Fibre optic cables offer enormous benefits in today’s communication and network technology (LAN, WAN) and in professional audio and video applications. Optical fibre cables are used in remote data transmission, building cabling and mobile applications (outside broadcast units, event technology, film technology) and much more. KLOTZ Fibre optic products are manufactured to the highest quality specifications, and have short delivery times because at KLOTZ, all relevant departments are under one roof with no need for external service providers, ensuring that production is optimised in terms of both time and costs. Fibre optic cable production imposes extremely rigorous demands on the precision of individual work processes; connector assembly requires microscopically accurate precision so that the light signal is transmitted reliably, with low loss and free of interference. Our assembly specialists are experienced and highly qualified. They work with state-of-the-art measurement and testing technology. Special polishing machines are used for all common connector types including E2000, FC, LC, SC or ST connectors with UPC/PC and APC cut. We are one of the leading and most versatile manufacturers of fibre optic products in Europe and are certified to assemble opticalCON DUO, QUAD and DRAGONFLY connectors (certified opticalCON assembler) as well as the SMPTE 3K93 connector series from LEMO or our own KLOTZ SmartBeam DUO to DODEKA connectors with two, four, eight or twelve lenses. Our quality is verifiably verified and documented by state-of-the-art testing and measuring technology. We believe in customer service. Damaged fibre optic cables, regardless of whether they are KLOTZ products or from other manufacturers, are repaired and assembled quickly and reliably in our own in-house service department.

polishing – a key quality criterion
The physical contact between the ferrule ends of a connector is essential to optimum and consistent signal transmission, and requires high-precision polishing. Only the use of high-precision automatic polishing machines can guarantee optimum surface quality. The polishing stage, in which the ferrule ends are polished using a variety of polishing sheets, sealing pressures and time cycles, is the most complex and challenging step in producing high-quality fibre optic cables. Various polishing processes are necessary depending on the connector type. For optimum results, the required polishing parameters have been determined for each connector type in extensive testing series: • Number and duration of polishing cycles • Hardness of polishing pad per cycle • Surface roughness of the polishing sheet per cycle • Connector sealing pressure Quality testing A video microscope with up to 400x enlargement is used in two-dimensional surface analysis. Automatic fault identification systems find and evaluate the smallest scratches, abrasions, traces of adhesive or contamination. Professional three-dimensional evaluations of ferrule endface geometries are performed using an interferometer. The device delivers ultra-high-precision measurements of ferrule tip rounding, projections or recesses, and the central positioning of the fibres. All parameters are evaluated to international standards to provide an automatic pass/fail evaluation of the test specimen.

However, both these categories are only an indirect indication of the key criterion to be tested in an FO cable: optical attenuation, which must naturally be minimized. All premade optical fibres are tested on our FO test rig, using the optical wavelengths for each fibre type to check optical attenuation. The optical characteristics of the fibre optic cable are documented in line with IEC standards.

SmartBeam connectors
Our SmartBeam connectors – DUO to DODEKA 12 - are a class of its own! The hermaphrodite lens connector is ideal for omnidirectional connection technology, for high transmission rates, ideal for video, audio and data including SMPTE 2110 applications. Its ultra-rugged design can cope with > 3000 mating cycles. The connector is also impervious to dust and dirt during outdoor use, with an IP 67 rating offering protection against dust and water ingress. It’s easy to clean using water and a lint-free cloth. Contactless transmission eliminates lens wear and ensures absolute stable long-term insertion loss. The SmartBeam is naturally compatible with international standards and systems, e.g. Fiberfox, Stratos, Optocore, Eurolens, Optocon and FibreCast™ or MIL-DTL-83526/20 connectors and MIL-DTL-83526/21. A multimode or single-mode cable with up to 12 fibers (50/125 µm, OM4 multimode; 9/125 µm, OS2 single-mode), optimized for transmission rates of 10 Gbit/s over a length of up to 10.000 m in single-mode and 550 m in multimode.

A robust metal housing holds a connector with four optical multimode or single-mode PC or single-mode APC channels, based on LC technology. The FO fibres are in physical contact when connected. The automatically closing protective cap with silicone seal provides protection from dirt and water ingress to IP 65 rating. Other features proven in practice include the push-pull lock and extra-strong strain relief. A multimode or single-mode cable with four fibers (4 x 50/125 µm, OM4 multimode; 4 x 9/125 µm OS2 single-mode), optimized for transmission rates of 10 Gbit/s over a length of up to 10.000 m in single-mode and 550 m in multimode.

UPC/PC and APC single-mode fiber connectors single-mode
Besides our standard FC, SC or ST single-mode connectors with UPC/PC polish we also offer E2000-APC; FC-APC, LC-APC connector types with high-quality SC-APC polish. The PC or physical contact polishing style is the most common. UPC, Ultra-Physical Contact, is an advanced polishing style that is considered an improved version of the PC style. Connectors supplied with the UPC polishing style come with enhanced polishing and a better surface finish. APC is short for Angeld Physical Contact. On these connectors the ferrule surface is polished with an angle of 8°. These connectors, feature significantly improved optical performance and are usually used for high-quality and critical connections. The connector offers significantly better return loss than UPC/PC polished connectors. Green LC and SC-APC connectors are comparable in handling and size to the conventional blue PC/UPC connectors. However, ACP connectors are not compatible with PC/UPC connectors.

Our standard FC, SC or ST multimode connectors with UPC/PC polish. The PC or physical contact polishing is the most common polishing style. Ultra Physical Contact, in short UPC is a more advanced polishing method that is considered an improvement over PC polishing. Connectors processed with UPC polishing feature a better surface finish for reduced insertion loss and improved perfomance.

responsibility
As an internationally operating company, we believe that responsibility for our environment and conservation of resources is our task and our duty for the present and future generations. As manufacturers of outstanding ground-breaking products, we have adopted a pioneering role in environmental protection and conservation as a matter of utmost priority. In our view, the use of low-toxicity raw materials and the minimization of our ecological footprint is not only an urgent necessity, but also an honourable duty. We therefore introduced compliance with the terms of the EU‘s RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directive in our company many years ago, long before it actually came into force; our suppliers can vouch for the RoHS compliance of the connectors we use. We have significantly lowered our carbon emissions (with certificate), and ensured that our new production hall has improved insulation in line with the German Energy Saving Ordinance ENEV from 2009.

These measures ensure that we contribute towards protecting the environment. The RoHS directive, or the directive on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment 200/95/EC‘ was adopted in January 2003 by the European Parliament and European Council and was implemented into German national law in March 2005. The aim of the directive is to minimize risks to people and the environment by reducing toxins in the production, use and disposal of electrical and electronic products. It has therefore prohibited the use of lead and other toxic heavy metals including mercury, cadmium and hexavatent chrome and of flame-retardants such as PBB (polybrominated biphenyles) and PBDE (polyfarominated diphenylether) in electrical and electronic products such as household appliances, IT and telecommunications devices and consumer electronics.
