It is only when he reunites with Father Václav decades later that he uncovers the shocking events that led the priest to the murder, and the circumstances that reason cannot comprehend. And as he faces the demons of his own past, he learns that Václav may not be a villain after all, but a hero.

The Last Summer

Title Author

Dorota Ambrožová

„The Last Summer should be talked about. There hasn‘t been such a precise, yet unpretentious debut in Czech literature for a long time - and even outside the category of first novels, it is an exceptional piece of prose in the Czech context.“

– Daniel Mukner, ČT ART

„Last Summer doesn‘t even want to shock, deal with a trauma, or at worst sell it. It offers a complex and complicated account of a young girl‘s coming of age. [...] Last Summer escapes clearcut interpretations. That‘s part of what makes it one of the most intriguing debuts of the past year.“

– Jonáš Zbořil, Seznam Zprávy

„The novella is a candidate for the debut of the year [...] Ambrožová has convincingly portrayed the healthy development of a teenage girl without slipping into cheap didacticism.“

– Kateřina Čopjaková, Aktuálně.cz

Fifteen-year-old Hana is in love with a neighbour who is eighteen years older. The doctor lives in the house next door with his partner and young son. The girl attends a school that annoys her, has problems with her mother, hardly communicates with her father, dresses extravagantly and must be perceived as indifferent and arrogant by those around her. She can get excited about anything - and just as quickly abandon it. Due to circumstances, but also due to her stubbornness, she gets closer to the neighbour than would be desirable...

A provocatively cheeky and stylistically sovereign confession of a young girl about the complicated time of adolescence, frantic and transitional, in which we have no control over the present or the future, and are pushed into important decisions by circumstances rather than being their instigators. Forbidden love, defiance of teachers and parents, dreams and hopes that inevitably clash with reality. How do you grow up and find your own way when those from whom you expect answers are not honest with you?

Dorota Ambrožová (* 1994) comes from Olomouc. She studied Radio and Television Dramaturgy and Screenwriting at JAMU in Brno. In addition to creative work, she also writes cultural journalism. She hosts the cultural podcast Promluv do ní, works as a documentary filmmaker for Paměť národa, and collaborates with the Kreativní Česko platform. She is married, has two children, lives and works in Olomouc.

The House in Matoušova Street

Author

Internationally known best-selling Czech author

Strong, recognizable literary voice

Modern European history

In 1927, Eduard Schwarz, a widower, a Jewish lawyer, bought a house in Matoušova Street in Smíchov in order to acquire a decent residence for himself and his family. He was lucky to die before the Second World War began. In her novel, Tereza Boučková, who lived in the house from birth to adulthood and returned there again a few years ago, gives us the story of Schwarz‘s descendants, as well as other inhabitants of the house, woven into the history of the twentieth century, spanning almost

a hundred years. The author traces their fates literally on the spot, and it is so intense that the reader does not want to put the book down until he or she has finished it. With emotion, irony, and sadness, she writes about people whom both monstrous ideologies, Nazism and Communism, wanted to humiliate, rob, imprison, or murder.

Tereza Boučková (1957) is a Czech writer, screenwriter and publicist. Due to her family background, she was unable to study under the communist regime, and after the signing of Charta 77 she worked as a cleaner, packer, postmistress and housekeeper. She finished her first book, Indiánský běh (Indian Run, translated into German, Dutch and Hungarian), describing the environment of dissent, before November 1989; in 1990 she received the Jiří Orten Prize. This was followed by her short prose books Křepelice (1993) and Když milujete muže (1995), and in 2013 she published a book of short stories called Šíleně smutné povídky (Madly Sad Stories). She has also published three collections of short texts, originally written as magazine columns: Jen tak si trochu schnít - fejetony o mužích a lidech (2004), Boží a jiná muka - fejetony o lásce ke kolu (2010) and Závod s časem - 99 nejrychlejších fejetonů (2018). In 2008, she published an autobiographical novel Rok kohouta (The Year of the Rooster, translated into German, Slovenian, Hungarian, Spanish, Egyptian Arabic, Polish, Croatian, Bulgarian, Italian, Albanian), which became the best-selling Czech book of the year. Bedřich Smetana

– A Biography

Original, thorough biography of one of the most influential Czech composers of the 19th century

By the author of successful books about Olga Havlová, Věra Čáslavská and other important personalities

An attempt to shed a new light on the life and work of Bedřich Smetana

Franz Liszt was his closest friend. Gustav Mahler promoted his operas and Arnold Schönberg appreciated his late work. His Vltava (Moldau) is world known and Japanese school children sing it every morning. Yet apart from the Czech Republic, Bedrich Smetana is considered one of many other “national” composers of the European 19th century.

