PRINCIPAL UPDATE Dear Parents, It is difficult to believe that I have spent seven years at Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar, the time has passed both quickly and enjoyably! This year, like every year, has seen much success for the students. The Primary students had their most successful FOBISIA event since the school started in 2013, winning Athletics and Swimming and coming second in T-Ball and Football. In total they won 33 gold medals, 31 silver medals and 20 bronze medals – a huge achievement for such a young and relatively small school. In the Secondary school, we have had numerous sporting achievements: in November the U15 FOBISIA team girls came third in football and the boys came second in basketball, while the U13 FOBISIA came second in athletics and a trophy haul of 18 golds, 21 silver and 20 bronze medals. Winnie and Victor Ng continue with their meteoric accomplishments in golf with Winnie being the best placed amateur on the LGPA held in Malaysia. We also had the fantastic musical Moana, KTJ in Concert, Drama with Flowers for Algernon and debate success at Forensics. These are a small selection of the many, many activities that take place every year at KTJ. The enthusiasm of the students and the dedication of the staff ensure that KTJ is a thriving and lively place to live and learn. As I look back over the past seven years, I am pleased with (most of!) the initiatives that I have brought to the school; the new facilities, financial stability and the improved conditions for staff and students to name a few. My successor, Dr Glenn Moodie, will no doubt continue to make changes and bring fresh ideas to a wonderful school. Everyone has played a role in making KTJ a success; the dedicated teachers, the unstinting efforts from the admin and service staff, the enthusiasm of the students, the guidance and support from the Trustees and my family. Without this network, the school would not be recognised as one of the best schools in Malaysia. It will be sad to leave but I am happy to know that during the past seven years the changes have improved the lives of those that live and work at KTJ. I wish you all the very best for the future as you take it to even greater heights!

MIDDLE SCHOOL UPDATE
Dr. Watson always reminds students at school assembly that time passes very quickly and this certainly has been the experience for Middle School. In this one year, the various activities, events, lessons, expeditions, examinations, sports and co-curricular activities make it feel like it was only a few months ago that we started the new academic year.

First and foremost, I wish to thank our Form 3 students who “graduate” from Middle school for their enthusiasm and self-development. We have seen many of them mature, develop new skills, make mistakes and learn from these. Just recently, many of them performed on stage during the Form 3 Music Night and Junior Talentime. It was pleasing to see our students practising earnestly before the events and maintain their composure during the performances to produce splendid shows. I am delighted that a group of Form 2 students are performing at our annual Speech Day. It is not often Middle school students perform at this most important event in the school. One student is presenting his speech from SEA Forensics while others are performing a song. Our current Form 2 students will have exposure to IGCSE course in the next two terms, when they are in Form 3. This includes subject briefings by IGCSE teachers, IGCSE mentoring sessions by Upper Six Naquiah Prefects, parents’ briefing and parents’ meeting with IGCSE teachers. More details of these sessions will be conveyed next term. The tentative expedition dates and destinations for 2018/19 are: Form 1: 30 October to 2 November to Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan Form 2 (current Form 1): 30 October to 2 November to Janda Baik, Pahang Form 3 (current Form 2): 25 to 28 September to Gopeng, Perak I wish all our students a good holiday. SENIOR SCHOOL UPDATE ‘Life is like riding a bicycle: to keep your balance, you must keep moving.’ Albert Einstein Dear Parents, And so we have come to the end of the academic year. The Upper Sixth have graduated and we have just had the final assembly in which we’ve said farewell to all the teachers who are leaving and also to Dr Watson. We laughed together as memories were recalled and there were a few tears, but that is okay! The relationships that we make are the key to our own and our communities’ success and moving on is hard when it means saying goodbye, or farewell, to people that are important to you. For the parents of our Upper Sixth students, I would like to congratulate you on your son or daughter having competed secondary school. We are so proud of all that your children have achieved and eagerly await to hear about their exam results and the movement that they make through their university courses and careers. Our Alumni Association is very strong and they will be welcomed by ex-KTJers all over the world. For our Form 5 parents, I remember well the agonising, two-month wait for IGCSE results to be released. These first public examinations are challenging due to the range of subjects studied and the students did their best to prepare for them. For those who will return to KTJ next term, I look forward to welcoming them into the Sixth Form. For those who decide to move on to pastures new, please do keep in touch and I encourage them to join our Alumni Association. For our Lower Sixth and Form 4 parents, I hope that you have a relaxing holiday with your children. Please do spend time talking to your daughter or son about what they have achieved during the course of the last term. KTJ is a busy school with a wealth of opportunities on offer. Ask them about their participation this term in the ECA programme; the many talks put on by different universities; School, House, District and State sports fixtures; the Careers fair; the Accounting project; their House night; the computer programming course and the various Interact visits to a dog shelter and an orphanage. When they return next term, they also need to keep on moving towards a goal of learning more and acquiring more skills every day. I’d like to finish this message with a thank you to Dr Watson, who is moving on from KTJ after 7 years as Principal. He is an inspiring leader and has brought so much positive change to the School. We can thank him for the running track, the completion of the building of the primary school, an additional squash court, the Arc, the Cafe, the new School Shop and the Waterfront as well as the refurbishment of the gym, the dining hall and the boarding Houses. Dr Watson has changed the culture of KTJ dramatically, making the atmosphere more positive, happy and learning-focused. We will all miss his caring, humble and resilient leadership and hope that he finds new challenges and great happiness in his move to Bahrain. Best wishes Anna Fournier Head of Senior School annafournier@ktj.edu.my

