ften in life it seems you are having to find “a new normal”. Whether it is a new job or position, sickness, death or just starting over; adjusting to change is often stressful and can be equally stressful for those close to you. Thinking life will get back to normal after a major event or trauma is a farce. Accepting a new normal however, can be rewarding. Take a chance to do things you always wanted to accomplish. Get out and enjoy your surroundings, especially the “little things”. Make sure you tell people how you feel, for they maybe under a different assumption. Remember life is short, therefore extremely precious. Don’t waste it! _

FIREUPYOURBURN CERTIFIED GRASS-FED WHEY For Garden of Life to launch an animal protein, the entire system had to be different from other “so-called grassfed” protein. When you want to be your very

BEST

Consuming an adequate amount of protein is essential for bulking and maintaining muscle mass. Protein powders are an extremely convenient way to ensure sufficient protein intake, especially for those of us who lead busy lives and are always on the move. Just like with the whole foods I eat everyday, I want my protein to be as clean and natural as possible, and the Sport Grass Fed Whey from Garden of Life is one of the cleanest protein powders on the market. It is derived from grass fed Irish cattle and is free of artificial sweetener, gluten, soy, added sugar, and hormones.

Corey Church • 38 nutritional strength coach

Probiotics are another part of my daily supplements, since they play a major role in digestion and immune system health. Fitbiotic is my go-to since it has an impressive 50 billion CFU, 4 grams of prebiotic fiber, and comes in a box of convenient single-serving powder sticks that I can easily throw in along with my protein shake, combining to make a delicious, gut-healthy post workout recovery.

Squirt Gun Water Painting Balloons

Jackson Pollock move over! Dig through the toy box and pull out all the squirt guns and fill each of them with different colors of tempera paints. We bought red, blue and yellow paint and mixed them to make green, orange and purple.

There is much fun to be had with water balloons. Here we had batting practice with a wiffle ball bat and water balloons. Start by filling the balloons with water and then keep score of who hits the most. Emery’s softball coach should be proud.

Movie Night

An outdoor movie night can be a fun way to get friends & family together. Such parties produce minimal mess because the festivities take place outdoors. Projectors, many of which can now hook up to mobile phones capable of streaming movies, and a “screen are all you need to host a fun outdoor movie night. Large, white sheets or the side of a home can work as a screen. But homeowners can purchase screens from electronics retailers as well. Arrange picnic blankets and lawn chairs throughout the yard so guests have somewhere to sit and enjoy the show.

Design a dream outdoor entertaining space

An outdoor entertaining area that offers the same amenities found inside a home can make outdoor retreats both comfortable and functional. Creative planning can help homeowners design dream areas perfect for hosting friends or family.

Upon the arrival of warm weather, many individuals prefer to spend their free time outside, relishing the fresh air and sunshine and evenings spent under the stars. But cracked patios and makeshift chairs and tables may not establish the desired ambiance. An outdoor entertaining area that offers the same amenities found inside a home can make outdoor retreats both comfortable and functional. Establish goals As with any project, the first step when coordinating outdoor living areas is to determine what you hope to achieve with the space. Will it be a location for lounging? Will people be cooking meals outside? Is the pool the central focus of the yard? Answering these questions and more can help homeowners decide how to design their entertaining spaces. Remember, however, that goals may evolve as landscape designers and even architects make their own suggestions for the space or present limitations. Evaluate the space Look at the lot and decide what will go where, such as where to place the party space, where to create a quiet hideaway and where to locate a pool house or outdoor shower. A large, flat yard can be divided into a series of patios that serve different purposes. Yards that are built on a hill or a slope can still be utilized with creative design elements, such as multi-tiered decking. By working with qualified designers, homeowners can bring their ideas to life. Easy food and drink access Traipsing in and out of the house for refreshments can become tiresome when entertaining outside. In such situations, people also can track dirt inside of the home or leave a trail of pool water in their wake. Outdoor kitchens

