PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
KAM KNOXVILLE ACADEMY OF MEDICINE
Burnout. More specifically, physician burnout. A recent study of more than 15,000 physicians in 29 different specialties reported that more than 44% of the physician respondents classified themselves in the “burned out” category. Further, 11% reported they were colloquially depressed and an additional 4% reported being clinically depressed. That’s nearly half of practicing physicians who are struggling with this epidemic! As physicians, we all deal with a tremendous amount of stress associated with our jobs, but burnout begins when we lose the ability to recover during periods of time off. Increased charting, paperwork, EHRs, hospital and insurance bureaucracy, and longer hours spent on these tasks have made finding time for an outlet to rejuvenate and recuperate almost impossible. Burnout leads to lower levels of staff engagement and productivity. Burnout can also negatively influence the patient experience and increase the risk of medical errors. Physicians have the highest rate of suicide of any profession. On average, one doctor commits suicide every day in the United States; more than twice the rate of the general population. Chances are, you have either struggled with symptoms of burnout or know of a colleague who has been affected by these unresolved stressors that disrupt not only physical wellbeing but relationships with family, practice staff, and patients. In an effort to address this growing phenomena among our profession, the Knoxville Academy of Medicine leadership has been developing a program to help members identify the early warning signs of physician burnout and put in place interventions that will assist our physicians in maintaining happy, healthy and productive lifestyles. Beginning this fall, the KAM will begin to roll out a Physician Wellness Initiative to include educational programs, physician vitality initiatives comprised of social events and wellbeing opportunities, and basically a safety net to ensure members receive the support they need to manage the daily grind of practicing medicine. One of the most important aspects of this program is personalized, totally anonymous counseling services for those who are dealing with extreme burnout. Our goal is to get everyone the help they need without the fear associated from discovery by
patients, peers, and employers. We recognize that many of the stressors contributing to burnout cannot completely eliminated. However, we do believe that KAM, as a membership, can stand together and support each other in this quest to maintain balance in our professional and personal lives. We believe as a board that this initiative may be one of the most important membership benefits we will ever launch. Soon, you will receive detailed information about the physician wellness kick-off which will include sessions not only for you (the physician) but also your spouse. Many times, our spouses may see signs of burnout even before we recognize the indicators. As always, our leadership welcomes your valuable insight and comments on this and any other membership service. It is our desire to continue to support the medical profession and promote community wellness, including that of our physicians, in East Tennessee. Thank you for your continued support of the Knoxville Academy of Medicine and the Tennessee Medical Association. Timothy S. Wilson, MD

LMU-DCOM Offers Osteoblast at Both Locations
LMU-DCOM welcomed new students to both the Harrogate campus and the new Knoxville campus for the annual Osteoblast! Osteoblast is a time set aside for the new students to learn more about the many clubs and societies that are offered to them on campus. This year students enjoyed stopping to speak with the new President of the AMA club at LMU, Brandon Theriault. Brandon shared all the benefits of being part of organized medicine and together with his board they were successful in signing up many students for the TMA and KAM. The KAM is looking forward to working closely with these new classes.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS New Functionality Available in etHIN’s Clinical Viewer! by: Leigh Sterling, Executive Director East Tennessee Health Information Network
East Tennessee Health Information Network’s (etHIN) has upgraded its clinical portal to contain several new features that have been requested by the local healthcare community recently. The upgraded portal, called eHIP Clinical Viewer, may be accessed from the etHIN.org website after completing user onboarding. A few of the new features include: • In addition to the entire longitudinal patient record, users are also able to view records from only specified data providers if desired, which helps reduce the number of records the user needs to review to find the required information. • Icons are now available on the patient search page, showing the type of info available from each data provider. If a patient is uncertain where a certain test or procedure was performed, this feature helps users by showing at a glance the types of data submitted by each data participant. • A Data Indicator on the navigation bar lets users know at a glance
10
| KNOXVILLE MED CINE
which sections of the patient chart contain data, another time savings for users, who no longer need to open chart sections that do not contain data. • A Cumulative Labs page is available to show trending of same type lab results over time, assisting with a longerterm view of the patient’s health. • A Patient Summary Report has been added, providing users a complete summary report containing all data received by etHIN for the patient. • A Recent Patients list showing the previous 20 patient lookups is available, allowing users to easily reopen a patient chart if additional information is needed. The data available in etHIN and new features of the eHIP Clinical Viewer can help streamline your office workflow and significantly reduce wait time to receive the patient data you need. Contact etHIN today at 865-691-8433 for more information and a demonstration of the new eHIP Clinical Viewer!

