to blues to rock & roll, he crossed typical genre boundaries,

WHY IS THEIR WORK IMPORTANT? The decision to award the Nobel Prize to a popular musician challenged the typical interpretation of literature of being limited to poetry and novels, to appreciate the artistic value of song lyrics too.

Peace

WHO? President Juan Manuel Santos (Columbia) WHAT FOR? Efforts to try bring Columbia’s 50-year civil war to an end. He negotiated the peace treaty with FARC geurillas that brought fighting to a stop. WHY IS THEIR WORK IMPORTANT? 220,000 have been killed and a further 6 million have been displaced as a result of the civil war. In unfortunate turn of events, the treaty was rejected in a national referendum due their dislike of controversial terms – many said it was not harsh enough and the Farc were not receiving due punishment. However, the Nobel Prize committee chose to award

the prize to President Santos nonetheless because he has brought Colombia closer to peace despite the no vote, to encourage hope and further peace talks, and to pay tribute to victims. President Santos continues to push for peace. * (Country) indicates where they carried out their Nobel-Prize-winning work MLA style: "Nobel Prizes 2016". Nobelprize.org. Nobel Media AB 2014. DYING EARTH “We have a single mission : to protect and hand on the planet to the next generation.” Francois Hollande President of France BY VIKI, U6

L

et’s take a moment to realise how much we are killing this planet from within. While these three incidents are scary, they tell us how obviously our actions are killing this planet.

1. Extinction of the Passenger Pigeon. In the 19th Century, Passenger Pigeons, Ectopistes migratorius, were the most abundant bird in North America and possibly the world. In 1914, 8 // KT-What?

the last of its kind, Martha a female passenger pigeon, passed away. During the late 19th century, hunting down passenger pigeons was so

Aug/Sept 2016

vigorous that a few years later their number had reduced tenfold. It was too late when we realised the effects of our actions.

2. The evidence for Climate Change. Climate change is something that occurs naturally in this world of ours but we as humans have sped up the process of climate change. The last known major climate change was 7000 years ago; the ice age. Imagine going through an ice age or drought all year. When every second we increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the air, we reduce our capability to live on Earth.

What evidence do we have to suggest climate change? Different experiments and studies have concluded that the following situations are happening as a result of climate change: a. Sea level rise - global sea level has risen about 17 centimetres in the last century. b. Global temperature rise. c. Warming oceans. d. Shrinking ice sheets. e. Declining arctic sea ice KT-What?! // 9

f. Glacial retreat g. Extreme weather conditions, such as heavy rainfall. h. Ocean acidification i. Decreased snow cover.

3. The Great Barrier Reef If you are keeping up with the news, you might have heard that the Great Barrier Reef is facing severe damage due to climate change. In fact, coral reefs all around the world are being threatened. The death of corals is mostly due to the increase in temperature and acidity of the 10 // KT-What?

ocean. The illustration below shows how coral reefs are affected by the increase in carbon dioxide emissions. At the end of the day, these major events are closely related to us. We don’t have to think big to achieve change. If people in the 19th Century had stopped hunting passenger pigeons, we would be able to enjoy their presence now. It has to start from each and every one of us. We have to learn to be sustainable. Simple things like switching off lights and fans, reducing food wastage and reducing

Schools from all around KL and Seremban participated in the event, making it a very fun and memorable day with friendships that’ll last forever. Besides being extremely exhausting and hot, the games lasted for a good 12 // KT-What?

three to four hours. Spectators from KTJ cheered on their friends as they maneuvered and passed the ball around the pitch. It was Mr. Disney, in my opinion, who gave the most support for the girls. Once the final whistle was blown, the prize-giving ceremony was held at the main field. The U18 Boys A team won the Champions title, earning them a beautiful gold. The U18 Boys B team, however, were unfortunate to not

A DOCTOR STRANGE REVIEW BY ISABELLE TAN, U6 “What if I told you that reality is one of many?”

L

ittered with kaleidoscopic fractals and an infinity of geometric shapes, the visual design in Doctor Strange is truly a work of art, and the best part of the movie. It’s easy to see the cues and tricks that the film has pulled from other similarly psychedelic films, the most prominent exam ple here being Inception. The facades of buildings turn and twist like giant 14 // KT-What?

