Originally built in 1988, the administration building on the Children’s Home Society campus no longer met the needs of the growing organization.

This three phase project - addition, then two areas of renovation - adds much needed office, therapy and conference space.

An important project goal was to complement the existing architecture of the campus with an addition that addresses expanding administrative and foster care program needs.

The addition, angled toward views of a pond on the campus, complements the existing building.

A link between the existing building and the addition is constructed of exposed cedar structure, floor to ceiling windows, and incorporates a gallery showcasing the history of CHS. The ceiling/roof of the link/lobby are kept low to provide a transition between the masses of the original building and the addition. The link is enclosed primarily in glass to differentiate it from the adjacent solid masses.

The newly constructed gazebo at the front of the addition delineates the new entrance, while the deck in the back visually and functionally connects the building with the nearby pond.

The new board room was designed to provide views of the campus’ dramatic landscape and pond. Additionally, the board room accommodates video conferencing which facilitates collaboration with the CHS Rapid City Campus.

New training rooms were configured flexibly to accommodate community programs, small group meetings, and presentations to large audiences.

A fire suppression system was added through out the building to enhance safety, and an elevator was added within the addition to make the building fully accessible.

Overall, the use of light, materials, simplicity of form, flexibility and a respect for the original building are the key elements of the design.
