Alumni News

PRINCIPAL UPDATE Dear Parents, Already the first term is almost over and the Secondary students are enjoying the holiday, with another week to go for the Primary students. The term was incredibly busy with various sporting events including FOBISIA Games and FOBISIA Advanced Music, both held in Phuket. More FOBISIA Games will take place in the coming terms for Primary and U13 in the Secondary. The Primary Winter Concert will take place on Tuesday, 5th December at 6pm in the Secondary Auditorium to which all parents are warmly invited. This is always a great occasion where the children perform their well rehearsed songs. The Senior School play 'Flowers for Algernon' captivated the students last Saturday, with Moana the Form 2 musical being very well received by all a few weeks earlier. The new Technology, Art and Music building is almost complete, sadly, a little behind schedule. We are very excited about using the new facility for both Primary and Secondary School students. We will be refurbishing Jawahir and Irinah boarding houses over the holidays, although it will not be complete until three weeks into January. When we surveyed the students they were in favour of waiting the extra few weeks in January so that they could enjoy a complete refurbishment, rather than the alternative which was to wait until July for it to be finished. We say goodbye to Pn Suria at the end of this term as she begins her retirement after 18 years of service to KTJ. We wish her all the very best for the future. We have hired a new Design Technology teacher who will begin in January and during the next academic year we will re-structure the teaching of Design Technology and Art. We look forward to the boarding students returning on Tuesday, 2nd January with school beginning on Wednesday, 3rd January. Wishing you all a very relaxing and enjoyable holiday with your family, Dr Simon Watson Principal

SENIOR SCHOOL UPDATE

5

“I can’t do it” never accomplished anything; “I will try” has performed wonders. George P Burnham Our students certainly have put their hearts and souls into trying this term: in the classroom, on the sports pitch and in a huge range of different activities across the school. We recently held a very successful House Cross Country event, in which all members of all Houses compete against each other. It was pleasing that so many students took part, as ‘no shows’ cost their House many points, to the dismay of the runners who have worked so hard to inch forward one or two places. Many congratulations go to Naquiyuddin for winning the Senior Boys and to Irinah for winning the Senior Girls competition, as well as to all students who took part and did their best. Last Saturday, the students also donned their House colours for House Athletics. This was a whole day of exciting competition on the track and field, followed by a Tug of War competition. The winning Senior Houses were Naquiyuddin and Irinah for the Athletics and Nadzimuddin and Irinah for the Tug of War. Outside the school, Winnie has continued to impress by being the best Malaysian finisher and Best Amateur at the Sime Darby LPGA 2017. In a recent state athletics tournament, Bryan achieved fourth place in the 3000 m and Cheng Loong third place in the triple jump, fourth in the long jump and second in the 4 x 100 m relay. Examinations are a large part of academic life and our January intake of Lower Sixth students have certainly been trying their best in their recent AS examinations, which concluded on 16 November. Next it is the turn of our Form 5 students, who will sit their trial IGCSE examinations from 4th to 15th January. I encourage all our senior students who will take public examinations this coming May and June to make sure that they have a well-thought out revision timetable in place for the upcoming holiday, making sure that they are as efficient and targeted as possible with their time so that they can balance their academic preparation with time to relax and enjoy being at home. For Form 5 parents, you will have received a form via email from our Registrar’s office asking for you to indicate whether you are planning for your son or daughter to remain at KTJ for their post-IGCSE studies. If this is the case, please do indicate which four A level subjects they intend on studying. Some of you will have attended the talk on this topic given by Ms Wendy Jones, our Head of Sixth Form, prior to the parent teacher meetings on 14 October. Ms Wendy also re-presented this information, as well as information about alternatives to A levels, to the Form 5s in their assembly on 20 November. All forms should be returned to the Registrar prior to 19 January, after which all Form 5 students will be met by a senior member of staff to discuss how well their A level (or alternative) plans fit with their future university and career aspirations. Last year, we brought the timing of our IGCSE Malay examinations a year earlier, with much success. We will repeat the timing of the examinations this year, meaning that Form 4 students of Malay language will sit their IGCSE examination this coming May/June. The students are being thoroughly prepared by their Malay teachers. If you have any questions about the examination, please do get in touch. Once the students have completed their IGCSE examination, they will then move on to the more challenging SPM curriculum for Malay in Form 5. I would like to congratulate your sons and daughters for how hard they have tried this term. The positivity and ‘can do’ spirit is a wonderful part of what makes our community at KTJ special. I would like to wish you all a relaxing, peaceful and purposeful holiday and look forwarding to welcoming all students back to school to try new things and meet new challenges next term. Best wishes, Anna Fournier