allow easy access to food and drink that makes outdoor entertaining much easier. The experts at Angie’s List suggest outdoor kitchens be built close to the house to make it easier to run electricity and plumbing to the outdoor kitchen. Outdoor kitchens should include a sink, small refrigerator, built-in grill, and bar area. Creature comforts Homeowners should think about the things that make the inside of their homes so comfortable and then replicate that outside. Sofas and love seats covered in fabric suited for outdoors and plenty of pillows can make for great lounging. Lighting that can be adjusted for day or night, or even to set the mood, is another consideration. Shade structures, like a trellis or retractable awning, will keep the area comfortable and can also define outdoor “rooms” and establish privacy. Fire it up Many homeowners enjoy having fire elements in their yards. Lanterns and candles may create a romantic feel, but a fire pit or outdoor fireplace may help extend use of the outdoor entertaining area beyond summer. Entertaining outdoors is made that much more enticing with a dream outdoor living space full of amenities.

Carly Pearce

I JUST WANT TO BE REAL I N EVERY T H I N G I DO.

The ‘NEW’voice of country

an exclusive interview by hushh magazine

Born into the bluegrass brawn of Kentucky, Carly Pearce has never known a moment that Country music wasn’t her destined path. At the young age of 11 she began touring with a local band, at 16 quit high school for a job performing at Dollywood while being home-schooled and learned humility working odd jobs upon moving to Nashville. Now, with her highly-acclaimed debut album EVERY LITTLE THING (Big Machine Records) and the GOLD-certified No. 1 blockbuster title track, Carly is the highest charting solo female debut since July 2015 and joins an elite group as one of only three women to accomplish this feat in the past 12 years. Previously scoring a threeweek No. 1 on SiriusXM’s The Highway, Carly’s second chart-topper “If My Name Was Whiskey” helped solidify her in their “Class of 2017.” Aligned with sought-after producer/songwriter busbee (Katy Perry, Keith Urban, Maren Morris, Kelly Clarkson) and regarded as “the best country debut of 2017” (Uproxx), Carly’s textured vocals and emotive songwriting prowess are emphasized across 13 tracks including her full-bodied new single “Hide the Wine.” The CMT Next Women of Country alum was named to multiple 2017 Ones To Watch Lists as People touted her “the new voice of Country,” and the momentum has continued. With nearly 50 invitations to play the Grand Ole Opry, Carly previously joined the bill alongside Eric Church, Kelsea Ballerini, Martina McBride, Kip Moore and more. Following her sold-out run on Brett Young’s CALIVILLE TOUR, Carly heads out with Blake Shelton’s COUNTRY MUSIC FREAKS, Thomas Rhett’s LIFE CHANGES and Rascal Flatts’ BACK TO US tours throughout 2018.

When did you actually start writing your own music? CP: I moved to Pigeon Forge and worked at Dollywood during my 2 last years of high school and through school I had done poetry and written short stories, and was always really into English and writing. It really wasn’t until I started playing guitar over in Pigeon Forge that I really started to develop a love for song writing and then as I moved on and moved to Nashville I started co-writing, so that’s when it started to be full time. It truly is amazing how much has just taken off and happened for you this year, though I know it’s taken a long time for it to come together. CP: Yep the 9 year overnight success, Yea, I always joke. And I tell people this isn’t a hobby this is a lifestyle and this is truly what I feel like I was put on this earth to do as weird as that sounds. I was never the little girl that dreamed of her wedding, I was dreaming of the Opry and the ACM, CMA’s and making albums and that’s just where I truly wanted to be.

Courtesy Big Machine Records

I just want to be real, that’s just really what I’m going for in everything that I do.”

Carly, I know you started playing in a bluegrass band @ only 11, what got you started in music to begin with?

It’s exactly that truth and transparency that has endeared Carly to those who have heard her songs or had the chance to meet her, Hushh got a chance to talk about the amazing whirlwind she has been on in the last year, going from clubs to stadiums. Carly has embraced the last year with unwavering determination, continuing to prove why her first ACM Awards nomination for New Female Vocalist of the Year is so well deserved. Amazingly, you’re about to perform for the 50th time at the Grand Ole Opry in just a few short years! So what is it that you absolutely love about playing at the Opry and how hard is to get asked to play there?

