The Olympics, whether summer or winter, always brings a sense of nostalgia. For me, it always seems that the whole world takes a pause from strife, their struggles, politics, etc., becoming a place where differences seem to fade away and cheering on your team takes center stage. You even find yourself hopeful for those who have come through great adversity or struggles, to be able to make their Olympic debut or be the last time competing. Many times I find myself rooting for another country, just because the story of the Olympian is so fantastic- you can’t help but want them to win. If only it could last for longer than a few short weeks every couple years, what an amazing world we could become.

WINTER fashion trends by katie lee

an we all agree that winter is the hardest season to dress for? It’s so easy to reach for that old boring black jacket to bundle up in

and not think about your outfit, but you don’t have to sacrifice style for staying warm! Winter doesn’t mean skipping out on all the fun fashions of the season!

The revival of velvet brings back so many 90’s memories, am I right?! I’ve had so many shoppers give me their velvet stories and I absolutely love hearing them all! And I love that it’s back! Velvet looks great dressed up, dressed down and there are so many different options for whatever velvet style you’re going for! Dress it down with a casual velvet tee to wear with jeans or dress it up with a velvet dress with black tights or with a leather jacket! Have fun with this trend!

There are tons of fun sweaters out there right now. From cool cut outs, fun shapes & textures, distressing to appliqués and more! Seriously there are so many fun sweaters happening out there right now that are perfect for everyone! 8

Leather is, year after year, one of my most favorite winter staples! From leather leggings to leather jackets, you can really stay warm by adding real or faux leather pieces to your

A good leather jacket is an absolute staple in my winter wardrobe. It’s perfect to throw on over a dress for a special occasion or as an easy and warm top layer over your everyday looks. I sized up in my leather jacket so that I can throw it on over my sweaters for a perfect warm winter outfit!

L E AT H E R L E G G I N G S Leather leggings are again, a closet staple in the winter for me! They’re twice as warm as regular leggings and they add that dressy/ edgy touch to any outfit! Pair them with tunics for a casual look or fabulous tops and heels to dress them up! They’re so easy and so perfect for all your winter outfits!

Leopard print will always be in style but finding new and unique ways to wear it and incorporate it into your outfits is so fun! You can include it in a statement jacket or in something a little more easy, like a clutch or a heel. But I love that leopard is always in style and you can always find a new, fun, unique way to wear it!

CROPPED JE ANS A new fun denim trend that’s hitting the scene these days is cropped denim which is so perfect for the winter months! In my opinion it’s more flattering than skinny jeans and it looks so good with ankle booties!

Hair Dreams Do Come True

Have you ever dreamed to have a celebrity’s gorgeous full locks? Well, we hope you know by now they’re probably extensions. Believe me, it’s not your fault if you don’t roll out of bed with amazing beach waves. Extensions do more than add length; they also add volume. If you have hair that’s at least 3 inches long, you can get extensions and they come in all kinds of colors, so you can match your current hair color or add a highlighting or lowlighting effect. And with DreamCatchers, it’s all about quality, and we take pride in our hair, just as you do. That’s why we only use 100% Remy hair. Doing this ensures lasting, quality hair, the kind you dream about.

What is 100% Remy Hair? “Our hair is a unique blend of Remy hair (100% Human Hair) which means that the cuticles are intact and the hair runs from root to point. Unlike the gluein systems which are usually dipped in silicone to create the illusion of silky shiny hair (which washes out and drops performance dramatically after a few washes), DreamCatchers hair is of such a premium quality that they perform without losing their luster. DreamCatchers are no ordinary hair extensions. Made of the finest human hair, they can be styled, permed, and colored – allowing you to treat them exactly as you would your own natural hair. How will the extensions be applied and removed? “The Secret is in the tip”. Our hair quality is so amazing, you definitely wouldn’t want to just throw it away after a few months. DreamCatchers

have come up with a tipping system (exclusive to DreamCatchers) that is made of a polyurethane (rubberized material) that doesn’t damage the extensions, or your hair. Our I-Tip system uses a patented rubberized tip that allows the hair to lay flat against your head. This allows you to re-use the same extensions month after month (in some cases 2 years or more), so you get the extended enjoyment of amazing looking hair. Do you have natural colors? “The goal with extensions is to have the most natural look you can achieve,” says Tony Promiscuo, owner of Atlanta’s Godiva Salon. With over 40 colors and blends, DreamCatchers is the perfect solution

to achieve any look. Plus we offer vibrant colors for unique looks. Also, “Individual strands allow a customized, more natural look,” says celebrity hairstylist and salon owner Philip Pelusi of New York City’s Tela salon. “You can play with the color or length and fill in spots that need it more than others. It’s a more accurate way to get the desired look.” Dream Catchers are a micro cylinder method of adding extra length or volume without the use of glues, waxes or heat. The micro cylinders used are color coordinated to a shade blending with your own hair. With a specialized method, your hair is threaded through this cylinder to the root where the extension is also inserted and clamped tight. The polyurethane tipped hair is 100% human hair and is re-usable over and over again.

