Established in 1924, Knox Grammar School offers an innovative approach to education within a caring environment. This strong culture of welcome and belonging remains a defining feature of Knox.

The achievements featured in this edition of The Thistle reflect both the breadth of school life and the values that guide it. They align closely with the Strategic Direction’s Areas of Focus: Students’ Experience, Staff, Community and Stewardship, and together, highlight the culture of endeavour, opportunity and excellence that defines our school.

Our commitment to educating young people is deeply rooted in our history. In 2026, Wahroonga Preparatory School marks 100 years of excellence in education; a century shaped by faith, community and a strong belief in the potential of every child.

Founded in 1926 as a Uniting Church school, Wahroonga Prep remains anchored in a clear and enduring purpose: to nurture young learners in a caring environment informed by Christian values and a sustained commitment to excellence.

This sense of purpose and connection is evident in the way students who are new to the School have begun their journey, forming friendships and adjusting confidently to life at Knox. Boarders joining the School have shown courage as they adapt to life away from home, embracing challenges and quickly finding their place.

The longstanding connection between Wahroonga Prep and Knox as Uniting Church schools was formally affirmed in 2015, when Wahroonga Prep joined the Knox community as its co-educational Pre-Kindergarten to Year 6 campus. Since then, the School continues to flourish, supported by a dedicated and highly professional staff.

Throughout the year, we look forward to sharing the centenary celebrations as we honour the past and recognise the strong foundations that continue to shape the future of Wahroonga Prep.

This edition also looks back on the outstanding achievements of the Class of 2025, including the performance of the TAS department in the HSC. The accomplishments of our graduating students reflect not only academic excellence, but also strength of character. Their successes are a testament to the School’s sustained commitment to teaching excellence, meaningful engagement and student achievement.

Beyond the classroom, sport and co-curricular opportunities continue to play an important role in school life. This edition features Basketball and Fencing, and it has been encouraging to see the pride with which students wear the Black and Blue. Across all teams, we see the inclusive and supportive culture of Knox.

Outdoor Education remains a vital part of the student experience, contributing to growth beyond the classroom. Across our campuses, several year groups have participated in camps and outdoor experiences, including the annual AFX Cadet Camp.

These programs challenge students to step outside their comfort zones, support their peers, build resilience and develop practical skills in unfamiliar environments. The appointment of a dedicated Operational Risk Manager and Director of Experiential Learning ensures these programs are thoughtfully designed, well supported and positioned for continued growth.

The performing arts are another highlight in this edition, with students and staff showcasing their energy and creativity across a range of performances. These productions bring together actors, musicians and technicians, exhibiting not only talent, but also the collaboration, care and discipline that underpin all of our co-curricular offerings.

Community life continues to be enriched through a full calendar of events – from the Anzac Memorial Service for the Old Knox Grammarians’ Association and the Ceremonial Parade of the Knox Ravenswood Army Cadet Unit, to Gala Day and our Back to Country Boarding event. These occasions provide meaningful opportunities for students, families and staff to come together and strengthen the ties that define our community.

They show how students, staff and parents contribute across many areas of school life, guided by shared priorities and a genuine commitment to making a positive difference. BATTLE OF THE BANDS Five bands contested the final of this Knox in Concert event held in the Wenkart Theatre in June. Congratulations to the 2026 winners, The General Managers.

YEAR 7 OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAM Year 7 campers enjoyed days of adventure and team building activities in the scenic Blue Mountains in May.

Boarding Community At the start of the year, our Boarding families came together for the Boarding Welcome Function that was held on the Boarders’ Terrace. In June, Back to Country provided another opportunity to celebrate as a community.

Passing-Out Parade With gratitude, we acknowledged and farewelled our Year 12 cadets at the Cadet Chapel and Passing-Out Parade event held on 22 June.

PIPES AND DRUMS The annual Pipes and Drums Dinner was held on 13 June in the Seniors’ Hall – a fitting farewell to the Year 12 members.

KNOX RAVENSWOOD STUDENT-LED WELLBEING CONFERENCE Knox welcomed over 350 students from around Australia for this annual event. This year’s theme was ‘Empathy: Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges’, with students focusing on connection, perspective and positive psychology.

RECONCILIATION ROUND Josh Sly, a Biripi, Worimi and Wiradjuri man and lead Songman of Wambuul Dancers, led a smoking ceremony as part of Reconciliation Round Week. Our 1sts teams across AFL, Football, Rugby, Tennis and Volleyball were also presented with their special jerseys.

Summer Sport Success Congratulations to our summer champions for 2025-26! Across the competitions, Knox finished top of the CAS table in Diving, Cricket, Golf, Mountain Biking, Swimming, Tennis, Table Tennis, Volleyball and Chess.

KNOX AT HOME It was a lovely evening to connect with one another and renew friendships as we welcomed families at the start of the year. Thank you to our Pipes and Drums for entertaining everyone on Knox 1.

The Thyne Challenge Shield once again called Knox home with our swimmers winning the 95th CAS Swimming and Diving Championships for the 10th year in-a-row.

Matilda The Musical JR. Years 3-6 Wahroonga Prep students presented this high-energy story of a special little girl with an extraordinary imagination in June in the Wenkart Theatre.

Our Chess boys secured their CAS Championship for the ninth consecutive year.

Commonwealth Games

Anzac Services

Some extraordinary swimmers are heading to Glasgow at the end of July to contest the Commonwealth Games! Liam Togher (Y11) qualified for the Australian Dolphins Paralympic Team while Carter Makira (Y10) will be representing the Cook Islands.

Across our Knox Academy of Performing Arts, Pipes and Drums, and Knox Ravenswood Army Cadet Unit, students represented the School respectfully at internal and external Anzac events. Lest We Forget.

SWIMMING Brendan Makira (Y8), alongside his brother Carter (Y10), also competed at the Oceania Swimming Championships in Fiji.

Lukas Dunn (Y11) and Tristan Waugh (OKG25) have qualified for the Australian team to contest the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Canada in August.

Euan Liney (OKG22) has qualified for the Australian Dolphins Open Water Team that will compete in California on 10 August.

WAHROONGA PREP CENTENARY CHAPEL SERVICE Wahroonga Prep is celebrating 100 years with a milestone service that was held at St John’s Uniting Church. After the worship and musical performances, the community gathered for a morning tea and open classrooms.

A history display was also showcased in the Church Hall.

YEARS 3-4 MUSICAL Ms Ali Irwin, Director and Producer Stanley Marvel (Eddie Young) may be the clumsiest clot in Megaville, but he’s happy to read his comics and dream his life away. That is until it’s turned upside-down when he discovers that local hero, The Candy King (Connor Liu), is a Super-Villain determined to conquer the world with his corrupt confectionery! Stan knows Megaville needs a Superhero. But when his crazy Gran (Christopher Tran) and her crumbly chums reveal an earth-shattering secret, Stan’s shocked to discover his true identity!

With a dose of secret formula and a pair of fantastic elastic anti-gravity underpants, Stanley Marvel takes to the skies as the greatest Superhero the world has ever known. Is it a bird, is it a plane? No, it’s Superstan (Declan Wen)!

