Uxbridge Centenarians awarded Boston Post Canes

In 1909, Mr. Edwin A. Grozier, Publisher of the Boston Post, a newspaper, forwarded to the Board of Selectmen in over 400 towns in New England a gold-headed ebony cane with the request that it be presented with the compliments of the Boston Post to the oldest male citizen of the town. These canes were used as a gimmick to attract readers. The Boston Post went out of business in 1956, but the Town of Uxbridge continues this tradition.

On August 17th, special canes were awarded to Michael Pasichny and Mae Wrona. Both of whom turned 100 years old this year and live in Uxbridge. Mae’s birthday was June 5th, 1920 and she has lived in Uxbridge for most of her life. Michael’s birthday was August 3rd, 1920, a U.S. Marine who served his country. The canes were presented by Susan Franz and Steve Mandile on behalf of the Uxbridge Board of Selectmen. The Uxbridge Senior Center helped coordinate this event.

Sheriff Evangelidis and members of the WCSO Farming Staff were in Uxbridge, Mendon and Milford on Tuesday, August 18th to deliver and donate hundreds of pounds of fresh organic vegetables to the Uxbridge Senior Center, Mendon Senior Center & Milford Senior Center. The veggies are grown from their 15 acre organic farm at the jail. Their harvest season has begun, and over the next few months they will be donating 500 - 900 pounds per day to help local senior centers, food pantries and meals on wheels programs.

DAR Chapter dedicate grave marker at Evergreen Cemetery

Captain Job Knapp Chapter of the Daughters of the American revolution dedicated a marker on the grave site in Evergreen Cemetery of Sally Allen one of the first members of the DAr in Douglas in 1904. Sally Allen was the Daughter of Henry reynolds who was a revolutionary Patriot who served near Newport rI, her Grandfather Samuel Mitchell was also a revolutionary War Patriot. At the time she joined the Chapter she was 96 years old. The DAr recognizes members who at the time of their membership were rEAL DAUGHTErS. All members have ancestors who served in the revolution but it was rare to have a real daughter become a member.

The Captain Job Knapp Chapter would like to find anyone who might be related to Sally Allen or her daughter Ann Bowen. Some of the 35 women who were original members were descendants of Job Knapp: Flora Perry, Almira Whittemore, Ola rossell and Augusta Prentice. Other original members included: Louise Holbrook, Arvilla Batchellar Leonard, Maud McClellan, Flora Chase, Abbie Marsh, Florence Pine, Sarah Brown, and Myrtis Harris. The Jencks sisters were also early chapter members. They would also like to meet anyone whose family members were members of the chapter, and still live in the area. DAr members are today, “One in a million members.”