your kitchen and make it more efficient r o l Reco

A lot goes on in the kitchen: preparing food, sharing meals, spending time with a friend over a cup of coffee, helping children with homework, baking for special occasions and much more. If your kitchen could use an update to become an easierto-use, more pleasant room, Woodcraft has some ideas and products to help you get started.

“It’s amazing the difference you can make with just a few functional and decorative changes to your home’s kitchen area. Most of these projects can be completed in a weekend. If you live close to a Woodcraft store, the staff will be happy to help you match products to any home improvement job you plan to do and offer knowledgeable how-to advice for using the products,” Darin Lawrence, Woodcraft director of product development, said. “For more project ideas, check out Woodcraft on Pinterest woodcraftsupply. If you are not ready to replace kitchen cabinets, consider changing the color and hardware. Since the current trend is for darker cabinets, select an easy-touse dark General Finishes Gel Stain, such as the popular java or antique walnut. If you choose to remove some doors for an open-shelf look, consider using a General Finishes Milk Paint shade for the interior to complement the exterior color. For easier door opening and closing, choose a Salice Hinge in a darker titanium finish that will complement the darker cabinets. For kitchen drawers, upgrade the slides, changing from side mounts to undermount slides with Blum Tandem Plus Blumotion Concealed Drawer Runners. Reface the face frames and cabinet ends with Sauers & Co. Wood Veneer backed with 3M Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) that is pre-sanded and ready to finish to match the cabinet doors. For cutting, use a Quad Pro Trimmer with tungsten carbide double-edge cutters that trim veneer in either direction. For easy application of this

To add or replace decorative molding for your cabinets and/or walls, cut perfectly mitered corner joints with the EZ Pro Crown King Crown Molding Jig. The handy SharkGrip 8” Bar/Nail Puller can pry in a tight spot with little damage to molding and has curved blade that lifts molding easily. To help with molding installation, use the 3rd Hand’s articulating foot to support crown molding at an angle. Say goodbye to constant searches for items in cabinets with a DIY 22”-24” Pullout Shelf Kit. The shelves are easy to measure, cut, assemble and install. Or custom build your own pullout shelves using the Pre-cut Prefinished Drawer Side and Drawer Bottom material with the easy-to-use KREG Micro Pocket Drill Guide.

For cluttered countertops that are home to too many small appliances and other items, consider storing ones used only occasionally elsewhere, perhaps in cabinets. veneer product, the FastCap Speed Roller Pro ensures consistent pressure for good results. TM

General Finishes Gel and Milk Paint are also good choices to recolor your wood furniture in shades that match or complement the new cabinet look. Milk Paint offers an opportunity to add a splash of color on a small piece of furniture, shelving or a plant stand to brighten the look but not overpower the kitchen. If your wood cabinets and/or furniture only need a cover-up for nicks, scratches and other damage, Touch-Up Pens, Fill Sticks and Burn-in Sticks from Touch-Up Solutions may be the answer. They come in 10 colors, ranging from light oak to black.

Add subtle lighting with Haefele 12-Volt Loox LED Strip Lights in cool or warm white. Ideal for background lighting, use under or around cabinets, around doorframes, and pretty much anywhere you want. Strips are flexible, easy to install and can be cut to size. LED lighting generates very little heat, uses less energy, and has a long service life. For more information about Woodcraft products, visit

Battling Back

Shaun White “The Flying Tomato” will try defying gravity once again!

haun White, “The Flying Tomato” defied gravity in the 2006 and 2010 Olympic champion in snowboard halfpipe. He rode into the Sochi Olympics aiming to make history two times over: by becoming the first U.S. man to win gold in the same event at three consecutive Winter Olympics, and by claiming the first-ever gold medal in the snowboard slope style event, which made its Olympic debut in Sochi.

