A stroll through a classic car show can sure bring back memories — especially for the visitors who grew up attending shows and now reminisce on the “good ole days.” It can also be a great opportunity to create new memories with your children or grandchildren. Coming to the Rod Run and hearing people’s memories of the cars their folks had, or a friend of theirs in high school had, is all part of the ambiance that makes these shows so great. Everybody remembers their first car and the feeling of freedom driving their friends around town in a really cool set of wheels. Maybe they even recall the cross-country trip they spent in the back seat of their parents’ car... or their very first car show. Keeping that in mind, I just want to suggest this: take your time, talk to those around you, like other show goers, or those who brought their car to showcase. Find out their stories — what made them choose that car or that color? You may find inspiration for your own projects and make new friends. In this fast paced world where people would rather post a “Happy Birthday” meme on your Facebook instead of calling you, don’t leave the Rod Run without making a few human connections.

Gold Digger From Dakota Digital

“Different strokes for different folks,” they say. Nowhere does that maxim hold truer than the hot rod world. People build cars for any reason you can imagine. Race cars (under that heading alone there are a hundred different avenues to explore), street cars, show cars, car builds for therapy, status symbols. Some people build cars as a creative outlet, other cars are built to make money. And then there are the cars that are built for the sole purpose of shutting everyone else down, to have the baddest car in the land. There are some that will claim “winning isn’t everything;” to which others ask, “Then why play the game?” Tammy Ray is no stranger to highend show cars and the level of fit and finish required to compete

rod run magazine fall 2021

Contrary to the old adage, ‘less is more,’ more is more when you’re gunning for the top award on the planet. A quick shave and a hair cut

just won’t cut it in Detroit; Tammy and T&T Customs spent a solid three years massaging Gold Digger. At first, the car’s name might seem a crass play-on-words, however, Ray owns a gold mine, quite literally; she holds the keys to Crisson Gold Mine in northern Georgia. Ridler cars are littered with hand-built, one-off parts and more attention to detail than seems possible. No bolt untouched, no surfaced goes unpolished, chromed or painted. Ted Thomas of T&T Customs in Canton, Georgia took an Alloway chassis and hung a Winters independent quick-change rearend with Wilwood brakes and Aldan coilovers to round out the aftsection. Up front, Mrs. Ray rides on a Heidt’s IFS setup with matching Aldan coilovers and Wilwood binders. The wheels on Gold Digger are like none other. Designed by

on the national show-circuit. A previous inductee to the Pirelli Great 8 (a top honor already) with her ’33 SpeedStar coupe, Tammy was hooked. The Ridler had to be hers. A little background, the Ridler award is regarded as the highest honor a show car can receive. It is handed out at the Detroit Autorama each year to honor the best car. The award’s namesake, Don Ridler, was known for his creativity, so the award is aimed toward builders that express the highest level of build quality along with a healthy dose of creativity combined to make a beautiful vehicle.

Mike Curtis to mimic the drill bit used in a gold mine, Foose Wheels carved the 16” and 20” double sided rollers, which are just as detailed on the inside as they are on the outside. Tammy Ray’s rolling work of art features an LS2 Chevy dressed to the nines with a TH350 transmission to match. As you can imagine, most of the bits under the hood are handmade, such as the brass radiator, headers, exhaust system, valve covers (each one featuring a one-ounce gold nugget!) as well as the unique intake tract. Featuring a custom intake manifold with a fuel injection system from Extrudabody, the painted runners with chrome plated tips with mesh inside really create a different look. The air-intake tubes were fashioned to resemble an exotic, long-runner injection system from days gone by. Meziere supplied the electric water pump. Gold Digger’s interior is nothing short of beautiful. It’s an elegant, classy combination of leather, polished, painted and chrome pieces that flow together to make a cocoon

more inviting than my living room (or most living rooms for that matter). Notice that there is no shifter; take a close look at the waterfall console; it holds a Retrotek push-button shifter. Think ‘push-button Torqueflight meets the 21st century.’ In the center of the Garolite dash (a type of plastic from the aerospace industry), sits a custom Dakota Digital instrument system based on the popular VFD3-1012. Aiming beyond the Great 8 calls for special favors; Ted and Tammy specified a trick modification to the housing of the gauge system that takes a style cue from our MCV-7100 motorcycle instrument with a ‘spike’ on the top and bottom. To match the gorgeous, custom-mixed gold PPG paint, we whipped up a special amber-colored display color for Tammy’s special instrument system. It appears Tammy has been bitten by the car show bug in a big, big way. Her first custom car made it to the Great 8, and the second show car captured the top award in the country. One can only wonder what her next build will look like, considering she already owns the gold standard.

