n his 1940 guide to Norfolk, the famous British writer, journalist and educator Arthur Mee said that for travellers looking for English heritage, the county was a paradise. “It has great cliffs and chalk downs,” he wrote, “a history far older than any written documents, delightful rivers, unique still waters, low-lying fens, captivating towns, a historic roll of famous folk and a group of Saxon, Norman, and medieval churches crammed with beauty.” But Norfolk has never been a county to rest on its historic laurels. Today, it’s full of innovation and enterprise, brimming with enthusiasm and creativity, and it’s confidently looking to the future. For the last five years, KL magazine has been showcasing that perfect blend of Norfolk’s past and present; how new generations manage to combine a long and fascinating history with an exciting and vibrant present. On reaching this milestone - admittedly a minor one, given

that the human impact on the county stretches back almost a million years - we thought we’d celebrate by publishing this very special photographic tribute to the Norfolk of today, which features some of the very best photographs from the magazine in addition to a few that have never been published before. It’s a time capsule we hope captures the spirit of the very special place in which we live and work - a literal snapshot that become increasingly fascinating as time goes on. Although a wooden lighthouse had existed on the site since 1665, the Old Hunstanton Lighthouse was built in 1840. Once home to the world’s first parabolic reflector, the lighthouse ceased operations in 1922, since when it has been a private residence and holiday home – with amazing views. Castle Rising in 1928
The double barns of Castle Rising: A Short History
T
he home of Castle Rising Dental Surgery lies in two listed buildings that once belonged to Castle Farm and have been an important element of the ‘villagescape’ of Castle Rising for almost 300 years. While the easterly barn is the older (as proved by a carved plaque dated 1727 at the peak of the western gable), the surgery’s home was built in 1785 and initially provided housing for cattle. As farming became more mechanised, the barns’ became storage facilities – on a map dated to 1856 the area currently occupied by the surgery was used for storing hay. Once a scene of great activity, the barns were used for other purposes once farming ceased at Castle Farm – for a time they were home to a bulb packing business.
Carefully restored and brought up to date by Greville Howard, Baron Howard of Rising, the eastern barn is now home to a branch of Unique Gifts and Interiors, and Castle Rising Dental Surgery in the western barn (since April 1996). The practice itself has evolved over the years, adding a second surgery (and becoming a training practice for new dentists) in 1998, and converting to mainly private treatment in 1999. But that’s not the end of the story – plans are already in place to expand the practice to four surgeries in the near future, writing a new chapter in the long history of the double barns of Castle Rising. We would like to thank local historian Sylvia Cooke for all her help in researching the history of the barns.

How George’s eye for a bargain became part of the history of King’s Lynn...
B
orn in Northampton in 1882, George William Stratford (left) followed in the footsteps of his ironmonger father before travelling to South Africa to seek his fortune. There, he became a successful businessman, railwayman and stationmaster before returning to England and working for the Army Service Corps as an enlister in King’s Lynn during the First World War. George made King’s Lynn his home, and on November 9th 1918, three days before the end of the war, the local newspaper carried an advertisement for Stratford’s Army Supply Stores in the town’s Norfolk Street. In addition to selling new (and used) army boots and clothing to farmers and workers of all trades, George sold virtually anything he thought would be a successful bargain and fulfil the needs of local people. It was a winning idea, and as the business grew branches of Stratfords opened in Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk, and George was helped by his daughter Audrey – who eventually took over the running of the company following his death in 1951. Audrey Stratford was a woman genuinely ahead of her times. An astute businesswoman fascinated by new technology, she was a respected authority on knitting (she even wrote a book on the subject) and collected an unusual and extensive archive of memorabilia, records and documents detailing the heritage of King’s Lynn – an archive so large it eventually took a year to catalogue. As the guiding force behind one of West Norfolk’s oldest and best-known family firms, it’s rather fitting that she also founded the Audrey Muriel Stratford Charitable Trust to ensure the continued preservation of the history of King’s Lynn. As Stratfords itself expanded and moved into the industrial sector, the business relocated from the town centre to purpose-built premises in North Lynn in 1995. Today, it’s one of the largest suppliers of safety and personal protection equipment in the whole country, offering a huge range of everything from heavy duty workwear to catering and corporate clothing, from gloves to hi-visibility jackets. And Stratfords is still supplying high quality boots! Because although the business has changed and grown over the years, it has remained true to George's vision of satisfying the needs of the local business community - and offering great value. The story of Stratfords is a remarkable local success story.

orfolk Leisure was first started in the early 1980’s by Nick Anderson who manufactured garden furniture and supplied to Garden Centres and Pubs across East Anglia. Since then, the business has grown significantly and more recently they’ve won a variety of National awards, grown their team and moved to bigger premises. 1925 Maurice Dickerson began operating as a haulage contractor. Then in 1937 he founded M. Dickerson Ltd.
1970’s The company quarried ied at Waterbeach, recycled a road building material from various disused airfields.
1948 The present site at Waterbeach was bought for the extraction of sand and gravel. During this time the company also operated a petrol station, car sales and vehicle recovery service from Teversham Corner Garage on Newmarket Road.