PRIMARY SCHOOL UPDATE We’ve had a lovely first term at KTJ International Primary School. It has been my first term as Head of Primary and I have been made to feel extremely welcome and have very much enjoyed working with our excellent staff, our wonderful children, our brilliant PTC and all of our very supportive parents - thank you all! There has been a great amount of excellent learning, exciting events, fun, creativity, inspiration and personal development this term - more than enough for me to fill a primary school newsletter each Friday! Please do have a look at my weekly newsletters, which are available on the school website, to gain further insight into what has been happening at the primary school this term: http://www.ktj.edu.my/1523/ktj-primary/newsletters. Some of the highlights from the term include: a successful primary school cross country event at school involving all of the children from Year 1 up to Year 6; sporting achievements for our school teams including our U11 Girls Basketball Team winning the KLISS tournament; two of our Year 6 boys winning the Petronas Formula 1 Car Design Competition and accompanying the drivers on to the grid at Sepang; excellent - International Primary Curriculum (IPC) Entry Points from all classes at the beginning of term with the prospect of the Exit Points coming very soon; a very well attended and rather spectacular PTC Bollywood Disco which brought the whole school community together; a very successful sustainability week which involved the whole school; the Bukkit Tinggi residential for our Year 4s;

some excellent class assemblies; brilliant achievements from out classes in the International Wordmania Competition; a successful charity bake sale organised by our primary school student council and, fittingly for the end of 2017, a beautiful PTC 2018 Calendar showcasing the children’s artwork. The children have been working hard and enjoying their learning - there is always a lot of exciting learning happening at KTJ and it is a pleasure seeing it all in action. We are working hard to further develop the curriculum and give parents more information about what the children are learning. As well as the weekly newsletter and our teachers sharing information on Google Classroom we hold monthly parent coffee mornings - these have been well attended and it has been good to share information and discuss the curriculum with our parents. We have also introduced the online learning journal to Key Stage 2 so this is now available for every child across the school and gives parents more information about what their child is doing at school. As 2017 draws to a close and I reflect on the last year, our move to Malaysia and the first term at KTJ I am filled with optimism and enthusiasm for 2018. I wish you all a lovely holiday and look forward to seeing you again in the new year! Best wishes, James Twigg

FORM 1 GOPENG TRIP Written by Mikel Arri Jesudoss, F1 Our adventure began on Tuesday, 26th of September 2017. The first challenge was being able to wake up on time and catch our ride to Gopeng. When we reached the camp, we gathered at the “Kongsi Hall”, which in Malay means the “Sharing Hall”, for a quick briefing. After that, we headed into our dorms and quickly grabbed our backpacks and headed out.

Our first lesson was about the history of tin mining in Gopeng and how it all began in the 19th century. Gopeng, we were told, used to be one of the richest places in the world because of its tin production. We were then taught how to use a “dulang” (a wok) to extract tin from the nearby river. First, you have to wet the “dulang”. Then, you have to put some sand in and move it in a circular motion. Eventually, there will be little black spots left. That is your tin. Back then, you would be a millionaire, I guess. Most of us got wet (including me) because we were unaware that we would be standing in the river with our “dulangs”. Later on, we went back to camp, gathered some sticks and dug up tapioca. They split us into two groups: one to gather sticks and one to dig tapioca. Once there were enough resources, we made a small log formation and tried to LIGHT IT UP! Our fire didn't go out in time but, believe it or

not, you don't cook in the fire, you cook in the remains of the fire! Only one group managed to start cooking their tapioca but it eventually started raining. We had to stop and sadly we did not get to taste the tapioca. There are way too many enjoyable activities to describe (the above was just one day). My favourite activities of the trip were rafting and SRT (Swiftwater Risk Training). At SRT, the current was quite strong despite the water level being shallow. I lost my footing and just swam to the shore. There was also the quest for the magic fire where our team came second. Finally, the debriefing sessions was fun. We played bonding games and activities. I really enjoyed the trip, especially the caving, but let's not get another 417 words in. I really hope the school keeps up with these amazing residential trips, fostering friendships and building memories.

