*May their memories be a blessing
JSSA’s mission is to empower individuals and families to achieve well-being across their lifespan.
DEAR FRIEND,
One year ago, JSSA embarked on a strategic planning process that resulted in, among other things, a new mission for the agency: JSSA empowers individuals and families to achieve well-being across their lifespan.
In other words, our clinicians and professional staff strive to help children, adolescents, adults, and seniors improve their quality of life in the areas where they are struggling. As a multiservice organization, the ways that we empower our clients differ across each of our programs. In Specialized Employment, for example, it may be self-sufficiency, while in Senior Services, it is independence and the preservation of dignity for older adults.
When we implemented our strategic plan in 2017, our primary goals included continuing to improve care, expanding our services to a broader population, and ensuring the long-term viability and relevance of JSSA as an organization. We’ve spent this past year looking top to bottom at ways we can align ourselves with our strategy for future success, and we are excited about the initiatives we launched in 2017:
• Transformation of our Montrose Road building to create a center for comprehensive senior care that will enable us to serve 2,000 additional clients each year, increase JSSA staff by 30, and save more than $500,000 annually in rental costs
• Reorganization of our mental health team to improve access to service, to prioritize clients with the most acute needs, and to more accurately measure the impact of our efforts
Amidst these changes, the agency continued to reach new milestones and receive impressive accolades this past year:
• JSSA earned the highest rating from Charity Navigator for the 9th year in a row, an honor shared by only 2% of nonprofits across the country
• Home Care Pulse named Premier Homecare “Employer of Choice” based on anonymous feedback of staff at all different levels
• AIMS, a new innovative model of care that partners JSSA’s care management services with physician practices, resulted in zero unplanned hospitalizations for high-risk seniors getting home-based care
• Specialized Employment Services received the “Provider of the Year” award from Maryland Works, Inc.
As we look to 2018, our focus remains steady on our mission: empowering individuals and families to achieve well-being. We will continue developing innovative programs and collaborating with other organizations in the community, as well as the broader healthcare system, thanks to the generous support of our donors and the unwavering dedication of our staff, volunteers, and partners.
Sincerely,
Candace Kaplan Todd Schenk JSSA Board President JSSA Chief Executive OfficerMENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

n Co-located programs in the community to reach more people
n Skill-specific workshops and support groups
Unique community partnerships
JSSA’s Assessment Referral & Connection (ARC) Program, now located in three pediatric offices, has screened more than 100 youth in Virginia to identify and address mental health concerns before they become larger issues. Our ongoing Early Childhood Mental Health Program continues to place
JSSA clinicians in area preschools for early identification and intervention with children who may be having challenges in the classroom.
Success stories
JSSA launched Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), a highly effective parent coaching program that teaches caregivers how to manage challenging child behaviors and create positive family relationships.
“My daughter was struggling at school, and her therapist’s recommendations for different therapy models to best address her needs have been relevant and worthwhile. The coping strategies she’s been teaching my daughter, as well my husband and me, have proven to be so valuable, even at home.”
—Carly, mother of a JSSA Mental Health client
Achieving self-sufficiency in the workplace
WHAT WE DO
JSSA’s experienced employment specialists empower individuals with disabilities to achieve long-term career success and self-sufficiency. Our customized approach to career development focuses on individual strengths, interests, and skills. In addition, we have developed long-term working relationships with employers in a variety of sectors such as retail, hospitality, and IT to whom we provide placement services at no cost.
Services include:
n Pre-employment training
n Career assessments
n Job skills and soft skills training n Job development
n Job coaching and retention
Unique hiring relationships
n Career counseling
In the summer of 2017, JSSA partnered with RSV Pools to launch the first-of-its-kind paid internship program for high school students on the autism spectrum. All 16 teens hired and trained as gate guards at various pools exceeded expectations, with 14 of them outperforming their neurotypical counterparts on the job. As a result, RSV Pools is interested in doubling its number of hires in 2018 from JSSA.
Success stories
JSSA’s placement rates far exceed national and state averages, and our six-month retention rate is over 88%.
In 2017, Maryland Works, Inc. named JSSA “Provider of the Year” for our disability employment services. This year, WJLA-TV recognized our award-winning approach and the success of our clients in several news stories.
“[The program is] teaching you how to do things in the real world: communicate with others, self-advocate if you need the help and also learning a lot of new things, making new friends.”
—Nasir, Specialized Employment client and RSV Pools paid summer intern

Premier’s Partners In Care (PIC) Program is a unique collaboration between five senior care-related organizations located at Homecrest House, an independent senior living community in Silver Spring. The focus of PIC is to stabilize the residents of the community by taking a proactive, whole person approach to managing their health care needs, therefore avoiding hospital admissions, readmissions, and possible evictions. In FY17 the program was awarded a Capacity Building Grant by the Health Initiatives Foundation.
Success stories
Premier Homecare received the 2017 Best of Home Care “Employer of Choice” award from Home Care Pulse, an independent satisfaction research firm. This award exemplifies our dedication to providing our employees with a positive work experience, such as providing ongoing training for our caregiving staff. By investing in our employees, we continue to elevate the quality of our service.
“Premier’s services have been such a lifesaver. My dad is in his 80s and would often forget to take all of his pills at the correct times. Now he has a patient and loving caregiver who administers all of my father’s medication and provides him with companionship, which in turn provides me peace of mind.”
