ZONE 2a: Laboratories Laboratories are placed on the northern side of the building to minimize heat gain and allow for the number of bodies and mechanical equipment being run to heat the spaces.

Forced air is brought up from the basement through a chase and returned back to the basement along the same route.

Venting Skylight The skylight vents air out the top of the building and provides is located on the roof to draw air out but the strong winds from the west should draw air out the top of the atrium space and allow fresh air to enter from below grade.

ZONE 1: Connective Tissue The large atrium space within the center of the building is primarily conditioned by passive heating and cooling. Air is pulled into the basement from windows which are located low to the ground. Air is then treated either by radiant heat transmitted through the curtain wall and stored in the

Screen & Frit The screen along the curtain wall breaks away to reveal views to the outside and allow more direct light into the space. The fritting becomes denser where the screen breaks away to minimize heat gain and provide a smiliar luminance level through the southern facade.

The material characteristics of industrial hemp make it a viable resource for sustainable building. However stigmas and legalites surrounding hemp have limited its development to basic material replacements. This project explored the physical properties of hemp fiber to develop hypotheses regarding its architectural potential.

The Hemp fibers, offer tensile strength, resistence to moisture, and mold, as well as having a net-zero environmental impact, thus, posing an interesting conversation for the future of building. In this proposal the fibers are utilized for their absorbtive, durable, and temperature lenient characteristics.

In each of the Fiber-Climate types developed, the hemp composite aims to create a specific micro-climate influencing interior conditions; humidity, temperature and exposure. Utilizing hemp fiber as structural reinforcing, moisture retention, and for its rough aesthetic positions the proposal within the scope of an intrinsically hemp architecture.

3 - Arial Crane Air-lifts frame to the site.

2 - Pre-Fab Formwork A frame is constructed off-site that will be used to organize the hemp fibers and as form-work for the concrete shell.

1 - Foundation Site poured concrete smooths and preps the area for construction.

4 - Setting Form People on the ground help set and secure the frame/formwork.

5 - Hemp Cordage The hemp fiber is coated in a resin on the areas that will be inbedded in the concrete to prevent cracking due to expansion and contraction.

6 - Shotcrete Shell Next the entire assembly (excluding openings)is covered in concrete on-site at the remote location. Once cured the frame and formwork can be disassembled and removed.

7 - Formwork Removal Finally, the frame is disassembled and removed from the interior leaving thehemp/concrete composite.

C1 -

The domed shape and materials work together to trap the heat and moisture from the hot spring. The hemp functions both to hold moisture as well as insulate the shell. The concrete traps the vapor while providing some thermal mass.

C2 -

Here the shape allows the rising hot vapor to escape, however, the protection from the wind allows the space to maintain a high temperature extending the desirable bathing months into the winter.

C3 -

This climate differs from the others, allowing the air to cross through the space, leaving bathers warm in the water while providing a refreshing air current above. Evaporative cooling provided by the passing the hemp allows the space to be comfortable into the warmer months.