PRIMARY SCHOOL UPDATE Dear Parents, Since the last issue of Connect in Term 1 the primary children have continued to impress and it is wonderful to see their hard work and good progress as well as the support and friendship they offer each other. The children lead very full lives at KTJ Primary and our last two terms have been packed full of learning, achievements and enjoyment. There have been many sporting highlights including the Primary school having our most successful Primary FOBISIA games - winning both the overall athletics and swimming competitions and performing very well in TBall and football too. The state swimming competition also saw KTJ primary win a host of medals and the children have done us proud in KLISS competitions and during our sports day, mini Fobisia and school events. Beyond this we have seen our children perform well outside of school too - with champions in squash, taekwondo and tennis. We have also seen great success off the sports field most recently with KTJ Primary children coming both first and second place in the Private and International School Fair Poetry Slam Competition. We’ve worked hard on developing our curriculum to meet the needs of our children and to give the right level of challenge. The implementation of the new primary curriculum for Literacy and Mathematics this year, as well as new assessment and reporting procedures has seen great teamwork from the primary staff who have exemplified the school values of mutual-respect, empathy and compassion. There are always further ways to improve and we are looking forward to continuing our curriculum and school development work next year. Thank you to our supportive parents - I’ve very much enjoyed getting to know you this year as I have your children. You have joined us and shared in your children’s learning during entry and exit points and class assemblies. We have been transported around time and place - from Ancient Egypt to a Mission to Mars - as the children have shared their learning across the curriculum. The support for Saturday morning sports, our coffee mornings and our school events has shown what a special community we have at KTJ. Reflecting on our school events, I’d also like to take the opportunity to say thank you to our wonderful PTC - what a team! Over the last two terms we’ve enjoyed amazing PTC events all done with great community spirit and also a great deal of style - our Chinese New Year celebrations, International Family Fun Day and our first ever Spring Bazaar are all highlights over the last two terms. Added to this we’ve released the school cookbook to end all school cookbooks - thank you all! Thank you again to the children, parents and staff for making this a wonderful year at KTJ Primary. .