LIFE AT KNOX

Our Christian Identity Rev Dr Rosalie Clarke MacLarty, Mrs Jennie Boulden, Mr Warren Fisher, Mr Hunor Kicsi, Mr Wenshuo Li Chaplaincy Team It is a privilege to be able to teach students of Knox and Wahroonga Prep about the saving love of Jesus and the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. The Chaplaincy team and staff spend considerable time and effort to ensure that the Christian faith and spirituality is well integrated across all areas. We continue to work alongside the Uniting Church to ensure our Christian identity and mission is taken into consideration in all initiatives, and that students are given the opportunity to hear and respond to the good news of Christ.

STUDENT CHRISTIAN LEADERS CRU is a ministry-based program that continues to draw strong participation each Monday lunchtime. This term, boys explored a series of stories that focused on Jesus, engaging with his character and teachings in an accessible and discussion-based format.

Portfolio Leadership Training (PLT) members met fortnightly to examine the ‘Book of Philippians’ and its themes of perseverance, joy and servant leadership as a framework for student leaders. Together, CRU and PLT continue to nurture the Christian faith in our students.

Knox Prep Easter Chapel Easter was a joyful occasion for Knox Prep students and families to come together to celebrate.

Rev Rose retold the story of the Easter Holy Week; from Jesus blessing his disciples on Maundy Thursday, the sadness and confusion of Good Friday, to the joy of renewal and reconciliation on that first Easter Sunday.

The service was accompanied with lovely musical performances by the boys.

YEAR 7 SPIRITUAL RETREAT I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Psalm 139:14 Chaplain Mr Wenshuo Li attended Year 7 Camp and facilitated chapel sessions for the boys throughout the week based on this passage.

The event culminated with a spiritual retreat held in the William McIlrath War Memorial Chapel. Across 14 spaces, boys engaged in activities that encouraged prayer and worship, before listening to the gospel read by Faith and Spirituality Head Prefect, Ryan Low (Y12).

EASTER CANATA SERVICE

BUSH CHAPEL Year 9 students enjoyed taking part in Bush Chapel as part of AFX this year, with platoons reflecting on creation and the beauty of God’s handiwork.

Cadet Chaplain Mr Hunor Kicsi spoke about the centrality of Jesus in the Christian faith and his sacrifice. This was followed by a Q and A session, and an opportunity for one-on-one pastoral care or prayer. It was encouraging to see the number of cadets who came forward, and to find out more about the Christian faith that forms such a rich and foundational part of the School’s heritage.

Wahroonga Prep

Knox Prep and Senior School joined on Maundy Thursday to reflect on the Easter story and heard from a full choral Eucharist.

Choristers sang songs by Michael Trotta, José Maurício Nunes Garcia and Felice Anerio. It was a wonderful way to approach the Easter long weekend.

Mother’s Day Chapel The Wahroonga Prep Mother’s Day service was a special time for the community, with mothers and carers enjoying worship with their children. Celebrating the gift of motherhood, Years 1 and 2 sang When God Made You My Mother before presenting thoughtfully crafted gifts.

Learner Agency

MS DANIELLE BRANDON Head of Knox Preparatory School Commencing this year as Head of Knox Prep has afforded me a valuable gift: fresh eyes.

I am also acutely aware that I am standing on the shoulders of giants. Knox Prep is a school shaped by strong leadership defined by deep care and enduring excellence. With that inheritance comes both privilege and responsibility; the responsibility to observe carefully, to listen deeply and to honour what has come before while helping to shape what comes next.

In my first months, I have had the opportunity to meet individually with every Knox Prep staff member. These conversations have been both affirming and inspiring. I have listened as colleagues shared what they love about Knox – the sense of community, the calibre of our boys, the professionalism and generosity of staff. I also heard about the challenges that naturally accompany any dynamic learning environment. What has stood out most clearly is a shared appetite: an overwhelming desire among our staff to further explore what learner agency looks like, not only for our boys, but for themselves as educators.

Traditionally, schools have asked, “How well is the student achieving?”

It is a valid question, but perhaps an incomplete one. What might happen if we instead asked,

“How deeply is the student owning their learning?” This shift reframes success. It invites us to think beyond outcomes alone and towards engagement, ownership and identity.

Learner agency gives us permission to interrogate routines that may unintentionally limit student voice, choice or independence. How often do we plan learning experiences for students rather than with them? And what might shift if we did? With fresh eyes, I have been struck by just how capable our boys are. When we hold high expectations and pair them with genuine opportunities for agency, they respond with creativity, responsibility and pride. They are ready. Not someday, but now.

As we look ahead, the next step in propelling Knox Prep into its next chapter is clear: to cultivate a strong and shared sense of agency in every educator and every boy. This is not a singular initiative, but a cultural commitment.

It requires us, as educators, to see ourselves as learners by modelling curiosity, reflection and growth in our own practice. In doing so, we create the conditions in which our boys can do the same.

This is our shared Knox Prep vision, and it is one I am privileged to co-lead alongside outstanding colleagues. Together, we are asking what it truly means to empower learners in our context, and how we might create classrooms where agency is not the exception, but the norm.

Modelling curiosity, reflection and growth Imagine a future shaped by boys who have experienced this from their earliest days of schooling. Boys who, from as young as five, understand themselves as active participants in their learning. Boys who ask questions, take ownership, show resilience and act with purpose. A Knox education has always been about preparing young people for the future.

By embedding learner agency at the heart of what we do, we are not only preparing our boys to succeed in that future – we are equipping them to shape it.

A Big First Semester

CELEBRATING COMMUNITY Mrs Kristy Kenney, Year 1 Team Leader Through the Knoxigations unit, ‘Celebrations Connect Our Community’, Year 1 boys have investigated the concepts of celebration, community and connection, while reflecting on the special ways people come together across families, cultures and communities. Through rich classroom discussions, shared stories and hands-on learning experiences, students identified different celebrations that are meaningful in their own lives, including birthdays, Christmas and welcoming a new baby into a family. The boys have enjoyed sharing personal experiences and discovering similarities and differences between celebrations across cultures.

STARTING STRONG Ms Angharad Cook, Kindergarten Team Leader Kindergarten boys have made a confident transition into Knox Prep, showing remarkable energy and courage as they adapted to new classroom settings, routines, and expectations. The boys have actively engaged with their peers, forming new friendships both within their class and across the year group. As these relationships have developed, the boys have grown in independence and shown an increasing readiness to participate in learning activities.

The Kindergarten and Year 6 buddy system continues to support the younger boys by helping them feel connected and secure. For Year 6 students, this opportunity allows them to model positive behaviour and leadership.

Kindergarten boys enjoy the guidance and encouragement offered by their older buddies.

Their trust in this support, coupled with their enthusiasm for shared activities, has strengthened their sense of belonging and contributed to their growing social confidence.

As part of their Knoxigations inquiries, Kindergarten explored the big idea that “People work together in communities”.

The boys engaged in a variety of learning experiences that have deepened their 12

understanding of how they contribute to their class community, the Knox community, and the wider world. They also examined the concept of relationships and considered how connections with others shape and support each of these communities. Through discussions and hands-on activities, the boys have come to appreciate the collaborative nature of community life and the many roles that people take on to support one another.