CP: I truly have never known a day that I did not want to sing and love country music. And my mom says that the ONLY thing that would keep me from crying as a baby was country music. I come from a family of music lovers, my grandparents loved country music and loved bluegrass, and just from a really young age I sang all the time and my parents just knew that’s what I wanted to do and ya know as a little girl I did lots of different contests & sang karaoke and this bluegrass band just fell in my lap when I was about 11 and I did that for the next 5 years.

CP: Oh gosh, all I ever wanted to do was sing at the Opry, that was kind of the ultimate for me, and there’s videos of me 5, 6, 7 years old telling my parents and grand parents I was going to sing on the Opry one day. And I feel like it is the biggest honor that you can have as a country music artist. I believe that it’s the most important stage any of us will ever play and every single person who has had anything to do with country music has played there. It is a huge honor and not a lot of people get ask to play, the fact that I was asked to play before I had a record deal or a song on the radio, because they really believed in what I was doing early on, it’s a huge deal and I really believe they were a key part of the beginning of my story.

Your single “Every Little Thing” achieved NO 1 last year making you the 3rd female artist to do that in the last 11 years, Carrie being one of the ladies to do it along with Kelsea Ballerini who you have actually opened for. CP: Kelsea’s the first artist that really took me under her wing, we became pretty good girlfriends and now she’s one of my dearest friends, she believed in what I was doing before I had a record deal or anything, and about the time that the Opry came on as to letting me play there, she started taking me out on the road when she didn’t have to and letting me open her shows. Yea and I was following her bus in a 15 passenger van, and she would let me ride her bus at night so that I could sleep! She’s the best and she continues to just be somebody that I know I can go to and talk things out, because what I’m finding is when you get into this, you don’t really know unless you’ve been through it and she’s been so kind to just be my sounding board for the “Oh my gosh how do you handle this or handle that”. What piece of advise would you give to someone who aspires to do what you do? CP: I think my biggest message through my story even if you aren’t chasing the particular career that I am, but you have a dream that you are chasing... [is] that everyone can tell you no and tell you that you’re not good enough, I mean, I’ve been told “no” more times than I can count. I’ve been told to move home, I’ve been told it’s never going to happen. “Every Little Thing”, the very song that changed my entire life was passed on by the majority of the record labels and management teams 2 weeks prior to it getting on to Sirus XM’s “The Highway”. I’ve been very honest about how much people didn’t think I was going to work, and you just have to believe and work as hard as you can and build your brand, always believing that you can do it. You know, it’s funny now, I feel like the song has done allot just for artists in town. It’s considered a rule breaking song, which is hilarious to me, because all it is, is just a real transparent heartbreak ballad, but for some reason nobody thought that could break a female artist. And so I am very honored and proud to say that if that’s a rule breaker, I Love it!

I’ve dreamed of what it would be like to have a No. 1 song since I moved to Nashville,” shared Carly. “If I am living proof of anything, it’s that one song can change everything. I have experienced that with my peers over the years and have listened to the stories behind the songs that changed other people’s lives, but I had no idea that ‘Every Little Thing’ was going to be that song for me. Now, I would really love to know how touring this year has been so far, getting to open for Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan then Thomas Rhett & Rascal Flatts! CP: Oh goodness! I feel like the luckiest girl in the world. I mean I’m literally the female on arguable the biggest tours of the year. Just to be able to be on tour with any one of these guys and these artists would be amazing but to get to tour with all of them and be the only girl! I’m such a huge fan of Luke, I’m such a huge fan of Blake, a fan of Rascal Flats, Thomas Rhett, all these guys and I’m getting to learn so much out on the road. They are giving me experiences some artists wait years to have. I will go from last year in December playing clubs in front of Bret Young to in November [this year] playing stadiums in front of Luke Bryan- in one year! And that’s crazy! It’s just, again, I feel like I don’t understand what is happening. It’s hard to keep up, honestly it really is hard to process it all. I understand now what people talk about when they say the roller coaster and the storm of this, cause once it goes you kind of just have to hang on.

