LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
Dear Friends of Adena Health Foundation, Last October, I attended Adena Health System’s grand opening of the Carlisle Building. I was proud to join many community members seated along South Paint Street to see a magnificent landmark restored to its former glory. But what gave me the most pride was knowing that the building’s dedication wasn’t as much to mark the completion of a project as it was to celebrate the beginning of an era – a renaissance for Chillicothe commerce; a better bridge to our community partners; and an investment in the future of our region’s health care. It’s an exciting time for Adena, and I hope you share that sentiment. The accomplishments that Adena Health Foundation has achieved over the last several years, with your ardent support, have been many. The Foundation’s first capital campaign raised $5 million in support of PACCAR Medical Education Center. The Foundation’s 21st Century Campaign raised more than $900,000 for robotic surgery. And because of the pathways created by PACCAR Medical Education Center, Adena Health System has emerged as a Teaching Hospital. In fact, without a thriving Medical Education Program, the vision for renovation of the Carlisle Building might not have been conceived.
I am pleased to share with you our 2015 Annual Report. This report isn’t just a summary of the Foundation’s achievements, but it is a celebration of you, the donor whose steadfast support helps us improve the lives of those we are privileged to serve every day. In 2015, total Foundation revenue was $1.2 million. Through your generosity, we were able to direct nearly $500,000 to assist charity patients, purchase patient care equipment and materials for the hospital, and award college scholarships to students pursuing healthcare professions. As board members and stewards of Adena Health Foundation, we take great pride in fostering the spirit of giving that is so much a part of our region, while ensuring your charitable giving has a direct impact on the patients we serve. Thank you for your continued support. Sincerely,
Lana Fairchild Chair & President

“
THROUGH GIVING, YOU HELP MEET THE NEEDS OF PEOPLE IN SOUTHERN OHIO.” 3
Good for Community ABOUT THE FOUNDATION Adena Health Foundation was created on January 7, 2002 by the Board of Trustees of Adena Health System to support its mission and charitable purposes. The Foundation is separately incorporated as tax-exempt under IRC 501(c)(3) and as a supporting organization under IRC 509(a)(3). Contributions to the Foundation are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
n
A focal point for giving for health and patient care;
n
T ranslate gifts into special projects in a health system that improves health and wellness in the community;
n
Maintain funds for donors who designate their gifts for special programs and the unique needs of our patients;
Our Southern Ohio region is fortunate that Adena Health System is locally managed and controlled, as it has been since 1895. It is financially healthy and growing, which enables it to continually expand healthcare services to area residents. By supporting the Foundation and donating close to home, you are helping Adena fulfill its obligation to meet the ever-increasing demand for quality healthcare in our area.
n
Reduce the health system’s need to borrow for new facilities, renovations and equipment, thereby freeing up operating revenue for expanding patient care; and
“Philanthropy” translates from Greek to mean “love for mankind.” Adena Health Foundation broadens the meaning by creating an environment for giving that satisfies a donor’s desire to make good things happen close to home. Because we believe that everyone in Southern Ohio deserves access to the best healthcare close to home, the Foundation serves five important functions:
n
Provide accountability to donors.
Since its inception, the Foundation has received over $16.8 million in philanthropic support and grants, including that which is donated directly to the Health System. Based upon current net assets of $4,080,187, annual mission-related expenditures have averaged $981,445 per year. Foundation operating expenses are paid directly by Adena Health System. For donors, this means that 100% of their contributions are spent according to the donor’s wishes. The Foundation has no donor-advised funds or permanent endowments. The Board’s expectation is that donations are to be used as intended by the donor for impact now, rather for endowment building. What drives us is what constantly challenges us – to make Adena the best healthcare system for you. Powered by contributions from individuals, businesses and grants, in 2015, we made expenditures of $485,187 on mission purposes that include:
“
n
S cholarships totaling $85,400 to 62 students studying to become healthcare professionals; fields of study and number of students were Occupational Therapy (5), Pharmacy (7), Physical Therapy (3), Dietetics (1), Medicine (2), Radiology (3), Laboratory Technology (1) and Nursing (40);
n
ssisting patients who could not afford their healthcare, medical A supplies, prosthetics, prescriptions and medical travel costs;
n
early $80,000 in assistance to 542 hospice patients whose N families could not afford their end-of-life care;
n
igs from the Wig Fund for charity-qualified patients who W experienced hair loss during radiation and chemotherapy treatments;
n
Funeral expenses for some who had no next of kin or assets;
n
afeteria and gas vouchers to patients and families who could not C afford numerous trips to and from their hometowns, or meals while they stayed with their loved one for extended periods in the hospital;
n
as vouchers to cancer patients and cardio-pulmonary rehab G patients who could otherwise not keep up with their treatments or rehabilitation program due to travel costs;
n
ew baby starter supplies to needy parents and new safe sleep N sacks for all babies born at Adena; and
n
Education and travel costs for clinical staff education.
GIVING NOURISHES BELIEF IN OTHERS.”

