Visitors can walk chronologically through exhibits that tell some of the stories of Kodiak and its people beginning around 1808 when the Russian American Magazin was built and running through to modern times.

1780-1880s | Russian Colony in an Alutiiq Land 1780-1880

The magazin has been at the heart of Kodiak’s history for over 200 years. During times of Russian colonization the building served as the Russian-American store, the center of commerce and control.

1867-1940s | Kodiak Becomes American

In 1867, the United States purchased Alaska from Russia. Kodiak went from experiencing Russian colonization to Americanization.

1911-1948 | Erskine House

The Erskine House served as a community gathering place throughout the family’s tenure in the building. 1867-1940

1939-1945

On June 6, 1912 Mt. Nova Rupta sent a cloud of ash to Kodiak. Kodiak residents were saved by a boat, U.S. Revenue Cutter Manning that sailed the town out to sea for fresh air. You can still see the layer of ash in Kodiak’s soil today.

1939-1945 | World War II

During WWII, Kodiak went from a sleepy fishing village to a bustling city.

1964

On March 27, 1964, a 9.2 magnitude earthquake shook Alaska. The damage from the earthquake lead to Kodiak’s downtown being almost completely rebuilt. Kodiak Historical Society, KHS P-368-10-1-g

The fishing industry remains the foundation of Kodiak’s culture and economy. Kodiak is also home to the largest Coast Guard base in the world.

The Kodiak

Real Estate Market Article Courtesy of Grant Shields, Alaska 1 Realty

The Island of Kodiak, Alaska, is home to about 12,611 residents based on last year’s population estimates from Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development. This Island community boasts unparalleled world class fishing and hunting. It is home to one of the largest Coast Guard bases in the United States with a group of 2,000 service members and their families. Commercial Fishing, Canneries, XtraTuf boots, and Grunden’s rain gear, are synonymous with the Kodiak community and all of the above play an integral part in the local economy and Real Estate market. Kodiakan’s and Coasties, as referred to by our locals, mingle together in business, politics, and play. It is not unusual for Coast Guard personnel to buy a home in the community and when their tour is up in Kodiak to just rent the property out until they return, whether that be for another tour of duty or retirement! With the Island’s gorgeous mountains, remote beaches, trails, 4-wheeling, kayaking, boating, and yes, “fishing” can you blame them? Many Coast Guard buyers as well as investors or second home buyers that have purchased in Kodiak have seen their properties appreciate in a steady fashion with impressive returns if sold. Kodiak also has a viable rental market due to seasonal jobs and annual projects that keep rental inventory in demand. The island has options for property management services if folks choose to go that route. The local Real Estate market is serviced by local Realtors that keep abreast of the latest technology and update their education continually to provide professionalism and ethics to Kodiak buyers and sellers. One noted concern in the Kodiak Real Estate market can be lack of inventory. When looking to buy in Kodiak it is wise to begin your search early. Markets can fluctuate rather quickly and with recent trends and low interest rates it would be wise to utilize the talents of a Real Estate professional when buying or selling a home.

Let’s take a look at the Islands market trends and sales over the last several years to date to get a picture of the local Kodiak market. This information can be formulated by researching the multiple listing service and by doing so one will see a steady upward climb regarding property value. The medium sales price in 2016 for a typical 3-to4-bedroom home about 1800-2000sf, with 2 bathrooms and a garage was selling around $320,000. That same type of home in 2018 was selling for $350,000 which resulted in an appreciation value of 3% per year. In looking at 2019 homes with those similar features were pushing into the$ 370,000 to $375,000 Price range and in 2020 as noted with the historic low interest rates those same types of homes were approaching the $400,000 dollar price range. Location, condition, and amenities would also play an important role in the value of your property. If you are lucky enough to be moving to this gorgeous Island in the Pacific, make sure to reach out to one of the local Real Estate professionals to guide you in researching the Kodiak market for your perfect home. We will look forward to seeing you at the local brewery or catching the “big one” on our local rivers. Until then, fair winds and smooth sailing!

The Alutiiq People Article Courtesy of the Alutiiq Museum

W

HO ARE THE ALUTIIQ PEOPLE?

The Alutiiq are Kodiak’s first settlers, an Alaska Native people closely related to the Yup’ik of southwestern Alaska. Today there are about 1,800 Alutiiq people in the Kodiak region. They live in the City of Kodiak and six rural villages—Akhiok, Karluk, Larsen Bay, Old Harbor, Ouzinkie, and Port Lions.

