space that could accommodate all of them – that is, until now. This summer you will likely notice a flurry of activity around the hospital’s campus as we officially break ground on KCH’s new Family Care Center. Our vision for this four-story, 88,000 square foot building could never have been realized without the generous support of the people and organizations who have donated money to help get it off the ground. Inside you will find a postage-paid response card and we hope you will consider donating to our Great Expectations capital building campaign. The feature story on pages 3 and 4 highlights the services that will be offered in the new building including a state-of-the-art birthing center that will take up the entire second floor and feature eight LDRP suites. Other floors will house family practice, obstetrics and gynecology, cardiology, and pediatric providers’ offices as well as women’s diagnostic imaging and cardiac rehabilitation. A skywalk to the hospital will allow convenient access between the two buildings. We hope you are as excited as we are about KCH’s investment in the health and wellness of this community both now and for many years to come.

The Foundation for Knox Community Hospital

As plans began developing for a new Family Care Center on the campus of Knox Community Hospital, The Foundation for KCH, an independent nonprofit organization that raises money and support for KCH, began discussing how best to develop community support for such an important capital project. The total cost of the project, including both new construction and the renovation of existing space is estimated to be approximately $45 million. While that is certainly a significant investment, The Foundation was confident that the community would come together to support this expansion of healthcare services in Knox County. That confidence was well-placed, as to date nearly $10 million in lead gifts and pledges has been raised by The Foundation before construction has even begun. “Significant lead gifts and pledges from organizations like Ariel Foundation and corporate partners such as First-Knox National Bank have been instrumental in getting this project off the ground,” said Charlie Brenneman, Chair of The Foundation

for KCH and a member of the KCH Board of Trustees. “Additionally, Ann and Ted Schnormeier, who have long supported our work, made a very generous gift toward this project just before Ann passed away last year. We are thrilled that Ann’s legacy will live on through this project and the many others she and Ted have supported over the years.” Ann Schnormeier served on both The Foundation and KCH boards for many years. So far, more than fifty donors, organizations, and corporations have pledged financial support to the Family Care Center through The Foundation. The Foundation recently launched a new four-year campaign to support the expansion project and is asking that the community join these lead gift donors by making a contribution or pledge to the Great Expectations campaign. A postage-paid response card can be found inside this newsletter, and The Foundation will recognize all donations of any size. Details about the campaign and additional information can be found at www.KCH.org/Foundation, or by contacting The Foundation for Knox Community Hospital at 740.393.9602.

FAMILY

CARE

CENTER BREAKS GROUND

It’s been a long time in the making, but on July 16, Knox Community Hospital finally broke ground on a four-story, 88,000 square foot building called the Family Care Center.

New building to focus on family

we hope they will continue to trust KCH to care for their health needs as their families grow and develop.”

Behner went on to explain the heart of a community hospital’s mission is to serve the emergency needs of residents, but also allow for family-centered care close to home. Through the addition of family practice physicians, obstetricians/ gynecologists and a pediatrician, the hospital is poised to care for its youngest patients starting in the womb and through adulthood.

Taking that philosophy to heart meant taking a good, hard look at the current birthing center and making sure there were enough providers to care for patients in service lines with a higher demand. At center stage in the new building, as well as the entire second floor, is the birthing center which will feature eight rooms where mothers can labor, deliver, recover and spend postpartum time with their new family. The ‘homestyle’ rooms feature an area for privacy and personal comfort for mom as well as a space for family. The state-of-the-art rooms also feature a dedicated clinical area for providers to care for mom and baby. A surgical suite will also be available to accommodate scheduled and emergent cesarean births.

