Customized Finisher Certificates Presented by Amazon

The Cheer App

Motigo (www.getmotigo.com) is a free iPhone app that works in the background with favorite running and music apps.

Motigo lets friends and family record personalized audio cheers that will automatically play for runners during specific locations of the MCM course. Runners should download the Motigo app and register for the MCM. Then, invite supporters to record cheer messages.

MCM finisher certificates will be available when results are finalized in mid-November. Accessible through the MCM website, the certificate includes finish time, overall place and gender place. Runners will be able to individualize the certificates by selecting up to four personal achievement badges. The customizable finisher certificates offer multiple category options for badges including first timer, personal record, military spouse and charity runner.

STAT US: MANDATORY Wear the Bib

The B-tag timing device, recording each participant’s official time, is attached to the reverse side of the official MCM bib. Runners must complete the emergency contact information on the reverse side of the bib and secure the bib on a visable area on the front of MCM Day clothing with safety pins provided at Packet Pick-up.

The B-tag records each participant’s splits, start and finish times.

STAT US: REQUIRED Corral by Bib Color

Take note of the color stripe across the bottom of the official bib.

Runners may only access the corrals that matching the color on the bib. These assignments correspond to the anticipated finish time as noted by participants during registration. Runners may always move back in the corrals but may not move forward to a faster corral.

Clearly Bag It

At Packet Pick-up, all runners receive a clear plastic bag to be utilized on event day for bag check. No other bags will be accepted by the UPS trucks. On the back of every bib is a UPS baggage sticker. Runners can peel off the sticker and affix it to the bag. UPS trucks are individually numbered with the assigned truck indicated on each runner’s UPS sticker.

STAT US: ADVISABLE Dress for Success

While weather for the MCM has been unusually hot in recent years, traditionally, runners have been greeted by chilly temperatures upon arrival (40s through the dark morning hours) followed by a steady climb through the 60s. Additional layers are advised for the morning. When ready to run, simply discard the unnecessary clothing along the sides of the road along Route 110. The abandoned apparel will be given to services providers in support of those in need. While some runners may opt to run in costume, masks are prohibited.

STAT US: URGENT When Nature Calls

Runners Village contains 250 port-a-johns for participants. It never seems like enough, though. So if the lines are too long, head up to the start line on Route 110 where another 150 less-frequented port-a-johns also await. Port-a-johns are located at the MCM10K start and at every water point along both courses.

STAT US: CRITICAL Stash the Trash

The MCM is committed to producing an environmentally responsible event. All participants are asked to support this effort by not dropping trash on the course. Any water bottles, cups, gel packs or other items must be discarded at trash receptacles situated at all water points. And at the finish, kindly recycle bottles and put Fyffes banana peels in the yellow composting bins.

Water Great Idea

A self-serve, cup-free water station is located on the 14th Street Bridge. Plan ahead to take advantage of this hydration opportunity and bring a water bottle.

STAT US: RECOMMENDED Family Matters

Devise a plan to reunite with family and friends after the race by informing those key supporters to congregate under the link up towers in the MCM Finish Festival in Rosslyn along Wilson Blvd.

Each tower features letters of the alphabet so choose to meet after finishing at the tower featuring the runner’s last initial.

STAT US: OPTIONAL Assist from Info

MCM Info Tents are located in Runners Village in the Pentagon North parking lot and at the entrance of the Finish Festival on N. Meade Street. All bibs must be obtained prior to MCM day and will not be available at the Info Tents. Runners who participated in the bib mail program can obtain the participant shirt from the Info Tent.

MCM will be active on social media throughout the day. Share event day experiences using the hashtag #RunWithTheMarines.

Movement Plan

Purchase a Metro SmarTrip card before event day. The plastic, rechargeable credit card allows access to Metro and should help facilitate a quicker departure from the Finish Festival by reducing the wait at the Metro station.

process is for the safety of all runners and Marines along the course. Machinery and large vehicles will be following close behind these shuttles to clean and reopen the roadways to vehicles.

All participants and spectators are asked to adhere to guidance provided by law enforcement personnel during MCM Weekend. Runners, spectators, and supporters will be guided through screening points to access start areas on Sunday, Oct. 27.

Limiting the number of items brought to these events will greatly reduce the wait time at these entry points.

All bags, backpacks, purses, etc., will be subject to search by law enforcement personnel at each screening point. MCM, MCM50K, and MCM10K participants will be provided a clear plastic bag during Packet Pick-up at the Health & Fitness Expo. Only these clear plastic bags will be allowed on the UPS baggage trucks parked at the start areas. Runners will not be allowed to wear any other type of backpack or rucksack without prior authorization.

