THE MAJORITY OF PLASTIC WASTE IS EITHER INCINERATED, PRODUCING CARBON DIOXIDE WHICH ADDS ON TO GLOBAL WARMING, OR LYING IN LANDFILL SITES WHERE IT CAN TAKE UP TO A THOUSAND YEARS TO DECOMPOSE AND EVEN WHEN IT DOES COMPOSE, IT BREAKS DOWN INTO MICROPLASTICS. MUCH OF THE PLASTIC THAT IS FOUND IN LANDFILL ALSO MAKES ITS WAY INTO THE OCEAN AND THERE IT CAN CAUSE DEVASTATING HARM TO THE CREATURES WITHIN IT.

ACCORDING TO A 2015 STUDY IN SCIENCE MAGAZINE, MALAYSIA IS THE EIGHTH WORST COUNTRY WORLDWIDE FOR PLASTIC WASTE. THE STUDY ESTIMATED THAT MALAYSIA PRODUCED ALMOST ONE MILLION TONNES OF MISMANAGED PLASTIC WASTE IN 2010 ONLY.

THE GREAT PACIFIC GARBAGE PATCH, AKA THE PACIFIC TRASH VORTEX, IS ESTIMATED TO BE DOUBLE THE SIZE OF TEXAS. ACCORDING TO NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE, SCIENTISTS GATHERED 750,000 BITS OF PLASTIC IN 1 SQUARE KM OF THAT FLOATING ISLAND.

IS MALAYSIA BECOMING A HAVEN FOR PLASTIC WASTE? THIS QUESTION HAS BEEN BROUGHT UP VERY RECENTLY BY MANY NETIZENS AS MALAYSIA HAS BEEN RECEIVING AN INCREASE OF PLASTIC WASTE FROM THE US. ACCORDING TO AN ANALYSIS BY US CENSUS BUREAU DATA BY UNEARTHED, THE US SHIPPED OVER 157,299 TONNES OF PLASTIC WASTE TO MALAYSIA, A RISE OF 273% WITHIN THE FIRST SIX MONTHS IN 2018.

SOMETHING THAT WE HAVE TO ACCEPT IS THAT PLASTIC IS NOT GOING TO GO ANYWHERE, ANYTIME SOON. PLASTIC THAT HAS BEEN DEGRADED ONLY EXACERBATES THE SITUATION BECAUSE THERE IS A HIGHER CHANCE THAT MARINE LIFE MIGHT CONSUME THE MICROPLASTICS AND WHEN WE EAT THE FISH, WE ARE INGESTING THE MICROPLASTICS AS WELL. PLASTIC CANNOT BE MINERALIZED OR DECOMPOSED, MEANING THAT THEY EXIST INDEFINITELY, AND THEIR NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE ECOSYSTEM CONTINUES IN A NEVERENDING NIGHTMARE.

MALAYSIA SUSTAINABLE?

Malaysia, a rapidly growing nation filled with various cultures and ethnicities all merging together.

However, with that in mind do you know how much waste is created in Malaysia alone? Well it's about 30,000 metric tons every day and only 5% of it is recycled. That may not sound much but, this is a big issue for Malaysia. Although it is a big concern within the nation, much of it is as a result of economic development, both through industry and our increasing consumer spending. So how do we balance economic growth and its benefits, alongside our need to protect the planet for future generations.

Malaysia is the fastest growing economy amongst ASEAN countries, this rapid growth rate is attributed mainly in the ability to exploit the environmental resource base available for the country. The early European colonialists who came over to Malaysia drove a vigorous desire to exploit the country's rich environmental resource base and the exploitation trend continues today. Did you know that between 2000-12 Malaysia had the highest rates of deforestation in the world? Government programs to develop and promote investment in the key sectors of agriculture, manufacturing, and services will need to be dealt with in a holistic manner.

Environmental resource exploitation is an important generator of economic growth but, since the colonial periods, environmental resource exploitation also has led to a steady increase in environmental degradation.

Environmental degradation issues are becoming more intense and frequent in the last half decade or so, not only in Malaysia but for the Southeast Asia Region as a whole. Environmental degradation would impact on the country's societal wellbeing and quality of life. The last half decade also witnesses the emerging importance of trans boundary issues which further impact the well-being and quality of life in Malaysia. This paper discusses the attempts by Malaysia to address the environmental degradation within the whole fabric of sustainable development at both the National and International levels. The discussion is examining the issues, challenges and prospects of environmental management strategies.

