Zak Architecture created a crisp, symmetrical plan in its signature contemporary Hawaiian style, while the Douglas Durkin Design team simultaneously developed a rich palette of the finest architectural and interior design materials.
At this unique Kohanaiki residence, Durkin drew inspiration from traditional Hawaiian kapa cloth patterns, thoughtfully incorporating motifs from indigenous Hawaiian culture alongside influences from Pacific cultures such as Tonga and Samoa.
Zak’s work embraces a modern tropical classic style, allowing for the seamless integration of exotic materials and innovative design methods. Walls of disappearing glass doors open effortlessly to the outdoors, while expansive windows and clerestory assemblies fill the home’s collection of pavilions with natural light and create cooling tradewind breezes throughout the day and night.
Some of the finest craftspeople in the United States were commissioned to create bespoke furnishings throughout the home, including exquisite hand-tufted silk and wool carpets from V’Soske of New York, hand-printed fabrics by Pintura Studios of New York, custom-designed and hand-carved plantation teak beds, bedside tables, coffee tables, and outdoor furniture suites crafted by Warisan of Indonesia, Tom Sellars Woodworking, and Luis Rossi of San Francisco, as well as a sophisticated custom hanging light fixture by Aqua Creations.