The boys’ first semester has been a busy one, focussed on the importance of cooperation, responsibility, and mutual respect. They are developing an understanding of their own capacity to contribute meaningfully, within the School community and beyond. We look forward to watching the boys continue their learning journey in Semester 2.

Students also explored the meaning of community and reflected on the many communities they belong to, including their families, sporting teams, friendship groups, and our Year 1 cohort. Through collaborative activities, the boys developed an understanding that communities are strengthened when people work together, show kindness and support one another. It was wonderful to see the boys develop confidence in expressing their ideas while learning from the perspectives of their peers.

Following are some student reflections on the traditions and connections that are important to them, displayed through creative LEGO builds:

I chose to build a big feast for Chinese New Year because my family eats special food and celebrates together – Archie Shi.

UNDERSTANDING ECOSYSTEMS Ms Luisa Felizzi, Year 2 Team Leader Outdoor learning and environmental exploration were the focus for Year 2 boys on their excursion to the Narrabeen Coastal Environment Centre.

The boys immersed themselves in the coastal landscape, investigating the unique ecosystems found around the lagoon and along the rocky shoreline.

I chose to build Christmas because I love spending time with my family and opening presents – Thomas Cooke

I chose to build Chinese New Year because my family decorates our house and spends time with each other – Miller Ma

The morning began with an important presentation on aquatic reserves and rock platform safety before students dispersed into supervised groups to explore the rock platforms.

They carefully searched for marine life such as sea stars, sea lettuce and limpets nestled within the tide pools, observing the incredible diversity of animals and algae. Along the way, they learned how these organisms survive in such a dynamic environment – coping with crashing waves, changing tides and predators through clever adaptations like gripping tightly to rocks or camouflaging within their surroundings.

Back at the Centre, students explored a large 3D catchment model to deepen their understanding of how water moves through the environment.

The boys learned where water comes from, where it travels, and how human actions can impact water quality. They discussed practical ways that humans can care for waterways and applied this learning by creating simple water filters by the lagoon, reinforcing the importance of clean water as a basic need and as a vital habitat for living things.

A highlight of the day was time spent exploring the Centre’s touch tables, animal enclosures and marine specimens. Students engaged in hands-on discovery, uncovering fascinating facts, such as how a sea star moves and just how many rows of teeth a tiger shark can have.

The excursion strengthened students’ understanding of ecosystems, the interconnectedness of living and non-living elements, and their shared responsibility to care for the natural world. It was a meaningful and memorable day of curiosity, wonder, and coastal discovery.

A CROSS-CURRICULUM APPROACH

ANZAC DAY CEREMONY Miss Nadine Smith, Year 3 Team Leader

The Knox Prep community gathered in quiet reflection as Year 3 students thoughtfully led this year’s Anzac Day Ceremony. With confidence, respect and maturity beyond their years, the students honoured the service and sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand soldiers, both past and present.

The ceremony opened with Year 3 boys explaining why Anzac Day is a significant date in the Australian calendar. They explained the meaning of the Gallipoli landing on 25 April 1915 and the enduring spirit of courage, mateship and sacrifice. The boys also spoke of the Knox values as a further reflection.

Faith was expressed through prayer and scripture, reminding students to trust in God’s presence and to be ‘soldiers of peace’ who live with love and forgiveness.

Wisdom was evident as students connected past conflicts with lessons for the future, deepened through explanations of some Anzac symbols.

Integrity was shown in the respectful way Anzac traditions were honoured and sacrifices remembered with honesty and dignity.

Year 4 has been busy learning about the journeys of significant explorers, applying both historical and geographical skills to investigate their discoveries, achievements and challenges as part of their Knoxigations unit, ‘Stories of the World and its People’. A transdisciplinary approach has ensured that learning is connected and purposeful across all areas of the curriculum.

Compassion was central throughout, particularly in prayers for soldiers, their families and those affected by war, encouraging kindness and empathy in daily life.

Finally, courage was highlighted through recounts of the Gallipoli landing and the acrostic poem describing fear, danger and bravery.

The visual tribute was particularly powerful.

As the acrostic poem was read aloud, students carried crosses forward and placed them alongside silhouettes and concluded with the laying of a wreath. We commend Year 3 for leading this school-wide ceremony with respect and consideration.

In Art, students stepped into the shoes of botanist Joseph Banks, carefully observing native Australian flora and creating detailed botanical drawings and paintings that capture the distinct beauty of the Australian landscape.

In Drama, they embodied shipwrecked explorers, using this imaginative context to strengthen their oral language and storytelling skills. In Scope IT, students explored how technology could have supported historical exploration, designing and creating tools such as depth finders. These varied experiences allowed the boys to engage with the central idea from multiple perspectives, enriching their overall understanding.

CRU CAMP Miss Sarah Beaumont-Jones, Year 5 Team Leader CRU camp was a special time for the Year 5 boys to deepen their connections with one another and strengthen their sense of belonging within the cohort. Throughout their time at Lake Macquarie, the boys shared experiences that challenged them, stretched them and, most importantly, brought them closer together.

Throughout the unit, students also made excellent use of the Prep’s interactive learning spaces. The Innovation Hub became a place for problem-solving and coding, as students tackled challenges linked to their inquiries. The Inquiry Hub provided a collaborative environment for research, discussion and deeper questioning.

These thoughtfully designed spaces continue to play an important role in supporting a dynamic and engaging learning experience.

Camping in tents meant embracing the full range of the outdoors and was a truly characterbuilding experience. While some classes experienced hot, humid conditions, others had to navigate rain and muddy ground. It was truly an adventure for all, and the boys approached each challenge with resilience, good humour, and a willingness to support one another. For some, it was their first time being away from home for an extended period. We commend the boys who stepped outside their comfort zone to try new activities and those who encouraged a friend who felt unsure.

Throughout the camp, it was wonderful to see the boys looking out for one another. Whether helping to set up tents, cheering each other on during activities, or sharing stories and laughter in the evenings, there was a genuine spirit of care and encouragement.

By the end of camp, it was clear that the experience had brought the boys closer together.

Moments of contemplation and reflection allowed them to further immerse themselves in the School’s Uniting Church faith, feeling supported through challenges, and being a valued member of Year 5.

YEAR 6 MUSICAL ‘SEUSSICAL JR’

Jungle Citizens, who all brought the stage to life with colour, excitement and incredible energy!

One of the most impressive elements of this year’s production was the choreography.

The dance routines were some of the most complex and challenging ever attempted in a Knox Prep musical, requiring enormous dedication, precision and rehearsal. The boys rose to the challenge magnificently, performing with remarkable energy and professionalism throughout every number.

The Year 6 production was a joyful and spectacular celebration of creativity, energy, teamwork and talent, delighting audiences from beginning to end! From the moment the curtain lifted, the cast brought the imaginative world of Dr Seuss to life with enthusiasm and extraordinary stage presence. The production was bursting with personality, humour, heart and an infectious sense of fun. The production was further brought to life through big and ambitious sets, adding an extraordinary level of theatrical magic and colour to every scene.

The audience were transported into the imaginative and colourful world of Seuss through the eyes of Jojo (Leo Gong), whose creativity and wonder set the tone for the entire show. Horton (Hugo Leonard) was portrayed with warmth, kindness and determination, while The Cat in the Hat (Thomas Norrie) captivated audiences with energetic stage presence, comedic timing and flair.