Rubik’s cubes of architecture; cityscapes are unraveled and woven into MC Escher-style battlefields; sorcerers shift between dimensions and bend space and time to their bidding. Reality itself shatters and crumbles and reforms endlessly, malleable as clay and making you feel like you’re watching a really intense acid trip. This is the most gorgeous Marvel movie by far, and especially in terms

Aug/Sept 2016

of special effects - never before has a superhero film so spectacularly used CGI and state-of-the-art technology to its fullest, and so demanded for you to watch in 3D. ‘Awe-inspiring’ doesn’t do justice to this blockbuster’s reality-bending and mind-blowing set pieces; ‘jaw-dropping’ is a better description. Benedict Cumberbatch plays reluctant protagonist Stephen Strange - a neurosurgeon whose pride lands him with ruined hands and desperation, driven by his pride and burning curiosity and often too wrapped up in his own ego. Cumberbatch is to Stephen Strange as Robert Downey Jr. is to Tony Stark - the character inseparable from the actor, face and voice and demeanour all interwoven till you can barely distinguish the actor from the character. Even their arrogance and

opulent lifestyles mirror each other - but the difference here is while Iron Man builds a world around Tony Stark and his snarky star persona, Doctor Strange uses their hero to poke fun and inject some levity into the mystical world he finds himself in. It’s a smart move and a trait well-appreciated, with how far detached the film becomes from reality and how deep into its own head it seems to get. There is an awful lot of spiritual and mystical mumbo-jumbo that gets thrown around in the story, and while the endless exposition in the film is condensed and simplified for the casual viewer in geek-friendly terms, there’s still a staggering amount of mythological density lurking underneath. It’s understandable - this is the first Marvel movie to explore its universe’s magical side, and there’s a lot that has to be KT-What?! // 15

told and established first, so other movies can follow after. But even so, with all of the mystical and magical parts stripped from the movie, the story itself is essentially a simple Hero’s Journey - just with more visual flair than most. Sadly, the rest of the characters get little depth to their personalities and are given very little to do, despite the star-studded cast of actors assembled. Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Mordo, a teacher and sidekick to Strange, whose his acting chops are 16 // KT-What?

woefully underused; Rachel McAdams, best known for her role in the Notebook, gets sidelined into the role of Dr. Palmer, a female love interest far less plot-important or interesting than Jane Foster or Pepper Potts. The antagonist Kaecilius is disappointingly un-compelling, despite Mads Mikkelsen’s best efforts, as per the MCU trend of great heroes and weak villains. Only Tilda Swinton manages to rise against the odds, playing her ageless mystical monk as a benevolent but mysterious leader with a

sense of humour, a hint of moral ambiguity and a School of Hard Knocks style of teaching. Despite all the showstop-

HOW TO STOP PROCRASTINATING BY VALERIE WO, L6

o you find yourself always putting off doing something that should have already been completed, and feel frustrated because exams are just around the corner? Fret not, follow these 6 simple steps, and get stuff done!

1.

Make a to-do-list Before you start each day, list down everything that you plan to do that day, prioritizing the more urgent tasks before the less urgent ones, then place that list somewhere you can see it throughout the day. 5 MOVIES THAT WE CAN’T WAIT FOR IN 2017 BY JEREMY GOH, L6

T

he year 2016 has definitely been one hell of a year for movie-goers, with a whole range of awesome movies (like Zootopia and Captain America: Civil War, to mention a couple) being released on the big screen. However, when we take a look at the long list of blockbuster movies lining up, just waiting to be released in 2017, one can’t help but feel giddy with excitement and start thinking: why can’t 2017 come sooner?! So, without further ado, let’s take a look at the top 5 movies that we can’t wait for in 2017.

5) War for the Planet of the Apes (July 14) Back in 2014, the (frankly) amazing prequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was released. After a whole lot of amazing action and emotional storylines between the humans and the apes, the movie ended with Caesar, leader 20 // KT-What?

of the apes, kneeling before a mass of apes, grimly waiting for the inevitable war with the humans to begin. Talk about a cliffhanger. Now after 3 years, the wait is finally over, as Caesar is back in a war that will determine not just the fate of their species, but also the future of the entire planet.

4) Logan (March 3) Just as Robert Downey Jr was born to play Iron Man, Hugh Jackman was born to play Wolverine. Back in the year 2000, Hugh Jackman first debuted as Wolverine in Bryan Singer’s X-Men. Now, it all ends with Logan. Logan will mark the final time Hugh Jackman pops out the adamantium claws as, despite the cries of outrage from fans, he feels that this is the right time to leave. The film takes inspiration from the Old Man Logan comic by Mark Millar. Definitely a must watch, if only to see Hugh Jackman reprise his role as Wolverine for one last time.

3) Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (May 5) Back in 2014, Marvel Studios took it’s biggest risk by deciding to make a movie about a ragtag 22 // KT-What?

bunch of misfits consisting of the likes of a talking tree and a racoon. Well guess what? It paid off big time, as Guardians of the Galaxy turned out to be one of the most successful movies in the Marvel Franchise. Now, the guardians are finally back to the iconic tune “Hooked on a Feeling”, as shown in a recently released trailer. It is still unconfirmed what the main plot of the sequel will be, but it is presumed that the movie will address the issue of Peter Quill aka Star-Lord’s (who?) true parentage, and feature the guardians doing cool stuff. Fun times guaranteed.

