The Sioux Falls Regional Airport’s recent 3-year expansion and renovation roots the airport in its place. Improving on the original 1970 structure and 1990 addition and remodel included renovating and expanding the ticketing and check-in counter area, ground floor gift shop and upper concourse, adding a second floor restaurant, and redesigning the airport’s parking operations greatly improving the driver and pedestrian experience. Cues and inspiration were taken from the area and can be seen in the undulating canopy, inspired by river falls and the gently rolling hills along the Sioux River from which Sioux Falls gets its name. Quartzite which replaced non-native granite accents, and native landscaping is used to reduce storm water run-off adjacent to the building. The runway side of the exterior features angled mullions referencing aircraft flight patterns on take-off and landing.

The expansion provides space for two new baggage handling systems and creates a secure area for baggage screening to take place outside of the public concourse. The airline ticketing offices and counters are also reconfigured and expanded. The public ticketing area is increased to provide more queuing space and allow for improved passenger flow.
