Joseph Campbell’s monomyth, or the hero’s journey, is a basic pattern that is found in many narratives from around the world. This widely distributed pattern was described by Campbell in his book "The Hero with a Thousand Faces," which held that numerous myths share fundamental structures and stages. There is a hero amongst us in every river and stream system across North America, though discrete and unassuming, as it supports underwater ecosystems. In this journey, we are about to explore our hero, the mighty freshwater mussel.
