HELLO GRAZIE, DANKE, MERCI, TACK, GRACIAS, TERIMA KASIH There are a million ways to say thanks, but truly we mean it – thank you! The support we have received for our little magazine has been overwhelming. It’s been a crazy journey to get here, but one we are so happy to be on. The first edition was six months in the making - a lot of dreaming, planning, then creating (mixed with some slight stressing) finally saw the April edition at the printers. We hit send and then exhaled. Kununurra Sun then arrived in town and there was a flurry to open the boxes, hearts racing with excitement that our little dream had become a reality. We can’t tell you how exciting it was to hold the physical magazine after staring at Google Docs for weeks! Then came the nerves again, it was time to put Kununurra Sun out to you all! To deliver copies to businesses we hoped would support us, and to share with a community we hoped would read along, have conversations with friends about us, then look forward to the next edition. We were completely blown away by the positive comments, the messages of support across social media and the advertising enquiries we received in the days after sharing Kununurra Sun to the area. This magazine is for all of us, so while we put the words and images to paper, it is you as the community that brings it all to life. Thank you all for the support so far and for coming on this wild ride with us. Here’s to all the fun that May will bring! THE KNX SUN TEAM xxx Kununurra Sun acknowledges the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of this nation. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands throughout the Kimberley and in particular the Miriwoong Gajerrong people of Kununurra and surrounding areas where we live, work and welcome visitors from afar.

Camping - it's in tents

It’s the sound of cicadas crackling as the sun goes down, the sizzle of bacon on the BBQ and cool breeze flowing through the mozzie net of your swag. It’s the ashy, burnt toast, the sand in your shoes and that slight headache from too many wines the night before. It’s the uninterrupted starry night sky, the long chats around a campfire and the moment you realise you forgot toilet paper. It’s camping season. Words by: Jess Buchan

If you’re new to town, or one of those eager participants who heads along purely for the excitement factor and secretly doesn’t understand any of the rodeo lingo – then this is the guide for you.

Let’s be honest, not a lot of us are rodeo experts – so we’ve put together a quick guide to make sure you’ve got all the lingo down pat so you’ll sound like an old pro.

BREAKING THE BARRIER When a contestant rides through, or breaks the barrier before it is released. Breaking the barrier adds a penalty of ten seconds to the contestant’s time.

OUT THE BACKDOOR When the rider is thrown over the back end of an animal. FIGHTING BULL The kind of bull that you would like to give your mother-in-law. CHASING THE CANS The rodeo nickname for barrel racing. BARREL RACING Riders must complete a clover leaf pattern as quickly as they can without knocking over a barrel. BULL RIDING The main event! It involves a rider getting on a bucking bull and attempting to stay mounted for 8 seconds while the animal tries to buck off the rider.

PODDY RIDING An event for the kids SADDLE BRONC Riding a bucking horse (bronc) with a specialised saddle BARE BACK Similar to bull riding but without the saddle - essentially the riders are trying to hold onto a suitcase handle and nothing else!

HUNG UP When the cowboy falls off the animal but it still stuck in the rigging or bull rope. BULL FIGHTERS Men on the ground in the arena to ensure riders get off the beasts safely PICK UP MEN Men on horseback who ensure riders get off the broncs safely And finally, if there’s one thing you take away from this guide - never trust a cowboy wearing a black hat! See y’all at the rodeo! 11

Art Straight from the Heart Located 280kms from the closest town, on the edge of the Tanami Desert is a small community, home to just over 300 people called Balgo. Prolific for its creative community members, artwork from this community has exhibited all around the world. Burnt brown landscapes, endless vistas as far as the eye can see and a stillness that can’t be replicated, the parallels between where the artists live and work compared to where their artwork is exhibited couldn’t be greater.

The conception of Love Stories came from a profound moment of love and generosity that Dalton experienced himself, and from there it inspired him to spend two months in the height of COVID to walk the busy streets of the Brisbane CBD asking strangers to share their love story. It’s incredible to think of a single question of ‘Can you please tell me a love story?’ can evoke 333 pages of anecdotes and fables of love. His writing is poetic and heartwarming, with strangers’ stories intertwined with memories of his own. As I devoured the tales between the pages of Love Stories, I learnt that love goes far beyond being just a feeling. Love is pain, love is sharing, love is losing, love is not wanting to do something but doing it anyway. Love can punch you in the gut but also fill you with butterflies. Fresh love is wonderful but so is love that lasts a lifetime. Love isn’t just between people, it’s a companionship between man and dog, a love of a place, a sport, an object. You can love a person just as much as you love a boat or the Fremantle Dockers. It got me thinking about all the love in my life. Like the crushing

The comfort of knowing there’s always someone at the other end of the phone. The shock of losing a friend. The feeling of landing in a new destination with no idea of where to go and that first bite of a