So is there anything you take with you or things that you do to help you survive the hectic schedule of being on tour? CP: I’m a big runner, so I always bring running shoes and try to do that even if I’m running stairs at the arena or just running in to town, kind of just depends on the day. I love to read so I bring a lot of books, and my band, truly they have been with me and been my best friends for a really long time so we really love hanging out and love touring together. So I hang out allot with them and I feel like they keep me centered and keep me sane. What book are you reading right now? CP: Right now I’m reading, I just started this new one, I’m really into self [motivation] books, I’m reading “Girl Wash Your Face” is what it’s called, it says “Stop believing the lies about who you are so you can become who you were meant to be”. It’s on the best seller list right now.

What has been the most amazing venue you have on the schedule this year that you’re just excited to be at? CP: Oh my yes! I get to play 2 nights at Rigley Field with Luke Bryan. So that’s interesting. And then I’m originally from a small town in Kentucky that’s very near to Cincinnati and I’m crossing off my bucket list venue, it’s called River Bend Music Center. It’s in Northern Kentucky, and that’s the venue that I saw my first concert at, and the venue that I dreamed of as a little girl playing and I finally get to do that with Rascal Flatts. It’s going to be pretty huge [for me] so I’m glad I have all of this year to prepare myself for that! Oh and I’m also playing the stadium at CMA Music Fest! I was playing on one of the little tiny stages last year and in one year I’m playing the stadium so that will be pretty crazy. Do you have any plans of coming full circle and playing again at Dollywood anytime soon? CP: That has to happen! I think I’m just waiting for the right time to do it. I know that I have a show in Pigeon Forge at the end of this year which I’m really excited about! But I think I have this little dream that maybe I can somehow convince Dolly to come sing with me at Dollywood. To be determined on that one. Carly Pearce’s Guide to Nashville Brought to you by:

Born into the bluegrass brawn of Kentucky, Carly Pearce has never known a moment that country music wasn’t her destined path. At the young age of 11, she began touring with a local band. By 16, she quit high school for a job performing at Dollywood while being homeschooled before moving to Nashville, working odd jobs and playing songwriter rounds for the last nine years. Nashville has suited her well as her debut single “Every Little Thing” found its way to No. 1 on the country music charts in 2017. Carly’s career is going places, but for Nashville’s sake, we sure hope she sticks around.

IN YOUR EYES, WHAT MAKES NASHVILLE UNIQUE? Nashville is the perfect blend of city life and Southern charm. I feel like I get the best of both words. A little country, a little city. :)

Fall Creek

Falls by Beth Patton

Fall Creek Falls state park is 26,000 breath-taking acres on top of the Cumberland Plateau. The thick forest frames the beautiful creeks, hiking and bike trails, falls, gorges and much more. My family and I recently rented a fisherman’s cabin right on the Fall Creek Lake. We hiked and explored, but my favorite time was on the porch in the evenings where we talked, laughed and enjoyed the view of the glassy lake. The canopy challenge and the swimming pool do not open until Memorial Day, but the boys had a blast paddling about in their kayaks. Chris fished and Beau took pictures. There will be a return trip! 34