Participants may carry or wear hydration backpacks/vests and/or fuel belts while completing the MCM, MCM50K, or MCM10K events. Wearing a mask, hood, or other device that conceals a substantial portion of the face is strictly prohibited.

Glass containers and flammable liquids are not allowed at any event location.

In addition, all drones will be prohibited.

The Washington Metropolitan area is designated a “no-drone zone” by the Federal Aviation Administration. Drones are also prohibited in all National Park Service locations.

Runners, who are unable to maintain the maximum pace and don’t reach the Gauntlets or Beat the Bridge by the time requirements, must board shuttle buses to be safely driven to the finish area as roadways are reopened for vehicular traffic. It is requested that when asked by a Marine or a law enforcement officer to board the bus, runners not hesitate or protest. This

PAGEANTRY AND PERFORMANCES National Anthem – Clark Beckham

American Idol finalist Clark Beckham will sing the National Anthem at the start of the 44th MCM then join runners in the corrals to participate in his first marathon. After his runner-up performance on the hit TV show in 2015, Beckham’s entire life changed even needing a disguise, on one occasion, to make it through the airport without fanfare.

Beckham is looking forward to honoring the veterans in his family and showing his patriotism during this visit to the nation’s capital. His last trip to the District was to perform at President Barack Obama’s inauguration with his college choir. This time, he will celebrate by singing the National Anthem with the Commandant of the Marine Corps nearby.

“I am looking forward to reflecting on our nation’s heritage and thinking of the men and women who have worked so hard and push themselves for the freedom of this country. I am excited,” shares Beckham.

While touring at the beginning of this year, he realized his physical unhappiness and unhealthy eating habits. He drew inspiration from the audiobook “Can’t Hurt Me” written by ultra runner David Goggins. He pulled over on the side of the road and signed up for the MCM, his very first marathon. He has lost 30 pounds since March. His goal is to finish in four hours or less and sneak in some time to see the monuments.

Meet Clark at the Ask Me Stage in the Expo on Saturday, October 26 at noon and stream his new single ‘I Hurt Too Much.’

MV-22 Osprey

The Bell Boeing MV-22 Osprey is an American multi-mission, tiltrotor military aircraft with both vertical takeoff and landing and short takeoff and landing capabilities. The Osprey combines the functionality of a conventional helicopter with the long-range, high-speed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft. The Osprey will fly “low and slow” over the Marine Corps Marathon, showcasing the

precision of U.S. Marine Corps military aircraft. During the wheeled participant start, the Osprey will fly over the field of runners in helicopter mode before circling back minutes later and crossing the field of runners in airplane mode.

Ceremonies Leidos Leap

Presented by Leidos, eight members of the Patriot Parachute Team will leap from the sky, performing stunning aerial acrobatics. A 400-square foot flag will be suspended between two jumpers, while six others will perform aerial formations.

A Leidos employee will join this team on the descent to the MCM start.

The Patriot Parachute Team was formed by two former U.S. Navy Seals, both part of the elite Navy Leap Frog team. Their mission is to promote patriotism and encourage the next generation of children to do something they may never have thought possible.

M101A1 Howitzer

Weighing approximately 5,000 pounds, the M101A1 105 mm howitzer will fire 75 mm blank rounds signaling the various MCM starts. The howitzer is fired by a team of three Marines; an ammunition technician who transfers a round to the loader. The loader will eject a spent casting before loading a new round, preparing the howitzer to be fired. On command, a section chief pulls the lanyard, firing the weapon.

While the rounds fired at each start line will create a significant smoke screen, traditional rounds are 105 mm, capable of reaching 12,330 yards (11,270 m).

Marine Barracks Washington Ceremonial Platoon

She is mentally prepping to make the leap and counting on the cheers of her family to get her through. She expects the moments before exiting the plane to be most terrifying but is ready to face her fears.

Dressed in full ceremonial Dress Blue uniforms, the four-member team comprising the “Commandants Four” ceremonial color guard will march the U.S. Marine Corps flag and the National Ensign, flanked by two rifle bearers, to the start line of the MCM and MCM50K. Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., also known as “8th & I,” is the oldest active post in the Marine Corps. The post was founded by President Thomas Jefferson and Lt. Col. William Ward Burrows, the second commandant of the Marine Corps, in 1801.

Supporting veterans is something near and dear to her heart as her husband is a Navy veteran and active duty Navy Reservist.

Located on the corners of 8th & I Streets in southeast Washington, D.C., the Barracks supports both ceremonial and security missions in the nation’s capital. The Marine Corps Base Quantico Ceremonial Platoon will provide colors at the MCM10K start.