Blount County Medical Society Quarterly Update By: Travis Groth, DO - BCMS President
“If you set your goals ridiculously high and it’s a failure, you will fail above everyone else’s success.” –James Cameron. As the heat of summer is upon us, Blount Medical Society has planned another Pig Roast pool party. Last year was a huge success and we look forward to another event with great pork (special thanks to Dr. Eric Schrock and his pork smoking skills), good football as Tennessee Volunteers play the Gators, and good times with friends and colleagues. As kids go back to school and lives become a little crazier, we must continue to focus on patient care. Tennessee Medical Association continues to advocate for patient care. It is imperative we as physicians take the front lines in battling the opioid epidemic. So many lives are ruined or lost because of opioids. More than ever, physicians must band together in this fight. Another hot topic in the region is mental illness and suicide. The ripple effect spreads far beyond the immediate family. We must talk about such issues because it is our duty and obligation to help those who are hurting. Blount County has felt the sting of loss, but we will continue to let our light shine!
I continue to be thankful for all the wonderful physicians and community that we have in Blount County. In keeping with tradition, the second Thursday of every month will be a time for colleagues of the Blount Medical Society to enjoy good conversation and cold beer. This summer we will be our second annual Pig Roast at Dr Jennifer Winbiglers home on September 21st. Dr Schrock will be helping smoke a whole pig. You definitely don’t want to miss this event. Time is flying as we are half way through the year. Let us be vigilant of those around us hurting and strive to offer the best care and friendship possible. Come hang out at Round 6 every second Thursday and definitely don’t miss the Pig Roast. It will be a blast. As always, I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as President of the Blount County medical society, and I am thankful for my supportive board. Until next time, Cheers!

KAM KNOXVILLE ACADEMY OF MEDICINE
Maintaining Strong HIPAA Security Compliance By: Diana L. Gustin The reason for HIPAA security compliance should first and foremost be rooted in the duty to protect the patient’s right to privacy. If that is not enough to warrant strict compliance with the rules and regulations, the financial impact of penalties or settlements might persuade physicians, independent medical groups, and hospitals to protect patients’ health information with the best compliance plan, employee training and polices and protocol currently available. News reports from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services may serve as cautionary tales of warning for the uninformed. • February 1, 2018 – HHS Press Release announced an agreement for $3.5 million payment from Fresenius Medical Care North America to the U.S. Department of HHS Office for Civil Rights (OCR) along with the adoption of a comprehensive corrective action plan to settle potential violations of HIPAA. Fresenius is a provider of products and services related to chronic kidney failure serving over 170,000 patients. Five separate breach reports were made in January 2013 for events that occurred between February 2012 and July 2012. (Six years elapsed from the time frame of the incidents to the settlement announcement.) • June 18, 2018 – HHS Press Release announced penalties of $4.3 million from the Administrative Law Judge ruling in the case of University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center regarding theft of an unencrypted laptop and the loss of two unencrypted USB drives. The ALJ agreed with OCR assessment and computation of daily penalties for the failure to encrypt inventory of electronic devices with PHI, for each day of non-compliance with HIPAA. (Six years
elapsed from the time frame of the incidents to the settlement announcement.) • October 15, 2018 – HHS Press Release announced the largest settlement to date for health data breach. Anthem, Inc. agreed to pay $16 million for the undetected, continuous and targeted cyberattack which was initiated through spear phishing emails. At least one employee responded to the malicious email which opened the door to the IT system. Anthem, Inc. (an independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association) is one of the nation’s largest health benefit companies, providing medical coverage to one in eight Americans. Between December 24, 2014 and January 27, 2015, cyber-attackers stole (or had access to) the PHI of almost 79 million individuals. Allegations included failure to implement appropriate measures for detecting hackers. (Four years elapsed from the time of the incidents to the settlement announcement.) • May 6, 2019 - HHS Press Release announced a $3 million settlement with a diagnostic medical imaging company based in Franklin, Tennessee. In May 2014, Touchstone Medical Imaging was notified by the FBI and OCR of unauthorized access to an FTB server with more than 300,000 patients’ PHI. The OCR alleged that Touchstone had failed to thoroughly investigate the matter for several months after being made aware of the situation and likewise failed to notify individuals within the regulatory deadline. (Five years elapsed from the date of the incident to the date of the settlement announcement.) KAMA CORNER WE CARE Communicate Active Relationships Excitement By: Judy Akers, KAMA President
Hard to believe summer is quickly coming to a close and we are fast approaching the last half of 2019. KAMA members have been working through the summer to ensure that we move into the 2019-2020 season of meetings and activities smoothly. Cynthia Gash and Robyn Doiron have put together another yearbook filled with valuable information. Swanee Sexton has ensured that we are on task with our philanthropic giving and distributions. Carolyn Cates and Debbie Kerns along with their committee have been working towards another exciting Fashiondrama. Jen Olllis and Paula Kelly have put together a fun filled and informative line up of meetings. The theme for this year is WE CARE. That will be seen throughout the upcoming meetings as we work to focus on our members as well as highlight some community organizations. Communication is vital to our organization and an important part of our mission. We are thankful for
Jenny Bushkell who communicates through the facebook page, Jen Ollis and Lili Vincent who create the monthly bulletin and Sandy Ange for the amazing photographs she takes to document our activities. Also, many thanks to Cynthia Gash who maintains our website, KAMAlliance. org. KAMA is an all volunteer organization and the group of women who give of their time and talents is because they CARE. We welcome anyone who is interested to join us at our meetings which are as follows: • October 3, 2019 - Fashiondrama - annual fundraiser • November 7, 2019 - KAMA member, Aprikorn Walker, Chef demonstration • December 5, 2019 - Holiday Social KAMA is a non-profit organization established in partnership with the Knoxville Academy of Medicine to promote health education programs that impact the welfare of our community and to encourage friendships among its membership.