Then two days before the Opening Ceremony, White dropped out of the slope style competition, citing potential risk of injury due to the dangerous course. He turned his sole focus back to the halfpipe, which looked to be a smart decision after he earned the highest score in the qualifying round. Unfortunately in the final, his Olympic winning streak ended when he fell twice in his first run, played it safe in his second, and finished off the podium in fourth place. Now 31 years old, while gearing up for a fourth Olympics, White nearly saw his dreams get crushed thanks to a brutal crash that left him battered and bloody. Back in October, White took a hard slam while training on a 22-foot Olympic superpipe in New Zealand. Overcoming injuries and using what he learned from his disappointment in Sochi to try and reclaim his title as Olympic champion at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

the Road to Redemption Lindsey Vonn’s Many Wounds Have Prepared Her For A Final Golden Olympic Run

crash during training had left her screaming, then passing out from the pain, on the side of a Colorado mountain, 15 months ahead of the Pyeongchang Olympics. Just one of a series of serious injuries that has interrupted the American's illustrious ski career, this required delicate surgery to insert a plate and more than a dozen screws into her broken right arm while trying to avoid nerve damage. The lengthy list includes concussions, broken fingers, torn ligaments, a fractured ankle, along with the ripped-up right knee that held her out of the 2014 Sochi Games and prevented her from defending her downhill gold medal from four years earlier, when she also collected a bronze in the Super-G. Vonn wants to show mastery of the compendium of injuries, heartbreaks, slights, embarrassments and missteps that have accompanied her 78 World Cup victories (more

than any woman and second to only Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark’s 86) and two Olympic medals, including a gold in the 2010 downhill at Vancouver. The lists of scars and of victories are intertwined: There might have been more of the latter had there been less of the former, but the meaning of the triumphs has been enriched by the struggles. Vonn will compete in at least the downhill, Super-G and combined (a mix of downhill and slalom) events in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The Games will be Vonn’s fourth Olympics. She will be among the oldest racers on the mountain—nearly all of the competitors who came into the sport when Vonn did, are retired—and, by a wide margin, the most accomplished.

I have many patients ask me, “What is the best way to keep my long term weight loss goals from taking the back seat to my busy family life?”. It is a question and struggle that almost all of us have had at some point. The best advice that I have is, in one word, “pre-planning”. Yes, planning for the week ahead does take time and thought. As the week unravels, you will be singing your own praises because you were able to conquer time and logistic obstacles with healthy food alternatives. What I recommend to patients is, to grab some snack-sized seal-able bags and divide fruits, vegetables, pretzels, granola, etc. just before the week begins. Measuring out items into these bags provides you with a reasonable portion and you know exactly how many calories you are consuming. This is convenient for side items for a work lunch or for a snack while you play chauffeur to your children’s activity schedules. If you must grab something from fast food or at a restaurant, make good decisions. Choose a side salad instead of fries. Order your sandwich without cheese, mayonnaise, or other high calorie sauces. If there is not an option for a breaded bun substitute, only eat the top or bottom side of the bun. If you order a salad, make sure it isn’t covered with cheese, croutons, bacon, and/or other high calorie/fat items that sabotage the whole purpose of eating a salad. Make sure the salad has a lean protein on it if it is an entree. Only add small amounts of the dressing to the salad as needed, instead of the whole package. Chances are you won’t even use half of the portion provided to you, and you just saved yourself lots of calories. Small changes add up to big results! Losing weight or maintaining your ideal weight is something that has to be pursued continually, even when family and work responsibilities demand your time and attention. The process of change and maintenance by means of goalsetting is ever-evolving and takes lots of re-evaluation. In order for something to work for you, it has to be adaptable to your personality, age, preferences, and yes… a busy schedule! Most importantly it is a must to have a support team that can help you along the way. Our team of healthcare professionals at Premier are ready to help you work through your

plans to reach your goals. We find nothing more rewarding in our job than seeing our patients achieve their dreams, one goal at a time. Play a Role in Saving Endangered Wildlife with a Visit to by Sarah Merrell Photos courtesy of Zoo Knoxville

Visiting Zoo Knoxville is a magical experience as visitors can get eye-to-eye with giraffes— or even feed one, or watch powerful African elephants enjoy a dip in their pool or adorable red pandas lounge or play.

While seeing the animals is a memorable experience for visitors of all ages, at the heart of Zoo Knoxville is so much more.