Representing MCM presenting sponsor, Leidos, is Angela Gutierrez and, interestingly, she is afraid of heights. From Erie, PA, Guitierrez has provided HR support in various capacities for more than nine years at Leidos.

At the Marine Corps Marathon, fellow military and families of fallen service members will line mile 11 with large American flags bearing the names of fallen service members embroidered onto ribbons attached to each flag. Leading up to the flags, posters are displayed with the photograph and name of each fallen military member whose flags are being held. This wear blue mile is a moving tribute to honor and humanize those who gave their lives for this country. The wear blue mile creates a significant opportunity for runners to personally connect with the faces and families of the fallen and to witness first-hand the pride we have in the American Military.

Finish Festival – Marine Corps Base Quantico Rock Band

The Quantico Marine Corps Rock Band is a high energy group that gets the audience up and dancing while performing popular music. With radio hits that span the past five decades, their original arrangements add a new twist to classics that captivate the crowd. R unne r SPECTACULAR SPECTATORS For runners, the Marine Corps Marathon course is a meticulously constructed route with a specific start and finish. Spectators, however, are on individual quests to multiple locations for a coordinated, albeit brief, rendezvous with a special runner. The desire to support a runner on MCM Day is strong, and spectators often face a greater challenge navigating the event than their bib-adorned counterparts. Despite the obstacles of large crowds, throngs of runners, and continuously moving participants, MCM supporters have proven highly successful in their ability to motivate and cheer for loved ones, friends, co-workers and even complete strangers. Here’s the plan.

A General info and medical updates about a specific runner are available at the MCM Info tent in the Finish Festival, located at the corner of Fairfax and Fort Myer Drives.

Q How to best determine what time a runner will be at a particular location?

A Find out the runner’s projected pace per mile to aid in determining where and when they should reach certain points in the course. Remember, it could take a runner as much as 25 minutes to cross the MCM start line, so calculations should not be based on the 7:55 a.m. start time.

The MCM50K should only take a couple minutes to clear the start time so projecting arrival times shouldn’t require any additional calculations beyond the runner’s pace and the 7:30 a.m. start

time. Remember to adjust projected viewing times following the first sighting of your runner knowing that it’s an imperfect science trying to time the convergence of a runner and spectator.

If you suspect you and your runner have missed each other, move to the next viewing location.

A Plan to reunite with runners in the family link up area at the Finish Festival in Rosslyn along Wilson Boulevard. The locations are marked by 13-foot, yellow towers featuring letters of the alphabet.

GETTING TO THE MCM OCTOBER 25-26

To the Health & Fitness Expo/Packet Pick-up. Take Metro to Eisenhower station (yellow) or Van Dorn (blue), then enjoy a free shuttle to National Harbor. Pay parking is also available at the Gaylord National Resort and in nearby National Harbor. Shuttles will run on Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

MCM Kids Run. Take the Metro to the Pentagon station (yellow/blue), then ride the free shuttle to the start line.

Limited parking is available in the South Pentagon Parking lot in lanes 20-26.

This is walking distance to the shuttles.

Pay parking is available at the nearby Fashion Centre at Pentagon City. Families should Metro from the Pentagon City station to the Pentagon station to access the shuttles.

Signage will direct runners to UPS Baggage Drop and the Route 110 start line in Arlington, VA. The Arlington Cemetery Station (blue) will not open until 8:30 a.m. on event morning. This Metro station will serve spectators immediately following the Marathon start and those exiting the event throughout the day.

To the MCM10K. The MCM10K start on the National Mall can be accessed most easily by arriving at the Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter (green/yellow) station. Also, within easy walking distance is the L’Enfant Plaza station (orange/ silver/blue/yellow/green).

The Support

For medical status updates, runner tracking and directions, spectators and runners are encouraged to visit the Info Tent in the Finish Festival. The tent, located on the intersection of Ft. Myer Drive and Fairfax Drive, is marked by a large yellow tower.

Medical support teams will operate of a tent at the Rosslyn Metro plaza, as well as roam the Finish Festival. A medical info tent is also located near the finish line.

The Reunion

Runners and supporters reunite and celebrate in the Family Link-up area on Wilson Blvd between Lynn and North Kent Streets. Yellow towers feature letters of the alphabet – plan to regroup under the tower that features the first letter of the runner’s last name.

26.2 miles away from the start line stands a Marine ready to congratulate runners and present the impressive MCM finisher medal-often regarded as the “Best Marathon Medal in the World.” A class of newly commissioned lieutenants from Marine Corps Base Quantico will present every marathoner with the Eagle, Globe and Anchor translucent medal. The lieutenants will also proudly present the inaugural 50K and patriotic 10K medals.