With the arrival of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), comprising 17 environmental, economic, and social objectives, Malaysia has made several official commitments to sustainable development. It has pledged a 40 percent reduction in carbon emissions per unit of gross domestic product by 2020, while reiterating its commitment at the Rio Summit in 1992 to keep at least 50 percent of the nation’s landmass under forest cover. Building on its reputation as an exporter of solar products, Malaysia also aspires to become the hub of green technology in Southeast Asia. It is leading the manufacturing and marketing of electric vehicles in the region. In May 2016, the Kedah-based company, Amber Dual Sdn. Bhd, formed a joint venture with the Beijing Auto International Corporation to begin production of electric vehicles in July 2016. More recently there have been laws passed relating to energy efficiency in consumer goods. The government aims to increase energy efficiency by 15% and has now implemented regulation which states that no electric products are allowed to enter Malaysia that do not carry a four or five star energy rating. Finaly, a really interesting new initiative in the Green Sukuk, Malaysia, is home to the world’s largest sukuk market (sharia compliant investment bonds) and has now pioneered green sukuks, where the money invested is used to help develop and invest in sustainable and eco-friendly projects.

These official commitments are steps in the right direction, but they gloss over two contentious issues, palm oil production and illegal logging, where Malaysia has drawn heavy criticism for poor development planning, weak environmental regulation, and human rights violations. Another factor is will power of Malaysian citizens, a study showed that greater Malaysian awareness of environmental issues did necessarily correlate with increased positive action to help address issues such a recycling and pollution.

The main driver behind citizen action, cost. If a positive action, such as reducing water consumption, led to a reduction in cost for an individual then they would do something about it. If it was less tangible though, action was not as likely. In striving to achieve the SDGs, Malaysia will need to factor these issues into its strategy.

"Ecosia" is a web search engine (just like Google) that lends a helping hand to our environment. It donates 80% of its surplus income to non-profit organizations that focus on reforestation and conservation. Amazing, right?

Imagine planting a tree for every 45 searches you perform. Yes, a real tree!

Most importantly, it is a trusted website. They publish their monthly financial reports and tree planting receipts. This way you can hold them accountable while we go on our journey to a reforested world.

How does it work?

"ECOSIA"

"FOREST" APP

Next up, a productivity application called "Forest". As students living in 2018, getting your work done instead of scrolling through your social media takes a lot of willpower.

The "Forest" app will get your studying session under control. Each focus session gives you coins. When you earn 2,500 coins, they will also plant a REAL tree for you.

How does it work?

- Whenever you want to focus on your work, plant a tree.

- In the next 30 mins, the tree will grow while you are working.

- The tree will be killed if you leave the app.

- The harder you work (longer time), the lusher your forest is.

Last but not least, "Refresh & Gogreen" app. Many people are not sure about how to start living a sustainable lifestyle. With this app, you will be guided on how to green your life. In a week, you will be given tasks, such as "Only wash when you have full load (washing machine)." It will also explain briefly "how" and "why" it affects the environment.

Your progress will be tracked on your personal "tree" in the app. For the green tasks that you completed, the leaves on the tree will turn green.

"REFRESH & GOGREEN" APP

Nebbett's Nature Nuggets The Importance of Being Wrong November is a time of change for Malaysian wildlife, as migratory birds arrive, or pass through on their way elsewhere. The last few weeks have seen the return of the blue-tailed bee-eaters to KTJ. You’ll spot them swooping above the lake and rugby pitch, catching insects, and perched on the Naquiyuddin TV aerial and hockey goals. If you look up the right time, you might also spot a migratory raptor (bird of prey), such as a black-shouldered kite or black baza, passing overhead. The one I see most often at KTJ is the oriental honey-buzzard, which likes to hang out in the trees by the basketball court. I’ve taken many photos of them flying overhead, and a couple of weeks ago, I thought I’d photographed another one, circling over the boarding houses.

I regularly upload photos to the iNaturalist website for help with identification. (So KTJ is now one of the best-documented locations for wildlife in Malaysia on the site!)

This time, though, when I added my honey-buzzard identification, I soon got a message from someone else, saying that it was actually a changeable hawk-eagle. I looked at my photo again, Googled the hawk-eagle, compared the two, and sure enough, they were right!

