AVANT DE LIRE

1. Objective Activate students’ prior knowledge of housing vocabulary. Teaching Tips Ask students what type of housing they live in, or which types are common where they live. Allow them to use a dictionary or search the internet to find appropriate words. They might also illustrate them with photos or drawings. Write the terms on the board. You may also want to bring photos of different types of accommodations.

Enquête : Que peut-on louer pour 500 € par mois ? Vous voulez étudier dans un pays francophone, mais vous ne savez pas où ? Voici les logements que vous pouvez louer pour 500 euros par mois. 1

2. Objective Activate knowledge of prices and compare them with those in the francophone world. Teaching Tips Ask students to supplement the cultural information from the previous activity with information about housing prices in their city. For example: “In Austin, a studio costs… per month.” This discussion will be revisited in the Défi at the end of this chapter.

Montréal, Québec, Canada Un studio de 28 à 44 m2, dans le centre-ville.

Teaching Tips Have students place the data in a table with the following headings: Ville, Type de logement, Superficie, Localisation. Then compare the data and discuss as a class.

3. Objective This reading and its activities require a detailed reading of each caption to glean the following pieces of information: to identify the type of accommodation, the surface area, and the location in each city, as well as a comparison of the data collected.

Ah bon ?!

5. Objective Respond to information found in the text and compare it with prior knowledge. Teaching Tips Allow students to express themselves spontaneously. In this activity, authentic self-expression is more important than accuracy. Students may be surprised to learn that Brussels is inexpensive.

In French ads, an F2 (or T2) is an apartment with a kitchen and a bathroom + two rooms (generally a bedroom and a living room). CC = charges comprises (utilities are included) ch. = chambre (bedroom) sdb = salle de bains (bathroom) One square meter (1 m2) is the equivalent of about 10.5 square feet. A 45 square-meter (45 m2) apartment is about 485 square feet. 88

AVANT DE LIRE

1. Objective The article uses a chambre de bonne as a the stereotypical smallest Parisian lodging. Discuss students’ concepts of “small” housing and how that notion varies in different cultures. Teaching Tips Have students convert the metric surface area to square feet to give them an idea of their relative sizes. Then have them give examples of homes that they consider to be large or small, giving the surface area in square meters. 2. Objective This second pre-reading activity aims to activate or impart knowledge about les bonnes and their accommodations. Teaching Tips Tell students that they are going to read an article about the chambres de bonne and ask them to guess what une chambre de bonne is, based on the images. Then see if they can figure out what une bonne means (a maid), and then describe the kinds of accommodations she might have had. You may want to tell them that the chambres de bonne were servants’ quarters in the past. Today, students often live in them.

3. Objective Read a text to understand and describe characteristics of une chambre de bonne. Teaching Tips Have students first look over the form to understand what they need to look for in the text. Then have them scan the passage to find the required information and highlight it in the text before completing the form. 4. Objective Understand a movie poster. Teaching Tips Have students observe the structure of the poster in three sections: at the top (the women), in the center (the title of the film) and below (the employers). Then help them connect the poster with the information from the reading to understand that the maids live upstairs (on the 6th floor), hence they look down at the apartment below, as if they are leaning on the “balcony” formed by the title. Answers Les femmes du 6e étage sont des employées de maison. Elles sont en haut sur l’affiche, car elles habitent en haut de l’immeuble. 5. Objective React to the information acquired through reading and make cultural comparisons. Teaching Tips Encourage students to think about, describe, and compare these occupations and this kind of housing in their own communities (in English, if necessary). 94

Au XIXe siècle, les bonnes (les employées de maison) des familles riches de Paris vivent dans des chambres d'environ 9 m2. Ces chambres sont sous les toits, au dernier étage de l'immeuble, sans ascenseur. Souvent, il y a une seule salle de bains pour cinq ou six chambres. Aujourd’hui, les chambres de bonne sont occupées par des étudiants.

CHAPITRE 4 Il y a / Il n'y a pas de

PAGE 91

The invariable expression il y a means there is or there are. Il y a is commonly used to point out the presence or the absence of someone or something. Ex. : Dans la cuisine, il y a un frigo. Ex. : Il y a vingt étudiants dans la classe. The negative form of Il y a (there isn’t / there aren’t) must include the preposition de before the noun. Ex. : En Espagne, dans certaines régions, il n’y a pas de chauffage dans les appartements. Ex. : Dans la salle de bains, il n’y a pas d'eau chaude. ! CAREFUL! When spoken in colloquial language, we can hear "ya" [ja] for il y a and "y'a pas" [japa] for il n'y a pas. C'est + adjective

PAGE 93

C’est + a masculine adjective is used to make a general judgment, or to express appreciation or criticism about something. Ex. : La place Rouge ? J'aime bien parce que c'est beau, c'est grand, c'est impressionnant. Ex. : Les chambres de bonne ? C’est génial mais c’est trop petit pour deux personnes ! ! CAREFUL! To express an opinion about someone, use il/elle est + adjective. Ex. : Elle est intelligente, il est sympathique, ils sont gentils Colors

PAGE 97

Colors are adjectives, and like other adjectives, they generally agree in gender and number with the noun they describe. Generally, the feminine is formed by adding an -e to the masculine form and the plural is formed by adding an -s to the singular form. Singular Masculine Feminine (+e)

Pouvoir is a modal verb, meaning it is generally followed by another verb in the infinitive. Ex. : À Pontivy, on peut louer une maison pour 500 euros par mois. Ex. : À Paris, on ne peut pas louer une maison pour 500 euros par mois. REMEMBER! Notice how the negation ne... pas is formed around the conjugated verb.

Ex. : Vous pouvez inviter des amis, mais vous ne pouvez pas être bruyants. Il faut + infinitive

PAGE 99

Il faut is derived from the impersonal verb falloir, which is only conjugated in the third-person singular. Since it is used in many idiomatic expressions, il faut is difficult to translate directly, but can be understood as “one must” or “it is necessary to.” Like the modal verbs pouvoir and devoir, il faut is generally followed by another verb in the infinitive: Ex. : Il faut trouver un appartement. Ex. : Il faut mettre les plantes dans les coins de la pièce. REMEMBER! Notice how the negation ne... pas is formed around the conjugated verb.

Ex. : Il ne faut pas mettre le lit sous la fenêtre. The verb devoir

• Like pouvoir, it is a modal verb, meaning it is generally followed by another verb in the infinitive. Ex. : D'après les règles du feng shui, les plantes doivent être dans les coins. REMEMBER! Notice how the negation ne... pas is formed around the conjugated verb.

Ex. : L’appartement doit avoir des couleurs claires. Il ne doit pas être sombre. • Like il faut, the verb devoir expresses necessity and obligation, but il faut is impersonal and devoir is not. Ex. : Je dois ranger ma chambre (devoir - personal)

I need to tidy up my room.

Ex. : Il faut ranger sa chambre (il faut - impersonal)

One must tidy up one’s room.