The Goodies

Finishers are presented the MCM hospitality box containing great snacks including Dole fruit bowls, HomePlate peanut butter, JiMMY Bars and Honey Stinger Organic Waffles to speed up the recovery process. Bottled water from Wegmans, Gatorade and Fyffes bananas are also available to each finisher, but aren’t stuffed into the box. Be sure to grab a Mission Accomplished! light weight recovery jacket to help regulate body temperatures.

Prior to the MCM and 50K starts, runners may drop off ear at the assigned UPS truck in Runners Village hosted by Hyundai. Every runner is assigned a specific UPS truck for baggage drop off as noted on the sticker attached to the back of the bib. The sticker should be peeled off the bib and attached to the bag. After the start, dozens of UPS trucks relocate to Lynn Street in the Finish Festival. Post-event, runners should return to the very same truck for baggage retrieval. You can find MCM10K baggage trucks will be located on Wilson Boulevard.

Finish The Celebration

The Finish Festival in Rosslyn includes the 26.2 beer garden; Hyundai vehicle display; tasty giveaways from Jelly Belly Sport Beans, Wegmans, and the National Watermelon Board and the Cigna Health Improvement Tour. Other great spaces are hosted by Arlington County, Leidos, Famous Daves BBQ, Military OneSource, Stafford County Tourism, TMobile and concessions available from Good Company Doughnuts.

The Getaway

MCM shuttle busses to Crystal City depart from Oak Street. The Rosslyn Metro station is on the blue, orange and silver lines.

Both are easily accessible means to exit from the Finish Festival. Runners returning to the Gaylord National Resort should take Metro to Eisenhower Avenue station, where shuttles will run continuously to the MCM HQ hotel.

Awards Challenge Cup

The Challenge Cup Competition is an event within the MCM pitting members of the U.S. Marine Corps against the British Royal Navy/Marines in this enduring international rivalry. In 1998, the competition was expanded to include women service members from both countries.

Combined times from top finishers on the U.S. and British teams determine the winner of the Challenge Cup Trophy, an 1897 Victorian silver cup that originally belonged to the H.M.S. Victory.

The Challenge Cup, where members of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines travel thousands of miles to compete against the U.S. Marine Corps All-Marine team, celebrates over four decades of the friendly rivalry. In 2018, both male and female divisions were won by the U.S. Marine Corps. The Challenge Cup will be presented during the award ceremony, located at the Awards Stage at 12:15 p.m.

Paul the Penguin Award

Maj. Megan McClung put great stock in the belief that Marines should “leave no man

behind.” In 2006, McClung organized the inaugural MCM Forward in Iraq for deployed service members and civilians allowing them to participate in the MCM. As part of this event, she created the Paul the Penguin award to celebrate the final participant to cross the finish line. Just a few short weeks after the inaugural MCM Forward, McClung was killed in action.

McClung and “The People’s Marathon” held a shared desire to honor the courage and determination of all participants, from first to last. In honor of this shared spirit, the MCM adopted the Paul the Penguin Award in 2007, awarding the stuffed penguin with assistance from McClung’s family to the final MCM finisher at approximately 3 p.m.

Paul Ice Award

In 1995, the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was subject to terrorist attack. Named in honor of Marine LtCol Paul Ice, who was killed during the attack, the Paul Ice award is presented to the first U.S. Marine Corps Reservist to cross the finish line. *This award will be mailed after results are verified.

Top Active Duty U.S. Marine Corps Finisher (M/F) presented by KPMG presented at 12:15.

Age Group awards are presented in five year increments through the 74-79 age group. Only the first place male and female in the 80+ category will recognized. Award winner will be notified in November and invited to receive their award at a special ceremony on Marine Corps Base Quantico in early December. Winners may opt to receive the award by mail if unable to attend the ceremony.

A GREEN MISSION

MCM IS DEDICATED TO MINIMIZING THE ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT HERE’S HOW RUNNERS CAN SUPPORT THE MCM GREEN EFFORTS: COMPOST AND RECYCLE AT FINISH

In 2018, nearly 1,500 pounds of banana and orange peels were collected from runners for composting.

In an effort to reduce utilization of landfills, 10,760 plastic jugs and 2,830 cardboard boxes were recycled. Composting and recycling containers will be placed throughout the Finish Festival in Rosslyn.

DONATE SHOES AND CLOTHING

In 2018, the MCM and its partners collected 7.46 tons of clothing that provided to local Arlington and DC-area shelters. Also during MCM Weekend, attendees at the Health & Fitness Expo are encouraged to retire their high-mileage running shoes by donating them at the event. More than 650 pounds of shoes were collected by AMVETS at last year’s MCM.