FORM 3 GOPENG TRIP

After an earlier than usual breakfast, sixty, slightly sleepy Form 3 students congregated outside the Auditorium waiting to load their kit onto two Gopeng bound coaches. The early start allowed us to miss the KL traffic and so we arrived at our destination and home for the next four days “The Nomad Adventure Camp” as intended. After a short briefing about the facilities and itinerary for our stay in our new home, and with beds made and bags unpacked the important business of lunch was taken care of. Bellies full we headed out to the first of many challenging experiences. For some the idea of pushing oneself to climb across a narrow rock ledge, 15 metres in the air, with what appears to be a hopelessly thin piece of rope as the only thing preventing certain death is a considerable test. For others the idea of voluntarily jumping into a fast flowing river with the express intention of

being swept downstream seems positively inconceivable. And yet this is what we did. From the first activity, caving in Gua Kandu, which culminated (for those brave enough to try) with a flying fox through the cavernous chamber it was evident that Form 3 were prepared to meet the “Challenge by Choice” mantra of the Nomad staff head on. As we moved through the itinerary over the next two days the group had to divide in two, variously spending their morning undertaking the Mountain School Challenge or the Water Rescue Team Challenge, both of which focused on teamwork, communication and safe navigation of challenging situations. This was followed by afternoons putting into practice our new found skills by climbing through an array of high ropes and white water rafting respectively.

and capsizes became “near death experiences”. As the merriment of the day drew to a close each evening was capped with our ‘Phone Lottery’ and ‘Daily Awards’, which provided the opportunity to celebrate personal achievement, be it overcoming adversity (Winner & Warrior), helping others (Wingman) or providing a memorable moment (Wipeout, Wildcard).

As our time in Gopeng was coming to an end there was only one task left ‘The Quest of the Magic Fire’. An adventure race that journeyed into Gua Tempurung, one of Peninsular Malaysia’s largest cave systems. Our teams had to decipher clues that led us to the checkpoints which had different mystery tests. All this in a bid to be the first team to reach the river which flows through the cave so we could slip, slide and swim through crawl spaces, past stalactites and stalagmites and the glittering crystal covered Mealtimes, as at KTJ, provided walls before emerging back into the opportunity to retell the the glorious sunshine with stories of the day. Tall-tales were friendships deepened, challengspun, as slips on wet rocks es overcome and a newfound became “life threatening falls” appreciation of home.

FORM 4 MERSING TRIP

This term over 100 of our Form 4 students took up the opportunity to attend a Marine Adventure Expedition just north of Mersing, Johor. This is the second year of this exciting development to our curriculum which was designed to complement our students’ academic work and give them greater opportunities to develop leadership and team working skills, push students to extend their comfort zones physically and mentally, promote independence and develop an understanding of the environment.

Students took part in a range of activities, on day 1 they learnt about survival skills and how to build a fire and shelter using only basic equipment. Some of the students were so good at this that they even managed to build a shelter than could support five people. Students also took to the water to learn about different methods of sea fishing, and managed to catch a sword fish and stingrays amongst an impressive haul of catch, all of which was released unharmed. Day one was rounded off with a particularly memorable Night walk through the rainforest. In almost complete darkness students had to navigate to each checkpoint in

an activity that required immense bravery, every KTJ student successfully completed the course. Over the next couple of days Form 4 undertook a range of adventure activities including abseiling, kayaking, raft building and a punishing hike up Gunung Arong. What was most pleasing was every student’s willingness to push themselves to complete each activity with some students conquering their fear of heights or open water in the process. The team work and encouragement amongst students really shone through and was commented on by the staff running the activities.

During the expediton the students were also engaged in community service to give back to the local community in which they had stayed in. Students took part in range of tasks helping local residents in need of support. Again the students represented KTJ impeccably and showed a real commitment to helping others. Over the course of the 4 days each student who attended upheld the standards expected of KTJ students and were a credit to the school. The teamwork, commitment and leadership skills shown were nothing short of outstanding. Well done Form 4!