In his new biography Pavel Kosatík, an influential author of essays and biographies about politicians, sportsmen, and intellectuals, sees Smetana as an important representative of European music. He thinks that world-class music did not begin to emerge in this country with Antonín Dvořák, but already with Smetana. Unfortunately, in his time it had not yet been able to reach the world, and as everybody considered his music so much

Zápasy slepého muže

Bedřich Smetana

„Czech“, perhaps not enough thought was given to it. It‘s never too late to start putting things right, and now might be a good time to do so. It is a pity if the world only knows Smetana‘s opera The Bartered Bride, the symphonic poem Vltava and the string quartet „From My Life“. The world could appreciate also the operas Dalibor, The Kiss and The Two Widows, the whole symphonic cycle of My Country, the cycle of ‚Swedish‘ symphonic poems, and a number of brilliant pieces written for piano. Let us love Bedřich Smetana more. Let us get to know him better. And let‘s show him to the world.

Pavel Kosatík (1962) is an influential Czech intellectual, writer, screenwriter and publicist. He is mainly interested in the modern history of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. He is the author of more than 30 books, a number of scripts for films and TV series, and a comic book series on modern Czech history. An important part of his work are biographical books and book interviews, among others about Olga Havlová, Emil Zátopek and Věra Čáslavská. He approaches his subjects in a novel way, offering new points of view, and for him the individual is always the key to understanding the times. Several of his books were published in Polish (České snění, the biography of Olga Havlová), the book about Emil Zátopek was translated into English (Emil the Runner) and some shorter texts have been published in other languages.

The Troubles of Sekora the Human Barbara Šalamounová

Original concept, excellent comic artwork

A look at the modern history of Europe through the dramatic fate of the prominent artist and illustrator Ondřej Sekora, creator of Ferdy the Ant

A biography with elements of a gamebook

Ondřej Sekora, the main hero of the comic, was first a cartoonist, an enthusiastic sports reporter, also a sportsman himself, who brought rugby from France to Czechia and translated its rules. (This makes the Czechs unique in the world, because unlike other countries, they have their own Czech rugby terminology.) During his two stays in France when emplyed by the newspaper Lidové noviny. Sekora also drew for French magazines, among others for the magazine l‘Auto of Mr. Desgrange, who was the founder of the Tour de France, which Sekora visited with him.

Sekora was very interested in the world of insects, as was his main artistic role model Wilhelm Busch, a German artist born 50 years earlier. Like Busch, Sekora was also a comic author, especially of serialized picture stories, and later he became a distinguished writer and illustrator for children.

In addition to many other children‘s stories, he was the author of books about the famous character Ferdy the

Ant, a proper and hard-working fellow whose friend is the know-it-all Beetle Baggins.

During the Nazi era, he was a brave husband who went to three labour camps rather than leave his Jewish wife. After the war he became a communist, hoping for better times, but he quickly retreated back to his world of cartoon figures for children, which was his paradise. He was a loving father and friend to all the little people and animals.

In the late 1950s, co-founded a children‘s drawing programme for Czech television, and its new version is still broadcast today.

All of this can be found in this graphic gamebook novel, which you can read either from A to Z, or you can also find your own way in it - jumping from the main chapters to the side chapters, and from there either elsewhere or back to the main track again, while learning primarily about the stages of Sekora‘s life that interest you most.

Barbara Šalamounová doc. M. A. comes from a Czech-German artistic family. Her work focuses on illustration, comics, animation, and designing film puppets - mainly for feature films. She is the author of the character of the Ropák /Oilgobblers/ from Jan Svěrák‘s film of the same name /Student Oscar 1988/ and is the first Czech artist to use in her Czech-German animated film „Isn‘t the fly my sister?“ not only 2D cartoon but also 3D computer animation. In 2011, she founded the studio of Comics and Illustration for Children at the University of Pilsen, Faculty of Design and Art Ladislav Sutnar, where she was the head until 2019. In 2014, she received an associate professorship and in 2019 she returned to freelancing. She also organizes Czech and German /and simultaneous/ art workshops for children and adults. Her latest illustrated books for children include „Kařut and Řabach“ by Olga Stehlíková and the comic book „Images from Czechoslovak History“.

In addition, she takes care of the estate of her father and mother, the artists Jiří and Eva Šalamounovi, and has established the Šalamoun Foundation (Nadační fond Šalamounovi).

Just Relationships Honza Vojtko

Bestselling Czech author

Not only a practical guide for everyday life, but also a valuable tool for anyone who wants to better understand themselves and develop healthier and more meaningful relationships.

„Am I really just like my mother?“

„You like animals better than people!“

„No money? Yes, I mind!“

„You‘re more at the office than at home...“

The latest book by psychotherapist Honza Vojtko shows that the important relationships in our lives are not only the intimate ones. The author looks at relationships from a broader, perhaps surprising perspective: we establish them with both living beings and inanimate objects. We can form bonds with time, with God, but we also

form similar bonds with money and buy property with vigour. The book, based on the latest scientific findings, seeks to answer many questions. For example, how much ties within the family influence us in forming any kind of relationship, or why is a job a necessary evil for some and a second home for others, or why do the bad habits of some colleagues drive us to distraction? And last but not least, whether or not we are able to form relationships at all.

Červen vzal hůl a máchl s ní nad ohněm.

Potom měsíčkům pěkně poděkovala a vesele pospíchala domů.

Holena popadla jahody a všechny je i s macechou naráz snědly, Marušce ani nepoděkovaly, ani nenabídly.
