Koelnmesse has been one of the largest and most successful trade fair companies for more than 90 years. It is one of the most important drivers of growth and innovation in the sector and in its region, thanks to the more than 80 trade fairs, exhibitions, guest events and special events that it stages annually. Together, all of these events attract about 47,600 exhibitors and 2.6 million visitors to the exhibition centre every year.

Koelnmesse 3.0 is the most comprehensive modernisation programme in the company’s history. This programme is making Koelnmesse, the world’s fifth-largest trade fair venue, ready for the trade fair and event business of the future, which will be characterised by • digitisation, • a stronger focus on events, • parallel trade fairs and • new formats that combine congresses with exhibitions (CONFEX®).

Modern, versatile and clearly structured

The plans for Koelnmesse 3.0 focus on ensuring solid funding and the smooth progression of the construction and modernisation measures. The investments are covered by the company’s own funds and by long-term loans. In the first step, most of the funds will be used to modernise and renovate the more than 200,000 square metres southern section of the exhibition centre. The roads and the visitor guidance system will also be substantially improved in this part of the grounds. Another focus is on the adjacent logistics and parking areas. New buildings such as Hall 1plus, CONFEX® and the Terminal will give the exhibition centre a modern look, create space for new event formats and provide more flexibility. A closely coordinated sequence of construction measures and trade fair times will enable Koelnmesse to modernise the exhibition centre without interrupting operations or diminishing the quality of the events in any way.

It will greatly accelerate the implementation of Koelnmesse 3.0 and significantly shorten the construction period. With CONFEX®, Koelnmesse 3.0 will offer an innovative architectural solution for a future-oriented trend in the international trade fair business: the increasingly close interconnection between conferences and trade fairs.

An innovative mix of conference and exhibition

Koelnmesse has created the CONFEX® brand especially for this event format. The futuristic complex, which will cover 5,500 square metres, will be a trade fair hall, a conference venue and an event hall rolled into one. It will offer space for conferences with up to 4,000 participants, thus filling a gap that has existed for years in the range of available congress venues in this region.

More than just a point of arrival: the new Terminal

The central Terminal will be the new centre of the southern section of the exhibition grounds once it is completed in 2024. It will connect the various entrances and halls with one another and enable the different areas of the exhibition centre to be used flexibly. It will further simplify the structure of the southern section and make it intuitively understandable so that visitors do not need to make detours. Shops and catering services will make the Terminal itself an attractive place in which to spend time and will invite visitors to linger. The glazed roof will let daylight shine into the building unhindered.

Koelnmesse 3.0

Although the Cologne exhibition grounds are located close to the city centre, they are easy to reach from every part of the world via diverse transportation systems. This distinction will continue to characterise the exhibition centre in the future, thanks to ICE stops at the local and longdistance train station in Köln-Deutz, the suburban rail connection to Cologne-Bonn Airport, the various tram stops in close proximity to the exhibition centre and the direct connection to the Cologne motorway ring. A new multi-storey car park with around 1,700 parking spaces will be built near the Zoo Bridge. It will help to reduce traffic in the Deutz neighbourhood and also offset the elimination of nearby parking spaces resulting from the Messe-City and Euroforum Nord development projects. A redesigned pedestrian bridge will enable visitors to quickly get from the car park to the exhibition centre.

It takes you only a few minutes to walk to the cathedral, to drive to the motorway, to go by taxi or tram to your hotel, to take the suburban railway to Cologne Airport or to catch an ICE high-speed train that is part of Europe’s long-distance rail network. This is, and will remain, a unique feature of the Cologne exhibition centre.

The complete restructuring of Hall 10 will make it look more like the southern halls. The transition from the white entrance area to the reddish-brown hall facades will create a contrasting yet harmonious overall impression along Deutz-Mülheimer-Straße and encourage visitors to stroll.