vendors Metal Brothers Hot Rods Coyote Swapped 56 F100 Wins Truck of the Year! Metal Brothers Hot Rods in Theodore, AL has just returned from the 2020 Grand National F-100 Show with a bit of hardware. The 56 F100 they recently completed debuted at the show and took home truck of the Year honors. We met Francisco and Adam from MB at a Goodguys event in 2019 and spent some time with them at the show. They had informed us of the build and we were eager to be part of it. The truck is all custom and is powered by a Generation 2 5.0L Coyote engine backed by a 6R80 transmission and a 9 inch Ford differential. For the chassis, Metal Brothers opted for a Roadster Shop frame and Wilwood Brakes. The MB team spent countless hours tending to the body of this 56’ making

sure it was perfect. A lot of custom touches were done during the restoration and the attention to detail stands out in the finished product. When it came to the front accessory drive they gave us a call for our Naturally Aspirated Speed Drive and Speed Series Pulleys. They also opted to pick up a set of our 6R80 Transmission cooler fittings. The builders at Metal Brothers painted the entire powertrain before final installation which when combined with the new pulley set from PBH looks killer. The entire project is an example of quality workmanship, custom touches, and Coyote power greatness. We are proud to say that this truck is #PBHEQUIPPED.

Thank you to the Metal Brothers team and we look forward to many more builds from them in the future.

vendors MEET THE NEW “DAVE” Who is Dave’s Truck Parts? Dave’s is a family owned business located in Claremont, NC. As of January 2020, Dave’s transferred ownership to a new entity: 5-Time Enterprises. 5TE is owned by former NASCAR driver and family friend, Robert Huffman. Dave has continued to work with the store to help Huffman transition into his new role as owner. If you are not familiar with Robert Huffman, well, where have you been?! Not many drivers can say they helped bring a first-time manufacturer into NASCAR, claim five NASCAR Touring Series championships and a two track championships at his home track Hickory Motor Speedway. But, then again, not many drivers are like Robert Huffman. Huffman was like a lot of young race fans growing up in North Carolina. He and his family would often go to Hickory Motor Speedway to watch his dad JV race. Huffman caught the racing bug at a young age, and it eventually worked out pretty well for the Claremont native. When he was old enough, Huffman decided to get a race car and give it a try himself. He got his start in the Limited Sportsman division and moved up to the Late Model Stock division winning back-to-back track championships in 1998-89. “I had a good time racing at Hickory Motor Speedway with my friends and when I had the opportunity to move on to the NASCAR Goody’s Dash Series I decided to give it a try full-time in 1990,” Huffman said. Huffman was like a lot of other young drivers looking for any opportunity to move up in the NASCAR world. Following his championship season, Huffman moved on to the NASCAR Busch (now Xfinity) Series in 1991, with his family-owned team. Huffman said that they built a Busch car and tried to make it on our own with a handful of starts but we never had the resources to race full-time in the series. Huffman’s best start (13th) and finish (22nd) in the division came at Hickory in 1992. He made 11 starts in the No. 2 division in NASCAR between 1991-1993. Huffman returned to short track competition throughout the southeast in his Late Model car. He won at tracks in Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia over the next three seasons. In 1996, he 20

decided to return to NASCAR Goody’s Dash Series full-time. Huffman built his own car and operated out of his familyowned shop in Claremont. To say it was a good decision might be the understatement of his career. Although he was competitive and won races, he didn’t get things rolling until the 1998 season. “We kept working as a team and got to the point by the 1998 season- we were ready to go after a title,” Huffman said. “We went on to win eight races that year and the championship.” Huffman returned in 1999. He won seven races and his second title and in 2000, Huffman became the second driver in the history of the series to win threestraight crowns, visiting Victory Lane four times. Huffman went on to win the 2003 Goody’s Dash championship scoring three wins during the season at Daytona, Charlotte and Kentucky Speedways. With his fifth title, he joined Dean Combs as the only driver to win that many championships in the history of the series. Huffman received support and engines from Toyota Research and Development in the early 2000’s with his Goody’s Dash Series team and that enabled him to the take the next step in his driving career. His relationship with TRD opened another door when the manufacturer decided to make the move to NASCAR’s Truck Series. “They came on board and helped my team and also Eric Van Cleef’s team in the Dash Series. This whole deal started with a phone call and moved on from there,” he said. After Huffman’s success in the NASCAR Goody’s Series, he was the logical choice to move up to the truck series. His chance came in 2004.

driving career might not have ended like he wanted, Huffman knew it was time for a change. “I’m still great friends with David and a lot of people at TRD and I see them a lot at the track today,” Huffman said. “We had some great times and success in the race car, but I knew it was time for me to move on.” Huffman remembers the fans that always were there for him no matter where he raced,“I could race at Hickory or on the road at another track and the fans were always there and supportive. I’ll always remember those fans and some of them now support Landon when he races.” Huffman began working on race teams. He also guided his son Landon start his own racing career. “I can’t say that I regretted anything in my career,” said Huffman. “It was a good transition for me when I quit driving.” Huffman evolved into a crew chief for several teams in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Hooters Pro Cup Series and other series before his break came in the Camping World Truck Series. Since his racing career, and working with Brad Keselowski Racing, he’s now able to spend more time with his family – wife Ashley, daughter Brooke and son Landon.