BIKE TO THE START

The MCM will again apply for certification as evaluated by the Council for Responsible Sport for social and environmentally responsible practices. Previously, the MCM has earned certifications including Gold in 2015 and Silver in 2011 and 2009.

The MCM was an early signatory to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) “Sports for Climate Action Initiative.”

The “Sports for Climate Action Initiative” invites sport event hosts to declare their

recognition of “the critical need for cities, regions, companies and investors from around the globe to help implement the Paris Climate Agreement and accelerate the transformative change needed to reach greenhouse gas (GHG) emission neutrality in the second half of the twenty-first century.” It offers five principles to guide forward action that leverages the global popularity of sport to help make a real difference in the battle against climate change, as well as help minimize the environmental footprint of sporting events.

A bike valet service will be available in Rosslyn for drop-off prior to the event and retrieval after the finish.

REFILL YOUR WATER BOTTLE

125 gallon dispensers will offer multiple spigots for runners to fill personal water bottles on the 14th Street Bridge. There will also be refill stations located in the Finish Festival in Rosslyn supported by Arlington County. Cups will not be dispensed at these locations.

MCM10K INTEL

FESTIVITIES BEGIN AT 7:45 A.M. WITH THE START AT 7:55 A.M. water station, located on the 14th Street Bridge in the second mile of the course.

Runners may fill personal containers from large dispensers in this location. No cups will be distributed.

Aid Stations

There are two aid stations along the MCM10K course. The first aid station is at the Department of Agriculture at Jefferson Drive SW and 12th Street SW. The second aid station is co-located with the water point at Army-Navy Drive at Eads Street.

Medical tents are also located on the Marine Corps War Memorial Circle and near the Netherlands Carillion.

Transportation

Thousands of runners will queue at the National Mall to complete in the MCM10K on October 27. This 6.2-mile journey starts in front of the National Gallery of Art West Building facing the US Capitol, and continues along portions of the MCM course to the shared finish at the Marine Corps War Memorial.

MCM10K runners will speed past national landmarks, crowds of enthusiastic spectators and multiple musical entertainers.

Pre-Start

MCM10K runners can drop off their belongings at UPS baggage trucks located near the start line on the National Mall.

During Packet Pick-up at the Health & Fitness Expo, runners will receive a clear plastic bag to use for bag drop-off. Peel

off the baggage sticker from the back of the bib and attach to the bag at the assigned UPS truck. After the run, MCM10K participants may pick up their bag at the UPS baggage trucks after they relocate to the MCM Finish Festival in Rosslyn.

Timing

All MCM10K participants must maintain a 16 minute-per-mile pace.

Water Points

The MCM10K course includes two water points serving water courtesy of Walmart and Gatorade. The first location is locating within mile 1 at Jefferson Drive SW and 7th Street SW along the National Mall. The second water point is after the mile 3 marker near Army-Navy Drive at Eads Street. New this year is a self-serve

Metro is the most convenient means to arrive at the start of the MCM10K. The Archives-Navy Memorial/Penn Quarter station is the most convenient. Also, within easy walking distance is the L’Enfant Plaza station. From the finish area, runners and spectators may use either the Rosslyn station, located in the Finish Festival, or Arlington Cemetery.

HEALTHY SCHOOL AWARD

In partnership with longtime sponsor Sodexo, the MCM recognizes the five schools with the largest participation of students in the event and presents the Healthy School Award.

Groups of at least 50 participants run for the chance to earn a student body assembly featuring MCM mascots Miles and Molly along with U.S. Marines from Marine Corps Base Quantico.

Sodexo provides each winning school with a monetary award for the physical education department and nutritional snacks for every student.

The MCM Kids Run presented by Virginia529 hosts 3,600 runners between the ages of 5 and 12 to the Pentagon North parking lot in Arlington, VA on the morning before the MCM. Eight waves of runners will charge onto the one-mile, just-for-fun course beginning at 9:30 a.m., with the final wave crossing under the arch at 11:50 a.m.

Energized by a multitude of mascots and Marines, the young runners enthusiastically await a drop of a flag signaling them to begin the event, encircled by the smart phone paparazzi comprised of proud parents and teachers. The completely enclosed, out-and-back course is surrounded by a team of U.S. Marines ready to high-five eager runners.

Additional challenges, games, giveaways, crafts, and activities populate Camp Miles, the free all-day activity area for families and participants before and after the run.

What Parents Need to Know

Each young runner has an assigned start time. A designated color corresponds to each specific start time. Use this information to guide you when to escort your runner to the starting area.