Maurice Dickerson retired and handed over the reins to his son John. The company continued to grow and in 1964 moved to King’s Hedges road site before moving to its current Waterbeach site in the early 1970’s

1980’s The company expanded into contracting and completed various high profile road contracts across the County. This was when the waste business Donarbon was formed.

How the biggest events in the world can shape our lives for the better... Terry Connolly’s inspirational journey – from soldier to healer e’re all aware of how the conflicts of 1914-18 and 1939-45 changed the world forever on a global scale, and we hardly need reminding that war is still very much with us today. Although the personal effects of war can be terrible and devastating, however, they can also leave a positive legacy, especially when those experiences are used to better the lives of others. Terry Connolly of King’s Lynn joined the Army in February 2007, and found his life taking a dramatic change in direction in a totally unexpected way during a tour of duty in Afghanistan with 58 Field Sqd for the 101 Explosives Ordnance Disposal Regiment.

“I was injured in the most unheroic way imaginable really,” says Terry. “Although I’d needed a couple of stitches for a ricochet wound in the back of my leg, I’d come through pretty much unscathed – until I had an accidental coming together with the piston of a tank.” At first Terry thought the damage was limited to bruising, but after three months he was suffering from a loss of leg strength, muscle atrophy and ‘foot

drop’ – a muscular weakness that left him unable to raise the front part of his foot. Although he managed to finish his tour of duty, Terry was medically discharged in September 2012 and during his rehabilitation at the army’s Personal Recovery Unit in Colchester and Defence Medical Rehabilitation Unit at Headley Court, found himself passed from professional to professional. “Physiotherapists were stumped and the consultants were at a loss,” he says. “I was given pills, I was told to wear a leg brace, and I even had an operation – but nothing really worked.” In the two years it took for the problem to be fully diagnosed (it turned out Terry had crushed his peroneal nerve) Terry embarked on a series of courses, learning about anatomy and the way the body works, and how it experiences pain. Terry studied techniques such as NKT (Neuro Kinetic Therapy) and AiM (Anatomy in Motion) and worked with the treatment’s creator Gary Ward. He also became qualified in the use of P-DTR (Proprioceptive Deep Tendon Reflex) and is currently one of only a handful of people in the entire world offering this as a form of treatment.
“When I saw how effective these approaches were and what a difference they made to me,” says Terry, “I realised I could help other people who’d been suffering from pain for a number of years and hadn’t received any lasting relief.” Terry opened The Fitness Studios in King’s Lynn with his partner Jane Cole, and now complements her fitness classes by relieving people’s pain, locating and freeing inhibited muscles and increasing their natural movements. “There’s nothing magical or particularly mysterious about it,” he says. “It’s simply a new way of looking at your body and how it works as a whole.” There’s no doubt that Terry’s journey from soldier to healer has been an inspirational one. “It’s been a massive career change,” he says. “I’ve gone all the way from fighting in Afghanistan to helping people in King’s Lynn. Back in March 1982, Evergreen Tractors opened on the site of an old engineering works and garage in Wiggenhall St. Germans just outside King’s Lynn, due to an increased demand for tractors and agricultural machinery they became the local John Deere dealer. The thriving business became part of the Doubleday Group in 1999 and still operates from the very same location. Although times have changed and Doubleday now offers everything from ride on mowers to clothing and gifts, the company remains true to its family-run, friendly and local roots – with all three of the founder’s grandchildren actively involved in the business. e hope you’ve enjoyed this special photographic look at Norfolk as it is today – or if you’re reading this at some point in future, we hope you’ve enjoyed seeing how Norfolk looked at some point in the not-too-distant past. Of course, time will never stand still and things will inevitably change. New buildings will appear, the face of our market towns and villages will alter, businesses will grow and develop, and the very landscape of the county will always be at the mercy of the sea. But future readers will hopefully still recognise much of the beauty and heritage gracing the preceding pages. They’ll still be visiting the county’s magnificent buildings and exploring its fascinating past, and they’ll still be supporting the local businesses that are the very centre of a thriving and independent local economy. For KL magazine, one of the greatest joys of the last five years has been discovering just how successful the area is at building on its inheritance. The county doesn’t wallow in the past; it’s inspired by it.