More and more I’ve noticed that if I upload a photo of something I’m not sure of, and don’t make a guess as to what it is, it’s less likely that someone will help than if I have a guess and get it wrong: people in general are much more likely to correct an error than volunteer information.

My mistakes are many, but I’ve learned that what I thought was a yellow-bellied prinia, was actually a plain-throated sunbird, and what I thought might be a plain-throated sunbird in “brighter mating season plumage” was actually a ruby- cheeked sunbird – a species that wasn’t in either of my guidebooks. If I hadn’t taken a risk with my wrong answers, no one would have helped me find the right ones.

In the spirit of the lessons learned, by our KTJ naturalist Mr Nebbett, we can take note of the words of one of the world's most successful businessman, Richard Branson:

“You don't learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.”

We Meat Again Understanding the impact of our love of meat and the benefits of being a flexitarian.

A meaty topic to chew over: A little perspective: We have 7.7 billion people on this earth. Likely to rise to 9bn by 2050.

More and more of this population are being pulled out of poverty and becoming wealthier, with a higher life expectancy and the ability to afford more food. That sounds pretty positive and it is, but with increasing wealth comes a change in diet. A diet with more meat.

Meatopia: We are in love with meat.

Since 1961 our meat consumption has risen 4-5 fold and where is the greatest growth of consumption and production? ASIA. So what? You may ask, but our increasing meat consumption is having such a catastrophic impact on our planet it is now a global crisis.

Here are some of its impacts: Water scarcity: Did you know it takes 15,000 liters of water to grow 1kg of beef. That's 15,000 litre bottles of water! That beef burger you love, 2500 litres.

What about Malaysia's beloved chicken?

That's 4,300 litres, much better but still pretty huge!

70% of the world's water use goes into agriculture. This puts particular pressure on people in water scarce areas where water is often prioritised for agriculture and big business over the concerns of the poorest and their struggle to afford increasing water prices.

What about the huge impact agriculture has on those areas downstream from large agricultural areas such as in the US mid-west. According to National Geographic "About one-tenth of the [Colorado] river's former flow now makes it to Mexico, but most of that is used for farming and cities south of the border." The Colorado River no longer makes it to its mouth in the Gulf of California (in Mexico), it is completely dry, a once flourishing ecosystem, dead.

Ocean dead zones: "Oceans suffocating as huge dead zones quadruple since 1950, scientists warn", according to the Guardian.

Dead zones are areas which are so polluted they are devoid of life due to being oxygendeficient (hypoxia). Often they are covered by huge algal blooms which can lead to mass death of the aquatic life within them (see image).

But how is this associated to meat?

According to The Mighty report on ocean dead zones, large scale meat production and the soy produced for animal feed, is the leading cause. Their intensive farming techniques lead to soil erosion and, through surface run off during rainfall, pesticides and fertilisers are washed into rivers and oceans.

Not only this but manure and animal waste regularly runs off into the water system too.

Example: Tyson Agriculture in Arkansas, USA. They slaughter 35m chickens and 125,000 head of cattle every week, requiring five million acres of corn a year for feed. The Mighty report states that the highest levels of nitrate contamination (from fertilisers, a key cause of ocean dead zones) match with clusters of facilities operated by Tyson.

Deforestation: Something we know all to well about in Malaysia. We may worry more about palm oil plantations but did you know that animal agriculture and the food grown for these animals is one of the leading causes of deforestation?

Animal agriculture is responsible for up to 91% of Amazon destruction and 82% worldwide for rainforest deforestation. Where are the highest loses of rainforest? Malaysia, Congo, Indonesia and Brazil (according to Mongabay website).

Rainforests are home to 50% of the earth's species but only take up 3% of the land. They are vital to our survival as carbon sinks but also in providing new knowledge and ingredients for key medical treatments such as the rosy periwinkle for leukemia.

So the destruction of this environment really is just shooting ourselves in the foot.

Global warming: Did you know that meat production and its byproducts contribute more greenhouse gases, such as methane, than all forms of transport combined? It accounts for 51% of all GHGs and the amount of GHG production by agriculture is expected to rise 80% by 2050. Hello warmer planet...how do you fancy a hotter Malaysia?

But why does this even matter?

