It’s always a pleasure to welcome new physicians to the Mount Vernon community and we are pleased to announce the addition of obstetrician/gynecologist Dr. Kristen Witham to the KCH family.

Dr. Witham completed medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, Florida and her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Doctors Hospital in Columbus.

Her professional interests include women’s health education, high- and low-risk obstetrics, robotics and minimally invasive surgery.

“I was inspired to pursue the field of medicine and become a doctor after my cousin was in a serious car accident while I was in high school,” she said.

“My family spent a significant amount of time in the hospital and I was impressed with the knowledge and empathy of his team.”

Although she knew she wanted to care for people, she wasn’t sure upon entering medical school what field of medicine she wanted to pursue.

“In my third year of medical school I fell in love with obstetrics and gynecology on my first day of my rotation,” she said.

“I delivered a baby and knew that’s what I wanted to do. I have the privilege of being there for the most important day in many people’s lives — when they bring a child into the world.”

When seeking out where to set up her practice, Dr. Witham and her husband were drawn to Mount Vernon.

“We love the area and knew it would be a great place to raise our two children,” she said. “I’m looking forward to building relationships with people in the community.”

Dr. Witham will focus her practice on routine prenatal care; birth control; treatment and diagnosis of urinary incontinence; menopausal symptoms and conditions; infertility; and routine preventive screenings including pap smears, pelvic exams, breast exams and testing for sexually transmitted diseases.

Light and Easy Cauliflower Gratin Ingredients: • 1 medium head cauliflower, cut into small florets (about 5 cups) • ¼ cup half and half cream • ¼ tsp. kosher salt • Fresh cracked black pepper, to taste • P inch nutmeg • 2 oz. shredded light Havarti cheese • 1 TBSP bread crumbs • Cooking spray

Steps: 1. P reheat oven to 350 degrees F 2. Place cauliflower florets in a 9x9 baking dish. Whisk half and half, salt, black pepper and nutmeg, then pour over the cauliflower.

3. Cover with aluminum foil and bake until tender, about 40 minutes. Remove foil, sprinkle with shredded cheese and breadcrumbs. Lightly spray with cooking spray and bake 3 to 5 more minutes.

Winter safety awareness Tips for staying safe

Ready or not winter weather is on its way. While there’s no surefire way to predict when the first big snowfall will hit, there are some import ant safety measures you should take before temperatures dip into negative numbers.

When it comes to your home, having your furnace checked annually for leaks and cracks is a must. A cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide, an odorless and colorless gas that can cause headaches, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain and confusion. Left unchecked, high concentrations of carbon monoxide can be life-threatening.

One easy way to prevent a carbon dioxide emergency is to have a carbon monoxide detector on

each level of your home. Equally important is the presence of smoke detectors on each floor. These can be purchased online and at home improvement stores and some models offer both life-saving options in one combined detector.

Remember, you still have to change the batteries annually if your detectors are not hardwired.

Wood burning fireplaces are making a comeback and they require more maintenance than their gas log equivalents. Wood burners require regular cleaning and chimney inspections to make sure you don’t have a buildup of soot in your chimney that could put your home at risk for a fire.

Keeping driveways and walkways clear of snow and ice can help

prevent someone from slipping and falling. Cat litter or sand can be used to gain traction on slippery spots and driveway salt can help melt the ice.

Don’t forget to dress for the weather when you go outside. This means layering up and wearing ear protection, boots and gloves to protect your extremities from frostbite. Thermal injuries to the skin can occur in a very short period of time in extremely cold weather. Pay attention to the temperature, and don’t forget to factor in the wind chill, when planning to spend any extended time outdoors.

While you may not be able to stop winter from coming, with the above tips we hope you will be ready for it when it does.