2) Kingsman: The Golden Circle (16 June) Kingsman: The Secret Service was an amazing film. The film had everything: suave, witty spies with a sense of humour, Channing Tatum,

Aug/Sept 2016

and bad guys trying to take over the world. Now, Eggsy is back in the second instalment of the Kingsman franchise. This time around, Eggsy, Merlin and Roxy travels to the United States to join forces with their US counterparts after the Kingsman HQ is destroyed by Poppy, an evil American mastermind. Sounds intriguing? Mark your calendars everyone, this is one film that you will not want to miss.

will revolve around the life of 15-year-old Peter Parker studying at Midtown High, trying to balance his life between being an ordinary high school student and being Spider-man. It is also said that the movie will focus more on him being Peter Parker, making the film more relatable. With great power comes great responsibility indeed.

1) Spider-man: Homecoming (July 7) With the likes of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield coming in before him, Tom Holland has some big shoes to fill. However, his performance as Spider-man in Captain America: Civil War has received universal acclaim, leading us to believe that he will indeed be able to fill those shoes. TWO TERMS LEFT BY JIA HUA, U6

n life, there’re always going to be ups and downs. There are going to be things that happen which will bring you up to your highest and events that may send you to rock bottom. If you ever encounter something like that, don’t forget to do three things: forgive, forget and start over. Believe me, it’s easier said than done. I've been studying in KTJ for a year and a half now, 24 // KT-What?

with around 6 months left, I’ve done a lot of reflecting to see how far I've come. The journey in this school has been one of the most amazing adventures I've had. Nonetheless, bad things happened as well. I will admit, I've been holding grudges, dwelling over sad memories, even crying about the one mark in an exam that cost me a better grade. Having said that, without any of these negative events, how does

Although it's alright to reflect on all the negative things that have thrown you off, constantly having it sit at the back of your mind haunting you isn't good either, because in time, it will not only hurt you but the people surrounding you as well.

xhausted. It is the most common thing that happens to all KTJ students. Numerous assignments that we have to do, a chain of tests that never comes to an end and various events that have to be followed are just a few of the many activities that we have to do. For almost 6 months, we have had all this hustle and bustle and now finally the end of term holiday is just around the corner. It will be the perfect occasion to take a break and relax our

mind. Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean that we should be unproductive during the holiday. There are plenty of activities that you can do during the holiday to give you more experience, skills and knowledge, as well as something for your personal statement! Here are just a few suggestions on how you can make your holiday more productive!

Extra Reading

We look at our textbooks almost everyday during term time, which KT-What?! // 27

reduces the time available to explore lots of the other interesting books that are available out there. Doing some extra reading has a great deal of benefits. To start with, you can read books that are related to your subject - this for sure will give you a better idea and understanding of the subject. Alternatively, you can read novels or comics that you find entertaining. According to the www.telegraph. co.uk, research conducted by the University of Sussex showed that reading could reduce stress levels by 68%. So, reading books is a great way to lose all the tension from too much prep!

Getting Job Experience

As a member of society, we

market sometime in the future. It would be beneficial for us to actually jump to it beforehand and be exposed to the reality of a working environment. Besides all the noteworthy experiences, you may also have a chance to learn a new set of skills. “I learned how to cook and serve customers. I also had an opportunity to meet new people and learn how to work collaboratively with them, said Hisyam (L6 IMR) who got his first job experience working in a food court near Johor Bahru. Getting a job/internship may require you to work for a certain amount of time and submit a few documents. If so, make sure that you plan the timing right and you have prepared all the

Sasha Smashes Tennis!

BY QUINCY

Sasha was the 3rd best tennis player in Malaysia, and she is bubbly and friendly. Her best achievement was winning second in the Milo National under 14 tournament. She was born in Kuala Lumpur on January, 27th , 1999. Her Mom inspired her to play tennis at the age of 6 because she played tennis for Australia. She went to her first tournament when she was ten, but sadly she got knocked out of the first round. She uses the Bobolat racket. Although Sasha now plays less tennis in order to study a lot more, she could start again and become number 1 in Malaysia. Her old coach was Selavarajoo. Her idol is Novak Djokovic because of his tenacity and perseverance in his training and her favorite place to travel for tennis is Australia. She has a whopping

50-60 medals. She’s been to an ATF training camp in Bangkok and a tennis tournament in Thailand as well. She has been playing tennis for nine years and for all that time she played for Malaysia. Sasha is more confident playing singles rather than doubles. Her biggest struggle was her mental strength during matches and she overcame this by building up her confidence, training harder and believing in herself. In future, she really wants to have her own company and sell sports equipment instead of playing tennis. To all of the sporty people, here is an aspiring message from her: try your hardest, believe in yourself , never give up, and always concentrate.