H

OW LONG HAVE ALUTIIQ PEOPLE LIVED ON KODIAK?

Alutiiq ancestors came to Kodiak more than 7,500 years ago. Archaeologists believe they paddled to the island from the Alaska Peninsula and that the modern Native community is descended from these first residents. When Russian traders arrived in 1764, there were about 10,000 Alutiiq people living in the region.

W

HAT IS KODIAK’S TRADITIONAL LANGUAGE?

Kodiak’s Native language is called Alutiiq or Sugtstun. This language was heavily suppressed in the twentieth century and there are just a few fluent speaker left. Today, Alutiiq Elders are teaching the language to younger generations. In addition to English, many Alutiiq people speak some Russian, the language of the Russian Orthodox Church. 22 | 2022 KODIAK RELOCATION GUIDE

W

HAT RESOURCES DO ALUTIIQ PEOPLE HARVEST?

The Alutiiq are a maritime people who have always made their living from the sea. Alutiiq ancestors built sturdy boats from driftwood and animal skins and used them to harvest sea mammals, fish, and birds to feed their families. Most Alutiiq families continue to harvest wild foods, both for the dinner table and the commercial fishing industry.

W

HAT ARE THE ALUTIIQ ARTS?

The arts are a central part of Alutiiq culture and one of the important ways that Native people express their identities. Kodiak is home to many talented Alutiiq artists who practice beading, carving, ceramics, drawing, boat building, painting, photography, skin sewing, and weaving. Kodiak also has active Native dance groups, who perform with songs, instruments, and choreography.

H

OW CAN I LEARN MORE ABOUT ALUTIIQ CULTURE & HISTORY?

The Alutiiq Museum in downtown Kodiak offers exhibits, educational programs, events, and publications that tell the Alutiiq story. People of all heritages are invited to explore Alutiiq traditions at the museum and to shop in the museum store. Popular events include Craft Saturday—a monthly art activity for families, a Holiday Bazaar, and opportunities to volunteer on archaeological research.

HAT IS THE ALUTIIQ ANCESTORS’ MEMORIAL?

The memorial is a public park in downtown Kodiak created by the City and the Alutiiq Museum to honor the Alutiiq people. Located at the corner of Kashevaroff Street and Mill Bay Road, the park offers seating, educational panels, and a place to remember community members.

Over 150 people turned out to the Coast Guard Appreciation Dinner on Feb. 4, according to the Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce Jena Lowmaster. The dinner is an annual event hosted by the Chamber of Commerce as a way to show appreciation for the Coast Guard service members on the island, Lowmaster said. Sixty-six members of the Coast Guard attended the dinner, including Vice Admiral Michael McAllister and Rear Admiral Nathan Moore, according to Lowmaster. At the event, there were multiple proclamations and letters of support sent in from local and state government agencies that expressed appreciation toward the Coast Guard, according to Lowmaster. “The evening also showed off the best of everything Kodiak has to offer,” Lowmaster said. She went on to say, “This was a chance for our community to thank members of the Coast Guard who are involved in so many aspects of our community, all while serving Alaska and the rest of the country.”

Creatures on Land

Keep your eyes peeled for the small, cunning, and quick Ermine! They are white in the winter and brown with a white chest in the warmer months. Silver, Red, and Cross Foxes are also abundant throughout Kodiak and may even be casing our resident Hares.

Be Bear, aware!

Remember When Walking through the woods, make noise and sing this song: “Hey bear, ho bear. What you gonna do? I’m here, you’re there. I’m just passing Through. Hey bear, ho bear. It’s such a lovely day. This is your land, I understand, so I’ll be on my way!”

Hey Bear Ho Bear Song & book by Stacy Studebaker

Creatures with Hooves Roosevelt Elk can be found sparsely throughout Afognak and Raspberry Islands. Watch for the small Sitka BlackTailed Deer as you drive on the road system, and go shed hunting for their antlers in the late winter and early spring. Keep an eye out for the Buffalo herd on your way to Surfers Beach. Just look up into the peaks of rocky mountains to find the white Mountain Goats. Venture out to the Southwest side of the island for a glimpse of Reindeer wandering about.

If adventure is in your soul we can take you on an unforgettable trip

There’s a whole ocean full of them! Kodiak is fortunate to have five varieties of Salmon in addition to Halibut, Lingcod, Dolly Varden, and Trout for the avid fisherman. Some of the non-fishing creatures favorites in the Kodiak Area are the transient Killer Whales, and seasonal Humpbacks, Fin, and Gray Whales. Looking for something of the furry variety, Kodiak is also home to Sea and River Otters, Sea Lions, Seals, and many many more!