Mayzie (Andrew Wang) was full of confidence, humour and charisma, while Gertrude McFuzz (Ethan Stone) shone with heart, sensitivity and outstanding musicianship. Supporting them was an exceptional ensemble cast including the Bird Girls, Wickersham Brothers, The Whos and

JUNIOR PLAY Mr Brandon Diaz, Director The premise of ‘Trackers’ by Donna Hughes, whilst fiction, is a reality that does not seem far away.

Set in a near-future dystopia where society is divided into zones, all living under the control of an all-powerful algorithm that decides your friends, your tastes, and your life. Gifted coder Sam Turing is flagged as a threat to the System and transferred to C-Zone High School – a place of eerie students, dangerous teachers, and something sinister picking off pupils one by one.

Our Junior Play was a technological thriller that explored algorithms that took on a life of their own, controlling everything from diet and hobbies to friend selection and behaviour. The play shared one of the potential pathways our society could lean towards and examined why the argument for more digital involvement is not necessarily the best choice for future generations.

Congratulations to the students from Knox, Abbotsleigh, Loreto Normanhurst, Pymble Ladies’ College, and Ravenswood School for Girls. Theatre doesn’t happen without a community, and every contribution from the cast, crew and staff was vital and appreciated.

Annual Field Exercise

If you ask a cadet about their experience in the Unit, the Annual Field Exercise (AFX) is undoubtedly the first thing that comes to mind.

It is the most exciting event on the calendar for the Knox Ravenswood Army Cadet Unit (KRACU), and AFX26 certainly lived up to its reputation.

This year’s AFX involved over 1,000 students and 100 staff, with cadets operating in more than eight locations at any one time across 38 million square metres of terrain. The KRACU runs on a scale that is difficult to appreciate until you are responsible, even in part, for holding it together. Seeing my peers push, succeed and excel beyond themselves in the unknown makes that responsibility feel like a privilege. It was particularly special to see the younger leaders thrive. For many of them, this was their first real opportunity to step up and direct with authority and accountability. Indeed, the most challenging of environments brought out the best in our cadets.

During AFX, I worked as a Duty Officer in the Command Post (CP), overseeing a rotating group of seven cadets. In the CP, cadets work together as a team to receive radio transmissions from companies in the field, serving as their primary point of contact. It is always a busy place, as cadets coordinate anything from medical assistance to BBQ deliveries.

As part of the pool of cadets who are rostered for CP shifts, cadets from Admin Platoon operate specialised software to manage the substantial

load of information received. It was a delight to oversee their training and watch them showcase their newfound expertise.

This is my fourth year in the KRACU. My first recollection of the Unit, back in 2022, was racing to compare my recruit posting with my friends. Since enjoying my recruit year in Charlie Company, I have served as a Corporal in Admin Platoon, a Warrant Officer as the Chief Clerk, and the incumbent Regimental Administration Officer. I am incredibly thankful for the many leaders who have helped me build the mindset I hold today. Likewise, it has been a rare privilege to work amongst my peers – under the SUO together with the RHQ team, Company and Platoon Commanders, as well as all Year 12 leaders who serve in other appointments.

For the Year 12 cohort, our last AFX takes its place among a succession of farewells that marks the end of our cadet journey. I think all of us can say, after a total of almost 30 days in Lithgow across four years, we are not quite the same people; the Unit has asked more of us than we expected, and we are better for having answered. But just as how the watch of the Command Post must be handed over eventually, so too must the reins be entrusted onward. We leave it in good hands, and we leave it grateful.

Celebrating 100 years OF WAHROONGA PREPARATORY SCHOOL

In December 2025, and on the eve of Wahroonga Prep celebrating 100 years, students took to the stage to perform ‘A Centenary in a Day’.

The two performances shared the history of education in Australia – all the way back to 1926.

1939 During World War II, extra teachers were appointed as the School’s enrolment numbers increased to 105 students. Music lessons also commenced under Director, Mrs N Clough.

1961 New classrooms were built to accommodate 120 students from 3-7 years old.

1977

1983

Wahroonga Prep celebrated its 50th Anniversary as an established independent school. A special church service was held at St John’s followed by an Open Week.

Celebrations culminated in a Parents’ Association Golden Jubilee Dinner.

Wahroonga Prep was appointed a Demonstration School for Sydney University’s Bachelor of Education Early Childhood program.

2012 The School Council unveiled a new school crest with the motto ‘Knowledge, Wisdom, Compassion’.

2016 2015 Wahroonga Prep became a campus of Knox Grammar School.

The community celebrated the School’s 90th birthday with a service at St John’s, a morning tea and concert. A new school song by Mr A Chessher was commissioned, which is sung every week at Assembly.

A new school blessing was also established.

1927

1926 Three parishioners, Mrs F H Booth, Mrs W H Read and Mrs S Thomson, approached Reverend C E James of St John’s Presbyterian Church with a vision to establish a Kindergarten in the newly built church halls. At the time, there was no Kindergarten in Wahroonga.

Wahroonga Prep opened with 11 pupils, growing to 19 students by the end of the year. Classes were held in the two church halls with Miss E Whyte as the first Director.

The School Council comprised of Rev James, Mr S J Carruthers, Mrs R Cuthbert, Mrs and Mrs C Smith, and Mr A Cowan. They were later joined by Mr H J Brigden.

1986 The Squash Court was converted into an Activities Room to provide space for Music, Cooking, Drama, Maths and Physical Education classes.

A new playground was also built between the Manse and the School Building.

2004 Wahroonga Prep transitioned to a Pre-Kindergarten to Year 6 school.

SENIOR MUSICAL Ms Tanya Mitford, Director of Co-Curricular Theatre K-12 What began as a bold idea – to stage Monty Python’s ‘Spamalot’ – quickly revealed itself as something far greater: finding our very own Grail. For our remarkable young artists, choosing to take part in this production (and delightfully chaotic, tap-dancing, moat-building, boundary-pushing quest!) was their first act of courage. They stretched themselves in ways their medieval counterparts could scarcely imagine – mastering new skills, embracing the Monty Python mayhem, and discovering just how much they can achieve when they see something through and commit fully to their goals.

When creating our ‘Black and Blue’ scene, we realised there is much to celebrate about life at Knox. Within our musical theatre family here, we are proud of our space where respect is evident, individuality is championed, and each person is encouraged to boldly pursue what brings them joy. This show is a shining beacon of that spirit in action.

And did we find our Grail? In many ways, yes. It lives in the lifelong friendships formed, the risks taken, the growth achieved, and the joy shared. It exists in every note sung, every step danced, and every moment of connection in the Wenkart Theatre. Congratulations to the cast, crew and orchestra.

It has been an exciting period in the TAS department with boys continuing to produce inspired Bodies of Work across the subjects and year groups. In the 2025 HSC course, Design and Technology, Brodie Shearer (OKG25) was placed on the NSW Education Standards Authority’s First in Course list for achieving first place in a HSC course.

The TAS department in the Senior School offers a dynamic curriculum that reflects the pace of change in technology, industry practice and student interests. The process of updating subjects is guided by three key considerations – relevance, engagement and future pathways.