—Susan, daughter of Premier Homecare client
Supporting the most vulnerable
WHAT WE DO
JSSA provides a broad spectrum of safety-net services to a diverse population of seniors in Montgomery County to empower them to age in place with dignity. Among those older adults last year were 469 local men and woman who survived the Holocaust. JSSA’s Holocaust Survivor Program services are funded by grants from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, funds from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Holocaust Survivor Emergency Assistance Fund (administered by the Claims Conference); assistance from The Jewish Federation of North America and The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington; and donations from the Jewish community of Greater Washington, the State of Maryland, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Services include:
n Care management
n Meals on Wheels n Counseling and support groups
n Social and educational programs n Financial assistance n Escorted transportation
Unique pro bono programs
Over the years, JSSA has formed partnerships with area organizations to meet the medical needs of our Holocaust survivor clients in safe and welcoming environments.
n Dental care provided by the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity (Washington, DC Chapter) and the Maimonides Dental Society of Greater Washington
n Vision care led by local optometrist Dr. Michael Berenhaus
n Hearing aids supplied, fitted, and adjusted through a partnership with the University of Maryland Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences
Success Stories
JSSA launched a new partnership in 2017 with a primary care geriatric practice that makes house calls in the community to provide care management to at-risk seniors and their caregivers. Funded by the Weinberg Foundation, Ambulatory Integration of the Medical and Social (AIMS) helps seniors address psychosocial and environmental issues that are not covered by the traditional medical system and resulted in zero hospital admissions. Due to our success with AIMS, and the success of our partners Rush Medical Center and Aging Care Connections in Chicago, this model of care is being replicated in 8-10 communities across the country.
“Because of JSSA, my 91-year-old mother has come to a place of a little more peace than she has ever had. You talk to her, make sure that she receives her benefits, make sure she gets where she needs to go, and give her the human honor that is due to her both as a survivor and a person. For this, not only is she grateful but the whole family is as well.”
—Barbara, daughter of Holocaust Survivor Program client
JSSA HOSPICE AND TRANSITIONS
Comforting the terminally ill
WHAT WE DO
JSSA Hospice empowers individuals in the advanced stages of terminal illnesses to direct their end-of-life care and maximize quality of life. Our interdisciplinary hospice teams work collaboratively to address each patient’s specific medical, emotional, and spiritual concerns and to guide family members and other caregivers through the end-of-life process.
Services include:
n Pain management and symptom control
n 24/7 medical oversight
n Emotional support and counseling
n Medications, medical supplies, and durable medical equipment
Unique Support Program
n Nutritional guidance
n Visit with trained volunteers providing massage, pet, and music therapy
n Spiritual support and guidance
n Thirteen months of bereavement support for families
A philanthropically-funded program, Transitions provides emotional support and guidance, as well as referrals to community organizations and services, to individuals with life limiting conditions. The preand post-hospice program includes regular visits from our specially trained volunteers and ongoing support from a nurse coordinator.
Success Stories
JSSA Hospice continues to exceed state and national benchmarks for quality and satisfaction results as reported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. For example, 90 percent of family caregivers would definitely recommend JSSA Hospice to friends and family compared to the national average of 84 percent.
“My husband had been receiving hospice care elsewhere before I made the switch to JSSA, and coming here made all the difference for Stanley. I was especially impressed with our nurses and their help with his trach collar, dressing changes, and medications. I also appreciated Dr. Westerman’s personal visits and the emotional support I received from the hospice social worker. Despite being a complicated patient, JSSA made sure my husband was always well cared for.”
—Rose, wife of JSSA Hospice patient
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
JSSA partnerships within the community allow us to make an impact in the lives of even more individuals and families. Our Synagogue Liaison Program embeds JSSA clinicians in local congregations to offer short-term, on-site counseling for congregants; ongoing support for clergy and staff; and workshops for the congregational community.
Elderly and infirm individuals without a synagogue affiliation can still experience pastoral care and spiritual guidance through JSSA’s Jewish Chaplaincy Services. Our chaplains serve as Jewish resources for residents in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and hospitals, offering meaningful programming and prayer leadership on Shabbat and other holidays.
Give-a-Gift is a seasonal program that provides families of all faiths with gift cards to purchase what they really need and want for the winter holidays. Gift cards allow us to preserve the confidentiality of our clients while affording recipients the dignity of choosing what is most important to them during this gift-giving season, such as holiday food, warm winter clothing, toys for their children, or special items that will make their lives more comfortable throughout the year.
VOLUNTEERING
Nearly 1,100 volunteers provided JSSA 18,696 hours of service in fiscal year 2017. Their invaluable assistance to the agency and our programs included healthy meal deliveries, social support for Holocaust survivors and other older adults, companionship for JSSA Hospice and Transitions patients, and office support.
SPRING BENEFIT
Our partnership with The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington makes it possible for JSSA to touch the lives of so many individuals and families in our community who are struggling to achieve well-being. We are indebted to the Federation’s leaders, staff, and donors for their commitment to JSSA.
JSSA hosted its annual spring benefit, “A Mindful Journey,” on May 7, 2017 at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner. The celebratory and inspiring night featured an emotional video presentation highlighting several extraordinary JSSA clients, a moving acceptance speech from Cherie Artz after receiving the Joseph Ottenstein Award for Community Leadership, and Patrick J. Kennedy’s impassioned keynote about mental health and stigma. The evening’s co-chairs were Susan and Jimmy Pittleman, Sherie Silverman, and Hilary Dworkin and Norman Freidkin.
