Modern Classics Christmas Stockings Begin the holiday season by hanging these colorwork stockings from your mantle! Each kit contains instructions for a traditional Scandinavian inspired snowflake motif stocking as well as a more modern abstract design stocking. There is also an alphabet chart to customize each stocking with the recipient’s name (up to seven letters).

If you have never knit socks before, do not be intimidated by these stockings!

These stockings are knit as a straight tube in stranded two color knitting, with a quick interlude to hold the heel stitches. The toe and heel are worked after the stranded knitting is done, and they are decreased like the top of a hat. The stocking is then finished with an applied i-cord edge and a loop so you can hang your stocking up right away. This kit comes in blue and white and also green and gold, so you can choose a stocking that matches your home décor.

DPNs – Avoiding "ladders" between your needles

"Ladders," or vertical columns of loose yarn between stitches, can occur between DPNs because your tension changes when you switch to a new needle. There are several ways to remedy this problem.

Add more DPNs Try dividing your stitches among 4 working DPNs instead of 3.

Change tension Knit the second stitch on the new DPN more tightly, and it will adjust the tension change between the DPNs. Move end stitches on DPNs around Slip your end stitches to the next DPN so you don’t have a vertical ladder.

East Meets West Bag

Inspired by rich Russian and Chinese florals, this bag is worked in the traditional stranding techniques of Europe. But there’s a twist-short rows, intarsia and duplicate stitch help to make this bag truly unique. This satchel is created in three pieces and sewn together. The strap is knit first, with a section of short rows to widen the bag’s base. The front and back are knit as one piece and then cut apart to be attached separately to the strap; the front flap is knitted on last. The strap and front/back are both knitted in stranded colorwork, while the front flap is intarsia. An i-cord border finishes off the piece. For stability, this bag should be reinforced and lined. All Thumbs There are a number of different types of thumbs that you can use while knitting mittens and gloves. Each is suited to different project types and has a slightly different feel when worn, so make sure to experiment to find the one best suited to your project!

GUSSET These gussets protrude from the side of a mitten. They are reversible, so they could be worn on either hand.

Instructions for a gusset Between the palm and back of your mitten, pm, inc 1, pm.

Knit 1 row even Increase round: work to first marker, sl m, inc 1, k to marker, inc 1, sl m Work next 2 rows even Repeat the increase round every three rounds, and always increase after the first marker and before the second marker.

No Gusset

NO GUSSET These mittens have thumbs placed on the palm side of the hand. The thumb is farther to the right or left depending on which hand corresponds to the mitten.

This type of thumb is great for colorwork mittens because you can match the thumb patterning to the palm and it becomes almost invisible!

Instructions for no gusset After you have worked 3" from the wrist, take a length of contrasting waste yarn and knit half an inch of stitches. Slip those stitches back onto your left hand needle and reknit them with your mitten yarn. When the mitten is finished, remove the contrasting color, pick up the stitches in the round, and knit a thumb.

Afterthought Thumb

AFTERTHOUGHT THUMB Afterthought gussets are great if you don’t want to think about where the thumb goes and want to make sure that the mitten fits first. Also, afterthought thumbs work best if you’re knitting with sticky wool that won’t unravel when you cut it.

Instructions for afterthought thumb Finish knitting your mitten. Take a pair of scissors and snip one stitch in the center of where you would like your thumb to stick through. Unravel the yarn for a few stitches on each side of the hole. Pick up stitches around the edges of the hole in the round, and knit a thumb. Weave in the ends of your yarn.

Tips and tricks for mittens and gloves GAUGE Remember the phrase, “fits like a glove”? That definitely applies here! Take the time to check your gauge in the round. Also, remember to wash your swatch the way the mitten or glove will be washed in order to avoid shrunken or saggy mitts!

EASE You want your gloves to have either no ease or a little negative ease to fit. Mittens can have a little positive ease-it’ll allow your fingers to wiggle a bit.

IDENTICAL GLOVES & MITTENS Take detailed notes about how you knit your first mitten or glove, so your second mitten or glove is identical. This includes making any changes to the pattern, like adding extra length to the cuff or fingers, or noting which cast on technique you used.