THE WATERFRONT OPENING Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar recently opened a new 20,000 square foot building which is dedicated to music, art and technology subjects. The opening was officiated by Yang Amat Mulia Tunku Naquiyuddin ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja'afar who is the Head of Governors and Trustees of the school and the ceremony was graced by presence of Yang Maha Mulia Tunku Ampuan Tuanku Najihah binti Almarhum Tunku Besar Burhanuddin, Yang Amat Mulia Tunku Tan Sri Imran, Yang Amat Mulia Tunku Dara Tunku Tan Sri Naquiah, Yang Amat Mulia Tunku Nadzaruddin, and Dato’ Richard Small.
The building has been named The Waterfront due to its scenic location overlooking the school lake and it is the latest in several projects to modernise and upgrade the facilities of the school. Boasting 6 music rooms, a recording studio and dedicated rooms for art, graphic design, textiles, clay modelling, resistant materials and food technology; the Waterfront highlights KTJ’s commitment to the holistic development of its students. The new facilities in the art rooms will enable students to bring their creative ideas to life. In the music practice rooms, students are able to play their music whilst looking out on to the beautiful scenery. The new resources, space
and facilities for technology has allowed the school to introduce new skills such as textiles and further enhance existing areas of technology and design. Lessons in the new building will equip students with lifelong skills that will be useful regardless of whatever path they may choose. In his speech at the opening ceremony of The Waterfront, Dr Watson said that he is confident the upgraded facilities for art and music will encourage prospective students entering the Sixth Form to take up these subjects for A Level. It is the school’s expectation that the scenic location and modern facilities will inspire students, both old and new, to pursue their creative passions in KTJ.

IRINAH INTERHOUSE NETBALL 2018 Written by Rachel Lau, L6 Resilience, is in the minds of every Irinian. It was not long since the inter-house football, and now it’s the inter-house netball. Each nearing day to competition, Irinians worked together with teamwork and trained hard on their passes and strategies, sharing ideas and skills with one another. Led by our House Captain, Housna, practices for netball were never considered a waste of time.
On the actual day, we had 2 teams competing, the senior girls and junior girls. The senior girls played resiliently, not giving up even though they played under the blazing hot midday sun with 2 back-to-back games against Jawahir and Alia. They managed to win 1 out of 2 games, leading the Irinah seniors to 2nd place overall. The junior girls however, were not as lucky but still managed to emerge with 3rd place, out of 4 placings. They played hard and never gave up until the end. Nevertheless, we will never forget the support from all the Irinians! Giving their fullest support in cheering the team on,
whether it was a win or loss. It was the house spirit which added to the further success of this inter-house. Everyone definitely had a memorable experience as it is not about winning or losing, it is about the fun and experiences everyone shared together. Irinah will definitely come back stronger in the other upcoming inter-house games and will never give up.

AN EVENING WITH NURUL IZZAH A month before Malaysia’s landmark elections on May 9th, a group of KTJ students attended a talk and Q&A with opposition member of parliament, YB Nurul Izzah bte Anwar. After successfully defending the ‘family seat’ of Permatang Pauh, Nurul is now a key member of government, responsible for revamping technical and vocational education. The dinner event was held at the Bukit Kiara club in KL and hosted by the Oxford & Cambridge Society of Malaysia. YB Nurul mingled with the guests before subjecting herself to a grilling from a critical and skeptical moderator, KTJ 6th Form teacher, Mark Disney. She spoke candidly about corruption, the weaknesses of her own opposition, whether she, her father and her mother constituted a political dynasty, and what it was like to be in partnership with her family’s former nemesis, Tun Dr Mahathir. Nurul then took questions from the audience. The KTJ student table pressed her on economic, youth, family, and LGBT issues, all of which she handled with charm and refreshing honesty.
The Oxbridge Society organises regular talks with politicians, corporate, and civil society figures that cover a range of topics of relevance to young Malaysians. These events form part of a larger programme – the KTJ Super Curriculum – that feature talks, debates, documentaries, and trips for 6th Form students who are aiming for highly competitive universities.