“While many community hospitals look at shutting down their maternity wards because they aren’t financially feasible, we took a different approach,” said Behner. “We want to give every family a great start in life, and

“The idea behind the building and what services it should encompass went through several stages,” explained Bruce Behner, Chief Operating Officer. “As the hospital began to acquire practices it made sense to consolidate them into one space.”

feature cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation. Recognizing that mental health plays a big role in a person’s overall health, KCH is making behavioral health care as seamless and accessible as possible by conveniently offering mental health therapists in the new building. “There are a number of specialty lines we have wanted to develop and now we have the space and providers to do it,” said Ron Stull, Director of Building Services. Plans are already being developed for what will happen to space vacated by departments moving into the new building including expanding services for geriatrics, neurology, rheumatology, bariatrics and additional beds for New Vision, a program that offers medical stabilization for those with addiction issues. The Family Care Center, which will be built next to the pavilion, will feature an entrance off Yauger Rd. as well as a skywalk into the hospital – offering quick access should any emergencies arise. Stull said the building will be designed with energy efficiency in mind – including the use of LED lights, and motion sensor sinks and lights. “One unique feature of the building will be a patio area,” Stull added. “It will be a place for patients and families to sit down and relax and it will also allow for a lot of natural light on the ground floor.”

A priority throughout construction will be as little interruption as possible to patients and employees. “It’s all about the timing,” Stull said. “The first step is building the employee parking lot, so they have a place to park through the transition.” Stull says another priority will be working closely with construction partners to make sure the project stays within its $45 million budget. Although much of the project is out for bid, Stull hopes to help Knox County’s economy by working with as many local companies, subcontractors and vendors as possible. With nearly $10 million in lead gifts and pledges already raised, the hospital’s Foundation recently launched a four-year campaign to support the expansion project aptly named Great Expectations. “We believe this expansion will make KCH an even more valuable resource for the community,” said Bruce White, Chief Executive Officer. “Knox County is already such a great place to live, work and raise a family. This project is an important way we can make sure it stays that way for many years to come.”

Expanding services to meet our community's needs n OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY KCH has recently added several new OB/Gyn providers to better meet the needs of our community. KCH now has five physicians specializing on obstetrics and/or gynecology—two male, and three female—as well as a Certified Nurse Midwife who is able to offer women of all ages a unique perspective on their care, and partners with expectant mothers who are seeking midwifery care during their delivery process at KCH.

n PEDIATRICS KCH is pleased to have recently added an employed Pediatrician, Dr. Svetlana Titishina (“Dr. Lana”) to our medical staff. Dr. Lana offers regular check-ups; counseling and medical treatment of ADHD, depression, and anxiety; counseling for weight management; and routine childhood vaccinations in the office at the time of your visit. An additional pediatrician is expected to join KCH later this year.

n FAMILY MEDICINE Access to primary care is an important part of keeping every family healthy. By bringing together a number of Family Medicine physicians and advanced practice providers into one location, KCH hopes to allow more convenient access, easier scheduling of appointments, and reduced wait times.

n BIRTHING CENTER A brand-new, state-of-the-art Birthing Center will mean a convenient home-like atmosphere in which families can welcome new additions. Spacious rooms, Jacuzzi tubs, and other amenities will provide comfort and convenience for birthing families, while the latest technology and highly skilled clinical staff will ensure the highest-quality care.

KEEPING YOUR FAMILY SAFE AROUND WATER A dip in the pool is a refreshing way to beat the summer heat. But, rising temperatures also increase the risk for accidents around pools and bodies of water. We want you and your family to be safe this summer and share the following tips to keep in mind.

n Never leave a child unattended

n Don’t rely on swimming aids

n Make sure pools and hot tubs

around water. This includes giving them your undivided attention when you are supervising them, even if a lifeguard is also present.

like flotation devices to keep your child safe.

feature drain covers to prevent entrapment as well as a safety vacuum release.

n Never swim alone, always have a buddy and keep an eye on each other.

n Learn basic CPR and water rescue skills. You never know when they may come in handy.

n Backyard pools should have proper safety precautions in place. Pools should be fenced in with a gate that locks. If the pool has a cover, it should also have an alarm.

n Kids love to jump in head first, literally. Teach them what areas of a pool or lake are safe for diving.

n If you are boating, make sure everyone on board has a Coast Guard approved life vest.