Subject offerings are reviewed to ensure alignment with syllabus requirements set by the NSW Education Standards Authority.

This includes evaluating student uptake data, feedback, and patterns of progression into senior courses to ensure a coherent and viable subject pathway structure.

Access to high-quality facilities is a key priority for subjects such as Industrial Technology, Engineering, and Design and Technology. The selection of equipment is guided by a structured and evidence-informed process centred on curriculum alignment, safety, durability, and industry relevance.

Real-world trends play a critical role in shaping curriculum decisions. Insights from sectors such as digital technologies, engineering, and design ensure that students are developing skills that remain current and transferable. For example, the increasing relevance of areas such

as automation, coding, and digital fabrication influence updates to Computing, Multimedia, and Engineering courses. This ensures students are not only learning foundational concepts but also engaging with contemporary tools and processes. Additionally, consultation with local industry partners, tertiary institutions, and professional networks helps validate that course content reflects authentic applications.

Student voice is also considered. Elective choices, engagement levels, and informal feedback help guide adjustments to ensure courses remain appealing and meaningful.

Q&A WITH MR CASSIDY What is the difference between helping design projects with Years 7 and 8 compared to assisting Years 11 and 12 students with their Major Works?

I enjoy helping Years 7 and 8 boys with the practical processes like how to use a drill, or how to weld materials together. In Years 11 and 12, students have a better understanding of the equipment and design process, so it more about offering my opinion and guiding the boys to assist them with their projects.

Do you have a practical lesson or Major Work highlight that stands out to you?

TAS subjects are uniquely positioned to develop a broad set of transferable skills that extend well beyond the classroom, preparing students for an evolving future.

– Mr Bailey, Head of TAS TAS subjects offer opportunities for students to develop computational thinking, where they learn to break down complex problems, identify patterns, and design logical, step-by-step solutions. These skills transfer across disciplines. Systems thinking is also emphasised, as students analyse how components interact within a whole, consider dependencies, and anticipate the impact of change. Finally, design thinking encourages empathy, creativity, iteration, and user-centred problem-solving, requiring students to test, refine, and improve solutions in response to feedback. These approaches collectively build students’ capacity to approach unfamiliar challenges with confidence.

Three projects come to mind – a boat that was all copper riveted; a go kart complete with the frame, pedals, linkages, steering arm, and the columns; and a safe which turned out to be a job where I learnt new manufacturing techniques.

How do you balance traditional craftmanship with emerging digital technologies?

I would call myself a traditionalist, in that I like to fabricate, cut and weld, drill and hone. I take pride in the work that I help to create. It has been interesting to see new technology coming through but even when you download a new program on how to make something, for example, you still need to know how to read a drawing, measure, and use tools to build. It is fantastic to be part of the boys’ journeys as they become craftsmen and create impressive pieces.

Spotlight ON SPORT KNOX BASKETBALL PROGRAM Mr Harry Fotopoulos, Director of Sport Miss Susan Watt, Knox Prep Head of Sport Basketball has been a part of the Combined Association Schools competition since 1970, and we are fast approaching the 60th year of this sport being offered at Knox.

The Basketball program is a popular choice amongst students, with the largest number of participants of any sport across Senior School and Knox Prep. This year, over 650 Senior students and over 300 Prep boys took part in the program. Knox Basketball has widely become one of the largest single-sex basketball programs in Australia.

The Knox Prep Basketball program continues to go from strength to strength. Through fun drills and modified games, our coaches are helping students develop their fundamental skills and build confidence on the court. The hard work is

paying off, with many teams enjoying strong results and success throughout the first half of the season.

Year 6 students, Caeden Cai and Tim Li, were selected to represent IPSHA at the CIS Basketball Championships.

Congratulations to both boys! They played brilliantly and represented the Knox values with distinction throughout the tournament.

The goal of the program is to engage students through progressive training and developing skills in the game.

Basketball is an inclusive sport, encouraging students to strive for personal excellence and build valuable life skills. Boys are taught to think and adapt during games, challenging them to play as a team and work together as they find solutions in a competitive setting.

Since 1970, the Knox Basketball program have won 11 CAS titles (1978, 1979, 1980, 1997, 2009, 2014, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023). There is a proud and rich history with

Knox Fencing first began its program across Knox Prep and Senior School in 2012 with three full classes. The focus was to develop a range of both fundamental movement and motor skills necessary for a beginner fencer (2012 Grammarian).

Fast track to 2026, and our program continues to engage students in this unique sport. Blending physicality with mental discipline, this modern Olympic sport is fast-paced and strategic. Two competitors use swords to score points, with the aim to contact specific target areas on their opponent, all while following precise rules of movement and priority. The Knox Fencing program is designed to cater for beginners through to advanced fencers, fostering not only technical ability but also sportsmanship, focus, and resilience.

A key strength of the Fencing program is its exposure to the three distinct disciplines: Foil, Épée, and Sabre. Boys relish the opportunity to specialise in a specific weapon and there are multiple competition pathways within our program.

Knox fencers have enjoyed tremendous success. In the AJ Rae Teams tournament, students won Gold in the Intermediate Foil and Bronze in the Intermediate Épée.

Those outstanding results saw both teams qualify for the Australian Fencing Schools Championship. The boys went on to win the Gold (Épée) and Silver (Foil) in the team events. Simultaneously, Ruize Xu (Y10) claimed an individual bronze medal in the Intermediate Épée competition.

In the winter season, boys compete in the Sydney Schools League competition across multiple disciplines. Last year, Knox hosted one of the events for the first time in nearly a decade and we are proud to have on our team, multiple students who are currently ranked in the top 10 in Australia in their respective disciplines for their age group.

We are excited about the future direction of our skilled fencers, led by Head Coach Mr Angelo Santangelo, who has been with the program since it’s inception at Knox. We also congratulate him for being recently honoured as a Fencing Australia Life member.

Beyond the school program, nine Old Boys took their talent over to the NCAA American college system to play basketball and represented Knox overseas.

Harrison Fotopoulos (OKG06), Samuel Rowley (OKG09), Stuart McCewen (OKG10), Michael Rowley (OKG12), Suhkman Bhinder (OKG14), Lachlan McKimm (OKG17), Joshua Pain (OKG20), and Keanu Goehring (OKG21) are proud alumni with Will Mortimore (OKG23) currently in his junior year at Charlestown University. Locally, 1st V Head Coach Mr Jacob Jackomas is the current coach for the Sydney University’s Men’s team and has seen many Old Boys also enjoy success in the University Basketball League Australia.

Congratulations to all teams for their commitment during the summer season. The 1st V and 2nd V finished 3rd in the CAS Championship. We look forward to another exciting season representing the Black and Blue.

STAGE 4

Term 1 was filled with meaningful moments that helped build connections and a sense of belonging. We began by warmly welcoming new boarders and their families at the New Boarder Welcome and Parent Dinner, followed by the Whole of Boarding Welcome Function, which set the tone for a year grounded in community. Our New Boarder Cultural Induction Outing, exploring The Rocks and surfing at Manly was a highlight, as was the Whole of Boarding Outing to Palm Beach and our first Whole of Boarding Meeting. Cultural celebration and learning featured prominently with the Lunar New Year Banquet, calligraphy lesson and panel discussion. Students also enjoyed active and social opportunities such as the Boarder Brother Trophy Touch Football event, Stage 4 Ravenswood Gathering, Thornleigh mini golf and driving range outing, Year 8 Invite a Day Boy Evening, and the Stage 4 Wahroonga Tigers Try and Train afternoon.