SERVICE ABOVE SELF Updates from Interact Club
The third term of the 2017/18 academic year saw the appointment of the new BoD (Board of Directors) for the Interact Club. So far, a total of four events have been organized and coordinated by us in the midst of the exam term. Under the leadership of our new President and Vice President Interactors, Benjamin Tan and Jia Jhing, we held our very first event – our Installation Dinner (also known as Leaver’s Night for most clubs). Having been given barely three weeks to discuss, plan and prepare for the evening after our International Understanding Week on Russia, we managed to pull a few strings to make this event a success; with the attendance of Rotarian Christina Chai and Mr. David Thaw, our teacher advisors and 70 members. Dining Hall Heroes is a known service within the school by the Interact Club in KTJ. It is one week where members of the club assist in the serving of food during dinner time and in the cleaning-up after dinner service. The main objective of this activity is for us to raise awareness of the dedication and contribution of the dining hall staff among students, in hope that there would be an increase in appreciation for the Pak Ciks and Mak Ciks whom work tirelessly in the dining hall and kitchen catering to our needs every day.
During term 3, 30 members of the Interact Club visited Susan’s Dogsville, an animal shelter in Broga, single-handedly run by the owner – Susan. They helped washing the dog cages, painting the shelter walls, cleaning the dogs, and learned how to run a charity organisation. The members also raised RM1,000 to serve the basic needs of the dogs.

Our most recent event was organised for 40 Myanmar refugees from Little Flower Learning Center in Seremban, aged 6 to 14 years old, who visited KTJ for a day of fun and games with our club members. Many interactive games and football matches were played on the day, exchanges were held during the afternoon tea with the parents and teachers of the learning center. We took this opportunity to honor the courage and resilience of the refugees and have a belated celebration of World Refugee Day 2018. We were grateful that many students and teachers of KTJ took part in our Backpack project, donated their pre-loved bags, clothes, stationery and many day-to-day necessities to the school-going refugee children.

PHYSICS OLYMPIAD
On Monday 4th June, ten KTJ students attended the Physics Olympiad at Alice Smith School, Puchong. The challenge set involved students building an earthquake proof building that utilised a pendulum at its core just like the Taipai 101 tuned mass damping system. The students had only marshmallows and sticks of pasta to build their structures and were assessed on the structures ability to withstand a simulated earthquake for one minute. The design process was key to success and awards were given for performance against the clock and design.
Our students enjoyed the fierce competition and were able to explore how different designs would work under stress in different directions. A system of trial and error was used by all teams and KTJ were able to secure top and 3rd spots for their designs. The team would like to thank Alice Smith for holding the event and Mr Walker for taking the time out to select the team and chaperone them on the day.

KTJ CLIMBERS It's been a busy year on the ropes for our KTJ climbers! The club has grown significantly and it has been great to see so many new faces, all eager to push themselves out of their comfort zone by trying this extreme sport.
This year, the club has started to climb competitively as part of the ISAC climbing league. The league has given all of our climbers a renewed focus and drive to improve their top-roping and bouldering skills. We are very proud to announce that in a series of three competitions, KTJ have been crowned overall champions for 2018! Whilst we have seen some phenomenal individual performances from our climbing superstars Aris, Adam, Benji, Sara and Darshini, this title wouldn't have been possible without the support of the rest of the team. We hope that we will see the club go from strength to strength in the coming year.
UPCYCLE MENTOR CHALLENGE
On the 27th of June, we had our first whole school event at The Waterfront. The Upcycle Mentor Challenge saw students from forms 1-4 create a whole range of upcycled products in their mentor groups, with the aim learning more about how we can reuse old products and be more sustainable. There were some brilliant entries including coat racks, microwave plant pots, larger than life sheep and a light
up robot. It was wonderful to see all the hard work displayed around the various new art and design rooms and to see the students enjoying the glorious weather by the lake. Congratulations to the KTJ Vote winners, Mr Simon Lai's group and the judges winners, Ms Mary-Alex's group, we hope they enjoyed their sustainable and delicious prizes.

