Built in 1887 on the east bank of the Big Sioux River, the Illinois Central Depot originally served the early bustling commu1890-91

nity of Sioux Falls, including the local quarry trade, moving tons of quartzite to Sioux Falls and other metropolitan areas around the Midwest. The building itself was built from locally quarried stone accompanied by

slate, copper and ornate cast iron columns. After many remodelings and differing uses, the restored building will again help serve its community by housing the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation.

A rude addition was torn down on the south side opening views to the depot from the entry drive. Efforts were made to respect the historic architecture through restoration of the original window frames and sashes and masonry repointing. Asphalt shingles and sheet metal flashings were replaced with slate and copper while infill paving, paint and extraneous trims were stripped away and replaced with appropriate materials to reveal the building’s original beauty.

The depot had been severely cut-up over the years, losing most of its original interior materials. The design removed the warren of small interior spaces, exposing a key area of quartzite which helped provide vertical and horizontal organization to the layout. Subtle white hues and simple lighting contrast with the exposed stone and reclaimed wood floors to develop a sense of spaciousness in a very small building.