Parents must tear off the Kid Claim Coupon from the bottom of their child’s bib. The number on the coupon matches the child’s bib number. Only the young participants in the Kids Run are allowed onto the course. Parents will watch and cheer from the perimeter and then enter the reunion area at the finish to reunite with their runner. To exit the reunion area, the parent must show the Marines the Kid Claim Coupon and the Marine will match the Coupon number to the bib number on the child. Before and after the run, families are invited to enjoy the Camp Miles activities.

The 2018 Healthy Schools were Alexandria City’s George Mason Elementary, Mount Vernon Community School and James K Polk Elementary; and Arlington County’s Claremont Immersion and Taylor Elementary.

THE DEBUT OF THE INAUGURAL URBAN ULTRA MCM50K “More and more people are looking for what’s next after they’ve run a marathon, and I think this is it,” shares Wardian.

Standing next to Wardian at the start line will be friend and competitor, Dean Karnazes. He is known for being a New York Times bestselling author, named one of TIME magazine’s “Top 100 Most Influential People in the World,” one of the fittest men on the planet according to Men’s Fitness, and for accruing a wild list of incredible running accomplishments including running 50 marathons in all 50 states in 50 consecutive days.

THIS YEAR WILL BE BIGGER THAN BIG AS THE MCM DEBUTS THE INAUGURAL URBAN ULTRA MCM50K. Participants will begin before the Marathon and run the entire MCM course with the addition of a 4.87-mile diversion at Mile 4.5 along Canal Road in Georgetown. The howitzer will fire at 7:30 a.m. officially sounding the start of the MCM50K. The paved course will remain open until 3:00 p.m. and feature a wide variety of musical entertainment, cheering crowds and an unparalleled sweet spot food station.

Hosted by the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, the Sweet Spot Food Station offers a selection of fresh baked goods certain to amp up the runners for the 50K challenge. The food station is located in Georgetown near Mile 9.

At Mile 22 of the 50K, participants will reach “the Gauntlet” in the nation’s capital.

The inaugural MCM50K sold out in under one hour. Registration for the 2020 event begins on February 23, 2020.

Those who do not make it through the Gauntlet by 12:33 p.m., the same time requirement as the MCM, will be diverted to 14th Street from the certified course at Independence Avenue and may continue running but will not complete the entire 50K course. As is the case with the MCM, these individuals will not be recognized as official finishers. All three events will have a joint finish at the iconic U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial.

Alongside 1,700 ultra participants will be two world renowned runners, Michael Wardian and Dean Karnazes. Wardian is hoping to add the MCM50K top finish to his already impressive resume, which includes finishing over 400 marathons and ultras with dozens of top finishes including three 50K and one 100K title from US Track and Field championships.

Wardian is known for outlandish running feats and being a positive character in the running community, most recently running the entire 90-mile Capital Beltway.

Col. Raymond Celeste, Jr.

SERVED IN THE MARINE CORPS FOR 26 YEARS

When Col. Raymond Celeste, Jr. first ran the Marine Corps Marathon in October of 1991, it was “just an event for local runners.” Now, as he prepares to participate in the MCM for the 28th time, he is reminded of how the event has grown into a national marathon enjoyed by thousands.

“The People’s Marathon, to me, means you don’t have to be a Marine but you have to be disciplined. We are catering to first time runners. We want them to complete a monumental feat. It’s a very meaningful run to anyone who’s patriotic,” says Celeste.

Col. Celeste served in the Marine Corps for 26 years as an artillery officer. It wasn’t until he was stationed in Pendleton that his running career changed forever.

“There was a Marine major who had run some marathons and recommended a marathon in San Diego. He ran my first ever marathon with me and saw my potential,” shares Celeste.

Celeste has completed a total of 59 marathons and even more than his personal participation he is proud of having led others to achieve a marathon goal. The Alexandria, Virginia resident, who assisted in organizing the Capitol Hill Running Club, has helped Hill staffers find fitness and accomplishment for almost two decades.

The Capitol Hill Running Club was founded in 2000 by two U.S. Marines, Brigadier General Tony Corwin and Col. Michael Regner as an “outreach program” to Congress. Now, it boasts an active and alumni membership of over 1,000 runners. “(CHRC) partners with Congress offering the option to train with likeminded individuals who have a common goal in running and finishing the MCM. It also offers a support network. It is a great place for congressional staff to network and make lifelong friendships,” says Celeste.

The Capitol Hill Running Club prepared 72 runners for last year’s MCM. Notable members have included Congressmen Steve Buyer (IN) and Ray LaHood (IL) and Senator Don Nickles (OK).

“What keeps me going is being involved in a running club. Even though I am not as fast as some, I am there as an example to others,” explains Celeste. “We run three times a week. I bring supplies for 40-45 people that are really counting on me.”

