HIDALGO, TEXAS
FA L L S T U D I O 2 0 1 9
Hidalgo, Texas is located in southern Hidalgo County. It is located across the Rio Grande River
from the Mexican city of Reynosa, Tamaulipas. The town was first settled by Spanish colonists led by José de Escandón circa 1749. The colony was known by multiple names: La Habitación, Rancho San Luis, and San Luisito. The population of Hidalgo, TX is 99.2% Hispanic or Latino. The Hidalgo Viejo Historic District, “Old Hidalgo,” is comprised of six buildings from the late 19th century. I am focusing on three of the six buildings, a post office, built in 1839, Rodriquez General Store, a two-story brick construction built in 1890 and the Rodriguez Pioneer House, built in 1890. The design for Hidalgo Viejo is to promote a walkable environment to encourage community engagement and cultural awareness in a unique border town.
Creating a walkable community in the Hidalgo Viejo Historic District, comprised of the post office, built in 1839. The Post was proposed as a restaurant and outdoor gathering space to bring the community together while enjoying traditional Mexican cuisine.
Rodriguez General Store
Ground level
The wood flooring was applied by each entrance to create way finding. The carpet creates reading/ study zones for friends and family. Materials were chosen to compliment the existing brick and add a pop of color.
Rodriguez General Store
Second level
The second floor gives the community an opportunity to collaborate and/ or study in private.
Green acoustical features were designed to to create a relaxing, natural setting.
The Rodriguez Pioneer House, originally built in 1890 was proposed as an Ice Cream Parlor and weekend Farmer's Market.
The Texas citrus industry is located in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, with about 85 percent of the acreage in Hidalgo County. This greatly inspired my design.
This narrow building creates a perfect spot for a pop up ice cream parlor for the community. With orange groves behind the parlor, families are welcome to sit outside.

Rehabilitation projects must meet Standards applied
to
projects in a reasonable manner, taking into consideration economic and technical feasibility. The
Standards apply to historic buildings of all periods, styles, types, materials, and sizes. They apply to both the exterior and the interior of historic buildings. The Standards also encompass related landscape features and the building’s site and environment as well as attached, adjacent, or related new construction.
The concept is a dialogue between old vs new. The entrance door to George Washington Carver holds significance through its detailing. Photos from the past and present have been taken by the entrance because of its unique design features. The exploration of innovative design through organic features is a contrast from the existing structure. Using these organic features, similar to the detailing of the door entrance, will guide visitors through each space as wayfinding. This design concept recognizes the preservation of the old, while also recognizing the new.
The museum is a unique pass through space that is currently being staged as the exhibit. This room is near the entrance where artifacts from Carver Highschool are displayed. The gentle cascade of natural light adds to the character of this room, bouncing off of the wood planked flooring, creating a sense of warmth and an overall feeling of peaceful well-being. Added features include a ceiling system that allows for the tailored configuration of morphing fins and baffles. Seating space to reflect and simple cubed display cases to protect the artifacts.
The Memorial Courtyard is extremely significant as its sightline is directly adjacent to the memorial garden that highlights the sculptural installation, “That Which Might Have Been, Birmingham 1963.”s The sculptures encapsulate the harsh reality of racial tension and radical discrimination in America.
Surprisingly, this room served as the original school cafeteria before the program expanded and moved into the second phase building addition. The location of this room is extremely significant as its sightline is directly adjacent to the memorial garden that highlights the sculptural installation, “That Which Might Have Been, Birmingham 1963.”
The second floor of the shop has the potential to be a flexible space for locals to use, This is a rentable space for companies to invest in if there is a need for extra space, When it comes to the design, the space continues the flow of the ceiling system similarly to the main building, yet gives a different feel. Using cooler tones as a contrast to the wood ceiling design, this space is a combination of soothing and bright.