Connection and care sat at the heart of many initiatives. Weekly Mob Meet ups created a safe space for First Nations students to connect and engage in cultural activities. The Years 7/10 Mentor Program

Mr Peter Shannon, Head of Stage 5 Boarding Semester 1 has been an energetic and rewarding period in Stage 5, with both our Years 9 and 10 boys embracing the opportunities and challenges with enthusiasm, resilience, and growing maturity. Across the semester, there has been a strong sense of community, supported by positive routines, increasing academic focus, and a willingness amongst the boys to involve themselves fully in the life of the School.

Mr John Oakes, Head of Stage 4 Boarding Year 7 have settled into boarding life with enthusiasm, curiosity and resilience, embracing routines and opportunities with confidence. Year 8 have continued their steady growth, demonstrating increasing leadership, independence and care for others. They have set a positive example for our younger boarders. It has certainly been a strong start to our first semester for our Stage 4 boarders!

and the Years 8/11 Mentor Program, with its focus on Social Justice through the Mending Café and Letters Against Isolation, strengthened relationships across year groups. Year 7 Ag Club also provided a valuable outlet for hands-on learning and responsibility.

Term 2 continued this momentum with an Anzac Day Rugby League match (Dragons vs Roosters), long weekend inflatable fun, Stage 4 Toolbox Ed workshop on navigating conflict, and the Year 7 Sleep Hygiene Workshop. Social connections were reinforced through the Pymble Ladies’ College Junior Social, National Boarding Week and the Big Boarder Bash.

Knox Gala Day once again showcased the strength of our Boarding community, with the Boarders’ stall a wonderful example of parent collaboration, while Back to Country Day was a powerful celebration of our diverse backgrounds and all boarders calling Knox ‘home’.

I am incredibly proud of Stage 4 – they have engaged with all facets of boarding life, and I look forward to seeing them continue to grow and thrive in Semester 2.

The year began with the welcoming of 18 new boarders and their families into Stage 5.

It was particularly pleasing to see returning boys quickly support and include the new students, helping establish a culture of friendship, encouragement, and belonging. Early highlights included our Cultural Induction Experience, where boys explored Sydney through visits to the Harbour Bridge, The Rocks, and Manly Beach, finishing with a surf lesson that quickly became a favourite memory for many.

The boys took part in a wide range of social, sporting, and community experiences. Friday Night Lights, outings to Palm Beach and Manly, mini golf evenings, and the Treetops Adventure excursion all provided valuable opportunities for boys to relax, connect and enjoy time together.

Term 2 commenced with strong momentum.

The boys’ behaviour and positive engagement were recognised at the Ravenswood School for Girls and Pymble Ladies’ College socials. They took an active role in National Boarding Week celebrations, leading assembly presentations centred around the theme, Echoes of Home.

Their reflections on friendship, belonging, and the shared boarding experience highlighted the maturity and pride developing within the cohort.

Anzac Day was another significant occasion and the boys participated respectfully in commemorative events. Some also attended the traditional Anzac Day Rugby League fixture which proved particularly meaningful for several of our international boarders experiencing the occasion for the first time.

Gala Day and Back to Country once again celebrated everything that makes boarding at Knox so special – friendship, family, tradition, and community spirit. Gala Day provided time for our boys to connect with the wider community while Back to Country created a relaxed and joyful atmosphere as boarding families gathered to share food, stories, and time together.

The boys are commended for the way they have approached the semester with positivity and humour. We thank families for their ongoing support and partnership and look forward to an equally exciting second half of the year.

Semester 1 has been a strong and purposeful start for our Years 11 and 12 boarders. The boys have enjoyed the opportunities and responsibilities as senior boarders, returning to Knox with maturity and intent. Our new Year 11 boarders have settled seamlessly into the community, supported by the strength of relationships across Stage 6.

A key focus of the semester was building habits that support success in the Senior School. Through House Meetings, academic mentoring and structured preparation, boys have been encouraged to take ownership of their learning. Experiences such as the Year 11 Total Fitness Camp provided an opportunity to reflect on personal goals and develop strategies for balancing academic and co-curricular demands, while the Year 12 Examination Block challenged students to demonstrate discipline and resilience.

Equally important have been the shared experiences that have further strengthened connections across the community. Whether it was the Palm Beach outing, Climb Fit, Rugby League fixtures or the energy of the inflatables in the Great Hall, the boys have enjoyed taking part in a range of activities together. Hosting our Knox Old Boy guests for dinner has also been a highlight, offering valuable perspective as boys learn from those who have gone before them.

Community spirit was high at Gala Day and Back to Country and provided meaningful moments to connect. Events such as these remain key highlights in our calendar, as they showcase the strength and diversity of our boarding families.

This sense of connection continued through National Boarding Week, culminating in the Big Boarder Bash – an evening of games and a movie on the Terrace that brought everyone together in a relaxed setting. Co-educational opportunities, including evenings with Abbotsleigh and a friendly netball fixture with Pymble Ladies’ College, have further strengthened connections beyond Knox.

I am grateful for the ongoing support of the Assistant Heads of Stage – Mr Bate, Mr Cross, Mr Green, Mr McCrea, Mr McWhinney, Mr Starr, and Mr Zagami, together with our wonderful House Managers – Ms Andronicus, Ms Lee, Mrs McGhie, Ms Hanna and Mrs Quigley.

Social Justice MISS EMMA COLLINGE Service Learning Coordinator

The Social Justice Program continues to encourage students to advocate awareness and action through courageous and compassionate service. The Social Justice club provides opportunities for Years 7-12 boys to strengthen existing connections and develop friendships. Everyone is welcome to join the club who meet at lunchtime on Fridays during term time.

THE SONY FOUNDATION CHILDREN’S SCHOOL HOLIDAY CAMP (ABBOX) The ABBOX of Fun School Holiday Camp, held in December 2025, provided three days of fun and activities for children with disabilities. Thank you to the Year 11 student volunteers from Knox and Abbotsleigh for giving these families time to recharge through respite care.

International Women’s Day HORNSBY KU-RING-GAI DOMESTIC AND FAMILY VIOLENCE WALK As part of the United Nation’s 16 Days of Activism campaign, boys took part in this event to help raise awareness against gender-based violence.

RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS COMMITTEE

Annual Appeals Thank you to the Knox community for their support in last year’s annual Christmas Appeals. Social Justice students packed hampers of food for the Wesley Mission and boxes of toys for the refugee children from the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors. This year, the Easter Appeal comprised donations of 280 noodle cups, 585 Easter eggs and 33 packets of mini Easter eggs for the Wesley Mission.

As part of the Respectful Relationships Committee, Social Justice students visited Hornsby Courthouse and the local Police Station.

The boys met with the Court Registrar and observed court proceedings as well as engaged with police officers and representatives from a women’s domestic violence advocacy service.

