FINAL MOCKUPS

Project Brief

In Principles of Communication, the first project was to turn an animal into symbols under specific categories. A symbol is a mark, sign, or word that indicates, signifies, or is understood as representing an idea, object, or relationship. In order to generate ideas on the animal chosen, I first started brainstorming visual words, emotional words, sound words, etc. for three animals that I could potentially use for symbols. Then I made a mindmap of the backgrounds, cultures, and anything that sparked excitement and became interested in the Chameleon. One of my favorite qualities about the Chameleon is the way that they change color based off of their mood, not to camoflauge. Most designers use those colors to create symbols for the chameleon, so I thought it would be interesting to take a colorful animal and turn it black and white. After setting my mind on the animal chosen, I started sketching for the specific categories given to think about different ways to convey the animal. Then, I took three sketches from each category and created them in Illustrator. This was difficult for me because I’m not very comfortable using the pen tool, but I became more comfortable as I kept refining. In order for a symbol to be able to be on anything, it has to be able to be blown up or scaled down and still resemble the desired mark. This is why I used a small and a large version of the symbol on my poster.

Symbol Categories

1

GEOMETRIC based on simple geometric shapes (such as straight lines, circles, or squares)

2

MINIMAL what is the smallest amount you can show and still have it be recognizable? Do you need to show the whole animal?

3

ONE-LINE Using one continuous line how can you form a design of your animal or something representative?

4

COLLAGE/CUT & PASTE Cut and paste to form representations of your animal. You can use reference imagery, hand-drawn elements, etc.

5

TYPOGRAPHIC Use the name of your animal, an abbreviation or any combination of the two. Think about what visuals you can convey using just type?

6

BEHAVIORAL

10

how does your animal move? how can you create a symbol to represent your animal from that movement?

10

TEXTURE

11

CALLIGRAPHIC

12

10

ABSTRACT How can you create abstract depictions of your animal?

BADGE/CREST Create badges or crests that represent or feature your animal?

13

OVERLAYED How can you overlay shapes or design elements to create a symbol for your animal?

14

GEOGRAPHY/HABITAT How can you represent your animal with symbols for its habitat or location. Do you need to feature your animal in some way?

15

CHARATER/CARTOON Design a character or mascot of your animal. Think about examples like the Michelin man, cereal mascots, etc

16

Hand-drawn or calligraphic representations of your animal?

9

THICK LINES Use thick bold lines to create symbols for your animal

what textures are unique to your animal? How can you use those textures to create a symbol?

8

DOTS Representative symbols for your animal using dots / circles.

what behaviors make your animal unique that you can design a symbol around?

7

MOVEMENT

SIMPLE SHAPES Use simple geometric shapes (Circles, Squares, Rectangles, Triangles)

16

CULTURAL Create marks based on cultural connotations, history, or folklore.
