SITE: HORNSTULLS SUBWAY STATION BUILDING, HORNSBRUKSGATAN
This project aims to explore how to repurpose a technical building into a public space, more specifically how to repurpose Hornstulls Subway Stations north entrance building into a Hemgård.
The building was designed by the style-forming architects Bengt Lindroos and Hans Borgström, together with their college Nils Arne Rosén at Stockholms spårvägar in 1961-1964.
Hornstulls Subway Station is now up for demolition. The aim of the proposal is to explore one way of how this building can be preserved and reused instead of demolished.
The aspiration of the proposal is to create a generous multifunctional space, accessible for all.

In the interventions and additions of the building a lot of inspiration has come from Söderledskyrkan. A church designed by Bengt Lindroos and Hans Borgström just a few years before the subway station. The buildings are in some ways similar. Both appear quite monolithic and the placement and appearance of the windowsills are almost identical.

But the care of details and materials that can be seen in Söderledskyrkan is lacking in Hornstulls subway. In Söderledskyrkan the raw concrete is softened with complementary materials - pine wood and red brick, and the grand dimensions are balanced by artisanal details. An approach that has inspired my design decisions.

The program and rooms are inspired by a visit to the Hemgård, Timmermansgården, where most of the rooms are multipurpose and general: used for different activities at the different hours of the day. The program will suggest functions for the rooms, but the idea is that this can be changed during time in regard to the needs of Hemgården.

The architect Bengt Lindroos and his wife, the textile artist Gunvor Lindroos, is known for their patterns. The design of the screen panels used in front of the window by the entrance from the subway, the new staircase and to decorate the elevator shaft is founded on one of these patterns.

The Park and the Subway are public rooms that can benefit and benefit from Hemgården. With the elevator reaching the terrass floor of the building - the park gets more accessible, the roof of the building can work as another entrance to the park and the building can offer an alternative to the park when the weather disappoints. The subway station makes Hemgården easy to access from all over Stockholm and Hemgården offers a waiting hall for the commuters.