SUPPORTING THE NEEDS OF SOUTHERN OHIO THROUGH CAPITAL FUNDRAISING The Foundation provides a philanthropic perspective for Adena Health System’s capital planning process and maintains a state of readiness for conducting capital campaigns. The 21st Century Campaign for advanced medical equipment, which started in 2013, provided $900,000 to help the Health System implement the robotic-assisted surgery program. By the end of 2015, 1,171 patients had benefitted from this new surgical capability, a growth of 454 in one year. Also, last year, Intuitive (the company that makes the surgical robot), named Adena as one of two Intuitive Epicenters in Ohio (one of 44 in the nation). This means that surgeons from other hospitals are coming to Adena to train in using the technology… just another example of Adena being a Teaching Hospital. In all, our surgeons perform 20 different kinds of robotic-assisted surgeries with hysterectomies and gall bladder procedures accounting for more than half. Since Adena’s introduction of robotic surgery in 2012, 1,171 patients have benefited from this minimally invasive surgery. One of them was Frankfort, Ohio native Darryl. His story is below.
Darryl’s Story Darryl wasn’t expecting any surprises when he commemorated his fiftieth birthday with a colonoscopy screening. But when the results of the screening revealed Darryl had a mass, the news was at least easier to absorb when he learned that a minimally-invasive procedure could remove the mass, and that fellow “local boy” Dr. Bill Sever would do the surgery. Darryl had known Bill Sever from their days growing up in Frankfort and playing sports at Adena High School. Decades would pass before the two would reconnect again, and that was when friends recommended Darryl see Dr. Sever for his care. But even as Dr. Sever reviewed the benefits of robotic surgery, Darryl, who had never before had surgery, was still a bit nervous.
“I figured I would be laid up, sore, not able to move and stuck in bed for several weeks,” Darryl said. But Darryl’s fears were allayed when he found out he would have only three small incisions and be back to normal activities in about two weeks. And that’s just what happened. Darryl had his surgery on Wednesday, was discharged Thursday, enjoyed watching OSU in the Fiesta Bowl Saturday and went to church Sunday. Within two weeks, Darryl returned to work and resumed his normal routine.
“
I WAS SURPRISED BY HOW QUICK RECOVERY REALLY WAS. AND I DIDN’T HAVE TO TRAVEL 60 MILES TO COLUMBUS TO GET HEALTHCARE. IT’S RIGHT HERE.” – Darryl
“I was surprised by how quick recovery really was,” Darryl said of his successful robotic surgery experience. “And I didn’t have to travel 60 miles to Columbus to get healthcare. It’s right here.”

Good for Education ADENA EMERGES AS A TEACHING HOSPITAL
“
During our first capital campaign in 2006, to which the PACCAR Foundation contributed $1 million toward the $15 million Medical Education Center project, the Foundation raised an additional $4.25 million to complete the portion needed from philanthropy.
Center and in the hospital. We are protecting our service region from the continuing national shortage of nurses. Likewise, by teaching medical students and residents, we will protect this region from the imminent national shortage of physicians.
The PACCAR Medical Education Center became the tool that enabled Adena Health System to become a Teaching Hospital. Bachelor’s degree nursing students, students in allied health professions, third- and fourth-year medical students and medical residents in four residency programs are making use of the Center for classroom work, and, especially the human patient simulation lab. The expectation of our physicians and staff to teach contributes to continuous improvements in quality of care and patient safety.
Adena’s Medical Residency Programs began in 2012, and now feature Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and a Transitional Program. Initially with zero applicants, Medical Education Director Dr. David Towle reached out to colleagues at medical schools and recruited six newly-graduated physicians. Last year, there were 16 openings for residency positions at Adena, for which we received more than 600 applicants. What a testament to the power of a Teaching Hospital!
Since opening the PACCAR Medical Education Center in 2008, the proportion of BSN-prepared nurses at Adena has doubled from 20% to 40%. More than 800 of the 2,500 students at the Ohio University-Chillicothe branch are in pre-nursing or nursing programs. Their clinical training is conducted at the PACCAR Medical Education
The PACCAR Medical Education Center is accredited by the Ohio State Medical Association and the American Osteopathic Association as provider for Continuing Medical Education. This makes Adena and Chillicothe a destination for training from other hospitals in Ohio and other states.
WE MAKE A LIVING BY WHAT WE GET, BUT WE MAKE A LIFE BY WHAT WE GIVE.”

