KNOXVILLE ACADEMY OF MEDICINE

“Thanks for the Memories”

For those of you old enough to remember the late, great comedian Bob Hope, he would sing those words at the end of each of his Specials he did on TV. It is with bittersweet emotions that I let you know my term as a member of the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners has concluded. I was honored to have been twice appointed by our Governor to serve the people of Tennessee and my profession for nearly 9 years. This was in a large part due to the support of the Knoxville Academy of Medicine. Although I am sure I have left off some, I want to thank Sonnie Campbell, Kim Weaver, Dr. David Gerkin, Dr. Jack Lacey and then Vice President of the TMA Board of Trustees and now Sen. Richard Briggs along with Yarnell Beatty and the TMA. I have had the privilege of seeing many changes during my time on the Board. When I started, I was the only member from Knoxville in several years. Before I left, there were 2, the other being our own Dr. Debbie Christiansen. We developed rules regarding telemedicine, developed a policy for physicians returning to clinical practice after not doing so for over 2 years. We simplified CME audits and soon will have in place your CME requirements to coincide

with your renewal. Then in 2018, I was honored by my fellow members to serve as president in 2019 and 2020. Perhaps for me, the biggest achievement during my time was changing our application questions for a new or renewal license to focus on impairment rather than illness. This has encouraged physicians to get help before they needed it and without fearing a discipline on their license. As a result, more physicians are reaching out to organizations such as the Tennessee Medical Foundation for treatment and support. I also am grateful for the support I have received from the KAM. It has been a pleasure to write these articles giving you updates on our work. I thank Danielle Sims, Margaret Maddox and now Karen Greene for frequently giving me an extra week or more to turn in my articles as frequently the deadline was around the time of our meetings. So, as I conclude my last “Update from the BME”, I close with a quote from a doctor Theodur S. Geisel, philosopher and author of 60 books which I am sure you have all read many of them. I am speaking of Dr. Seuss. “Don’t be sad because it is over, be happy that it happened.” - Reeves Johnson, MD

KAMA Corner

By: Nancy Sewell, KAMA President The color of springtime is in the flowers; the color of winter is in the imagination.” Last year at this time, who could have imagined that we would have navigated three in person events so successfully? A September outdoor meeting, an October Gala, and a November in home meeting and demonstration! What a testament to the determination of our KAMA membership to not let circumstances drive our desire to meet, raise money, and learn. Our Starry Night Legacy Gala was a wonderful success! We are grateful to everyone who helped to make it such a special evening. We will be distributing nursing and medical scholarships and making community donations in the spring. We also raised over $17,000 to contribute to New Hopewell Elementary School for their playground renovations.

At our December meeting, we gathered to vote on our Nominating Committee to secure and present a slate of names of eligible members as nominees for each office and directorship. We also had a speaker who encouraged us as to how to Navigate the Holidays with Family. We also hosted a cookie exchange! Finally, a great big thank you to all who gave the gift of scholarship by making a donation to the KAMA scholarship endowments through the Sharing Card. KAMA is committed to improving healthcare in Knoxville and surrounding areas. Providing medical and nursing scholarship awards in perpetuity through endowments, is part of that mission. KAMA looks forward to 2022 as we work toward encouraging one another in our mission. - Nancy Sewell
