Pierre School District required a comprehensive look at all four of its existing elementary schools. Following the publishing of a facility study report, the District opted to build a brand new elementary school that addressed the community’s future growth needs, was fiscally responsible and aided in the fulfilment of the District’s mission.

The

project

is

located

on

a

10

acre

site

in

northeastern

Pierre.

The

project

is

60,000

square

feet

and

accommodates

400

students.

The plan is designed for intuitive circulation, a compact footprint, and easy expansion. The administration office is centrally located for inherent security and supervision, allowing controlled access for the gym/ commons or classroom wing for after-hours community use. All classrooms have access to natural light and views, with the central library suite lit by 360-degree clerestory windows. Building systems include masonry walls with continuous insulation, high-efficiency mechanical system with ice storage, low-flow plumbing fixtures and LED lighting. Classrooms are optimized for varying needs of each age group while maintaining flexibility to accommodate fluctuations in sections per grade level in the future.

The compact plan along with efficient site circulation and multipurpose playground helped to limit grading and retaining wall costs on the steeply sloping site. The restrained exterior palette is primarily red brick, intersected by a precast concrete commons/ gymnasium volume and accented by metal paneled canopies to highlight student entries.

Horizontal banding references the expansive prairie surroundings and brings a child-sized scale to the building.