At the 44th MCM, Col. Celeste Jr will continue his tradition of wearing bib number 1775, as a nod to his devotion to the Marine Corps by celebrating the year the Marine Corps was established.

Col. Ronald Rook

CHIEF OF STAFF AT THE MARINE CORPS BASE FROM 1999 TO 2001 When Col. Ronald Rook joined the Marine Corps in 1964 at just 17 years old, he thought he would do his four years, collect his college degree and make his exit.

He had no idea he would serve active duty for 37 years.

“I grew up in a poor neighborhood. I was a paper boy from age 11 to 17 and delivered papers to these nice houses. I knew to get to that one day I had to go to college,” says Rook.

Rook started running as a hobby in 1968. Soon after, his brother, also a Marine, encouraged him to run a marathon. Col. Rook ran his very first marathon in 1978 with his brother, Captain Clyde Rook, by his side.

“The first time I ran it I was very nervous. I hadn’t properly hydrated and I cramped fifteen miles in. I also didn’t have the right carbs in me. I was weak by the end,” admits Rook.

Slowly, but surely, Rook trained, prepped and exercised to be able to cross that finish line strong. In 1991, Rook became Chief of Staff at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico making him supervisor of all things related to the Marine Corps Marathon.

“It was an awesome opportunity afforded to me. One I shall never forget,” says Rook.

“I don’t run to add days to my life.

I run to add life to my days; that’s my philosophy.”

During his reign from 1999 to 2001, he addressed first time runners to get them through their first marathon by hosting the Semper Fit Marathon Training Clinic. In his first year of leadership, the MCM hosted 18,000 runners and caught the attention of big names, including gold medal Olympian and former Marine Billy Mills.

Rook has ran 57 marathons and according to Rook, training is just as important as discipline. When he was forced to get a knee replacement in the midst of his running career, he wasn’t sure he would be able to #RunWithTheMarines ever again. Rook recovered from surgery and continued to run. He says the key to being successful post-surgery is completing physical therapy and rehabbing on your own accord.

“What I found out is running is inversely proportional. The more you exercise the less food you require and more productive you are,” says Rook.

As Rook approaches his 73rd birthday, he has fulfilled his dreams and is inspired by the future of the Marine Corps.

“It motivates me seeing the younger Marines throughout the course cheering me on. I tell them there’s hope for you when you’re in your 70s,” laughs Rook.

Less than one week after the 44th Marine Corps Marathon, registration will open for the 2020 Semper Fidelis Challenge. Beginning on November 1, up to 4,000 runners may register for the chance to earn a limited edition Semper Fidelis medal in 2020.

Access to these special entries will conclude when the 4,000 spots are completely sold out or November 11, whichever comes first. Runners will be required to complete both, the Marine Corps Historic Half in May and the Marine Corps Marathon in October, to be eligible for the stunning medal to be presented to qualified individuals at the finish line of the 45th MCM. An official finish time at the Historic Half will maintain eligibility for earning the medal. Runners will be adorned in a specially designed bib displaying their participation in the Semper Fidelis Challenge.

GET PSYCHED There’s a lot going in the minds of runners at the half marathon point of the MCM. While there may be positive thoughts and feelings of confidence in some participants, others may be struggling to overcome individual challenges and doubts. Runners find themselves along Hains Point with the pressure of Beating the Bridge still weighing heavy. In an effort to help runners maintain focus, the MCM will make the brand new Psych Team available to runners. This team of 20 volunteer sport psychologists and sport performance consultants there to offer mental strategies between mile 11.5 and 15.

The Psyching Team goal is to provide commonly-used performance strategies including appropriate goal setting, mental rehearsal, relaxation strategies and mindfulness to assist participants in coping with the mental rigors of a marathon. Psyching Team members are trained in these methods and can tailor a technique to the individual runner. The services provided are free.

Look for the Psyching Team in lime green t-shirts as they support MCM participants by running, walking or speaking with runners during this part of the course, at the water points or in aid stations.

doc LCDR Madsen and his sister, Dahnelle Reynolds, have been training for the MCM for nearly a year. Dahnelle is an avid runner and wanted to take this extra step with her brother to honor their father, U.S. Marine Corps Captain (Ret.) Dr. Charles Henry Madsen Jr. PHD. “Our father defines what a role model should be. We always looked up to him and running in his honor is a privilege,” shares LCDR Madsen.