House Singing Champions 2017: Irinah

11

Written by Maesha Mohan, L6 “GUYS DOWN TO COMMON ROOM NOW” is a phrase I heard all too often my first two weeks at KTJ . Being a new Irinian I was completely overwhelmed at the idea of this huge and extremely significant event. What amazed me the most was the amount of enthusiasm and excitement the Irinians had towards this event . As soon as school finished the house was frantic as all the students were always in a rush to get all their priorities straight before House Singing practice . House Singing is truly one of the largest contributors to the close bonds between the Irinians . As we worked side by side day after day, more friendships were made, closer relationships were formed and we all became a lot more reliant on each other for support and encouragement to continue persevering during the stressful time that was House Singing . However the blood, sweat and tears were all worth it in the end . On the day itself I remember how after they announced Alia for third place and Jawahir for second all the Irinians moved closer together. Some Irinans were still full of hope and keeping their calm, others were anxiously grabbing the hands of the people next to them and some sat down quietly filled with feelings of surrender ready to accept

defeat. All of us were thinking “This is it, at this point it’s all or nothing“. When the MC announced Irinah as the 2017 House Singing Champions the atmosphere amongst the Irinians was ecstatic. Tears came gushing out while all of us screamed the house cheer at the top of our lungs, jumping and moving to hug other Irinians . The feeling of knowing everyone’s hard work and dedication had paid off is one that I can only dream of feeling again. Irinah House achieved her 9th win in 13 years of competition! Our achievement was compounded by the fact that we also received the trophy for the Best Musical Accompaniment. What an achievement and what big shoes for the Lower Sixers to fill already! I think all the Irinians will be forever grateful to our Upper Sixes, our Houseparent, Ms Angie, and House Tutors,Madam Yeoh and Ms Pathma, as they are the ones who truly deserve

the trophy. Not to mention a huge thanks to Matron Rajes who helped to maintain our health with her constant concern throughout House Singing. Without them we would have accomplished nothing. The upper six students choreographed, composed and controlled everything. I can’t even imagine how difficult that must have been. There would have been times when they were already stressed because of their exams and yet they still came to practise to coach us. We must have only added to their stress from doing a mixture of things like forgetting our dance moves or singing off pitch or too softly, yet they were continuously encouraging and supportive throughout the entire journey. They all had the same goal of making sure we performed our best on the day itself. I would like to end with saying every single Irinian is a diamond but it was the Upper Sixes that polished us until we shined.

KTJ RISING STARS Winnie NG (Form 4) – Highest Malaysian Finisher at the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia Golf Tournament

Winnie has made us all very proud with her recent performance in the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia Golf Tournament last month. At only 16, she was the best finisher among eight other Malaysian players in the tournament and she was also named Best Amateur Player. This is Winnie’s second appearance at this tournament which has been great exposure for our young golfer. Winnie has been on great form all year and has won three senior local amateur titles – Kuala Lumpur Open, Sabah Open and Kelantan Open. Besides helping Malaysia to a runners-up finish in the Katrini Cup (U17 girls) in the South-East

Asian Team Championship last month, Winnie also represented Malaysia at the Queen Sirikit Cup. More recently, Winnie won the Penang Amateur Open 2017. “My next immediate goal is to try and win an international amateur title” said Winnie to the Star newspaper. KTJ have every confidence that Winnie can achieve this goal and we have fully enjoyed following her success story this year!

13 Dheena Menon (Form 3) – One of the First Malaysian Mouseketeers of Club Mickey Mouse The Walt Disney Company South-East Asia set up auditions to recruit talented youngsters for the new Club Mickey Mouse Show. Over 6000 talents auditioned and KTJ Student, Dheena, was selected for one of the parts. The 13 episode Club Micky Mouse sees the Mouseketeers singing, dancing, playing games and interviewing celebrity guests. The process of recruiting the cast and filiming the show took about two months. The show premiered on September 15th on the Disney Channel. Dheena is described by her fellow Mouseketeers as the intelligent one who

loves Science! This is a fantastic achievement for Dheena and we wish her all the best with her future television appearances.

U15 FOBISIA GAMES 2017 At times it was impossible not to feel a little excited, but apprehensive by the basic point of it all - Interbattle! Yes the u15 FOBISIA Games 2017 Thailand - Phuket. In the build up to the event, there has been performances and successes of last years games in Beijing 2016.

