The Chinook Shawl pattern instructions included with Lace Sampler This true lace knit with patterning on both sides is still easy enough for new lace knitters to make. From a beginning row of eyelets, the lace pattern grows to resemble rippling waves, fish scales, or the surface of clear water viewed from below. The piece is knit with 2 strands of yarn held double throughout, in different combinations, to produce graduated shading from light to dark.

You will need US Size 8 32" circular needles or longer and US Size 11 dpns or circular needles.

The Pyrifera Scarf pattern instructions included with Lace Sampler This scarf features a waving pattern of fronds. Make it as long or as short as you like—each 10-row repeat gives you about an inch in length. This scarf can easily be made with less than one hank of any included lace yarn. You will need US Size 4 straight or circular needles.

Note: The Chinook shawl will use the entire sampler, however, you can omit the contrasting border to have enough yarn leftover to create a complimentary Pyrifera scarf.

Use a Lifeline to Enjoy the Freedom of Lace

Some lace knitters thread a “lifeline” through their stitches every few rows (or every pattern repeat) so that, if they make an error, they can rip back their work and easily re-do a section.

The lifeline works as a stopper when you rip back so that you may pick up stitches and yarnovers with ease.

Step One:

Thread a fine piece of yarn or thread (or even waxed dental floss!) through the tiny hole in the metal screw tip of your Options cables

Step Two:

Knit as directed in your pattern. It is best to pick an unpatterned “rest” row that is at the beginning or end of a pattern repeat.

Tips for using lace lifelines: 1) To best keep track of your lace chart, use a lifeline on the first row of every pattern repeat. This way, if you make an error and need to rip your work back, you’ll know exactly where to pick up the pattern and keep going.

2) Choose a smooth yarn or heavy weight thread in a contrasting color for your lifeline. The smoothness of the yarn will help keep it from “sticking” to your live stitches and pulling them out of shape. The contrasting color will make it easier to see your lifeline and help you pick up stitches.

3) Mistakes can be really frustrating, but don’t rip out your work too quickly. You could distort the lace pattern and end up with distorted, misshapen knit fabric. Ripping your work back gently also helps you avoid breaking the delicate lace yarn.

4) Make sure that the length of yarn you use as a lifeline is much wider than your knitted work. Knitted fabric is stretchy, and stretching your work out as you knit may cause stitches to drop off of a too-short lifeline.

Step Three:

When you complete your row, remove the contrast yarn from your needle and pull through so that there is enough tail showing on either side of your knitting. You now have a lifeline.

5) You can tie the ends of your lifeline to coilless safety pins or stitch markers to prevent it from sliding out of your stitches.

Handling delicate lace yarn Part of the appeal of lace is its fragile beauty. Lace yarns are delicate, and it’s best to treat them gently in order to avoid breakage and tangling. A yarn swift is a great tool for handling a skein of lace weight yarn. It supports the skein without stretching out the yarn, allowing you to wind a ball gently by hand or using a ball winder.

After completing the designated row, insert a piece of contrasting thread through the stitches of that row.

Use any thread that is finer than the yarn you are using, yet has a fair amount of twist and body, e.g. crochet thread.

Be careful to not wrap the lifeline thread around the knitting needle, and do not insert the lifeline thread through any markers. The lifeline thread when inserted properly will travel from stitch to stitch just below the knitting needle.