GALA DAY Thank you to the boys who led our two initiatives at Gala Day. The Social Justice stall sold Krispy Kreme doughnuts to raise money for this year’s ABBOX Camp while Knox Cards for a Cause, a new student-led initiative, were sold in support of the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation.

Knox Environment and Sustainability Team (KEST)

CO-CURRICULAR EXPO Social Justice Prefects and students volunteered their time to promote the Social Justice Club to Year 7 students at the Co-Curricular Expo, resulting in many new and enthusiastic members.

KEST Committee members swept up all the hair clippings from our hugely successful World’s Greatest Shave event to send to Sustainable Salons; a company dedicated to making hair booms that help clean up oil spills and protect waterways.

WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE Thank you to our generous community for supporting students and staff as we fundraised for the Leukaemia Foundation in March.

We raised $151,622 – an incredible amount to go towards blood cancer research projects and assistance for affected patients and their families.

Established in 1978, Knox Gala Day is the largest community event on the Knox Grammar School calendar. All funds raised are used to purchase new equipment and resources to benefit the students of Knox.

The extraordinary contribution of the late Edric Chaffer (OKG50) and Tony Osman (OKG57) to the School and OKGA Heritage was honoured in a special ceremony on 27 February, as the archival museum within the Knox Heritage Centre was officially named the Chaffer Osman Museum. We were delighted to host Tony and his extended family, along with Edric’s nephew and grandniece, in the Bryden Room to celebrate the occasion.

The Chaffer Osman Museum is a valuable and visually compelling reminder of the students, staff and Old Boys who have shaped Knox Grammar School, and we thank all Old Boys who have contributed to the preservation of the School’s legacy for the benefit of current students and future generations.

Still on the theme of heritage, 25 Old Boys shared memories of their school days, with a focus on their House, at the Year 8 House Heritage Day. On behalf of the OKGA, I would also like to thank the Class of 2025 for their farewell gift to the School, a mural of Andrew Campbell (OKG97), painted in the tunnel leading to Knox 1 alongside the plaque bearing his name. Eleven members of the 1st XV from 1997 reunited with Andrew’s family and friends to remember Andrew, before viewing the mural on Saturday 2 May. The Andrew Campbell Cup was a meaningful day, demonstrating the lifelong bonds formed at Knox and the Old Boys’ commitment to supporting one another across generations.

Students in Years 10-12 also benefitted from Old Boys willingness to support the School, with 55 returning to Knox in March to speak at the Knox OKGA Career Insights Evening. Feedback we received from parents and students was overwhelmingly positive. Conversations held at these events provide invaluable encouragement and perspective for students as they consider their future, while the diversity of experiences presented highlights the strength of our network.

Senior boarders also had the opportunity to hear from former boarder Bryn Robertson (OKG95) at an informal Q and A and dinner in the Boarders’ Dining Room in April.

Community connection across generations was further strengthened through a lunch held for Old Boy fathers and grandfathers of current students. This informal function in the foyer of the Great Hall provided a wonderful opportunity for the sons and grandsons of Old Boys to appreciate the importance of an ongoing connection to the School, and we thank the School for its support in acknowledging the strong ties Old Boys maintain with the School long after their graduation. In addition, continuing an important tradition, I also had the opportunity to meet sons and grandsons of Old Boys at Knox Prep, as they gathered for the annual descendants’ photo.

More than 200 members of the Knox Community, ranging in age from 18-85, attended this year’s Annual Thistle Lunch at Doltone House, Hyde Park.

Our guest speaker, Ben Alexander (OKG02) reflected on his journey from professional sport as a member of the Wallabies, to co-founding the community movement, Running for Resilience.

We were pleased to host the Class of 2025 at an informal BBQ in February, providing the space for our newest alumni to reconnect with the members of the School Executive and Senior Academy, as we celebrated their excellent HSC results.

None of these events would be possible without the dedication of our committee members, including the newest member of the OKGA Committee, Lachie Orth (OKG21), who was appointed at this year’s Annual General Meeting.

Lachie filled the position vacated by Ed Colyer (OKG13) who stepped down after five years of service. The generosity and enthusiasm of our Committee members continues to ensure the OKGA remains active, welcoming and relevant to Old Boys of all ages.

Finally, in collaboration with the School, we remembered the Old Boys who made the ultimate sacrifice at the Anzac Memorial Service for the Old Knox Grammarians’ Association and the Ceremonial Parade of the Knox Ravenswood Army Cadet Unit held on Sunday 17 May.

We look ahead to the remainder of 2026 with great optimism and appreciation for all members of the Knox community who contribute to the spirit of our Association. Please save the date for OKGA Sports Day: Saturday 19 September. OKGA teams will contest the School’s top teams across several sports, including Basketball, Tennis, Touch Football and more.

Andrew Campbell Cup

More than 100 members of the Knox community gathered for lunch on 2 May to remember Andrew ‘Big Dog’ Campbell (OKG97) who died in the St Patrick’s vs Knox 1st XV game on 19 July 1997.

A mural featuring Andrew was unveiled to Andrew’s family and friends in a special ceremony before this year’s Knox vs St Patrick’s Andrew Campbell Cup match. Painted in the tunnel to Knox 1 alongside the plaque bearing Andrew’s name, the mural was received as a gift to the School from the Class of 2025.

We were pleased to welcome Andrew’s parents and brothers, 11 members of the 1st XV from 1997, Old Boys from the Classes of 1994-1999 and their families back to Knox for this poignant occasion.

Thank you to Chuck Ardron, James Barrett (OKG97) and Andrew’s mother, Linda for sharing their memories of Andrew, and former School Captain, Arjun Vishnu (OKG25), for speaking on behalf of the Class of 2025 about their gift of the mural to the School in honour of Andrew’s legacy.

The mural was inspired by a photo of Big Dog playing in the Knox vs St Joseph’s match on 24 May 1997, taken by Peter Burns. First published on the cover of The Thistle (July 1997), the image has been recreated by mural artist Hugues Sineux.

Thistle Lunch More than 200 Old Boys attended the Annual OKGA Thistle Lunch at Doltone House, Hyde Park, on Friday 15 May. The event featured Ben Alexander (OKG02) who shared his experiences post-retirement from professional rugby. Murray Shaw (OKG89) conducted an honest and moving interview with Ben. Clubs

KNOX WATER POLO CLUB JASON PARK (OKG18) President When we first pitched the idea of starting this Club, we envisioned a community built on great sport and even greater connections. Today, looking back at our inaugural season, it’s safe to say we have truly made a splash.

We had 44 members competing in the Metro Summer Competition across four teams – two Men’s and two Women’s; a structure the Club has successfully carried into the Metro Winter Competition, which started in late May. Riding high on our 1st place finish at the Beach Water Polo 4’s Tournament at Manly Cove, the Seals made a debut at the Byron Bay Fast Fives in April and narrowly missed out on the Grand Final.

While the result didn’t go our way, it was an enjoyable season the Club is immensely proud of. Congratulations to Old Aloys who remain the benchmark of the competition.

There were standout contributions throughout.