The Pillar Mountain Wind Project Article Courtesy of KEA

The Kodiak community is powered by Kodiak Electric Association, Inc. (KEA); a locally owned and operated electric cooperative that has been serving the community since 1941. KEA currently is 100% renewable. The six wind turbines that stand proudly atop Pillar Mountain are able to generate around twenty percent of the baseload. The remaining eighty percent is harnessed through three 11 Megawatt (MW) hydro turbines that are fed by Terror Lake. The wind and hydropower are supported by two separate energy storage solutions, two 1 MW flywheels, and two 1.5 MW battery banks. The systems all work in conjunction to provide reliable power to the people. The Pillar Mountain Wind Project consists of 6 1.5 MW wind turbines. They are each 80 meters tall and they have a rotor swept area of 77 meters. The first three were installed in 2009 and the second three were installed in 2012. Previously, a good portion of the city’s energy was generated using diesel engines. These engines remain connected to the grid as a backup in case of an emergency. Given the natural splendor of the island, KEA’s transition to renewable generation was a widely supported effort. There are few locations worldwide that can boast about their energy being generated through 100% renewable resources, all accomplished without raising rates to the members.

The Coast Guard in Kodiak

Being stationed on Kodiak, a beautiful island approximately 250 miles southwest of Anchorage leads to some amazing experiences for most who are assigned here. Life on Alaska’s “Emerald Isle” can be wonderful and wild. Summers are full of long periods of daylight, hiking, fishing, hunting, and surfing, biking, boating, and exploring the second largest island in the United States. Winters on “The Rock” bring darkness, heavy wind and rain, and occasional bouts of ice and snow, but we still find ways to have fun! If you’re bringing a family, Coast Guard Base Kodiak is the home of “Rock Solid Support” to all Coast Guard units on the island and here at Base Kodiak we offer an exceptional array of opportunities. On-base facilities include a commissary, exchange, movie theater, bowling alley, and a modern gym with an indoor swimming pool. Off base there is a Safeway and Wal-Mart approximately eight miles away. Low crime rates, good schools, a close-knit community, and plenty of year-round activities make it so that many families who get stationed here don’t want to leave. In addition to the Base, there are several large commands located on Kodiak. Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak is a Seventeenth Coast Guard District (D17) unit. The Air Station was commissioned as an Air Detachment on April 17, 1947, with one PBY Catalina aircraft, seven pilots, and 30 crewmen. It represented the first permanent Coast Guard aviation resource in Alaska. It is the largest Coast Guard command in D17 and the entire Pacific Area (PACAREA). The present complement of HC-130Hs, MH-60Ts, MH-65Ds support the mission and save lives. Coast Guard Cutter ALEX HALEY (WMEC 39), The Bulldog of the Bering, is a former Navy rescue and salvage ship. The ALEX HALEY is uniquely suited for a wide array of missions in “The Final Frontier” of Alaska. Primarily focused on homeland security, search and rescue, and international/domestic fisheries enforcement, the crew has operated throughout the Bering Sea and the Aleutian Islands, into the western Pacific and Sea of Japan, and north into the Arctic Circle. As the largest Medium Endurance Cutter in the Coast Guard’s fleet, it boasts a stable design that supports a better ride in heavy seas. Coast Guard Cutter CYPRESS (WLB 210) , The Aleutian Keeper and its crew support the Aids to Navigation mission in Alaska, an experience of a lifetime. 46 | 2022 KODIAK RELOCATION GUIDE

COMMERCIAL FISHING THE KEY TO KODIAK’S ECONOMY Ar ticle Cour tesy of Alaska Groundsh Data Bank

©John Cannon

KODIAK,

situated in the middle of some of the richest fishing grounds in the world, is very much a fishing town – there are over 600 fishing boats homeported here. Large-scale commercial fisheries have been established around the Kodiak Archipelago since the first Salmon cannery was built in Karluk in 1882 and every business in Kodiak benefits from commercial fishing dollars. Its commercial fisheries are among the most diverse in the state and most of the processing workers who work in the canneries live in town – contrary to many commercial fishing towns that import seasonal workers. Stroll along cannery row adjacent to the harbor and you’ll find five major seafood processing facilities that process and export all the seafood landed by the local fishing fleet: Trident Seafoods, North Pacific Seafoods, Pacific Seafood, Silver Bay Seafoods, and Ocean Beauty Icicle Seafoods. Kodiak consistently ranks as one of the top three fishing ports in the United States for the volume of fish landed. 397.2 million pounds were delivered into Kodiak in 2019, up from 390 million pounds the year before. The 2019 ex-vessel value of all fish coming into Kodiak was $119.9 million, up from $104 million in 2018 (rank for value is usually within the top 4 or 5 US ports, but dropped to sixth in 2019).