6 T HI N G S TO KNOW ABO UT PI TCH ING A T E NT Camping provides the perfect opportunity to get in touch with nature and disconnect from the daily grind. Camping is a timeless tradition forged by cooking over portable stoves, foregoing indoor plumbing and sleeping under the stars. A 2015 survey from Kampgrounds of America (KOA) said camping attracts people looking for an opportunity to explore the many wonders of the environment. The great outdoors affords people an opportunity to recharge in the peace and quiet of natural surroundings. Results from the 2017 North American Camping Report found an increasing number of people say they plan to camp more, and camping is helping to add more balance to a person’s life. Currently, 75 million households in the United States include active campers. Households in western Canada are likely to go camping, and data from Statistics Canada points out that camping rates increase with income. Although there are many ways to camp, tents are often key components of camping trips. Learning to pitch a tent correctly is an important part of successful camping. Here’s how to become a tent-pitching pro. 1. Purchase a freestanding tent. While there are many variations to tent designs and ultralight backpackers may prefer a tarp or another non-freestanding device, tents that are able to stand on their own are easier to set up. Many tent designs have two poles and fabric that creates a dome shape and are relatively easy and straightforward to set up in just a few minutes. 2. Practice at home. Before arriving at the campsite, learn to recognize the parts and instructions for your particular tent. Make sure all equipment is present and in working order. 3. Buy a footprint. Many tent floors are sturdy, but campers can always use a little extra protection against the ground. Footprints are essentially a tarp that fits underneath the floor of the tent as an extra layer of protection, advises REI. They should be slightly smaller than the area of the tent. 4. Scope out the tent location. Avoid sites littered with sticks, stones, roots, or branches. Stay away from low-lying areas that may get soggy in rain storms. Look for natural windbreaks, and place the tent so the side that has the strongest pole structure is facing the wind. 5. Make it a team effort. Enlist a helper or two to set up the tent. Ensure all zippers are closed when erecting the tent. Try to push poles through openings instead of pulling on them. Allow for some wiggle room when extending the poles. Guy-lines should follow the seams of the tent where possible, and lines should be pegged down back to front. Guy-lines help keep tents sturdy and also keep a rain fly away from the tent body to minimize leakage, according to the Appalachian Mountain Club. 6. Use daylight to your advantage. Set up the tent while it is light outside, and outfit it with anything that will be needed in the middle of the night, such as a lantern and other gear. Camping is easier when people can erect a tent swiftly and accurately. So get out and give it try!

Proper Nutrition = Healthy Lifestyle

I have many patients ask me, “What is the best way to keep my long term weight loss goals from taking the back seat to my busy family life?”. It is a question and struggle that almost all of us have had at some point. The best advice that I have is, in one word, “preplanning”. Yes, planning for the week ahead does take time and thought. As the week unravels, you will be singing your own praises because you were able to conquer time and logistic obstacles with healthy food alternatives. What I recommend to patients is, to grab some snack-sized seal-able bags and divide fruits, vegetables, pretzels, granola, etc. just before the week begins. Measuring out items into these bags provides you with a reasonable portion and you know exactly how many calories you are consuming. This is convenient for side items for a work lunch or for a snack while you play chauffeur to your children’s activity schedules. If you must grab something from fast food or at a restaurant, make good decisions. Choose a side salad instead of fries. Order your sandwich without cheese,

mayonnaise, or other high calorie sauces. If there is not an option for a breaded bun substitute, only eat the top or bottom side of the bun. If you order a salad, make sure it isn’t covered with cheese, croûtons, bacon, and/or other high calorie/fat items that sabotage the whole purpose of eating a salad. Make sure the salad has a lean protein on it if it is an entree. Only add small amounts of the dressing to the salad as needed, instead of the whole package. Chances are you won’t even use half of the portion provided to you, and you just saved yourself lots of calories. Small changes add up to big results! Losing weight or maintaining your ideal weight is something that has to be pursued continually, even when family and work responsibilities demand your time and attention. The process of change and maintenance by means of goal-setting is ever-evolving and takes lots of re-evaluation. In order for something to work for you, it has to be adaptable to your personality, age, preferences, and yes… a busy schedule! Most importantly it is a must to have a

support team that can help you along the way. Our team of healthcare professionals at Premier are ready to help you work through your plans to reach your goals. We find nothing more rewarding in our job than seeing our patients achieve their dreams, one goal at a time. Call us today, and take the first step toward a healthier, happier you! MODEST MOUSE Tennessee Theatre Unusual among many indie rock/alternative bands of today, Modest Mouse has embedded its trippy and spacey music—part tangled guitar, part modern boogie—with what feels like a fully developed worldview, envisioning suburban and rural isolation through the eyes of a man at odds with the world around him. “Listening to Modest Mouse is a bit like looking at one of those warped mirrors in a boardwalk arcade,” wrote Salon online magazine contributor Joe Heim. “The sound is both familiar and perplexing, filled with pleasing hooks and dissonant, disorienting distortion.

