Cargo Securement Requirements

CVSR AR 121/2009

17 (4) A driver, a carrier or an owner of a commercial vehicle shall ensure that cargo transported by a commercial vehicle is contained, immobilized or secured, so that it cannot: (a) Leak, spill, blow off, fall from, fall through or otherwise be dislodged from the commercial vehicle (b) Shi upon or within the commercial vehicle to such an extent that the commercial vehicles stability or maneuverability is adversely affected.

Cargo– means all ar cles or material carried by a vehicle, including those used in the opera on of the vehicle.

Reduced Cargo Securement for Hauling Hay Bales

17 (5) The provisions of sec ons 10 and 22 of NSC Standard 10 do not apply to a commercial vehicle that is registered as a class 2 commercial vehicle, or a commercial vehicle that is operated under contract with a farmer for the purpose of hauling hay, used either singly or in combina on with one or more trailers, when it is transpor ng stacks or round or rectangular bales of hay or straw within a 50 kilometer radius of the loads place of origin, if: (a) The vehicle while transpor ng the load does not exceed: (i) The posted speed limit, where the posted speed limit is 80 kilometers per hour or higher, and (ii) The vehicle is not operated on any highway or por on of a highway listed in Schedule 7 except to cross the highway www.kneehillcounty.com * For the full Traffic Safety Act, visit www.qp.alberta.ca

Additional Cargo Securement Requirements

NSC Standard 10

Performance Criteria 5 (2) The Cargo securement system shall provide a downward force equal to at least 20% of the weight of an ar cle of cargo if the ar cle is not fully contained within the structure of the vehicle.

General Requirement

9 Cargo shall be firmly immobilized or secured on or within a vehicle by structures of adequate strength, blocking, bracing, dunnage or dunnage bags, shoring bars, e‐downs or a combina on of these.

Transporting Goods

VER122/2009

65 (1) A person shall not use a vehicle to transport goods unless (a) The vehicle is constructed to carry the goods, and (b) There is equipment on the vehicle or a ached to the vehicle that is capable of securing the goods to ensure that the vehicle can be operated safely when loaded and without danger of : (i) Turning over the vehicle, or (ii) The load shi ing, swaying, blowing off, falling off, leaking or otherwise escaping.

Weights, Permits, Road Bans Please note that Alberta Weights, permits, and road bans are only valid on provincial highways and roads.

Addi onal permits must be obtained, and weights and road bans must be compiled with each respec ve municipality and county travelling through.

Implements of Husbandry

OLVC AR320/2002

8(1) A person who is less than 14 years old shall not drive an implement of husbandry on a highway (2) A person shall not permit another person who is less than 14 years old to drive an implement of husbandry on a highway.

6 The provisions of sec on 4 with respect to the width of a commercial vehicle do not apply to: (a) A rubber red farm tractor equipped with a dozer blade, if conspicuously displayed on each side of the widest part of the farm tractor, or displayed at the extremi es of the blade, there are, (i) When the farm tractor is used during daylight, warning flags and (ii) When the tractor is used during darkness, (A) Warning lights, or (B) Warning flags made of fluorescent material that are adequately illuminated by the farm tractor’s working lights; (b) Farm equipment loaded on a trailer (i) During daylight, if warning flags are displayed at the widest part of the vehicle or load, or (ii) During darkness, if warning lights are displayed at the widest part of the vehicle or load; (c) Any other farm equipment (i) During daylight, or (ii) During darkness, if warning lights are displayed at the widest part of the vehicle or load

8 The provisions of sec on 4 with respect to the width and height of a commercial vehicle do not apply to (a) A commercial vehicle transpor ng hay or straw within a 50‐kilometre radius of the load’s place of origin if: (i) The load is not more than (A) 3.2 meters in width, and (B) 5 meters in height from the surface of the highway, and (ii) When the load is being transported during darkness, adequate warning lights are displayed on the extreme corners of the load or vehicle, whichever is wider (b) A commercial vehicle transpor ng stacks of round bales of hay or straw within a 50 kilometer radius of the loads place of origin if: (i) The load is not more than: (A) 4 meters in width, and (B) 5 meters in height from the surface of the highway, and (ii) When the load is more than 3.2 meters in width and is being transported during darkness, there are displayed: (A) To the front of the vehicle a dimensional sign that complies with a sign shown in Schedule 2 or 3

Farm Dimensional Length Requirements

4 (m) operate farm equipment when: (i) The farm equipment, including any load, exceeds 2.6 meters in width, (ii) The height of the highest point of the farm equipment, including any load, is greater than 4.15 meters from the surface of the highway, or (iii) The overall length of the farm equipment, including any load, exceeds 23 meters

32 (1) in this sec on and sec ons 33 to 36 (h) “self‐propelled floater implement of husbandry” means a motor vehicle that is designed, adapted or modified exclusively for the field applica on of fer lizers. (i) 36 Self propelled floater implement of husbandry. No person shall operate a self‐propelled floater implement of husbandry on a paved highway at any me during which the implement is carrying a load.

Trip Inspection Reports for Farm Plated Vehicles Wri en pre‐trip inspec on reports are NOT required to be produced to a Peace Officer when stopped. However, every vehicle registered over 4500 kgs must complete a trip inspec on before opera ng their vehicle for the day.

Daily Trip Inspection Requirements CVSR AR121/2009 10 (2)Unless otherwise provided in this Regula on, an owner or carrier shall not permit a driver to drive, and a driver shall not drive, a commercial vehicle unless (a) The commercial vehicle has been inspected in accordance with the daily trip inspec on requirements set out in this sec on; and (b) No major defect was detected in the vehicle during the daily trip inspec on referred to in clause (a)

Log Books For Farm Plated Vehicles Log Books are NOT required for farm vehicles operated within the Province. However, log books for farm vehicles may be required in other jurisdic ons.

CVIP’s or annual mechanical inspec ons are NOT required on farm plated vehicles. However, farm vehicle are legislated to be in the same working order as every other commercial vehicle on the road.