Karthik Surendra (OKG19) led the batting with 279 runs at 46.5, well supported by Uddy Biyanwila (OKG14) (196 at 32.67) and Johnny Fourie (OKG22) (176 at 58.67). With the ball, Dan Hardyman was outstanding, taking 22 wickets at 12.32 to lead the competition for wickets, while Cam Wilson (OKG21) had incredible returns (16 wickets at 12.06), as did Luke Hedley (OKG22) (10 wickets at 18.3).

Dan Hardyman’s influence was recognised with both the Best and Fairest (Kelynack Cross Shield) and Players’ Player (Bangs Family) awards. We can’t wait for the 2026-27 season.

Beyond the pool, the Seals community continued to flourish – from the Christmas Party last year, through to End of Season Party in April, and the OKGA Thistle Lunch in May.

The 2026 season has brought with it some exciting new initiatives for Knox United FC. Most notably, our Club has expanded to new heights, introducing an Over 45s squad for the first time. It is great to see our Club support Old Boys of all ages, with more than 300 players registered yet again.

OLD KNOXONIANS’ CRICKET CLUB OSCAR ALCOCK (OKG14) Vice Captain and Secretary Season 2025-26 marked a new chapter for the Club, with Dan Hardyman (OKG20) stepping into the captaincy and leading from the front to guide the Club back to a long-awaited grand final appearance – our first since 2023.

In our Juniors, we now have players from Knox Prep and Wahroonga Prep, as youth participation continues to be a focus for our Club. More than 12 players from the Class of 2025 joined our all-age competitions, with more than half in the Premier League squad. This squad has stayed in the topflight for the 11th consecutive year,

something only five other clubs out of 52 have done in the Northern Suburbs Football Association’s history.

KNOX RUGBY CLUB OSCAR ALCOCK (OKG14) Acting President The Club’s 2026 season started in a flying fashion. With four wins from the first five matches, 1st Grade had the best start to the year since the heyday seasons of the early 2000s.

2nd Grade and Colts were also sitting firmly in the top four after the early rounds.

We have not had as many young players coming through our Colts and Grade squads for a very long time – a testament to the tireless recruitment efforts of Jon Bonwick (OKG93), Colts’ Head Coach, and Harry Chapman (OKG15), Grade Head Coach.

The vibe has also been positive, and we encourage anyone wanting to get involved to come to training on Wednesday nights at Lofberg Oval (6.45pm start). We look forward to Old Boys Day on 18 July, with the Club to play competition fixtures on Knox 1 against Lane Cove Old Ignatians and the annual match against our much-heralded Brothers IV Brothers team (11.40am kick off).

President The Knox Basketball Club enjoyed a fantastic season in Autumn 2026 with a record six teams competing at Norths Basketball, the most teams in the Club’s history and the debut of our new game-day uniforms.

At the time of writing with only a few rounds remaining in the regular season, five of our six teams are currently in finals contention.

In March, the Club hosted its inaugural OKGA In-Season Tournament. Featuring around 25

Band Member April was an exceptionally active month, with numerous engagements filling the Band’s schedule, and participation in significant events reflecting our commitment to tradition and community service.

A major event on the calendar was the Brigadoon Highland Gathering in Bundanoon, as 14 members performed in an event also fostering connection with the School’s Pipes and Drums, demonstrating the intergenerational support within the Knox community.

The Band performed at the Redfern RSL Anzac Commemorative Service and joined forces with the Northern Suburbs Pipe Band at the Rose Bay RSL Anzac Service.

On Anzac Day, Band members were present at many locations across NSW, including Sydney’s CBD, Wahroonga, Turramurra, Pittwater, Narrabeen, Wollombi, Kirribilli, Gulgong, and Junee.

New members who are keen to play pipes and drums in a friendly, informal setting are always welcome. Rehearsals are held at the School on Sundays from 5pm during term time.

Obituaries

PETER JOHN CAMERON (OKG48) 1931 – 2026

Peter commenced at Knox in 1944, joining his brother, Ewen Charles Cameron (OKG46). At Knox he found his passion in the Cadet Corps and the brass band.

Ray, an inspirational leader and a terrific sportsman, was a leading light in the Class of 1965. He was a boarder in MacNeil House, a prefect and a member of the 1st XV and 1st XI teams. He received the Robert Aspinall Memorial Prize for Rugby and was selected in the CAS 1st XV.

Bruce’s connection with Knox followed early years attending Tudor House and Port Kembla Public School. He graduated from Knox in 1944, during the final years of World War II, and immediately enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force.

After school, he first joined a stockbroking firm, before choosing to work in accountancy. At Hungerford Spooner he met Margaret, whom he married in 1959, and they were together for over 66 years, up until his death. His career evolved to partnership in the firm of Bentley & Co. Continuing his interest in the military, in 1950 he enlisted in the Citizen Military Forces (CMF) and joined the 30th Battalion, NSW Scottish Regiment. Over 10 years, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant and assistant Adjutant.

He loved sailing and together with Malcolm Halliday (OKG48), Peter competed on the yacht Carol J in two Sydney to Hobart races.

Peter served the OKGA as Honorary Auditor for 21 years (1967-1987), and he was active in The Senior Knoxonians.

Peter is succeeded by his wife, Margaret; his children Angus (OKG79), Alec (OKG80), and Heather; his grandchildren Laura, Molly, Hugh (OKG12) and Emma; and his greatgrandchildren, Margot and Hamish.

Peter’s funeral, presided over by Jim Mein AM (OKG60), was held in Orange on 17 February.

– ALEC CAMERON (OKG80)

After school, Ray chose a life on the land on the 4,000ha family mixed-farming enterprise, ‘Rutherglen’, west of Nyngan. Rutherglen was sold after 85 years and four generations of family ownership, and Ray and his wife Di moved to Dubbo.

The quintessential community man, Ray stood for election to Bogan Shire Council after the devastating Nyngan floods. He served for 30 years as a Councillor, including 25 years as mayor, making him one of the longest serving mayors in NSW. In recognition of his exceptional contribution to local government, Ray received an Order of Australia award in the 2015 Queens’ Birthday Honours list and the Local Government NSW Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.

As President of The Shire’s Association of NSW, Ray helped steer the merger with the city-focused Local Government Association, becoming joint president of the combined entity, Local Government NSW. Ray’s funeral was held in Nyngan on 17 March.

– DAVID SOMERVAILLE (OKG65)

With aircrew training paused, Bruce was selected for intensive Japanese language studies at Point Cook, Victoria. Within eight months he had become fluent enough to serve in post-war Japan, where he interviewed senior Japanese prisoners as part of Australia’s intelligence effort. By an extraordinary coincidence, one of those he interviewed was Ito Susumu, the pilot whose wartime flight over Sydney had sent Knox students, including Bruce, sheltering beneath their desks. The two later reunited and became lifelong friends.

After returning to Australia, Bruce studied at the University of Sydney, met his future wife Juliet, and began a long career with ICI (now Orica).

Through hard work and leadership, he rose from office boy to senior executive, later leading operations in Tasmania and serving as Chairman of Pilkington Glass.

Beyond business, Bruce devoted himself to public service. He helped establish the Centre for Independent Studies, campaigned tirelessly for electoral reform and was awarded the OAM for his efforts supporting research into Meniere’s disease.

Throughout his life, Bruce remained grateful for his Knox education. He is survived by Juliet and two sons.