SCRUFFY CITY SOUND @BEAUDANIELPATTON

I

believe we are currently living in the golden age of live music in Knoxville. The boom of craft breweries in the scruffy city brought along more stages to showcase live music. The people of Knoxville now have access to live music every day of the week, without visiting the same venue twice. Knoxville is host to nationally known groups coming through on tour stops, as well as local acts playing in bars and breweries. In the past year, I have seen many artists from my “concert bucket list” as well as discovered new talent, right here in Knoxville.

Of

‌ course, Thompson Bowling Arena is bringing in ‌ names like The Foo Fighters and Chris Stapleton, but our more historic venues like the Tennessee Theatre and The Bijou are hosting the likes of Modest Mouse and Colony House this year. In terms of smaller venues, Knoxville has The Mill and Mine, Barley’s, Pretentious Beer Company, Maple Hall, Scruffy City Hall, Preservation Pub, and Boyd’s Jig and Reel just to name a few. Although many of Knoxville’s shows steer towards an Americana and Folk genre, venues like the International and the Mill and Mine bring in rap, metal and electronic shows on a weekly basis. The variety of venues and artist catalog continually increase Knoxville’s reputation as a “must hit” stop for bands scheduling tours.

Best Shows of 2018 (so far) Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit - Tennessee Theatre Jason is revered as one of the best Americana Country songsmiths currently making music, and his show is certainly a reflection of that. I caught Jason’s first night at the Tennessee Theatre, from the moment he walked out and picked the first notes of “Anxiety” I knew he was about to put on a performance to remember. From the song selection, to the guitar clinic he put on, to the unity and tightness of the band, not a single note or word was out of place. When this man sings you know he is singing directly from his Alabama soul tackling subjects like the current state of politics and his own battle with sobriety. There was no intricate light show, confetti, or pyrotechnics - just the band’s signature sparrow and anchor logo in the background and the wall of sound they create. I had high expectations walking into the theatre, but Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit far exceeded those expectations.

The Wood Brothers - Bijou Theatre Oliver Wood, his younger brother Chris and (might as well be brother) Jano Rix just play damn good music with such a minimal crew. I had seen The Wood Brothers for the first time last year knowing little to nothing about them, but upon leaving I swore I would see them every time they came within an hour’s drive. Luckily they love Knoxville and the Bijou, so we can always depend on them stopping in for a night when they’re on the road. Although they were promoting their latest album “One Drop of Truth” they still played everything a fan wanted to hear from them. “Luckiest Man”, “Post Cards From Hell” and “I Got Loaded” are only a few of their hits they belted out that night. One staple of their show is the band gathering around a vintage microphone and playing a few bluegrass and gospel tunes which never fails to send chills down your spine. This section included my favorite moment of the night when Oliver brought out their touring crew that included managers, guitar techs, and sound engineers. They played “Midnight Special” by Creedence Clearwater Revival. With a slightly boozed up Knoxville crowd, everyone in the building joined in during the chorus - “Let the midnight special, Shine a ever lovin’ light on me!”. They certainly saved the best for last ending the whole night with a cover of “Ophelia” originated by “The Band” that had the entire room on their feet dancing to bouncing rhythm of the 70’s classic.

Tyler Childers - Bijou Theatre In the new wave of country music that is hitting the scene it can be hard to find artists with an original sound that stays true to country music, let alone artists that can tell stories like Cash, Hank, Willie or Waylon. As Tyler Childers has started to emerge, I firmly believe he is everything country music lovers are searching for. With his incredible songwriting combined with a unique storytelling ability, Tyler can paint a vivid picture of growing up in a coal mining town in eastern Kentucky, which is a common subject of his music. Tyler’s first trip to Knoxville was almost a year ago for an acoustic show at Boyd’s Jig & Reel for less than 100 people, but this time around he sold out all 700+ seats of the Bijou Theatre. His presence on stage did not waiver, whether it was with his full band or just him with his guitar. The entire crowd was fully engrossed in his sound from start to finish.