There’s never a lack of seafood to be found in Kodiak. And recent years have seen seaweed (kelp) being added to the mix of seafood products processed in Kodiak. Innovative seafood products coming out of Kodiak also include pollock noodles (worth a try!). 60 | 2022 KODIAK RELOCATION GUIDE

Salmon (all five species can be found here but pink salmon returns are highest in volume) has traditionally been the mainstay of Kodiak’s fishing fleet but many other species are brought to town all year long by trawlers, pot vessels, longliners, and jig boats including pollock, cod, sablefish, halibut, sole and flounder, rockfish, crab, herring, and sea cucumbers. Almost all of the commercial fisheries are certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council.

A

Living From the Sea

Kodiak Island lies in the Gulf of Alaska, 100 miles south of the Kenai Peninsula and 40 miles east of the Alaska Peninsula. A hundred miles long and fifty miles wide, the island was first inhabited by people who arrived in skin covered kayaks from western Alaska about 7,500 years ago.

Russian explorer Vitus Bering and his crew were the first Europeans to see Kodiak Island, in 1741. Bering saw lots of sea otters, and because sea otter fur was prized for hats and coats in Europe and china, Russian fur traders soon arrived from Siberia. Lacking the hunting skills necessary to catch the animals themselves, the Russians used violence and starvation to force Kodiak’s native Alutiiq people to do the hunting for them, and also delivered European diseases, all of which resulted in the near extermination of Kodiak’s indigenous people. By the mid-1800s the sea otters had been hunted nearly to extinction too, and with the economic engine for their Alaskan colony gone, the Russians sold Alaska to the U.S. in 1867. In 1864, just three years before the Russians sold Alaska, Americans began using a revolutionary new technology, hermetically sealed cans, to pack salmon on the Sacramento River in California. By the 1870s, American fishermen and canners had arrived in Southeast Alaska and in 1882 built the first cannery at the mouth of the Karluk River, on the southwest coast of Kodiak Island. Kodiak’s canning industry grew explosively and by 1889, four million salmon a year were being canned on Kodiak. Alaska’s fisheries were managed by the Federal Bureau of Fisheries, which was heavily influenced by corporate canneries head quartered in San Francisco and Seattle. Driven by the desire for short term profit, the canneries pushed for lenient fishing regulations, which by the late 1850s led to a near collapse of Alaska’s salmon runs. Partly in response to the decline of their salmon runs, Alaskans pushed for statehood, and when they got it in 1959, formed the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, which began managing salmon based strictly on science. The runs were gradually rebuilt, and salmon harvests are now at historic highs across the state, providingjobs for thousands of fishermen and processing workers every summer. 64 | 2022 KODIAK RELOCATION GUIDE

In the early 1960s, Kodiak fishermen also began fishing king crabs, a resource which had not been previously eaten much by Americans. Canny marketing drove consumer demand however, and an modern fishing industry was born. A new shrimp fishery also came online in the 1960s and Kodiak boomed with hundreds of boats and fishermen bringing millions of dollars a year into the town. In the early 1980s both fisheries collapsed for reasons which are still debated, but which likely include overfishing and changing ocean conditions. Crab fishing continues every winter in the Bering Sea, and Kodiak fishermen fish “Out West,” and in the Gulf of Alaska for cod, pollock, halibut, black cod, herring, rockfish and salmon. Kodiak remains one of the top three American ports for value of fish landed. In the 1970s and 1980s five or ten Kodiak fishermen a year were sometimes lost each year, mostly in extreme winter sea conditions. Better safety equipment and training have decreased the loss of life dramatically however, and in some recent years, not a single fishermen has been lost at sea anywhere in Alaska. Commercial fishing is hard work, but hundreds of Kodiak fishermen continue to make their living from the sea, driven by a desire to work honestly and independently in a pristine and wild place, just as the first people who paddled ashore here did, 7,500 years ago.
