English Literature

About the course

Learners, following the Cambridge International AS and A Level English syllabus, will study a range of texts in the three main forms: prose, poetry and drama. Set texts are offered from a range of different periods and cultures. Learners will develop skills of reading and analysis of texts, and are encouraged to undertake wider reading to aid understanding of the texts studied. They will learn the skills of effective and appropriate communication, including the ability to discuss the critical context of texts.

2: Prose and Unseen

Candidates answer two questions:

-One question from Section A Poetry

-One question from Section B Drama

Candidates answer two questions:

-One question from Section A Prose

-One question from Section B Unseen

Candidates answer two questions:

-One question from Section A Shakespeare

-One question from Section B Drama.

4: Pre and Post-1900

Poetry and Prose

Candidates answer two questions:

-One question from Section A Pre-1900 Poetry and Prose

-One question from Section B Post-1900 Poetry and Prose. Candidates respond to both a poetry and a prose text.

Characteristics of successful students

First and foremost, a student should have an enthusiasm for reading and an interest in different kinds of literary texts. An ability to question and think critically is also an asset. As the assessment is largely based on the ability to write critical essays, a student should have a sound mastery of the basics of English grammar and punctuation, and should show clarity in written expression.

Minimum entry requirements/prior learning

International curriculum: at least B in either IGCSE English First Language or O Level English Language. A grading of at least a B in English Literature is also strongly recommended. Malaysia Curriculum: At least an A grade in English SPM. Students who have not previously studied English Literature will be considered for admission to the course, but a good pass in English is essential.

Further studies and careers

Essential for studying Literature or English at university. A Level English Literature will also help equip you with the analytical skills you need to study Humanities, Social Sciences, Psychology or Law. A Level Literature is a good base for any degree course, and will demonstrate breadth of skills if you are applying for STEM related subjects.