Dr. Madsen PHD is overjoyed and honored that his children want to run 26.2 miles for him. He plans to meet his two children at the finish line, as he’ll be watching diligently from the VIP Tent. Dr. Madsen PHD’s journey began in in 1951. His commissioning was almost halted when his church asked him to go on a two and a half year mission to Denmark. Then 2ndLt Madsen received a personal letter from the Commandant of the Marine Corps instructing him to serve his church and return to his Marine Corps contract and continue to spread his faith within the Corps. He served valiantly and retired as a Captain, then went on to write multiple medical journals, author books, fight for religious freedoms, speak out for women’s rights, and even stood alongside Martin Luther King Jr. in Florida to stand up for civil rights.

This is the first marathon for LCDR Madsen D.O. “I am running with my family, for my family.” He continues to train each medical professional to be present on event day, and takes their advice when training for his own journey.

“I plan to stop at every aid station during my run to say hello to my friends.” This journey for LCDR Madsen D.O. and his sister is one they plan to ‘run for purpose, not time.’ The two set their sights on something higher than a medal-a connection that binds them together.

“It is a wonderful thing that two of my children want to run for me, I am very proud and humbled,” expresses Dr. Madsen PHD. The Madsen military heritage and urge to help others is a way of life passed down through generations. His ancestors immigrated to the west during the Revolutionary War. Since then, a Madsen man have been in the military, serving the nation they love.

“Preparing to run myself reflects positively into the medical preparation for the masses. It makes me stop and think, ‘What would I want as a runner?’” MCM medical team leadership including Madsen and the Medical Coordinator have spent

MOVING FORWARD to become one himself. He learned innovative ways to work out and his presence showed others that anything is possible.

“My goal is, and has always been, to be a positive example for all veterans.”

Jones not only runs, but thrives. Jones is a part of the US Rowing national team and won the trunk and arms mixed double sculls trial race, won the Final Paralympic Qualification Regatta in Belgrade to qualify for the Paralympics, brought home a bronze medal at the 2012 Paralympics, and placed 4th in the 2013 World Rowing Championships.

Always pushing for greatness, Jones embarked on a solo bike ride across America in 2013. During his journey, he completed 5,180 miles over 181 days and raised a significant amount of money in the process for multiple veteran’s charities, including Semper Fi Fund. Then in 2017, Jones took on the incredible challenge to run 31 marathons in 31 days in 31 different cities. He traveled all over the world and raised even more funds to complete this goal.

Running with the Marines is something Jones takes pride in, as he feels connected to his fellow Marines. Jones grew up in the small town of Lovettsville, Virginia, and joined the Marine Corps in 2006 during his time at Virginia Tech. “There is always a new way to move forward.” Jones inspires others with his actions, and will continue to do so on the MCM50K course. The MCM was his first marathon and now the MCM50K will be his first ultra. Jones describes the 50K event as a ‘natural progression.’

“The howitzer, the spectators lined on the streets and cheers from the other racers push me to keep going. I want to show other runners that anything is possible, and that if a double amputee is running then there are no limits.”

Profile BOBBY WITHERS I RUN FOR OUR TROOPS

Captain Bobby Withers joined the United States Army on the historic morning of September 11, 2001. After finishing his academic career at Georgia Military College in 2003, he was commissioned as an Officer.

His first deployment was as a combat advisor in Helmand Province. It was during his second deployment, as a protective security detachment platoon leader, that he suffered major injuries resulting in the amputation of his right leg.

“I went to Walter Reed Medical Center for about six months. My recovery started out really rough. It’s only been in the last few years that I’ve been able to connect with nonprofits,” explains Withers.

His connections paid off. In 2015, national non-profit group ‘Homes For Our Troops’ awarded Withers a mortgage free, wheelchair accessible ‘forever home’ for the veteran and his two daughters in West Orange, Florida.

“The house has 40 major special adaptations for wheelchair accessibility and so now I don’t have to basically worry about injuring my back or my left leg and not being able to function independently,” says Withers. “It has given me both safety and independence and allowed my caregiver to go back to work.”

Withers will be among the thousands of enthusiastic and ambitious runners at the MCM on October 27, 2019.

He started small, running his first 5K right before he received his HFOT home in 2015. After completing two more half marathons and roughly 20 other races, he feels ready to conquer his very first marathon.

“I run to show my gratitude and my appreciation to Homes For Our Troops, for catching me halfway into a downward spiral and allowing me to set my own trajectory with ambitious goals,” says Withers. “I’m running to give the men and women that I have served with motivation to be more active and get out and take their life back. “ He intentionally chose to #RunWithTheMarines because of his deployment experience in Afghanistan. He explains that there were no other Americans until the Marines arrived and totally tipped the scale in terms of war.

“When the Marines showed up, it was a different war and the interservice rivalry died on arrival. They earned every bit of the accolades they received,” shared Withers.