PRIMARY SQUASH During 2017/18, our KTJ Squash players have achieved some fantastic results. The year has seen great play from all involved. Well done to Harleein, Surabhi, Wayne, Nasywa, Koshalaa and Zoei who have all done very well indeed. A particular mention to Surabhi for winning the NS Junior League 1st Leg 2018 and Harleein for winning three of the major squash tournaments she has taken part in over the year. On top of this Harleein, of Year 4, was crowned number 1 in Malaysia for her age range - a fantastic achievement! Three of the students recently competed in the 4th CMS Borneo Open 2018 in Kuching. In the U11 category, Harleein picked up 3rd place, Nasywa 18th and Wayne 10th place. It is amazing to see our primary students grow in this sport and we look forward to supporting them next year as they face new and exciting challenges.

PISF POETRY SLAM
Earlier this term Primary students from Year 5 and 6 were invited to enter the Private and International School Fair Poetry Slam. This was the first ever PISF Poetry Slam and schools from in and around KL were invited to participate. Initially, nine children entered the competition. To prepare their entries, they all attended a lunchtime workshop with Mr. Ryan to discuss the theme and idea of Reimagining Education. During this workshop, the children also had an opportunity to discuss different tools used by poets such as repetition, similes, and metaphors. The children then drafted their own poems at home. Constructive feedback was given to the children and they continued to redraft their poems at home. After submitting their poems we were delighted to discover that four of the nine children had reached the finals. The children were given strict instructions and a long list of rules to abide by for the competition. On the week of the competition, the children practised their performances in front of their own class and in front of
the entire Primary school during assembly. This experience was invaluable in helping the children get over any last minute jitters! It was the day of the final and all four finalists arrived punctually, looking smart in their KTJ uniforms. The competition was held in Mid Valley at the International schools fair. When it came to their turn to perform, each child confidently arrived on stage and performed with confidence, flair and with a smile on their face. The hard work paid off as KTJ won both first and second prizes! News of the KTJ primary winners was anounced during the fair and more recently in the Star Metro newspaper. With the awards announced the children graciously accepted their prizes and congratulated each other and the ten other finalists. After interviews and lots of photos, it was time for the children to return home and enjoy the rest of their well earned weekend. A huge thank you to all the children, parents and staff involved, for their support and help.

PRIMARY FOBISIA On the morning of the 1st May KTJ Primary school set off to Phuket,Thailand to take part in the Primary FOBISIA games against other British schools in Asia. Upon arriving at the very well equipped Thanyapura Resort we were shown our rooms and went to a buffet dinner which was much enjoyed by everyone after a lot of travelling. After this there was a quick team briefing before we all settled down for an early night. Tuesday 2nd of May was the official start of the games, in the opening ceremony everyone paraded their school’s flag and we got to evaluate our competitors. The day started off with the swimming contest with U10 boys and girls relays, followed by the U11 boys and girls . We came 3rd, 1st, 1st and 2nd respectively which was a great start to our FOBISIA campaign. KTJ was triumphant in all swimming categories, placing in the top three in almost every race. Special mentions go out to Hann who finished 1st in the U10 boys medley; Jesslyn who picked up 1st in the U11 25m freestyle; Pietta who finished 1st U10 25m butterfly; Sheng Ze came 1st in the U11 Breaststroke; and Killian, Ji Hoon, Shen Ze and Qing Ping finished 1st in the U11 freestyle relay. We came 1st overall in the swimming category against the six other schools. Following a tiring morning of swimming, athletics was meant to start promptly however a thunderstorm hit. Due to the unsafe weather conditions we were not allowed to start athletics until it had passed, this luckily gave everyone a well deserved break. Once the weather had cleared athletics begun starting with boys track events and girls field events. KTJ once again won, being crowned champions of the athletics category. Special thanks must go to our parents for all the food and support they provided and Miss Anna for constantly running across the middle of the track to be with everyone before and after they finished their race. It was a long day that continued past 8 o’clock but we had proved that we were the school to beat. The next day was scorching hot and KTJ were due to play T-Ball matches in their A,B and C teams meaning everyone had a go. There were
some incredible matches played including our C team winning one match 18-9 and A team beating TBS 15-10. Overall our A,B and C teams came 2nd, 3rd and 1st respectively. On Thursdays it was Football with boys matches in the morning and girls matches in the afternoon. All KTJ teams played outstandingly on the last day of the tournament. Our Boys A and B teams came 4th and 3rd place, and our Girls A and B teams finished 3rd and 2nd. Superb performances came from Song Chen, Rayshmund, Faez, Ella, Lorcan, Prahnya and Chloe. Again our parents supported us so well in these events with many thanks to Prahnya’s father for providing some brilliants tips and coaching to the teams. After the Football matches and final presentations of awards, a gala dinner was held for all the schools. The gala had traditional Thai entertainment as well as a disco however, due to their great performances on the field and feeling quite drained, most of KTJ decided to go to bed early! Thank you once again to all the parents that came and supported as well as all staff involved in organising the trip and well done to KTJ Primary for an amazing performance, many schools next year will know we are the ones to beat!