PACCAR MEDICAL EDUCATION CENTER A Look Behind the Curtain, a Look Ahead Step inside the David Meade Massey Virtual Hospital and Dave Smith, RN, Simulation Coordinator, will likely be the first human you encounter in a unit caring for five adult simulated patients.
“A natural born inventor/tinkerer, David is the perfect employee for our simulation center,” said Dr. David Towle, Director of Medical Education. “He’s the right person for the right job.”
Often referred to as the “wizard behind the curtain”, Dave commands the sophisticated computer technology that brings the simulation lab to life. On this day, however, he shows the shell of a plastic upper torso and then produces a very lifelike thoracic cavity, complete with ribcage, heart and lungs. This is his creation. He explains how he sculpted the ribcage from a number of plaster casts and how the science of exacting the heart and lungs was made possible by precise amounts of Ballistic gelatin, water and controlled temperatures. A pig heart purchased from a local butcher helped Dave replicate and complete the organs housed in the chest cavity, so detailed, the arteries are imprinted in the cast. This innovation now provides an enhanced level of learning for medical professionals.
In his role at the Virtual Hospital, Dave has played no small part in PACCAR Medical Education Center’s success. As a critical care nurse, Dave’s former background in the military, and as a plastics industrial engineer, may, on the surface, seem an unlikely combination for work in a patient simulation lab. However, this unique blend of skills has proven valuable. Particularly with a thriving graduate medical education program and Adena’s emergence as a Teaching Hospital, the demand for innovative technology and on innovative technology has never been greater.
Dave Smith’s thoracic cavity at work.
Call it growing pains, but even the most state-of-the-art patient simulators usually succumb to the unexpected. Dave’s primary duties,
After one million chest compressions, 100,000 ventilations and over 4,000 hours of simulation, this patient simulator will soon be discharged.
which include writing codes for the simulators and creating any of 70,000 possible patient responses for unsuspecting students are sometimes put on hold for repairs--sewing eyelids, replacing computer chips, fixing computer glitches. Most of these procedures are successful and in some cases, Dave has helped the manufacturer pinpoint and correct a problem. But as warranties on some of the “older” patients can cost over $12,000 a year, plans are underway to replace at least two of the mannequins in order to acquire two new patient simulators in 2016 at a total cost of $162,000. Adena Health Foundation and Adena Health System will help offset this necessary cost to keep a burgeoning medical education program ahead of the curve. Dr. Towle sees a viable future ahead for PACCAR, the result of Adena’s collective dedication to medical education. “PACCAR should soon become a regional leader in medical simulation not just for our medical teammates, but for law enforcement, emergency medical services and our local military members.” And Dr. Towle doesn’t mince words when it comes to Dave Smith. “I hope he never leaves!”
“
ADENA’S PACCAR MEDICAL EDUCATION CENTER IS THE FLAGSHIP FOR MEDICAL, NURSING AND ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION THROUGHOUT THE REGION.”

VOLUNTEER ADVISORY COUNCIL A dedicated team of adult and teenage volunteers continue to make the Volunteer Advisory Council (VAC) a tremendously valuable resource for Adena. Volunteers assist with countless tasks throughout the hospital, including patient transport and discharge, mail delivery and the operation of the Sugarloaf Gift Shop. In 2015, the VAC donated $235,000, which was used to support the Volunteer Scholarship Fund and to purchase important equipment and patient comfort items for the hospital. Since the Foundation began keeping records, the VAC has contributed $3,678,259 in support of the hospital and the Foundation. Many abdominal and chest surgery patients benefit from receiving “Sir Koff-A-Lot” and “Heart” bears, made possible by the VAC. Maintenance of the fish tank in the Same Day Surgery waiting area is also funded by the VAC.