You may be asking, why should you care? You're not reliant on the forest, you can afford clean water, you're not affected right?

Wrong. The facts are clear, if we continue to eat meat at the rate we are now, we will see the wholesale destruction of ecosystems, we shall see a rise in GHG emissions which will lead to increasing global temperatures and also more extreme weather. Lets not worry about rising sea levels which are due to significantly impact low lying regions such as Bangladesh, the Maldives, Indonesian islands and large swathes of coastal Malaysia such as Penang. Nor the destruction of rainforest in Borneo, because tourists to Malaysia definitely don't pay to see orangutan.....oh wait.

Meat us in the middle: So does this mean you should give up meat and become a vegetarian or vegan? Well, yes if you want, awesome!

But in reality most of us love meat and to give it up entirely seems unthinkable.

So what are we suggesting?

Become a flexitarian!

This means reducing how much meat you eat every week.

You don't need to eat meat every day, let alone every meal, even in you think yourself a budding body builder or athlete. Mo Farah is a vegetarian and he is the Olympic gold medal holder for both 5km and 10km . Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton is vegan, as is bodybuilder Barny du Plessis. Are you really suggesting you need more protein than this man?

In fact, it has been proven that a plant based diet helps you recover quicker and reduces body fat, cholesterol and blood pressure. You do have to think about where you get your protein from though. Protein can be found in lots of products but some of the best are eggs, chickpeas, lentils, beans, tempeh and nuts. So here is my suggestion. Try eating meat just one meal a day, then maybe just a few times a week. It all adds up and you will be healthier for it.

What are we doing to make KTJ more sustainable?

No more plastic straws!

Yes! We have seen more and more of you using the metal and bamboo smoothie straws.

Awesome.

But as of Term 2 there will be NO more plastic straws in the cafe. Instead, we have bought more metal smoothie straws and some awesome rainbow skinny straws. (please remember though, straws stay in the cafe....don't be a sneaky ratweasel).

Recycling You may not know this but the Sustainability club, with Mr Lance Gerow at the helm, have been snuffling away behind the scenes trying to properly overhaul our recycling system. They are ironing out some of the issues with collection and recycling.

Increasing the number of bins for recycling and increasing your awareness of what can and cannot be recycled. Watch this space!

Conservation Week Get ready ladies and gentlemen for a week of super events. We will be raising awareness about the conservation efforts around the world, particularly in Malaysia. We will also be doing some fundraising for a number of groups including Traffic and Lang Tengah Turtle Research. We will be having competitions, sustainability merch. sales and most importantly a CARNIVAL. Keep an eye on What's On and KTJ insta for more details next term.

Getting Wasted THE WASTAGE SCANDAL AT KTJ. Rosa Diaz investigates.

The level of food waste at KTJ is something criminal. Every day students (and teachers) decide they need to pile their plate full of food, only to realise their eyes are bigger than their stomach.

Who cares? You don't pay any more for wasting food! - We care! If we don't waste as much food, more money can be spent on the quality of ingredients in the canteen. Tasty incentive. Who else cares? The chickens care! You love chicken. Congratulations. That chicken on your plate was once a living animal, next time you just chuck that piece of chicken away, take a second to THINK, did that chicken die for no reason? Don't forget the wasted rice and vegetables I hear you cry! Absolutely, people around the world, including in Malaysia, often go hungry, they struggle to afford food. Sometimes we just need a little perspective.

O, but it doesn't matter what I do, me wasting less won't make a difference!

Wrong, sack off your lazy attitude. You can be awesome.

You can make the change! If we all reduce how much we waste, then we will need to purchase less. Which means if we purchase less, the farmers will produce fewer chickens market forces people. KTJ is a big school, your actions do make a change. - If you are wondering why you should do this, have a read of 'We Meat Again' or have a watch of Cowspiracy or The End of the Line.

So what can you do?

1: Take less than you think you need.

2: If you are still hungry, go back for more.

According to SWCorp Malaysia, a government agency dealing with solid waste, Malaysians waste 15,000 tonnes of food everyday. 60% of which is avoidable.

PRAISE FOR EDWARD SINGER | BOOK AWARD 2014

On Sunday 2nd December, LEO and Sustainability club members teamed up to go litter picking in Seremban 2.

With an early rise, leaving at 7am, we ventured forth to pick up litter and make the environment a cleaner and more pleasant place.