The impressive Thanyapuru Complex played host to an intense but enjoyable three days of competition. Day 1, which covered Swimming and Athletics, brought some excellent competition. Many of the medal winners from that day that included Ji Min (two golds in the 100m & 200m), Chong Hong Zhi (gold medal in the high jump), Ewan Chan Kye (sliver in the 50m Fly) and silver in the Girls and Boys 4x100m relay, impressed. The medal count also added further sense of achievement that totaled, 6 Golds, 5 Silvers and 7 Bronze n Total = 1, and surpassed our goals. Day 2 competition, there was a thrilling bronze medal in the girl's football after a last gasp winner versus ISPU and victories against REGB, ISB and NAIS. It was a similar situation in the boy's basketball category, with a plethora of KTJ talent set to

MVP performances from James and Hong Zhi, only to be outgunned in the second quarter by a superb REGP. A tough loss but a hard earned silver took our tally to 44 medals. Although a challenging Day 3, that witnessed both Girls Basketball and Boys Football. There were many notable improvement in two sports that have develop. Chaeyeon and Heeseo impressed for the girls on defence as did Alvin in central

praise both for achieving this year’s performance FOBISIA Games such a success that it was. U13’s are next up in March! No pressure!

PRIMARY SCHOOL BOLLYWOOD DISCO Written by Primary PTC “The whole scene looked like a Bollywood movie set. The Bollywood Disco recently held in October was a raving success. The PTC is happy to report that both children and adults enjoyed themselves tremendously! There was dancing to pulsating Bollywood numbers, wonderful, flavourful food from Basil Leaves, yummy cold ice cream treats for the kids and the wonderful desserts, cakes and treats brought in by parents to make the event an extremely successful one. The moment the Bhangra troupe came on set, they blew everyone away with their colourful costumes, amazing beat of the dhol and the graceful, energetic movements of the dancers. It just got everyone up and moving to the beat! Credit goes to the tremendous

support received from parents and the wonderful children who cheered and took part wholeheartedly in all the events.

16

Special mention to the face painters, Valerie and Pamela who missed out on the whole evening as they feverishly painted face after face that night. The Photo Booth was also a huge success as everyone went home with pictures. The teachers organised games and some took to the dance floor to teach us novices some slick moves. Even the head teacher Mr. James, Cathryn his wife and Toby his son came dressed for the occasion in their Bollywood finery. A big thank you also to the fun deejays from secondary. It was a truly enjoyable night that showcased our school spirit so well.

YEAR 4 BUKIT TINGGI TRIP

This term, the Year 4 children enjoyed a two-night stay in Bukit Tinggi as part of their residential trip. During this time the children got to take part in a variety of exciting activities. These activities included wall climbing, a canopy walk, horse riding, a 6D cinema, swimming, arcade games, souvenir shopping, team building games and bowling. These activities and this environment provided the children with a unique opportunity to further develop skills such as independence, responsibility, teamwork and resilience. The children had a fabulous time as they got to grips with their tasks and activities, ensuring

they supported their friends in the process. It is great to see the children now transferring the skills they developed on the trip back into the classroom and within their learning. A whole host of memories were formed which the children will treasure for many years to come.

PRIMARY SPORTS SUMMARY We’ve had a great term of sport with the children taking part in their P.E. lessons each week, during our wide range of ECA sports activities and in sports competitions and events. Here are some of the events and competitions so far this academic year:

Cross Country

Basketball

The academic year got off to a healthy start with the primary school Cross Country race in August. It was a lovely school event with great effort and determination shown by the children and a friendly and supportive atmosphere from the crowd - it was great to be joined by so many parents and we all really appreciated the support.

KTJ hosted the KLISS (Kuala Lumpur International School Sports) U11 Boys and Girls Basketball on the 27th September. We had 8 boys and 8 girls taking part in the competition. It was a very competitive event with great participation from all - the girls team managed to get into the Cup final winning two of their games and losing one, whilst the boys team went on to the plate final. The girls team continued to do extremely well and, in the finals, beat 9 other international schools to win the whole tournament.

Our Cross Country team ran very well at Nexus school in October about 400 children were running and KTJ sent approximately 30 children with almost 10 of the children receiving a bronze medal (between 3rd and 10th place).

Swimming Our swimming team took part in a friendly competition against Epsom school - the children swam very well indeed taking many of the top places!

Benchball We saw great play at the KLISS benchball tournament in November which was also hosted at KTJ both the KTJ boys and girls teams came in second place. Well played all! The children will also be taking part in an interclass benchball competition during the last week of term.

Football Our football teams who played very well and had some excellent results at Epsom school in November. KTJ U11 boys won 16-1, U9 boys lost 3-5, U11 girls won 7-4 and U9 girls won 2-0. Well done all!

More Sport to Come As well as all of the sport and events planned for next term; the PTC are putting plans are in place for extra sports training on a Saturday morning for interested KTJ Primary school children in KS2. This is going to start in January with football training. Watch out for information about how to sign up for this coming home for parents.