Zoo Knoxville is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The AZA is dedicated to maintaining standards of excellence in animal care, but also works tirelessly to positively impact wildlife through conservation initiatives and partnerships.

South African Penguin

Through the AZA Species Survival Plan programs, zoos like our very own Zoo Knoxville play a critical role in protecting endangered species. This involves captive breeding, reintroduction programs, public education and field conservation for some of the most endangered animals on the planet. Working together with other zoos, Zoo Knoxville helps maintain healthy and genetically diverse populations of animals so they are not lost to extinction.

In fact, the staff members at Zoo Knoxville travel to far-off places like the Komodo Islands, Madagascar and Indonesia to study animals in their native habitats and support conservation efforts.

“We appreciate the funds from this program,” said Zoo Knoxville President Lisa New. “It supports the work we do to save animals from extinction and we are grateful that our visitors make it possible for Zoo Knoxville to be a part of a bigger, global initiative that has an impact.”

The zoo offers tours with a dedicated zoo educator, classroom programs and animal encounters. The ZooMobile program even brings the zoo to you, with educators and animals, that hit the road to teach about habitats, adaptations and classifications. Other programs include Night Safaris and teacher workshops.

The presence of wildlife in our world is a treasure, one that we will never be able to reclaim if it disappears. Wildlife around the world is increasingly threatened. Historically, one out of every one million species became extinct each year; since the Industrial Revolution in the mid-1800’s, this rate of extinction has increased rapidly. Recent studies have shown that rates of extinction are currently 10 to 100 times higher than normal and that the world is on the brink of a sixth mass extinction, the first since the time of the dinosaurs. WCN’s mission is to protect endangered species and preserve their natural habitats by supporting entrepreneurial conservationists who pursue innovative strategies for people and wildlife to co-exist and thrive.

Roasted Delicata Squash

with Tuscan Kale

3 delicata squash (about 3 pounds total)

Substitute our featured Superfood, Butternut Squash!

1/4 teaspoon coarse salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 pound bow-tie pasta 2 bunches Italian (lacinato) kale 1/2 cup pine nuts 1 cup crumbled feta cheese Extra-virgin olive oil

Cut the squash in half lengthwise and remove the seeds. Cut into 1-inch chunks (there's no need to remove the edible skin). Arrange on a baking sheet and spray or brush with olive oil. Season with the salt and pepper. Roast 10 to 15 minutes, until tender. Allow to cool. Fill a large pot with water, add salt and bring to a boil over high heat. Add the pasta and cook until just tender. Drain, rinse and set aside. Remove the leaves of the kale from the stems and cut into large pieces. Set up a steaming basket over boiling water and steam the kale just until it is bright green, about 2 minutes. Remove and plunge into ice water to stop the cooking and keep them bright green. Toast the pine nuts in a small dry skillet over medium-low heat until light brown, 3 to 5 minutes. (Stay nearby while you are toasting. Left unattended, the nuts can easily burn.) Combine the pasta, kale, squash, and pine nuts in a large bowl. Toss, and then add the cheese. Taste and adjust the seasonings accordingly.

Gage Talent’s Holiday Fashion Show Raises Funds for Endangered South African Penguins

by Sarah Merrell

he lights shown and cameras flashed as over 80 models, ranging from kids to adults, strutted the runway in stylish black and white dresses and swimwear, gowns in holiday colors and dapper tuxedos.

“We love producing shows that are fashion for a cause,” said Gage Models & Talent Agency Owner Jaime Hemsley. “We’re thrilled that the fashion show benefited the zoo and raised funds for the endangered penguins. We look forward to seeing them enjoy enrichment items that will improve their quality of life.”

Hosted by Gage Models & Talent Agency, the Holiday Fashion Show took place on Thursday, November 30 on the roof top of Downtown 211 in Knoxville’s Market Square and featured looks by The Gilded Gown, Regal Tuxedo, Xen by Rachele Swimwear, Legends of Hollywood and even had kids modeling shirts from the zoo’s gift shop. Attendees may have also spotted some penguins. Well, kids in penguin costumes.