CLASS OF 2018 Written by Aniq Hazis, Vice President, Sixth Form Committee 2018/2019
On the 23rd of June 2018, the Upper Sixth students celebrated their graduation dinner at Thistle Hotel, Port Dickson. The evening kicked off with an inter-table quiz, much like the school’s University Challenge. Since learning never ends in KTJ, the outgoing seniors and Sixth Form teachers applied their general knowledge to gather as many points to win first serve on the buffet line. Some of the quiz questions included, NBA trivia, ‘finish the lyrics’ and KTJ trivia. The students were then left to eat and socialise. We heard many students reminisce and talk about how they were planning to spend their pre-university summer. After dinner, the students played pass the parcel. As the music stopped, the entire table with the parcel was required to come to the front of the hall to answer some questions about their time in KTJ. We asked them to share their best memories and the naughtiest thing they had done whilsts at KTJ. Our Sixth Form teachers also had the parcel land on their table, hence, had to tell us the most embarrassing thing that had happened to them in school. Concluding the evening, we heard lovely speeches from the Head of Sixth Form, Ms. Wendy, the President of the Sixth Form Committee, Zi Ern and Mr. Ross Marshall, a Deputy Head of Sixth Form who will be leaving KTJ at the end of this academic year. The leavers had time to take pictures on the beach beneath the mesmerising twilight. On the 26th of June 2018, the Upper Sixth students officially graduated from KTJ. The graduation ceremony was officiated by Yang Amat Mulia Tunku Naquiyuddin ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar, Chairman of Board of Governors and Trustees. Amongst the other guests of honour were Yang Amat Mulia Tunku Tan Sri Imran ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar, Yang Mulia Che Puan Dato’ Nora Marzuki, Dato’ Richard Small, Mr. Niza Idris and Mr. Leong Yeng Kit. Family and friends of the Upper Sixth students gathered in the auditorium to watch the outgoing students receive their scrolls. The students were all dressed in their graduation robes with mortar boards on. We first heard a speech from the Principal of KTJ, Dr. Simon Watson, then from YDP. Tunku Naquiyuddin Almarhum Ibni and lastly Mr. Leong Yeng Kit, the first headboy of KTJ. Each speaker handed out scrolls to a number of students according to alphabetical order. In between speeches, each house, who were asked to prepare a graduation video, had their videos played for all the guests to watch. We also got to hear beautiful and inspiring speeches from the Heads of School, Khor Jia Wei and Salma Rizkia. The event ceremony ended with a final speech from the Head of Sixth Form, Ms. Wendy Jones. The ceremony was then adjourned to the dining hall where the guests of honour, family and friends were served lunch. One final meal for the class of 2018. Both days were filled with laughter and tears seeing as the Upper Sixth students were parting ways. A day after, we immediately felt their absence. The Arc a little too quiet, the cafe a little too empty and the boarding houses a little less lively. We will miss you, Class of 2018. KTJ awaits your return.

KTJ SNAPS Well done to the KTJ Cricket teams on their performances this year as for many of the students it was the first time they had represented KTJ in this sport. The teams have progressed over the year and we are looking forward to their improved performances in 2018/2019!
Congratulations to Huang Jia Yi on her award for Outstanding Cambridge Learner: Top in Malaysia for IGCSE Accounting June 2017.
