Since rebranding to Madison Health a year ago, we have seen tremendous growth in many of our services.

Emergencies do not care what your plans are, but we do.

I

n 2014, Madison Health implemented a change of flow in which patients seeking treatment in the emergency room bypassed the waiting area and were immediately placed into a bed. This change resulted in a decrease in time to be seen by an expert physician to 13 minutes or less.

Since the change of flow was put into place, the Emergency Department has seen an increase in the volume of patients as well as patient satisfaction scores.

“These changes have allowed us to more quickly meet the needs of each individual,” said Leanne Manring, Director of Emergency Services. “We are proud that our patient satisfaction scores put us in the top 10% of hospitals in our region. We work hard to give every patient the care and attention they need, as quickly as possible.”

n an effort to increase the availability of healthcare services, Madison Health is opening several satellite locations across Madison County.

For the first time in its 53 year history, the organization will have a permanent presence in Mount Sterling as well as expand further into London and West Jefferson.

“We have a solid foundation of putting the needs of our community first,” said Michael Browning, CFO at Madison Health. “For more than half a century, we have provided quality care in a convenient location in London. We are excited to broaden our scope and offer the same quality care even closer to many of our area residents.”

One specific location is less than a year in the making.

After expressing a need for more primary care presence in the village, representatives from Mount Sterling met with Madison Health leadership earlier this year to outline a plan.

On August 25, more than 100 community members and representatives from Madison Health and Mount Sterling gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony at the Mount Sterling Community Center.

The additional space will include room for family physician practice, rehabilitation services and a lab draw station.

Madison Health Sleep Lab and Mount Carmel

A

good night’s sleep is pivotal to a person’s day. It affects their ability to focus, comprehend, function and be productive, as well as their overall health and well-being.

While nights of restlessness due to various reasons, such as stress or anticipation, are common, it’s those that cannot sleep each night that are affected the most. According to the American Sleep Apnea Association, an estimated 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea and 80 percent of the moderate to severe cases go undiagnosed.

The first step in diagnosing an individual with sleep apnea is conducting a sleep study, which is ordered by a primary care physician. This is an overnight test that grades the quality of your sleep by monitoring the electrical activity of the brain, eye movement, muscle activity, heart rate, respiratory effort, air flow into the lungs and the oxygen levels. The data collected will allow the physician to diagnose the type of sleep apnea as well as the level of severity.

Medicine in September 2014. It has also increased because of the purchase of an advanced healthcare technology system, which is linked to Mount Carmel, according to Nadene Schlosser,

Director of Cardiopulmonary Services at Madison Health. The hospital staff can now electronically send the competed sleep study instantaneously to Mount Carmel’s lab, which has resulted in a much faster diagnosis.

In the past, it may have taken us three to four weeks to obtain a sleep study result,” said Schlosser. “Since we have partnered with Mount Carmel, we are receiving the results in as few as four to five days.”

One integral part of a sleep study is making the patient feel like they’re in the comfort of their own home in order to collect accurate results. Most sleep centers make sure each patient is as comfortable as possible, often providing televisions, radios, private bathrooms and other amenities similar to a hotel.

The Madison Health Sleep Lab is operated in conjunction with Mount Carmel Sleep Medicine so each patient receives a comprehensive treatment plan from a sleep medicine specialist to help them on their way to a better night’s rest and a healthier tomorrow.

“Since being diagnosed with a sleep disorder and starting on the prescribed treatment plan, my blood pressure is lower, I’ve lost weight and have more energy.”

Types of Sleep Apnea There are three types of sleep apnea: central, obstructive and mixed.

Central sleep apnea is present in 15 to 20%

Sleep Medicine The Madison Health Sleep Lab is no different, with Schlosser describing it as a “homey” hotel room with custom-made Amish furniture.

“We wanted to recreate an environment similar to their home sleeping environment and cater to each individual’s unique needs,” she added.

Madison Health’s commitment to quality care has grown the demand for Sleep Lab services. The area recently grew from one room to two and is a convenient location for local residents, realizing they don’t have to travel to receive the best available care.

Madison Health’s refreshed image and reputation in the community can be attributed to its ongoing partnership with the OSU/Mount Carmel Health Alliance which provides support, technology and resources to several hospital departments.

The collaboration between the Madison Health Sleep Lab and Mount Carmel Sleep Medicine is one important success story behind the partnership.

of patients. In central sleep apnea, the brain fails to send a signal to the muscles to breathe, causing apnea. This is usually treated successfully with medication.

Obstructive sleep apnea is the most

common form of apnea. It occurs in approximately 80% of apnea patients. In obstructive sleep apnea, the soft tissues in the rear of the throat collapse and close the airway, causing the patient to stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep cycle – sometimes up to hundreds of times per night. With each apnea event, the blood oxygen levels fall below normal. This sends a signal to the brain which aroused the person from sleep to resume normal breathing, but consequently, sleep is extremely fragmented and of poor quality.

Mixed apnea is a combination of both central and obstructive apnea.

Memorial Plaques Commemorate Dr. Martha Geib In honor of Dr. Martha Geib’s 50th birthday on July 14, Madison Health unveiled two plaques in her memory. The first plaque is positioned in the lobby of the Madison Health Primary Care practice and the other is placed outside of the hospital’s obstetrics department. On that special day, Dr. Geib was honored in a ceremony which included family members, friends, co-workers and patients.

The inscription reads, “In memory of Dr. Martha Geib, Pediatrician, in recognition of her service to the children of Madison County. Her warm smile and her genuine concern touched all who knew her. We treasure the memories of this healer, teacher and friend.”

Mona Flax Breast Cancer Endowment Fund The Fund was renamed earlier this year in memory of its founder and helps area residents receive breast care services regardless of their ability to pay. To date, the Fund has helped more than 160 women with breast care services ranging from treatment and physician bills to prosthetics and transportation.

Mona served as Director of the Foundation for 15 years and was a two-time breast cancer survivor. She spearheaded efforts to raise money and awareness about breast cancer in Madison County and helped raise $2 million to bring the latest digital equipment to the Battelle Breast Care Center at Madison Health.