Mantin’s Next Usain Bolt BY LEE GING GING

M

antin's fastest runner represented the state in running in Terengganu (a state in Malaysia) on Monday, 3rd Octorber, 2016. Azri won the 50 metres run when he was 8 years old. Then, when he was 10 he started playing football. Do you think you can beat this super star? He can almost beat Usain Bolt and Florence Grith-Joyner’s record times for the 100 metre run. His time for the 100 metres is 11.1 seconds, Usain Bolt’s is 9.58 seconds and the lady’s is 10.49 seconds. Pretty incredible, huh?! This year, he won 2 trophies, one from a district competition and one for the best athlete. He also won 5

gold medals this year, 2 from school and 3 from a district competition. He has broken our school record twice! Azri is a secondary prefects and this is his last year of school. He started running at his primary school sports day. He was 10 when it happened. He was running for fun with his friends when he realized that he was a fast runner. Originally he started out with playing football. He eats a lots of junk food like Sugus (Malaysian candies), lots of Milo (chocolate energy drink) and McDonalds. He also eats a lot of protein like fish and chicken. Before a competition, he will train so that if he gets injured he has time heal. He is better at short distances whereas his brother is better at long distances.

His future plans have nothing to do with sports because he doesn’t take running that seriously. Azri wants to go to the University of Bath in the United Kingdom to study Civil Engineering. He trained and in the end he accomplished it. If you do the same, then you will be able to accomplish your dreams as well. He went to Bukit Jalil to have special training for a month. He felt intimated at first because of all the older and more experienced runners, but they soon helped him time and he felt more comfortable. At KTJ, he is the school’s midfielder and came first place as a defender in the football team. Azri is also the school’s rugby captain.

erm 1 is coming to an end. By now most of you would have settled in and adapted to the exciting KTJ life. For those leaving this academic year, don’t forget to cherish the final 6 months! This term was filled with numerous major and exciting events: teaching us to face our fears and overcome stage fright during house singing, and reminding us the importance of keeping fit and healthy during the inter-house sports and cross country. Despite the ever-changing trends in KTJ, one thing remained constant: music. From House Singing to Talent Time and KTJ in Concert, the music department ensured we were always accompanied by harmonies, making it easier for students to relax and appreciate music every weekend. So, here’s a short playlist to summarize Term 1! Hope you enjoy.

FAQ about driving on Malaysian roads (An adaptation of an article) 1. When can you use the emergency lane? You can use the emergency lane for any emergency. The following is a list of events that qualify as emergencies:You are late for work You left the toaster plugged in at home You are bursting to go to the toilet You have a toothache Your girlfriend is waiting for you. As it is an emergency, you may drive at twice the speed of the other cars on the road. 2. What does the sign ‘Jalan Sehala’ mean? This means ‘One Way Street’ and indicates a street where the traffic is 40 // KT-What?

required to travel in one direction. The arrow on the sign indicates the preferred direction of the traffic flow, but this is not compulsory. If the traffic is not flowing in the direction in which you wish to travel, then reversing in that direction is the best option. 3. What does the sign ‘Dilarang Masuk’ mean? This means ‘No Entry’. However, when used on exit ramps in multi-storey car parks, it has an alternative meaning which is: ‘Short cut to the next level up’. 4. Can I use my mobile phone whilst driving in Malaysia? No problem at all, but it

should be noted that if you wish to use the rear-vision mirror to put on your lipstick or trim your eyebrows at the same time as you are using a mobile phone in the other hand, you should ensure that you keep an elbow free to steer the car. Alternatively, you may place a toddler on your lap and have the child steer the car while you carry out these other essential tasks. 5. What is the speed limit in Malaysia? The concept of a speed limit is alien to Malaysia. 6. Is it necessary to use indicator lights in Malaysia? These blinking orange lights are commonly used by expatriate drivers to indicate that they are about to change lanes. This provides a useful signal to local drivers to close up any gaps: preventing the expatriate driver from

changing lanes. Therefore, it is recommended that expatriate drivers adopt the local practice of avoiding all usage of indicator lights. However, it is sometimes useful to turn on your left hand indicator if you want to merge right, because this confuses other drivers, thus enabling you to take advantage of an unprotected gap in the traffic flow. 7. Finally, the most important rule is that you must arrive at your destination ahead of the car in front of you. This is the sacrosanct rule of driving in Malaysia. All other rules are subservient to this. (P.S. The article above was discovered by random on the internet. After much hard work, I discovered the original article on the website of a David Astley. All credits must go to him as this article is an adaptation of the original one.) KT-What?! // 41