To learn more about upcoming fashion events and shows through Gage Talent, visit www. For more information on Zoo Knoxville and to purchase tickets to the zoo, visit

While the fashion show didn’t have actual penguins waddling down the runway, it did benefit penguins that are very real—the penguins at Zoo Knoxville. The zoo is home to five South African penguins who play an important role. Visitors to the zoo have the opportunity to see these penguins swim and dive, but they also learn about the penguins’ wild counterparts who are endangered. In 2010, National Geographic reported that African penguins are sliding towards extinction due to industrial fishing around the Cape. Thanks to conservation and breeding programs at zoos like Zoo Knoxville, animals like the penguins will hopefully remain in our world for many years to come. The fashion show drew about 100 attendees and raised over $2,000 that will go towards enrichment items for the zoo’s penguins.

tlanta's Hank & Cupcakes are only a two-piece, but theirs is a sound that's bigger, sonically richer and more viscerally galvanizing than that of any 12-piece funk ensemble or multiple-strat-toting metal outfit you could think to name. Married couple and Israeli ex-pats Sagit "Cupcakes" Shir and Ariel "Hank" Scherbacovsky call it "indietronic," but there's really no way words can do justice to their irrepressible and insistently hook-y brand of electronic indie-pop hybridized with deliriously danceable rock 'n' roll. "We had just come out of being in another band, and we were experiencing a period of creative emptiness, where we just weren't sure what our next move should be," says Shir, explaining the band's genesis during a recent phone interview. "Ultimately, Hank & Cupcakes was born out of that boredom and uncertainty. The two of us just started rehearsing together, with no commitments other than to enjoy being 100 percent creative, just a bass and drums. "We began exploring very deeply, and we found a way to make up for all the musicians that were 'missing' from our lineup. We don't do things in the traditional way a bassist or a drummer would do things. There's a lot of creativity and being unconventional involved in the way we approach our instruments." Shir gives a good deal of the credit for crafting H&C's rafter-shaking, multi-dimensional racket to hubby Scherbacovsky and his ingenious fourstring manipulations. "He has this incredibly complex rig, like a mad scientist kind of thing,"

she says. "He splits every signal into four lines, with different effects. It makes his bass sound like a full band." To be sure, the story of Hank and Cupcakes' crazy travelogue of a career, and of the consequent evolution of their one-of-a-kind, genreredefining sound is hella fascinating all by itself. It began when Tel Aviv natives Scherbacovsky and Shir met while playing in a military band as members of the Israeli army back in 1999. They clicked both musically and personally, and played in a couple other projects together before marrying and moving to Havana to study jazz and indigenous Cuban music. Their Cuban sojourn was cut short by the country's uneasy political climate, and thus the couple bounced back to Israel and undertook the aforementioned creative transformation before officially founding Hank & Cupcakes and moving to Brooklyn, NY in 2008. Stateside, it wasn't long before H&C's emergent pop savvy and colorful, cathartic live sets built a buzz, turning the band into a minor New York legend. They started touring outside the state, traveling all over the U.S., playing CMJ and various other stops on the up-and-comers rock festival circuit before trekking abroad to Europe and the Middle East. A publishing deal ensued, and then, on the eve of releasing their debut record, Hank & Cupcakes

But the idyll of having a major label record deal proved to be short-lived. "It was a situation where we had an album ready to come out, and all of a sudden, the label started questioning things," Shir says. "Then they demanded we bring in co-songwriters. And then they said the budget was gone. We were used to being involved in all aspects of our band, from business to music to promotion, but they didn't want us being our own leaders. They wanted to keep us out of the loop." Shir says the band managed to find a loophole in their contract, then secured their release in 2013 -- miraculously enough, with rights to the songs they had written still intact. Liberated, they went on to release their debut "Naked" independently in 2013. Two more albums -- including 2014's "Cash for Gold" and last year's "Cheap Thrill" -- and a move to Atlanta later, and the buzz the band started building before the BMG derailment is mounting yet again. H & C learned to produce their own videos, and have since released a slew of video singles, several of them in conjunction with famed fashion photographer Javier Ortega. The duo have also logged literally hundreds of dates on the road; they're currently gearing up for a four-month touring run, the end of which will see them head back to the studio to record songs for a fourth Hank & Cupcakes release in 2018. "I think most of our growth has come thanks to playing all of those shows these last few years," Shir says. "We've become much more elaborate in what we do, and it's also helped our sound to grow much bigger. Our performance level has gone way up."

Music has been one of the greatest blessings in my life. It’s taken me to parts of the world I would’ve never seen and connected me with people I would’ve never met. It’s given my life purpose. Without music, I may have never met the two greatest loves of my life, my wife, Amanda, and my daughter, Annabelle. However, at the same time, music almost tore my life apart. -EB