HOLIDAY SPIRITS IGNITED
FAMILY GIVING DOES GOOD
Every year, the Igniters Street Rod Club has visited Adena Regional Medical Center to share holiday cheer and teddy bears with patients. The Club started out visiting newborns and their families but since that first year, the visits have had a broader reach.
Father and Daughter Serve Up Smiles
“The first year we came to Adena with Santa Claus and a bunch of teddy bears, we soon discovered there weren’t many people to visit since the hospital tries to get everyone home for Christmas,” said Igniters member Jim Tribby. “So we were here and thought, let’s just go visit everyone in the hospital.”
There’s something about that familiar jingle that brings a smile to a face. And there were many smiles last summer when Anthony Allen parked his ice cream truck outside Adena Cancer Center last August to deliver sweet cool treats to patients and their caregivers.
That was nearly 20 years ago, and the annual Santa visits have continued ever since.
Named after his daughter who has sickle cell anemia, Antoinette’s Ice Cream truck is a way for Anthony to honor his daughter, while giving back to the community. Treats were free, thanks to NAPA Central Auto Parts and other businesses who make donations to cover the cost of the ice cream. Anthony couldn’t bear to see the pain his daughter Antoinette endured with sickle cell anemia. “To be with somebody when they are in pain and you can’t help is heartbreaking. I know what cancer patients go through and I’m happy to be able to provide a little something special to make their day a little better.”
SCHOOL GIVING DOES GOOD Southeastern Students Team Up to Fight Cancer Southeastern High School volleyball players and cheerleaders teamed up to raise $950 for Adena Cancer Center in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month in October. The athletes conducted several events, including a silent auction, luminary sale and “Serve for the Cure” volleyball game. Members of Southeastern High School’s
National Honor Society also demonstrated their support by visiting the Cancer Center as part of the group’s Random Acts of Kindness Day. The students donated ice cream and gas cards to cancer patients and 19 students knitted hats to donate to newborns at Adena Women and Children’s Center.

Good for Legacies THE SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENTS Endowment Funds may be designated from time-to-time by the Board of Directors. The minimum amount to establish a named fund is $20,000, which may be paid over a number of years. No endowment fund is considered “permanent,” because future needs may change and the original purpose for a fund may not always exist. The Catherine Evanoff Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established in 2011 by a $25,000 gift from the Volunteer Advisory Council to honor and memorialize the founder of the VAC. Earnings from this fund will benefit qualified students in degree programs for any direct patient care healthcare profession. The Dr. James R. Manchester Memorial Endowment for Imaging Technology Education was created in 2008 by Mrs. Eileen R. Manchester to honor the memory and accomplishments of the late Dr. James R. Manchester. Dr. Manchester is remembered as one of the first three radiologists in the Chillicothe Hospital’s X-Ray Department, and for introducing computers to the X-Ray Department of the Medical Center Hospital, known today as Adena Regional Medical Center. The Gordon F. Streicher Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established in 2003 by friends and family to honor the late Mr. Streicher for his 40 years of service to the hospital’s medical laboratory. This endowment perpetuates his passion for education by assisting students who choose medical laboratory technology careers. We encourage students who wish to enter the medical laboratory profession to apply for the Gordon F. Streicher Memorial Scholarship.

LEGACY GIVING We are very grateful for the future-oriented generosity of individuals who expressed their belief in our mission by including the Adena Health Foundation or the Adena Health System in their living trusts and estate plans: Burrel Adkins Reginald C. Blue Thomas A. Carlisle Ardith F. Conrad John H. Cooke Clyde I. Deffenbaugh Charles L. Franklin Marianne S. Franklin James R. Loel Dorothy A. McFarland Mary Skinner McGhee
Edna Mae Miller Leona M. Monce William B. Moore Virginia A. Perrin Robert E. Theobald Eugene F. Tomastik Robert E. Schillinger Robert & Louise Schrader Dorothy M. Smith Bertha A. Story Howard S. Young
Through their wills, estates, trusts and life insurance, these individuals have created lasting legacies that will serve healthcare in southern Ohio for years to come. Legacy giving requires professional assistance. Even during their lifetime, donors can redirect to charities a portion of their assets and estates that would otherwise pay taxes or estate fees. If doing good for healthcare and education aligns with your charitable interests and you have questions about how estate planning can help fulfill your intentions, please contact the Foundation and consult your professional advisor. Excellent information and calculators also are available on the Foundation’s website at www.adena.org/foundation.