Organised by LEO club member Euan, we managed to collect 5 large bin bags full of rubbish from just one stretch of pavement. We also managed to destroy most of the litter picking equipment through trying to collect so much!

Most of the litter was straws, bottles and noodle pots but there were also things such as wiring, a lone flip flop, a nappy (we left that alone) and sheets of plastic. We all came away from it proud of the effort everyone had put in but also sad that some people chose to chuck, rather than think and be a responsible human being and find a bin.

We hope our actions made Seremban 2 that bit more pleasant and perhaps made people who saw us, more aware of what we can all do to look after our environment.

How often do you recycle? a) Always. b) When I remember to and if It’s convenient. c) Never. I hate the planet.

How often do you eat meat? a) Never. I’m a vegan/vegetarian and I always make sure people know about it. b) I try and have at least a few veggie meals a week. c) I only eat meat. Vegetables are for weaklings.

How carbon intensive is your use of travel? a) I only walk and cycle. The internal combustion engine is the work of the devil. b) I try and walk as much as I can and avoid using the car for short journeys. I fly once or twice a year. c) I only get around using my diesel powered Segway.

How much do you use your A/C? a) Never, I rely on the evaporation of my sweat to keep cool. b) I always turn it off when I do don’t need it. There is after all an irony that using too much A/C causes global warming, which requires more use of A/C… c) I always keep it on. I hate the planet. And all the organisms that call it home.

Do you try to control how much electricity you use? a) I always turn off my appliances at the wall before I leave. I turn lights off before I leave the room as well. I make sure I don’t leave my phone charging when I don’t need to. b)

I turn things off if I remember to.

c) I can only get to sleep if I’ve got the TV on. And the radio. And the laptop. And the washing machine. And the microwave….

Do you try and reduce you water use? a) Always. As the saying goes, “If it’s yellow, let it mellow. If it’s brown, flush it down”. And after a while your body becomes naturally self-cleaning anyway, right? b) I limit how long I spend in the shower and avoid running the taps when cleaning my teeth and shaving. c) I use as much water as I like. It’s not like we’re going to run out, look how much it rains!

What’s that? Other parts of the world face desertification and acute food shortages, leading to wars and migration crises? Pfft, I don’t live there, not my problem der

Do you limit how much you use plastics? a) The only time I use plastics is to create sculptures made out of reclaimed plastic to make artistic comments about how we use too much plastic. b) I use metal straws. I have a reusable cup. I also have a T-shirt that says “Stop using plastics!” c) Everything I own is made from plastic. Including my soul.

How much fast food do you eat? a) I never eat fast food. M*cD*n*lds, K*C, and B*rg*r K*ng are the work of the devil. b) I try not to eat fast food, but that’s mainly for health reasons rather than because intensive cattle ranching is destroying the Amazon rainforest. c) Mmmmmmmmmmmmm, I love the taste of intensively farmed beef, so stringy and bland! Plus, the milkshakes are flavoured with the tears of displaced Amazonian tribespeople. Yummy!

Do you ever drop litter? a) Never. In fact, I follow other people around just in case they drop litter. The restraining orders are worth it. b) I don’t drop litter. Only the morally backward drop litter. c) I love dropping litter. It’s not a problem because someone keeps following me, picking up the litter I drop. Result!

Do you ever buy cheap disposable clothing? a) Never. I only buy renewably sourced and fair trade clothing. And I look fabulous. I give my old clothes to charity shops b) I buy a mix of ethical clothing and disposable clothing. I’m more interested in looking good, but if I can help save the planet as well, then it’s all good. I like second hand clothing if its good. c) I sometimes get though three t-shirts in day. Fashion changes so quickly these days.

Besides, if the children making these clothes weren’t in a sweatshop, who knows what mischief they’d be getting up to?

Mostly A. – Congratulations, if only more people were like you! That way human civilisation might last beyond the end of this millennium. Not a joke! We really do face an existential threat to our way of life!

Mostly B. – You are well intentioned and some of the things you are doing are going to help make a difference. But is it enough? Maybe try and make one or two changes to your lifestyle, change some of those “b” answers to “a” and encourage your friends to do the same. Every little helps!

Mostly C. – Your reckless and selfish actions will doom us all. Thanks. (Slow hand clap).