Huffman ran a total of 40 truck races in his career. His best finish (6th) came at Richmond in 2004. While his

SEMA’s Battle of the Builders By Juan Torres

Applications are now available for the SEMA Show Battle of the Builders, the coveted competition that unites and recognizes SEMA Show vehicle builders. Open exclusively to those with a car or truck displayed at the annual trade show taking place in November, the competition celebrates and honors top builders for reaching what many consider to be the pinnacle of automotive events. The competition, now in its eighth year, tells the stories behind the builds, and it provides builders with additional exposure and a chance to be recognized and named as the industry’s top builder. With vehicle space available only to qualified exhibitors, SEMA Show vehicle builders represent an elite group of individuals who have the distinction of superior craftsmanship and proven excellence. Exhibitors are highly selective on the vehicles and builders they choose to showcase their products, capture attention and drive traffic to their booths.

“Exhibitors rely on vehicles at the SEMA Show to optimally showcase their products in use and generate buzz,” said Tom Gattuso, SEMA vice president of events. “When an exhibitor chooses to showcase a vehicle, whether it’s in their booth or elsewhere in the Show, that exhibitor is investing in the build and the builder. They’re choosing the best builders to represent their brands and tell their stories.” The SEMA Battle of the Builders competition will award one winner in four different categories—Hot Rod, Truck/Off-Road, Import/Sport Compact and Young Guns— before crowning an overall top builder during SEMA Ignited, the official SEMA Show afterparty that takes place on Friday after the weeklong trade show ends. As part of SEMA’s initiative to support and encourage the younger generation in the industry, the association will continue its SEMA Young Guns Regional Qualifiers. Applications for the Young Guns Regional Qualifiers are also available online, making

the program open to builders who may not already have a vehicle displayed at the SEMA Show, provided they are 27 years and younger. Young Guns Regional Qualifier winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip for two to the 2021 SEMA Show, transportation of the winner’s vehicle, a designated feature vehicle spot at the Show and entry into the SEMA Battle of the Builders competition, where they will compete alongside established vehicle builders from the industry. “Each year, we meet amazing young builders through the Young Guns Program,” said Gattuso. “It’s inspiring to witness the passion they have for all things car-related, and to see the industry embrace them as they build a network of contacts and connections that will fuel a lifelong career.” To register, or for more information on the SEMA Battle of the Builders competition, log on to www.semashow.com/botb. The deadline to register is October 15.

Can you whoop a kid on video games? Probably not. But you can show them a whole new “reality” by taking them to a car show. Encouraging a child to get outside, see glistening paint jobs, and hear the purr of finely tuned engines will awaken all of their senses. You might even be surprised at how much your own enthusiasm is rekindled! Life is full of choices for kids. You can help them make the right ones by sharing your appreciation for cool old cars. The practical knowledge you share with a child today... just may be the experience that sets them on a lifetime of success. Reliving High School Memories Old high school friends reunite over a silver C2 Convertible

In 1966, when I was in high school, my best friend from kindergarten, grade school and high school would pick me up every morning in his Corvette. Fifty-five years later, I was getting close to recapturing my high school days and buying a classic Corvette. I was unsure of the year my friend’s Corvette was but assumed it was a 1962. I hadn’t talked to him since high school, so I decided to track him down somewhere in Arizona. I found his business online and called the office. The receptionist said he no longer worked there but asked who I was and told me to hang on for a minute. She returned and said she had just been on the phone with him and gave me his number. I called immediately and there he was. After a minute of formal hellos and how have you beens, I asked him if the Vette he had in high school was a ‘61 or a ‘62. He said ‘61. “Oh boy,” I replied. “All these years I wanted a ‘62 because I thought that’s the year you had in high school.”

“I’ll buy it!” I exclaimed. “You have to come down to Arizona and drive it first. It’s in very good shape but not perfect,” he told me, promising me he wouldn’t sell it to anyone else. He was given the Corvette by his dad and had owned it for 30 years. It was all original except for a new top and Hurst shifter. And if that’s not enough, it had only 21,400 original miles. A very long week and a half later, I was in Arizona with my girlfriend and a cashier’s check in hand. We roared around his neighborhood for 10 minutes in complete ecstasy – it was more fun than I ever imagined. The car was shipped to me a few days later, and I put it away safe and sound in my garage. Spectacular is what people have said when seeing it. -Arnie Goodman

He said, “Nope, it was a ‘61, but I do have a ‘62 for sale.”
