DAVID GEFFEN HALL AT LINCOLN CENTER
Designed by Max Abromovitz in 1962, the New York Philharmonic’s home at Lincoln Center recently underwent a truly transformative renovation. Addressing several acoustical issues, which have long plagued the space, as well as creating a more intimate experience between the audience members and the performers were at the heart of this David Geffen Hall redesign. Kohler Ronan was delighted to have collaborated with Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, Diamond Schmitt Architects, and acoustics and theater design consultants Akustiks and Fisher Dachs Associates, respectively. For our part, Kohler Ronan enhanced the space with a completely redesigned MEP infrastructure and new system distribution which allows for increased flexibility and versatility within the hall.
Though the shell of this iconic arts facility remained intact, the interior concert hall and its public spaces required infrastructure, acoustic, and aesthetic improvements. The proscenium was eliminated, while the stage was moved forward by 25 feet, the seating was reduced, and the main lobby doubled in size. The re-envisioned space now incorporates a welcome center, destination eatery, 50-foot-wide LED media streaming wall, and reconfigured Grand Promenade. There is even a Sidewalk Studio to allow for small-scale performances, rehearsals, and community gatherings.
Building systems include new air-handling equipment and redesigned air distribution, incorporating measures to improve ventilation throughout the building. Also within the project’s scope was extensive CFD analysis of the main hall to optimize airflows, acoustics, and thermal comfort in various configurations. The project team rose to meet a rather significant challenge and completed this extensive renovation nearly two years ahead of schedule. The beloved cultural landmark reopened to rave reviews in October 2022.
